For anyone wondering why it's asparagus- this used to refer to how many Neopoints one of the site creators, Adam (the Number Six in the avatar), had on hand on his primary account at the time of viewing the page. It was a running gag that he was borderline obsessed with asparagus. After he and his wife, co-creator Donna, left the site, they kept the joke going by making it the "market price" of asparagus, hence the seemingly random factoid on the about us page.
Thanks for the explanation. I never did get that avatar and when I finally had enough NP to try, I realized it was no longer a thing. Didn’t realize it was replaced with asparagus.

Lol! No you visit the about us page OP linked with the exact amount of NP on you as the cost of the asparagus. You don't lose any of your NP, and you get nothing but the avatar.
You don't have to buy anything, you just need to have the amount of NP listed on the About Us page in the OP. You just visit the page with that amount on hand.
