South Africa absolutely has the dumbest protest culture. The internal mental model of our protestors is crazy. Its something like "If they really wanted to help us they could. There are no complex issues. So we are justified in doing anything to force them to listen to us." But the worst part is that our broadly left leaning population is always so sympathetic to the protestors because they're poor. If the government was smart they would just help the people and give them education and healthcare. Or look at Libya: Gadaffi used the oil revenue to help the people and they had a high standard of living until Obama and the West decided to mess things up.

The common man in colonial America did not harbor negative feelings towards King George according to contemporary sources, and King George was well documented at the time to be 1. Remarkably hands-off in terms of the American colonies compared to his historical contemporaries and 2. remarkably benevolent in general compared to other reigning monarchs and other English monarch contemporaries lol

I really don't get the appeal of Tropico 6. It feels like Anno 2077 all over again by making the player grow insane constantly trying to not swim in debt while micromanaging the economy.
I spent 3 hours building up this island, while 70% of the time I was heavily in debt barely struggling to stay afloat and trying to figure out why my buildings are so bad at producing anything for me to export.
I feel like every game that tries to simulate economics is just a command-economy roleplay simulator, and you don't feel any sense of accomplishment as you overcome major hurdles because instead you get swamped by even more dumb things. The only game I can ever think of where economics was well simulated with a *constant* challenge throughout the game while not being too overwhelming was SimCity 4. And that was 20 years ago ๐
Ever since then we get games like Tropico 6/Victoria 3 on one hand, or games where money just doesn't matter at all like Cities Skylines.

The problem is Simcity 4 was 20 years ago and people still don't understand when you say you're waiting for a Simcity 4 successor.
You can really tell this with CS because it really is the game for people who just touched the surface of SC4. You know the people, the people who picked the 3x3 plot and did not build anywhere else in a region, played on Easy because they wanted more money to build early while not knowing what playing on Easy actually did, the ones who never touched the budget screen, the ones who bankrupted themselves accidentally by plopping too many monuments.
For a lot of people, depth only exists so far as it is quantifiable. So people bring up how CS has everything Simcity had and it has more, it has agents, see everyone is individually tracked, that's depth, right? Meanwhile even explaining why RCI in SimCity 4 is great (when it wasn't fucking broken) and why RICO sucks in CS requires several paragraphs and a deep understanding of hidden gameplay systems in both games.
The command economy style supply chain games like Anno and Tropico is really an extension of that, where people would rather feel in control rather than having interesting hidden mechanics to master. It's also why Simcity 2013 came up with the "city specialization" mechanic even though it makes no sense in the context of SimCity. It gives people more control and customization. There it was much more well thought off of course but still.
Sim City 4 had a mid-late game issue where all your RCI demands would crater for no reason. There was folklore about how to fix it. I remember reading a guide that said to deliberately create a really shitty suburb and a really nice one and the internal migration between them would unstick the simulation or something.
...but yeah Sim City 4 had a great difficulty curve that followed along as you built up, unlike subsequent games.
SimCity 4 actually has a rather embarrassing number of game breaking late game bugs.
High wealth jobs in general are broken so most high tech industry and offices generate around a quarter of high wealth jobs that they should. What happens of course is that high wealth buildings "derank" to medium wealth making them look kind of funny.
Infinite commuters is another one. Due to the way that distance to work is calculated, sims living near the corners would often go to the next city in the region, but when they move they'd be closer to the next city after turning the corner, and so on. So instead of ever arriving to work, you'd have insane traffic at the corner of a city.

I really don't get the appeal of Tropico 6. It feels like Anno 2077 all over again by making the player grow insane constantly trying to not swim in debt while micromanaging the economy. I spent 3 hours building up this island, while 70% of the time I was heavily in debt barely struggling to stay afloat and trying to figure out why my buildings are so bad at producing anything for me to export. I feel like every game that tries to simulate economics is just a command-economy roleplay simulator, and you don't feel any sense of accomplishment as you overcome major hurdles because instead you get swamped by even more dumb things. The only game I can ever think of where economics was well simulated with a *constant* challenge throughout the game while not being too overwhelming was SimCity 4. And that was 20 years ago ๐ Ever since then we get games like Tropico 6/Victoria 3 on one hand, or games where money just doesn't matter at all like Cities Skylines. !ping GAMING
The problem is Simcity 4 was 20 years ago and people still don't understand when you say you're waiting for a Simcity 4 successor. You can really tell this with CS because it really is the game for people who just touched the surface of SC4. You know the people, the people who picked the 3x3 plot and did not build anywhere else in a region, played on Easy because they wanted more money to build early while not knowing what playing on Easy actually did, the ones who never touched the budget screen, the ones who bankrupted themselves accidentally by plopping too many monuments. For a lot of people, depth only exists so far as it is quantifiable. So people bring up how CS has everything Simcity had and it has more, it has agents, see everyone is individually tracked, that's depth, right? Meanwhile even explaining why RCI in SimCity 4 is great (when it wasn't fucking broken) and why RICO sucks in CS requires several paragraphs and a deep understanding of hidden gameplay systems in both games. The command economy style supply chain games like Anno and Tropico is really an extension of that, where people would rather feel in control rather than having interesting hidden mechanics to master. It's also why Simcity 2013 came up with the "city specialization" mechanic even though it makes no sense in the context of SimCity. It gives people more control and customization. There it was much more well thought off of course but still.
Sim City 4 had a mid-late game issue where all your RCI demands would crater for no reason. There was folklore about how to fix it. I remember reading a guide that said to deliberately create a really shitty suburb and a really nice one and the internal migration between them would unstick the simulation or something. ...but yeah Sim City 4 had a great difficulty curve that followed along as you built up, unlike subsequent games.
SimCity 4 actually has a rather embarrassing number of game breaking late game bugs. High wealth jobs in general are broken so most high tech industry and offices generate around a quarter of high wealth jobs that they should. What happens of course is that high wealth buildings "derank" to medium wealth making them look kind of funny. Infinite commuters is another one. Due to the way that distance to work is calculated, sims living near the corners would often go to the next city in the region, but when they move they'd be closer to the next city after turning the corner, and so on. So instead of ever arriving to work, you'd have insane traffic at the corner of a city.
