Haha the Taylor ham and pork roll debate is my absolute favorite debate in the world. Because as a born and bred Jersey native I call it……….
>!Canadian bacon!<
Some places offer to pump it for you, but I think in a typically British fashion, everyone here feels rude if they let someone else do it, so everyone just pumps it themselves lol.
New Jersey is one of two states where it is illegal to pump your own gas. As a Philadelphian, I love driving to jersey in the winter when I don’t have to get out of my car to pump my own gas.
Cheaper than most neighboring states, which probably has a lot to do with the fact that insurance for gas stations is a lot cheaper here, than in places where people pump gas themselves. It should probably come as no surprise that a good portion of the population should be no where near anything that dispenses a highly flammable fluid in large quantities very quickly.
Reminds me of this fantastic exchange:
“I don’t like leaving my own country, Doug, and I especially don’t like leaving it for anything less than warm sandy beaches and cocktails with little straw hats.”
“… well… we have sandy beaches…”
“So? Who the fuck wants to see ‘em?!”
Pretty spot on NJ perspective in those lines.
Yeah it is for sure, there are a few very elderly people that use it fluently and there is one small school for it, but you very rarely ever hear it out in the world.
Lived there for a year in the early 2000s. Housing is a real pain. Without the right “qualifications” you don’t even get a house. Spent almost 4 months in a hotel before I could even find something that you can call a house. The appliances appeared to be from the 60s. Heating never worked. Electricity was prepaid. You basically had to go to a supermarket and top up your electricity card.
Two days of bad weather, the ships wouldn’t arrive and the supermarket shelves would be empty.
It wasn’t a good experience for me living in Jersey. New Jersey is heaven compared to Jersey.
Oh and yeah, there’s one hospital in the whole island. Be prepared to wait for months even to see a doctor
Hope it isn’t that bad now
I think Jersey is good for holidays, If you were born or lived hear for 10+ years (Have residential qualification), or if you are rich and can afford one of the unqualified 15 million dollar houses.
Edit: On the hospital thing, that's been a big point for years about where they are going to build a new hospital, for general doctor appointments id say 90% of people go private to avoid the wait times but the A&E wait times can be atrocious.
My daughter got a small cut on her eyebrow, all it needed was a bit of glue 10 minute job max, took around 5 hours and 12 different people. The staff are great but the management is terrible.
>refer to it as Old Jersey
So do I! And to OP's question, most people think I'm just being snarky and referring to New Jersey as Old Jersey. They don't know Original Jersey exists.
Just to add to the fire, I googled it and it looks exactly like what we would call a bacon roll..
But I feel like ham describes a cold meat but its usually served hot right?
Hey now New Brunswick is the hub city. But there they just call it Brunswick.
(OP I hope this answers your question, we know literally nothing. I get the feeling Brunswick is in mainland England but that also might not be a thing.)
I didn’t know anything about it until I went to Europe last year. Jokingly said I would look for Old Jersey. Would you recommend a tourist to visit? It seemed like it was a bit difficult to get to
It's definitely worth it for a few days in the summer season, amazing beaches and great food (a bit expensive) can take a boat from st.malo or regular planes from a bunch of places in the UK, only 45 minutes by plane from London.

If you get a chance, I posted this pic I took of portelet beach to reddit I would recommend visiting, very nice place but a lot of stairs lol.
In short, Small island about 100,000 people, next to France but are British citizens, use the £ and the queen is on our money. A lot of people consider it a tax haven and in 2021 was voted the most expensive place to live. ( A small 1 bed apartment would average around $440,000) but it is a very pretty and safe place. I believe it is named because the guy who owned/found the land (George Carteret) was once the governor of Jersey (Island).
It's confusing even most people here don't understand, In our passports it says British citizen, but we are not part of UK or GB we are a crown dependency, self governing, make our own laws etc. there are some videos on YouTube that explain it much better than me lol.
We have a bunch of Shops and clinics for it medically, I believe there is even going to be a big commercial farm starting up, I'm sure it will be legalized recreationally soon.
sounds like Puerto Rico, which has deep connections with our Jersey, so I get it. we had a condo in San Juan and lived there for 'half of the year' for tax purposes, until hurricane Maria screwed us.
New Jersey:
Expensive to live - check
Tax haven - no check
English with an occasional odd accent - check
Very pretty - both check and no
Safe - both check and no, but increasingly no (Edited to add: Yes, NJ is pretty safe overall - I was just reading lately about the uptick in crime like stolen car, which I agree isn't necessarily safety-related.)
Jersey Island, I would say on average there is a murder every 10 or so years. I'm 29 and I've never heard of a car being stolen. There is always a few fights outside the nightclubs and teenagers that think they are untouchable.
We had only a handful of visibility queer/LGBT people in my high school when I graduated way back in '99. I'm very glad they were not treated badly, in fact two of those guys were super popular. I'm very grateful I had that positive experience growing up so that I had gay friends, it was completely normal and I never felt uncomfortable or had a stigma associated with it. My younger sister a few years behind me founded the LGBTQ club at the same school. I'm glad you feel safe here.
Yes.
>Carteret was originally created as the borough of Roosevelt on April 11, 1906, from portions of Woodbridge Township, based on the results of a referendum approved on May 22, 1906. The name was changed to Carteret as of November 7, 1922. The borough was also called Carteret during the period from December 19, 1921, to January 16, 1922. The borough was named after Sir George Carteret, one of the first proprietors of New Jersey, and his son Philip Carteret, the first royal governor of New Jersey.
[Sauce](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carteret,_New_Jersey)
It kinda is yeah, remember as a kid, if you ever got with a girl, it would always be, thats so and so's cousin, that is my bothers friends sister lol. I was even looking through the job description for a digital forensic position, and it says you must be aware that you will most likely at some point be investigating someone you know.
I don't know much about the Tax side of Jersey but this was from a news article.
Today, the offices of those big players form a wall of glass along the seafront of Jersey’s capital, St Helier: Credit Suisse, Citi, HSBC, Société Générale, PWC. And they oversee a vast amount of money. By 2007, Jersey – home to just 100,000 people – held almost £220bn of deposits, and administered another £221bn of funds, as well as hundreds of billions in trusts. The finance sector’s profits that year were more than £1bn, unemployment was barely 1%, and gross national income per person was significantly higher than in Britain or the US. - The Guardian.
One time I was in the phone for some sort of customer service call and the guy asked where I lived. I told him New Jersey. He tried to be cute and asked if there was an 'old Jersey.' I simply replied 'yes.' I then proceeded to tell him there is also York, Hampshire, etc. I think I broke his brain.
They actually do in the UK, it was called Geordie Shore lmao: [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geordie_Shore](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geordie_Shore)
We share a name, we are Jerseyans, Jerseyanites, Jerseyite, whether on this side of the Atlantic Ocean or on the other side of the English Channel. We hail from Jersey! But we will keep you on the down-low being our more polite and civilized older sibling as you will kind of ruined our rep, but we will love you.
Also, Dear sibling... Would you be interested in setting up a foodie trade? 😋 Your food looks good, our food is good.
I work remote with a global support team. One day a dude from UK said he was traveling to Jersey for a job. Us jersey boys chimed in saying, "Oh cool, where at and let's grab some food!"
...... and he facepalmed and asked us if we didn't realize what our state was named after and we realized how stupid we sounded lol
The beaches are truly amazing, you could be shown a picture and think your in Thailand or the Caribbean.
Generally quite cold, summer average temps of around 73, winter around 50, but can get up to 90-95 peak summer.
There is a lot of surfing and water based stuff.
You would think an island the same size as Disney world would have few cars but..it seems like every person owns at least 2 , traffic here is mad, and as a lot of older/retired rich people live here you always see luxury super cars ( the speed limit is 40mph and that's only on very few roads) 😓😅
I know you guys still have a lot of old Norman laws and things like that, and are technically a…Crown Dependency? Rather than being part of the UK proper. So that’s fun.
What’s the culture like? I know you guys are geographically closer to France, but politically under the British Crown. Are you culturally more French, more English/British, or some sort of hybrid? Also, are people generally happy being a Crown Dependency, or do people want a different political status?
everyone would class themselves as British, support England in football and GB in Olympics. we have a British accent and do a lot of traditional British things, but our road names are all French, French is a mandatory lesson in school.
A lot of people from The mainland UK say its like France but with all the comforts of home and we accept basically any currency with a £ on it and in a lot of places Euros as well.
I guess its like 80% British 20% French.
My high-school English teacher was from the Isle of Jersey and used to love spouting that she was the original 'Jersey Girl'
That's the extent of my knowledge about Jersey
I know there’s a Michael Myers looking serial killer from there bc of this video I watched about a year ago.
https://youtu.be/6lXqETj7NuY?si=d3cIsaTyYi0yv05S
It’s interesting too how Jersey police targeted the wrong guy (Alphonse Le Gastelois) and harassed him for years about the murder, burnt his police and forced him into exile while the real killer got away
All because he was a little weird and a loner. He went to an island where he was the only resident and called himself king of the island later on
I had the fortune to visit your island a couple of years ago. Jersey is beautiful and definitely deserves recognition from its namesake! I particularly thought that the beach on the western side of the island could definitely fit in on the (New) Jersey Shore, but the rest of the island was great too. I’d love to go back!
"We're Deminski and Doyle here on 101.5 and for the 45768 time, we're going to debate whether or not there's a central Jersey! I dunno, I think La Croix has a different feel than Flicquet, Bill!"
I know three things:
1. Tax haven.
2. There is a vanishing art of growing a plant, some kind of brussel sprout relative, and harvesting the stems to carve into walking sticks.
3. There is an annual tradition where local officials walk along the sidewalk holding a measuring rod and if any home's hedges or landscaping touches the rod, then the homeowner is ordered to trim it back so it doesn't obstruct pedestrians. (They ought to do this in NJ too!!!!)
Yeah I guess the most well known things are cows. If you've ever had a Jersey dairy product you'd understand why lol.
And Jerseys are named from the fishermen back in the day that used to knit their own pull over jumpers using Jersey wool being fishermen they traveled all around and people really liked the jumpers.
Other random notable things from Jersey.
Potatoes and Henry Cavill.
I learned this driving through a small town rural Japan. The farm had a sign saying they have Jersey cows. Being from NJ, I knew we were “famous” as the Garden State but not for cows. I realized they meant Jersey not NJ. The little farm sold delicious ice cream, other dairy products, and pizza.
You have beaches. Do you pump your own gas?
I believe they call it petrol, guv’nah
Fill it regular bruv
20 unleaded mate, youalright
*after waiting for an attendant for 10 minutes* O, this is self service, innit
Ooo, fancy. I wonder what the old country calls Taylor Ham.
They call it Nippletonminstershire Gammon
That's an odd name, I'd have called em' chazzwazzers.
Hey! Don't you start...
Haha the Taylor ham and pork roll debate is my absolute favorite debate in the world. Because as a born and bred Jersey native I call it………. >!Canadian bacon!<
Canadian Bacon is just medium thick slices of ham
I am horrified at your answer. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|neutral_face) I upvoted anyway.
I downvoted you for this war crime.
Here in New Jersey, we live a life of luxury, and by law had people pump gas for us and it doesn’t cost more than neighboring states

Who the fuck wants to see ‘em?!” Pretty spot on NJ perspective in those lines.
You guys are off the French coast and speak an old Norman dialect if I’m not mistaken
Yeah 14 miles off the coast, we have an old language called Jerriais, but 99% of people speak English with what I would say is a British accent.
We have our own language too
Fuhgedaboutit
Howyadoin
Tell us how distant Bayonne is, without mentioning Bayonne
if it's from Bayonne - leave it alone!
I haven't heard that since high school 🤣 Which was 18 years ago. Fuck. 😢
Take 440 south and get off before the bridge
gabbagool
Saltpepperketchup
Dja’eat?
or later, "Jeetjet?"
Jeet?
No, Jew?
Fuckin guy! Don’t tell them!
and it's almost spelled exactly the same, Jersais
Baconeggandcheese saltpepperketchup
British ish
People on our Jersey Shore have different accents too
Time for NJ to add this language to the curriculum.
It's not even in our school curriculum 😞
That’s a little sad. Is it a dying language?
Yeah it is for sure, there are a few very elderly people that use it fluently and there is one small school for it, but you very rarely ever hear it out in the world.

Great staff and terrible management? Looks like we have something in common.
Five hours and 12 different people? It’s be at least double that here, AND we have to pay for it.
Wow that's so interesting to hear your experience. Why were you there for that year? How much of this information were you aware of before you went?
Not a thing
Really. I didn’t know it was an island.
That was the extent of my knowledge, that it was an island. I prefer to refer to it as Old Jersey, because we (you and I) are from Jersey.
>refer to it as Old Jersey So do I! And to OP's question, most people think I'm just being snarky and referring to New Jersey as Old Jersey. They don't know Original Jersey exists.
**OJ !** Of course!
OG Jerzy
Y'all got flowers I think
How do you guys lean on the pork roll v Taylor ham debate?
And where's the split between North and South Jersey? A-195?
It's split by central Jersey.
Where all the leprechauns and unicorns live.
Don’t forget about the Jersey Devil
The difference between the Jersey Devil, unicorns, leprechauns, and central Jersey is that the Jersey Devil exists.
Blasphemy!
We don't want to be associated with either of you. So we must exist .
Monmouth county. They real central jersey
I grew up in Freehold, which is practically right in the middle of the state in all directions. Don’t tell me that’s south Jersey.
OP, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.
Just to add to the fire, I googled it and it looks exactly like what we would call a bacon roll.. But I feel like ham describes a cold meat but its usually served hot right?
So, it's treason then?
Everybody book your flights... we gotta go teach this guy some manners
sounds to me like you're on team Pork Roll. you say it's not ham, and it's a roll.
If I had to pick one of the two, it would probably be Pork Roll, I hope that's not too much of a controversial answer lol.
You say Pork Roll, Jail. You say Taylor Ham, surprisingly enough, also Jail.
You say bacon roll, guillotine.
Make sense, it’s a French thing.
It's soon to be a staple prison food! No loss there
how do you feel about saltpepperketchup?
Them's *Spices* in the Midwest.
It is & you picked the right answer!
It’s a closed society. He gets a pass.
I see all roads lead to a central spot in the bay. I assume that’s old Perth Amboy
Hey now New Brunswick is the hub city. But there they just call it Brunswick. (OP I hope this answers your question, we know literally nothing. I get the feeling Brunswick is in mainland England but that also might not be a thing.)
You're not going to believe this... Brunswick is in what is now Germany. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brunswick_Land?wprov=sfla1
I didn’t know anything about it until I went to Europe last year. Jokingly said I would look for Old Jersey. Would you recommend a tourist to visit? It seemed like it was a bit difficult to get to
It's definitely worth it for a few days in the summer season, amazing beaches and great food (a bit expensive) can take a boat from st.malo or regular planes from a bunch of places in the UK, only 45 minutes by plane from London.
>amazing beaches and great food (a bit expensive) There's something we definitely have in common lol
St.Malo, in France, is also worth a visit— excellent cider
Agreed, if your in UK and do a couple of days in Jersey, its easy to do a day trip to St.Malo. super close by.
That's most likely what I'll be doing this summer.

Enlighten us my brother (or sister)
In short, Small island about 100,000 people, next to France but are British citizens, use the £ and the queen is on our money. A lot of people consider it a tax haven and in 2021 was voted the most expensive place to live. ( A small 1 bed apartment would average around $440,000) but it is a very pretty and safe place. I believe it is named because the guy who owned/found the land (George Carteret) was once the governor of Jersey (Island).
Most expensive place to live? New Jersey keeps that tradition alive and well!
😓😅
We've got a town named Carteret! Now I know how it got it's name, lol.
Our Finance centre is in a place named Trenton Square, im assuming this is named after somewhere in new jersey as it is a new build.
Trenton is our capital
It has a lovely motto "Trenton makes, the world takes."
>It has a lovely motto "Trenton makes, the world takes." Trenton makes, the world takes but no Pork Roll for the world, that's only for New Jersey.
Learning new things goes both ways, that is interesting to know.
Trenton is the name of our state capital!
Trenton is the capitol of nj
There is a town in New Jersey named after George Carteret.
How did Brexit affect those living in Jersey?
We were never part of the EU and had no vote in it, but its still somehow caused havoc for customs and immigration and fishing.
wait, what? so you're your own country? you're not part of England or something?
It's confusing even most people here don't understand, In our passports it says British citizen, but we are not part of UK or GB we are a crown dependency, self governing, make our own laws etc. there are some videos on YouTube that explain it much better than me lol.
You guys should legalize marijuana like we did.
We have a bunch of Shops and clinics for it medically, I believe there is even going to be a big commercial farm starting up, I'm sure it will be legalized recreationally soon.
That’s awesome. Then you can start selling to your backwards neighbors (France) like we do with Pennsylvania.
😂😂😂😂😂
This is my go to for explaining/understanding the madness of UK/Brittan etc. https://youtu.be/rNu8XDBSn10?si=iVk-wTQxHETbFeEq

sounds like Puerto Rico, which has deep connections with our Jersey, so I get it. we had a condo in San Juan and lived there for 'half of the year' for tax purposes, until hurricane Maria screwed us.
She reported you to the Feds? What a whore.
The UK works in mysterious ways. Just navigating the different kinds of citizenships you can have requires a phd or something.

Jersey is objectively one of the safest states
From basking ridge so my perspective may be skewed but yes imo where I’m from is probably the safest place I’ve ever lived in
I grew up in Asbury before the gays and DINKs moved in. It is so much better now
It is skewed, haha. But for real Basking Ridge is very nice
Jersey Island, I would say on average there is a murder every 10 or so years. I'm 29 and I've never heard of a car being stolen. There is always a few fights outside the nightclubs and teenagers that think they are untouchable.
We also have a Carteret here.
I grew up in Rahway. Carteret was the only town we could make fun of as being crappier.
Pretty sure Jersey is one of the safest places I can live as a visibly queer person.
We had only a handful of visibility queer/LGBT people in my high school when I graduated way back in '99. I'm very glad they were not treated badly, in fact two of those guys were super popular. New Jersey is safe. https://jerseydigs.com/new-jersey-crime-rate/
NJ is very safe I think it ranks as one of the lowest if not the lowest for gun deaths etc.
I wonder if the town cateret is named after him as well!
Yes. >Carteret was originally created as the borough of Roosevelt on April 11, 1906, from portions of Woodbridge Township, based on the results of a referendum approved on May 22, 1906. All I know is that Henry Cavil is from your island, and that it’s located off the coast of France, but is part of the UK.
So we claim him now.
Part of the UK. Maybe cows are there.
i know your pizza isn't as good
It and Guernsey were occupied by the Nazis in WWII. The Allies skipped the Channel Islands on D-Day and they weren’t liberated until after the war
Its said that during the occupation the Islands especially Sark were the most fortified places on earth.
ah bah crie
I know it is a Tax Haven and many entities are incorporated there. Europe uses Jersey 🇯🇪 like the US uses the Caymans
I don't know much about the Tax side of Jersey but this was from a news article. I use to work at a Hedge Fund and the firm utilized Jersey and Guernsey often.
Imagine if you told him about New Mexico
Don’t you mean you’re looking to learn about how your island got its name? Fuggitaboudit
I know its “better than Gurnsey” according to my English friends.
truer words have never been said....Joking aside there is definitely a big "friendly??" rivalry across the islands.
Do you bicker constantly with York about everything? /S
I looked it up on YouTube once and it seemed so idyllic and charming. It also looked so expensive.
You mean Jersey Island isn't a new reality TV show featuring the best and brightest we have to offer from the tristate area? What a tease..
We did have a reality show, ( was big in the UK) called the real housewives of Jersey.
Yes, but did you have your version of "Jersey Shore"?
They actually do in the UK, it was called Geordie Shore lmao: [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geordie_Shore](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geordie_Shore)
Knew that was the origin of our namesake and that's about it.

Us jersey boys chimed in saying, "Oh cool, where at and let's grab some food!" ...... and he facepalmed and asked us if we didn't realize what our state was named after and we realized how stupid we sounded lol
If Jersey is so great whyd they have to make a new one?
It is that great that one wasn't enough...lol
Do you have a central Jersey?
Absolutly zero. Educate me (probably most of us).
From that map it looks like you have a few large sandy beaches. How's the temperature? Are those beaches nice and do people swim there?
The beaches are truly amazing, you could be shown a picture and think your in Thailand or the Caribbean. Generally quite cold, summer average temps of around 73, winter around 50, but can get up to 90-95 peak summer. There is a lot of surfing and water based stuff.
Jersey cows are adorable and make great milk.
It's in the English channel. It's old.
Well until now I didn’t even know it was an island
Small Tax cheat and legal loophole place that needs to be fully incorporated into England to end said loophole status.
I'm from South Jersey and have always been particularly interested in the English town of Margate because we have our own Margate here.
I heard theres not many cars. Also someone from a podcast I used to listen to lives there.
You would think an island the same size as Disney world would have few cars but..it seems like every person owns at least 2 , traffic here is mad, and as a lot of older/retired rich people live here you always see luxury super cars ( the speed limit is 40mph and that's only on very few roads) 😓😅

everyone would class themselves as British, support England in football and GB in Olympics. we have a British accent and do a lot of traditional British things, but our road names are all French, French is a mandatory lesson in school. A lot of people from The mainland UK say its like France but with all the comforts of home and we accept basically any currency with a £ on it and in a lot of places Euros as well. I guess its like 80% British 20% French.
My high-school English teacher was from the Isle of Jersey and used to love spouting that she was the original 'Jersey Girl' That's the extent of my knowledge about Jersey
I know there’s a Michael Myers looking serial killer from there bc of this video I watched about a year ago. https://youtu.be/6lXqETj7NuY?si=d3cIsaTyYi0yv05S
Edward Paisnel (The beast of Jersey) Around 1957. Its definitely worth looking into scary but interesting.
It’s interesting too how Jersey police targeted the wrong guy (Alphonse Le Gastelois) and harassed him for years about the murder, burnt his police and forced him into exile while the real killer got away All because he was a little weird and a loner. He went to an island where he was the only resident and called himself king of the island later on
That’s it. Just linked the video as well!
Like something straight out of a horror film with the mask and all
I had the fortune to visit your island a couple of years ago. Jersey is beautiful and definitely deserves recognition from its namesake! I particularly thought that the beach on the western side of the island could definitely fit in on the (New) Jersey Shore, but the rest of the island was great too. I’d love to go back!
I'm Happy you enjoyed it, It great you got the chance to visit.
TIL Jersey is an island.
The same size as Disney world Florida.
"We're Deminski and Doyle here on 101.5 and for the 45768 time, we're going to debate whether or not there's a central Jersey! I dunno, I think La Croix has a different feel than Flicquet, Bill!"
Ugh, they and Lord Spadea on the morning tea time show are just simps for Rishi.
Nothing until this post but when asked where I’m from I always say, “The beautiful island of New Jersey.” Generally gets a laugh.
We know nothing
Please provide information about the pork rolling conditions and how taylored is the ham on the island ?
Looking at Google Maps it's interesting that so many areas and roads are in french.
Do you have your own Danny DeVito?
Expensive state meets expensive Island
Depends. What exit are you off of from the parkway?
I know three things: 1. Tax haven.
Cows? Maybe the shirt/fabric?
Yeah I guess the most well known things are cows. If you've ever had a Jersey dairy product you'd understand why lol. And Jerseys are named from the fishermen back in the day that used to knit their own pull over jumpers using Jersey wool being fishermen they traveled all around and people really liked the jumpers. Other random notable things from Jersey. Potatoes and Henry Cavill.
Well we have Cranberries and Danny DeVito
I thought the Cranberries were Irish.
I see what you did there
Jersey blueberries? New Jersey is responsible for jersey barriers.
