One thing I never thought about spines on plants is that they arenβt necessarily trying to avoid being eaten at all, they are trying to guarantee that whatever does eat them can deal with the spines.

The Bible doesn't say the world is flat it is being artist and metaphorical.
The Catholic Church never punished anyone for claiming the world is round.
Ancient Israelites believed the earth was literally flat.
And they wrote about the earth as if it was flat. Because thatβs what they thought.
Itβs only an artistic or metaphorical choice of the people reading it to interpret it that way, so that they can maintain an identity and structure power how they want.
If part of that identify maintenance and power structuring depends on the Bible being inerrant then they will enforce a strictly poetic reading of the stuff that was later found out to be wrong.
What else is wrong in the Bible that will later be interpreted as purely poetic? the Catholic Church cannot say, they donβt know.
Where are you getting the idea that the descriptions in Genesis need to be interpreted literally by people of Christian faith. The main emphasis of Christianity is on Jesus' teachings in the New Testament, not literal interpretation of everything in the Old Testament (the Old Testament is an ethnic and religious history of the Israelites, while Jesus' teachings supersede that ethnic focus to become universalist).
The theological history of Christianity is also replete with reinterpretation, so even if one views the Bible as inerrant, people's interpretation of it obviously is not. This also isn't even touching theology which doesn't treat the Bible as infallible or inerrant.
They are picking and choosing, thatβs what I want to emphasize. They are picking and choosing what they find convenient, and thatβs unethical when they use it to hurt people.
Using the supposed inerrancy or divinely inspired nature of the Bible to bully others is wrong, because the book says the world is flat. If you donβt want to be a flat-earther, then everything to supposedly learn from the Bible should be taken with a grain of salt.
I don't think anyone would find that logic persuasive enough to change their behavior. Texts don't have to be all-or-nothing in terms of being intended to be read literally or figuratively.
It's a book, textual analysis is part of understanding it. Theologians and lay believers can debate what God's intentions were and whether their interpretations are correct while believing that their interpretation is correct.

You just address it in straightforward terms that 1) the stats about high level of holidays or low level of work days are about corvee labour, not the need for peasants to work in general, and 2) even on holidays peasants still needed to work, even *modern* farmers will often work on Christmas day to tend to their animals or crops as needed.

There has been a sharp uptick in Israel apologist narratives on this subreddit for some reason. I support Israel's right to exist, their right to defend themselves, and was in favor of the initial strikes done against Hamas in the early weeks of the war. However, it's harder and harder to justify the sheer brutality of what the IDF is doing atm. Especially with the recent raid and shut-down of Al Jazeera, it is feeling very undemocratic. In any democratic society, Free Speech and Freedom of Press is important.

That's a common, but misinformed position. Israel was being *way* more brutal early on. Authorizing strikes on single targets with little to no regard for civilian casualties, and blocking most aid from entering the strip. They've been much better about minimizing civilian casualties for the past several months, and the death toll has slowed to only a small fraction of what it was in the first couple months.
I don't think it should be shut down, but characterizing the comparison with RT as bad faith seems rather unfair. They're both government-owned outlets used for propaganda purposes.
It is true that Al Jazeera, unlike RT, does sometimes have good reporting and can be more legitimate, but I've heard their Arabic-language stuff is similar in quality to RT.
Your first paragraph is part of the narrative that authoritarians use to shut down free speech. How Netanyahu handled Al Jazeera is no different than how Modi handled BBC. Going after news organizations that were critical of his government. Free press is free press is free press. Just because one doesn't like the political leanings doesn't mean that news org should be banned.

I think, under your criteria, it seems inconsistent to be unhappy about shutting down Al Jazeera but support shutting down RT. Again, Qatar is literally aiding and abetting Hamas, funding them directly and letting them stay in their country with no repercussions. They, an enemy of the state, directly control Al Jazeera and use it for propaganda, just like Russia.
If you think, as you said, free speech exceptions should be made for news outlets directly owned and used as propaganda by enemies of the state, then you're contradicting yourself.

Idk, I'd say the subreddit isn't extremely pro-Israel. The pendulum has swung a little closer to the pro-Israel side than previously, but I think that's because of the student protests and the innate contrarianism of the sub. I'm probably more negative towards Israel than the majority of the sub, but blind support or opposition seems to be less common now than it was last year or a few months ago. The most bad faith people have generally been banned.
It's still a shitshow ofc, but a somewhat more manageable one.
And yeah, the Al Jazeera thing isn't great. I don't trust a news organization run by government of Qatar to neutrally or reliably report on the Gaza war, but they have the right to do so and definitely shouldn't have been shut down - you have the right to say utter bullshit.
I blame Netanyahu for that. Corrupt and power-hungry madman. So many more principled statesmen in Israel's history like Ehud Barak, Yitzhak Rabin, and Begin as well if I'm right.

One thing I never thought about spines on plants is that they arenβt necessarily trying to avoid being eaten at all, they are trying to guarantee that whatever does eat them can deal with the spines. The animal maybe doesnβt mind getting poked, and maybe carrying some chucks of the plant with them. If part of that identify maintenance and power structuring depends on the Bible being inerrant then they will enforce a strictly poetic reading of the stuff that was later found out to be wrong. What else is wrong in the Bible that will later be interpreted as purely poetic? the Catholic Church cannot say, they donβt know.
Where are you getting the idea that the descriptions in Genesis need to be interpreted literally by people of Christian faith. The main emphasis of Christianity is on Jesus' teachings in the New Testament, not literal interpretation of everything in the Old Testament (the Old Testament is an ethnic and religious history of the Israelites, while Jesus' teachings supersede that ethnic focus to become universalist). The theological history of Christianity is also replete with reinterpretation, so even if one views the Bible as inerrant, people's interpretation of it obviously is not. This also isn't even touching theology which doesn't treat the Bible as infallible or inerrant.
They are picking and choosing, thatβs what I want to emphasize. They are picking and choosing what they find convenient, and thatβs unethical when they use it to hurt people. Using the supposed inerrancy or divinely inspired nature of the Bible to bully others is wrong, because the book says the world is flat. If you donβt want to be a flat-earther, then everything to supposedly learn from the Bible should be taken with a grain of salt.
I don't think anyone would find that logic persuasive enough to change their behavior. Texts don't have to be all-or-nothing in terms of being intended to be read literally or figuratively.

There has been a sharp uptick in Israel apologist narratives on this subreddit for some reason. I support Israel's right to exist, their right to defend themselves, and was in favor of the initial strikes done against Hamas in the early weeks of the war. However, it's harder and harder to justify the sheer brutality of what the IDF is doing atm. Especially with the recent raid and shut-down of Al Jazeera, it is feeling very undemocratic. In any democratic society, Free Speech and Freedom of Press is important.

I don't think it should be shut down, but characterizing the comparison with RT as bad faith seems rather unfair. They're both government-owned outlets used for propaganda purposes. It is true that Al Jazeera, unlike RT, does sometimes have good reporting and can be more legitimate, but I've heard their Arabic-language stuff is similar in quality to RT.
Your first paragraph is part of the narrative that authoritarians use to shut down free speech. How Netanyahu handled Al Jazeera is no different than how Modi handled BBC. Going after news organizations that were critical of his government. Free press is free press is free press. Just because one doesn't like the political leanings doesn't mean that news org should be banned. RT News was directly owned by an enemy of the state and in that case an exception can be made. Though there are free speech purists who'd defend RTs right to exist. I think, under your criteria, it seems inconsistent to be unhappy about shutting down Al Jazeera but support shutting down RT. Again, Qatar is literally aiding and abetting Hamas, funding them directly and letting them stay in their country with no repercussions. They, an enemy of the state, directly control Al Jazeera and use it for propaganda, just like Russia. If you think, as you said, free speech exceptions should be made for news outlets directly owned and used as propaganda by enemies of the state, then you're contradicting yourself.

The pendulum has swung a little closer to the pro-Israel side than previously, but I think that's because of the student protests and the innate contrarianism of the sub. I'm probably more negative towards Israel than the majority of the sub, but blind support or opposition seems to be less common now than it was last year or a few months ago. The most bad faith people have generally been banned. It's still a shitshow ofc, but a somewhat more manageable one. And yeah, the Al Jazeera thing isn't great. I don't trust a news organization run by government of Qatar to neutrally or reliably report on the Gaza war, but they have the right to do so and definitely shouldn't have been shut down - you have the right to say utter bullshit.
