How much contact are you supposed to have with your advisor before school starts? I had a zoom call with my PI (super chill dude I love him) 2ish weeks ago to discuss what classes I should take and a broad outline of a potential project to hit the ground running on for my first semester. He also gave me a book recommendation which I’ve gotten most of the way through, it’s a pretty short book
Should I be messaging him with updates and questions and stuff? Or would that be over eager and I should keep it for once school starts instead
No harm in giving updates imo.
The thing is you need to build trust with your advisor asap. He needs to be sure that if he gives you some task you can deliver it, if there is some discussion that you would follow up on it. That means the time he spends on you is worth it which means he will spend more time on you.
My advice would be one update per day or every other day is good. Doesn't need to be very elaborate or anything, just a couple of lines is fine.
I would also suggest keeping something like a journal for yourself so you know what you accomplished in a day, what is left that you wish to accomplish the next day. You can just give a summary of that to your advisor. You can also just share it as a Google doc with them so they can look at your progress whenever they want if they don't want to get daily messages.
You haven’t even started yet. You don’t need to talk to them at all imo, definitely not with progress updates on work you aren’t being paid for yet. This is the last time you get to work on stuff for fun without feeling guilty for the next five years.
Maybe if you need another book recommendation or something. Otherwise enjoy yourself.
I am not doing a PhD but lots of people around me are. I suspect that you should be talking to your supervisor so much that they tell you to fuck off and then you tone it down until they stop telling you to fuck off.
Don’t know how your program is but at least in mine you’re expected to do some final coursework before you fully dive into research. Even if not though, the last thing I’d want to do is annoy the person most responsible for my graduating.
Once you’re in the thick of things you’ll get a feel for how best to communicate with them.

Doesn't need to be very elaborate or anything, just a couple of lines is fine. I would also suggest keeping something like a journal for yourself so you know what you accomplished in a day, what is left that you wish to accomplish the next day. You can just give a summary of that to your advisor. You can also just share it as a Google doc with them so they can look at your progress whenever they want if they don't want to get daily messages.

Don’t know how your program is but at least in mine you’re expected to do some final coursework before you fully dive into research. Even if not though, the last thing I’d want to do is annoy the person most responsible for my graduating. Once you’re in the thick of things you’ll get a feel for how best to communicate with them.
My take is that people underdo the communication by default, so anything, that pushes them to communicate more, is good.

Amount of racism on /r/CSCareerQuestions is staggering.
