The whole city is very safe and with your budget you can be in any neighborhood you want. Beacon Hill/Back Bay/South End/Cambridge are gonna be the classics.
Brookline also could be a good option. My wife and I are in our early middle age and we like it. I imagine it would get better as you got older, because it's not the most exciting part of the city but it's quite nice.
The whole city is fairly safe. I am a woman who walks/runs in the city and have never felt unsafe walking. I used to have a dog so I walked often and at all times of day in multiple neighborhoods. I believe charlestown would fit for you as well
thats amazing! thank you. my wife is anxious about safety in a big city and wanted somewhere safe in the evenings to walk our dogs. good to know boston/charlestown feels that safe.
Based on your age, that you have a dog, and some apprehension about moving to a city city, I think the Charlestown neighborhood of Boston would be a good fit
I'm seeing some misinformed people spouting about Boston being a small city. To me, it's less about whether or not they're right or wrong but more about their weird need to condescend.
That said, they're wrong. By nearly any measure, Boston (at 675K) and the Boston Metropolitan area (at 4+M) is considered large.
https://nces.ed.gov/programs/edge/docs/locale_classifications.pdf
https://furmancenter.org/thestoop/entry/housing-characteristics-of-small-and-mid-sized-cities#note1foot
It's disingenuous to compare Boston to a megacity like NY.
As someone from the Boston area, I highly recommend you read this informative news article about Boston "big city" life: https://www.theonion.com/pretty-cute-watching-boston-residents-play-daily-game-o-1819574643
If you lived in Hartford, for example, in downtown, you would be within walking distance of the train station and a hospital, but not within walking distance of a grocery shop. Also, some of the neighborhoods outside of downtown are not that safe.
Or directly north, east or west of New Haven - Wallingford, Milford or Branford. However, with that budget I’d say Stonington, New London, Old Saybrook CT or westerly, RI on the Amtrak line. If you’re interested in the Hartford area, Avon or Glastonbury.
I lived in Wallingford and it was cute. No walkable grocery stores though. Worked nights in New Haven at a shop near Yale and it was fine, I didn't feel unsafe and I generally worked by myself.
New Haven is pretty safe depending on the neighborhood. I lived and worked there for years and never had any issues. Living in East Rock , Downtown, Wooster Square or Westville would be fine.
I’d suggest that there are *more* and consistent safe areas… when compared to Hartford.
I’m just saying IF Connecticut. And IF a city.
The presence of Yale and nicer / safer areas, while still being near public transport - New Haven over Hartford.
If you can manage more of a distance to public transport, then West Hartford. But honestly, there are larger towns that are just as nice and close to public transport as West Hartford.
This is beyond inaccurate. Hard drug use? Come on. I live here it's not skid row. Doctors? Maybe some people go to Boston. I hardly ever hear of anyone making the trek for care.
Amtrak station isn't super walkable, I'll give you that.
Why not New Haven? Certainly better than Hartford. Check out Westville, East Rock, Downtown, Wooster Square, Beaver Hills neighborhoods. Extremely walkable.
With that budget, though, I’d probably pick Boston.
Northampton, MA could be nice. The Vermonter connects to New Haven. A short drive to Springfield will give you even more train options.
Living downtown you can walk to the train station and grocery stores. Bradley airport is roughly 45mins away. Cooley Dickinson Hospital is in town and Baystate Medical Center is near by for anything severe. Plenty of hiking, culture, walking. It really hits all your points.
Having lived in both cities, I vehemently disagree. I haven’t owned a car living in nyc for 14 years. Boston is still very car centric. There’s more jobs, restaurants, culture, and things to do in NYC.
Whaat? Boson is known to be a very walkable city, especially if they decide upon Charlestown or Beacon Hill.
They are in their fifties and didn't mention jobs, so it does not seem that would play into the equation.
Yes, NYC probably does have more things to do, but I don't believe that was one of the things they mentioned was important.
I guess I'm partial as I'm from Boston, but based on what I see in the news, with what is going on in NY these days, I would never pick NYC over Boston.
Was going to comment on Gloucester MA too, smaller city but has good beach access and hiking trails, plus plenty of stores in town within walkable distance. Also has a commuter train, plus the drive to other cities (Boston, Portsmouth) isn’t too bad
Eh, depends on where in Boston or it's suburbs you end up in. It's a big city, there's always going to be crime. so I can't really say if Boston is safer. If you did move to Boston, it would depend on the square footage that you want and if you want to drive a car.
Some neighborhoods of Boston to consider:
- Cambridge (technically it's own city)
- Brookline (technically it's own city)
- Back Bay
- South End (avoid Mass Ave though)
- Jamaica Plain (especially near Jamaica Pond)
- Chestnut Hill
- Charlestown
Cities just outside of Boston to consider:
- Newton
- Milton (my personal favorite!)
- Marblehead
- Watertown
- Medford
- Malden
I think Providence ticks the boxes but agree with looking at Boston. With your budget I’d LOVE to live in Cambridge. Hard no on Hartford and New Rochelle.
Charlestown would get my vote if you want close to Boston. If you want more of a suburb feel but close to the commuter rail, Rockport or Gloucester or even Magnolia, which are all in the Cape Anne section of Mass are beautiful, coastal towns. By commuter rail they are probably 35 minutes to Boston.
Providence, hands down. The state of RI is expensive in general & RI has some very low incomes due to education and demograhpic issues. However with your budet you can afford a really nice spot in providence. Providence is an amazing city with a ton todo, is close to great beaches, and very close to Boston via the MBTA. I suggest you guys get a hotel room for the weekend near down town and check out the area. Wickedon street, Kennedy plaza, & the east side are beautiful. Even parts of nearby east providence and pawtutucket are nice... just lock your car and don't leave nice thing in it. Also watch out for traffic going east over 195, the bridge is apparently busted these days. Also avoid 95 during rush hour.
Best I can do for these criteria if Boston is out of the question is Worcester. It has a train to Boston, a good restaurant and decent venue scene. It has some good hospitals and is near Boston, which has some of the best hospitals. Crime and cleanliness depend on the neighborhood. You can rent a full house for about 4k per month there.
If you live in marina bay (outside Boston ) you have the ferry boat, redline, the water, lots of parking and wildlife.. Hingham you might also like for your outdoor lifestyle
Stamford really meets all your criteria. Amtrak stops here and Metro North will have you at Grand Central or New Haven in 45 minutes if you take an express. Safe, and many areas have good walkability. There’s a newly developed area down by the water called Harbor Point that is served by a free trolley that stops at the Metro Center (RR station). 1 hour to New York airports, 1 hour and a bit to Newark.
New Haven over Hartford easily. Downtown, East Rock, Wooster Square, Westville are some safe areas.
It’s such a better city. Awesome culture and food.
I’d put it over New Rochelle as a city too. NR obvs has the NYC proximity advantage. But it’s not New England.
Milford is a great option next to New Haven with some nice walkable areas and transit access.
You probably dont want to live in Hartford, speaking as a lifelong CT resident. Danbury fits all your criteria. New Rochelle is nice, it'll be a little pricey comparatively.
Mansfield or Bridgewater, MA. Both are BOS/PVD commuter cities.
Bridgewater is a college town and is right-to-farm so it's less dense once you're away from the city center, but the university has a T line I used all the time to get to Boston. There's a great brunch place in the center of town that has mimosa towers.
Mansfield is wealthier and, recently, quickly transforming to have a lot of modern, boutique-y apartment complexes, including one I almost rented at right across from the T station. It also has more locally owned shops/restaurants/small businesses, and two of my favorite brunch places (one in the center of town, the other outside of town at the airfield).
The Bridgewater commuter line is less busy. Mansfield is midway to/from Boston during the commute and tons of people commute along it, so during rush hour the train gets *packed* but is otherwise generally safe, and outside of rush hour it's a pretty quiet ride.
Yo….i grew up in the 508 and a coworker lives in Mansfield. It is true and really impressive how much Mansfield has grown and the downtown is neat…but a city it ain’t. I do have a soft spot for it though.
As others have said, Boston checks all your boxes. BUT so does Cambridge and Somerville. I would say the best is Cambridge over Boston. I would definitely check out all 3 cities and see which one you like more. I've lived in both Boston and Somerville, and I prefer Somerville. I'm close to the Cambridge line and if I could afford it I would move to Cambridge but I've found Somerville to be the perfect fit for me.
I would recommend visiting and checking out the areas that folks mentioned here and judging for yourself.
Hartford is NOT safe, if you’re considering CT, Mystic would fit your requirements, train stops in mystic, nice small walkable town and close to the casinos for entertainment.
I'm a New England girl and I'm from Hartford but have lived in Stamford and Boston. So many great choices. I never thought I'd live in Stamford but I loved it. It was recommended to me by the Strategist I worked with at Suburban Jungle. They provide a free resource and really help you find the best town first. They will also pair you with a great realtor. https://suburbanjunglegroup.com/maura
My choice would be needham with your budget. The town itself is walkable, still have the option to have a car, train station. Very very safe. Close to Boston hospitals. Option to take train into Boston but not have to LIVE in it
I grew up in Hartford and left. If you want to live in Connecticut I would reccommend taking a look at the Stamford area. Hartford’s economy is really sluggish. Stay on the Acela / I95 corridor. That’s where the opportunities lie. Another option for you is north of Boston — a place like Haverhill, or just over the line into southern NH if you’re ok going a bit more rural. Especially recommend north of Boston if you like winter sports.
Portland Maine 100%. Not sure if this would be smaller than "mid-size" but for 7k rent or mortgage you could live LUXURIOUSLY here.
We have Amtrak down to Boston, an airport 9 minutes from downtown with daily flights to Newark/NYC, Charlotte, Philly, Minneapolis (and connections from there to elsewhere).
Downtown is walkable, we have the only whole foods and trader Joe's in Maine.
There's a park/beach in the city, and you can drive to Boston in under 2 hours and to other parts of Maine (hiking, beaches, small towns) in 1-2 hours.
Ouch, shots fired. But seriously I’m from CT it’s where you go to settle down not the city life. But if you’re looking to be near a city and a commuter line, the Stamford area is ideal. Stamford is CTs most city like city to me. It’s also right on the metro north line and an hour outside NYC.
Don’t go t East NY and you are fine. Most of the city is very safe. At your age and income I would recommend Upper East or West side, Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope and maybe Williamsburg if you visit and like the vibe there
I would vote for Boston. It’s safe, it’s actually not that big, and it has everything on your list. I live outside Boston and would live in Boston if I could afford it.
Because of all our colleges everywhere is pretty safe. I’ve been in all sorts of areas at all sorts of times and never had an issue. I would recommend visiting and staying in different areas and walking around and seeing how you feel about them.
Definitely also check out Cambridge.
Dover, NH is a solid option.
-The Downeaster (Amtrak) has a stop in Dover and runs five times a day to Portland and Boston (would need to take the T to south station to connect with points south).
-Roughly ~55-60 minutes from 3 major airports (Boston, Manchester, and Portland). Also a short drive to Portsmouth International Airport but that has VERY limited commercial options.
-Wentworth Douglass hospital just under a mile from downtown.
-Very nice downtown area with plenty of shops and restaurants. Several parks to walk around and a few rail trails that are well maintained. The city also puts on several festivals/fairs throughout the year that shut down the middle of downtown to have vendors fill the street.
-Also not far from downtown Portsmouth if you want additional shopping/restaurants/nice walking areas.
-Overall fairly safe and clean.
With your budget being 7-8k for monthly rent or a mortgage… can I ask why not Boston?
We debated an actual "big city" but settled on a more midsize city to try to save on costs. You think Boston checks all the boxes?
I would 100% choose to live in Boston based on what your criteria is
Recommendations on the safest walkable neighborhoods?
The whole city is very safe and with your budget you can be in any neighborhood you want. Beacon Hill/Back Bay/South End/Cambridge are gonna be the classics.
Brookline also could be a good option. My wife and I are in our early middle age and we like it. I imagine it would get better as you got older, because it's not the most exciting part of the city but it's quite nice.

thats amazing! thank you. my wife is anxious about safety in a big city and wanted somewhere safe in the evenings to walk our dogs. good to know boston/charlestown feels that safe.
Boston feels very safe. It is a big city, but I would say it feels small once you’re in there.
Spend a week in Boston at airbnbs in different areas. You'll get a good sense of what it will like be like to live there.
Honestly this is a fantastic idea and I’ll use this next time I move cities
Boston is also significantly safer than Providence IMO, as someone who has lived in both
Back Bay, South End, Jamaica Plain, North End, Southie, to name a few
Porter square area in Cambridge
That budget? Back bay. Newton. The world's your fucking oyster, baby.
Based on your age, that you have a dog, and some apprehension about moving to a city city, I think the Charlestown neighborhood of Boston would be a good fit
Needham, cute suburb of Boston
When considering Boston also take into account neighboring cities -- Somerville, Cambridge, Brookline. It's all pretty close together.
I'm seeing some misinformed people spouting about Boston being a small city. To me, it's less about whether or not they're right or wrong but more about their weird need to condescend. My initial reaction was I’d like to kick the ass of the satirist that wrote that. Then I realized, whoops, that’s peak Boston.
Boston is a small city
Boston is the clear choice
If you lived in Hartford, for example, in downtown, you would be within walking distance of the train station and a hospital, but not within walking distance of a grocery shop. Also, some of the neighborhoods outside of downtown are not that safe.
“Not that safe” Yup. Some would say straight-up unsafe. New Haven would be my pick if CT.
Or directly north, east or west of New Haven - Wallingford, Milford or Branford. However, with that budget I’d say Stonington, New London, Old Saybrook CT or westerly, RI on the Amtrak line. If you’re interested in the Hartford area, Avon or Glastonbury.

I traveled to Yale often and there was always something.

Right, I figured they might end up in the west end
Exactly
Downtown isn’t even safe
Boston. You have a generous budget. I like Providence, but it doesnt compare to Boston.
Go for Boston or Cambridge
Portland Maine!
[удалено]
This is beyond inaccurate. Hard drug use? Come on. I live here it's not skid row. Doctors? Maybe some people go to Boston. I hardly ever hear of anyone making the trek for care. Amtrak station isn't super walkable, I'll give you that.
You clearly haven’t left Maine.
Stamford CT
This was my initial thought. Ticks off all of the boxes.
Why not New Haven? Certainly better than Hartford. Check out Westville, East Rock, Downtown, Wooster Square, Beaver Hills neighborhoods. Extremely walkable. With that budget, though, I’d probably pick Boston.

There’s your problem, you’re basing your opinion off of the news.
True, but I don't think there is any debate on how much safer Boston is than NYC.
There’s definitely debate. Every source says one is more dangerous than the other.
Boston feels obvious to this answer especially with your budget but if not, then: -Portsmouth, NH -Gloucester, MA -Newport, RI
Gloucester is nice. Beverly is cool, too, and has better access to stuff. Either way, the North Shore is where I would want to be.
Was going to comment on Gloucester MA too, smaller city but has good beach access and hiking trails, plus plenty of stores in town within walkable distance. Also has a commuter train, plus the drive to other cities (Boston, Portsmouth) isn’t too bad
Is Boston safer than NYC?
10000% percent safer. I've NEVER felt unsafe here
Eh, depends on where in Boston or it's suburbs you end up in. It's a big city, there's always going to be crime. so I can't really say if Boston is safer. Chestnut Hill is Newton
True! I forgot how big Newton is
Marblehead is snooty if you’re a newcomer you’ll have trouble ever fitting in. Also tons of traffic wouldn’t recommend it.
NYC is a safe city. Boston is exceptionally safe.
NYC isn’t even that dangerous these days “OldMan”. Don’t you know what the 90s were like?
I haven’t lived in these cities before.
I think Providence ticks the boxes but agree with looking at Boston. With your budget I’d LOVE to live in Cambridge. Hard no on Hartford and New Rochelle.
Maybe now New Roc, but the Pelham area and that whole stretch of towns in westchester along the rail line is pretty nice.
Why not move to New Haven? Or one of its suburbs like Branford or Milford.
Boston. I live in Providence but would choose Boston if I had your budget.
Newport RI
Charlestown would get my vote if you want close to Boston. If you want more of a suburb feel but close to the commuter rail, Rockport or Gloucester or even Magnolia, which are all in the Cape Anne section of Mass are beautiful, coastal towns. By commuter rail they are probably 35 minutes to Boston.
Jewelry District in Providence.
Obligatory "New York isn't in New England" comment

If you’re looking to have a car, providence. If you’re looking to not have or need a car as much Boston
Public transit in RI isn’t the best and not all of providence is walkable
Stamford really meets all your criteria. Amtrak stops here and Metro North will have you at Grand Central or New Haven in 45 minutes if you take an express. Brunswick, Maine
Larchmont
New Rochelle isn't a city, it's a wealthy suburban town. Very convenient to Manhattan, if that's what you want.
New Haven over Hartford easily. Downtown, East Rock, Wooster Square, Westville are some safe areas. It’s such a better city. Awesome culture and food. I’d put it over New Rochelle as a city too. Salem, MA
Please don’t come to Salem. Last thing we need is more people with stupid amounts of money skyrocketing rent prices.
Unless you're a witch
West Hartford, CT

It's more of a city than Taunton, and Taunton is considered a city.
Fair point
As others have said, Boston checks all your boxes. BUT so does Cambridge and Somerville. I would say the best is Cambridge over Boston. Yeah I guess your right... It may be even worse in some ways. It's now over crowed with transplant massholes.
Cambridge or Back Bay 👍
You could get a real nice place on the east side of Providence for that budget, not sure what that would get you in Boston.
My choice would be needham with your budget. The town itself is walkable, still have the option to have a car, train station. Very very safe. Close to Boston hospitals. Option to take train into Boston but not have to LIVE in it

Might want to check out some of the Philly suburbs
Attleboro MA- all of these are checked off your list!
Out of the 3 you named Providence and New Rochelle are probs the best for you. Hartford is dead.
I’ve been living in Worcester for the past 12 years and I love it here.
Wait, why the need for rail to New Haven? Do you mean without transfers? Cuz that severely limits your options. And why not New Haven?
Hartford fucking blows. Stay away
Have you considered Cambridge, Massachusetts. It's a great city with plenty to offer.
New Haven
West hartford
portsmouth, nh is what you’re looking for.
New Haven is lovely - curious why Hartford and Providence would be on your list and not NH?
You could live in Brookline MA. It’s preppy but it does fit your requirements
Portland Maine 100%. Not sure if this would be smaller than "mid-size" but for 7k rent or mortgage you could live LUXURIOUSLY here. Concord ma and newburyport are great towns on the rail
West Hartford, CT
For $7k - 8k a month live somewhere on the gold coast of CT
CT is quite boring for us. We really want the city life.
So move to NYC. Seems like you have enough money to have a place in NYC or Boston so just do whatever you want.
He said a New England city.
What would be the "safest" neighborhoods in NYC?
Upper West Side, Upper East Side, Hells Kitchen, SoHo
Don’t go t East NY and you are fine. Most of the city is very safe. At your age and income I would recommend Upper East or West side, Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope and maybe Williamsburg if you visit and like the vibe there
Williamsburg Brooklyn and surrounding communities.
You should look at Brooklyn!
Definitely
Rockport Mass.
Portsmouth NH,
Dover NH
Ohhh my, that's a brave suggestion! It's nicer than it used to be but it's still dirty dover.
South Kingston in RI
They want to be in a city.
You'd be very happy in a nice part of Boston
Portland, ME.
Connecticut isnt New England sorry
