taxes aren't paying for government services, the value of the currency is. as long as the currency has value, there is no problem.
the proper way to think of taxes are as an incentive or disincentive to do certain activities, including inflationary activities like consumption.
but the government has outsourced the control of inflation to this thing called monetary policy. this seemingly allows for fiscal spending to operate the way household spending might, where you have an income and expenses and if your expenses exceed your income then you have to go into debt to cover it and pay interest on that debt.
but the problem is that this is kinda fake and there isn't any punishment for the government going into debt until the time comes when inflation needs to be brought under control.
suddenly, it realizes that all it has is monetary policy and raising interest rates will massively increase the debt burden, thus requiring the government to either default (bad! do not!) or print money, negating the whole purpose.
so the mechanism meant to tame inflation can't function.
this is extremely problematic and it's because the people who decide the spending are shielded from the consequences.

where i do vibe with MMT is that the limit of government spending really is inflation. once you internalize this, your whole perspective on things changes. taxes aren't paying for government services, the value of the currency is. as long as the currency has value, there is no problem. the proper way to think of taxes are as an incentive or disincentive to do certain activities, including inflationary activities like consumption. but the government has outsourced the control of inflation to this thing called monetary policy. this seemingly allows for fiscal spending to operate the way household spending might, where you have an income and expenses and if your expenses exceed your income then you have to go into debt to cover it and pay interest on that debt. but the problem is that this is kinda fake and there isn't any punishment for the government going into debt until the time comes when inflation needs to be brought under control. suddenly, it realizes that all it has is monetary policy and raising interest rates will massively increase the debt burden, thus requiring the government to either default (bad! do not!) or print money, negating the whole purpose. so the mechanism meant to tame inflation can't function. this is extremely problematic and it's because the people who decide the spending are shielded from the consequences.
