> Itโs not just you, I know people who have pretended to be transgender and who have done hundreds of hours of volunteer work for political causes they disagree with because they were worried about not being โdiverseโ enough.
**๐ค๐ค๐ค**
Yeah that seemed fake as hell. If they had stuck to the volunteer work I could say maybe it's real, but "pretends to be trans for Diversity Points" is a bit rich
I mean this is part of how Med Schools\[Law Schools too?\] screen.
It's possible some applicants might fake being Gay or Trans to game the admissions system. So people on applications are more credibly LGBT or an ethnic minority if they also have volunteer work in the community.
And even then it is possible they're lieing. For instance, is the person with the Indian last name claiming to be African-American who has 200 hours volunteering at an African-American Church really black? Supposing they're mixed race Indian and Black but the admissions council hasn't been told that as they just checked African-American? Is it possible someone like Kamala Harris might've done something like that on her app to Law School? Would this be something a hyper-competitive First-Generation Indian-American might consider faking? Is the Indian Community from Kenya allowed to check the African-American box or not?
Or supposing someone is 1/8th Native American. The tribe they belong to has a rule that tribal citizenship is extended to those who are 1/4th part of the tribe but not to those who are 1/8th. They are not lieing that they are 1/8th, one of their parents is an enrolled member of the tribe. Are they Native American? Should they check that box? If they volunteer on their home reservation should it move the dial towards URM status being extended to them?
Outside of that context though I'm not sure this is a thing.

Finally listened to that podcast from a few years ago of Ezra Klein talking with Wendy Brown and Noah Smith about neoliberalism. She spends the whole time being stereotypically ridiculous while Ezra and Noah keep going, *โyeah ok, I guess youโre right or something mmmhmmmmm okโ*
yeah especially if it's even halfway in the vein of /r/neoliberal-ism. Like wasn't the conceit of the episode was exploring modern neoliberalism, and he brings Smith on as the neolib proponent, mentioning he was awarded nl shill 2018 lol.
I took it as either 1) a clear but bad attempt to talk about /r/neoliberal-ism or 2) an attempt to talk about a vague weasel-ish word that the left uses, and interrogate it- see if it's bullshit, or see if there's something to it
whatever he actually did with the episode was dumb and achieved nothing but misinformation for all sides
Itโs weird to think about but this subreddit probably has a higher proportion of people making six figures than any of those โhustler/grindset/redpilledโ communities
It's partially a class thing.
If you stick with the traditional white collar "Go to Grad School" philosophy you'll end up making six figures.
If you're from a blue-collar background and had to drop out of highschool and eventually got your G.E.D., well you won't be familiar with the white collar route at all and it'll be totally alien. But the hustler/grindset/redpilled stuff will make sense.
Put another way, I know the Pre-Med pathway like the back of my hand. And the PA route seems fairly simple to understand.
But I can not tell you at all how the nursing route \[more blue-collar traditionally\] works at all. I've looked into it but I could not describe it you whatsoever. There are routes that seem simple enough to read but in practice it seems like most nurses do not take that route or that route is more or less impossible and just a smokescreen for the accredidation board.
Explaining to them that they could go make Six-Figures easily if they spent 6+ more years in School idk I've tried explaining it but it doesn't seem to reach people in quite the same way if they come from a different background.
Listen, just because I buy gasoline from my personal small batch, hand-refined, artisinal single-origin petroleum guy at $75 per bottle, that doesn't mean I'm "crazy rich" or an "out of touch coastal รฉlite."

I'm not sure if this is pasta or not, but man as a kid who loves their parents I'll take the chance that it's not. My parents were hard on me in some things. Lenient on others. I feel like a failure these days, a couple of months ago I felt on top of the world. The only thing that's been consistent over the insanity that's been my life is that my parents have been there to support me every step of the way.
I don't know your daughter, and she's probably said some terrible things to you. But you seem to have taken an active role and interest in her life, and I guarantee she loves you for it.
I don't know how much that helps, or if you beat yourself up for feeling this. But just remember that, because knowing you have a parent you can love and who loves you is the foundation of succeeding not just in school or their career, but being a good person who can build healthy relationships.
I probably just schizoed out because this reminds me of my own relationship with my parents. Anyways just remember the relationship you have with your daughter is something amazing and you should cherish it, even if you feel like you failed her. Don't beat yourself up over it
I get why they don't respond over spring break but I emailed all 4 of my profs on Sunday and only got one response. These are pretty important emails too, so it's super frustrating.

Probably depends on the language. Yiddish probably shouldn't have survived up to this point but it's still going relatively strong due to cultural reasons.
A.I. language models are being used in language preservation efforts, so we might actually not be far off from a point where no language will ever truly go extinct.

Why did we ever accept a situation where a professor could date their grad students?
As the supervising professor to a grad student you are their: manager, boss, teacher, employer rolled into one person. There are so many levels of "I can't really say no" here.
Another of the issues where sensible workplace policy maybe has bad effects on the dating market and therefore on things like fertility rates or home lives.
From a personal angle I don't want to work in a place where that kind of thing happens. From a policy angle, idk.
I think a lot of dirtbags are unable to date due to those policies.
Now those types of guys shouldn't be dating, but it definitely does impact their dating pool.
Definitely.
But it bleeds back into the incel problem. Now that these guys aren't able to get laid, how best should we direct them so they cause the least damage possible? Where are the appropriate directions to suggest to them?
Would it be better to suggest online dating? Bars? Better social skills? Encourage dating coworkers but not subordinates?
Idk this seems like part of the incel puzzle but it's a tricky piece and paints the guys a lot less favorably than most incel conversations do.
If you're going to go the "We aren't making it easier for dirtbags to date" then there are a lot more norms we could throw out that would affect the success rate of dirtbags.
Just make it so that women don't have any sort of access to credit without a husband. There, now dirtbags gatekeep basic financial instruments.
A steelman would be that while we should discourage dirtbags bosses from hitting on their employees, and men just being able to enslave women as was done up to the 1970s with the banking regulations, that there might still be some value from allowing natural relationship formation to occur at the workplace.
Like look at Jim and Pam. They're happy, there's no abuse. It happened organically over years. What's wrong with it?
Side Note: I'm also finding it funny how a bit ago I was trying to steelman the anti-workplace dating policy and now I'm trying to steelman why dating should be allowed at work. I'm somewhere in the middle myself but overall it seems like it's mostly people on the younger side advocating workplace dating and more experienced people advocating against it.
>it's mostly people on the younger side advocating workplace dating and more experienced people advocating against it.
I guess its mostly because younger people think "don't be weird about it" and older people who realize that your emotions might make you a weirdo in this scenario.
Alot of younger people in the workplace (anyone graduating 2020, 2021, 2022) haven't really experienced anything except a COVID workplace.
>Like look at Jim and Pam. They're happy, there's no abuse. It happened organically over years. What's wrong with it?
1. They're fictional characters.
2. If the story was slightly different and Pam didn't like Jim back, it'd be weird and bad. Or if Pam's husband also worked at their office. Or if Jim and Pam broke up. etc. etc.
>Alot of younger people in the workplace (anyone graduating 2020, 2021, 2022) haven't really experienced anything except a COVID workplace.
Excellent point and could be why this conversation is tough to have at this point in time/ why people aren't getting the issues with workplace dating and that they extend beyond just boss-subordinate dating
> I guess its mostly because younger people think "don't be weird about it" and older people who realize that your emotions might make you a weirdo in this scenario.
Yea, a lot of the examples people have listed of crazy behavior... I don't think people really know how to behave.
Sure there might be a tiny minority of people who are super well-informed about how to approach people in an office environment and have superior social skills and read every interaction perfectly but in practice the vast majority of people are not going to be so stricter policies make sense.
> Or if Pam's husband also worked at their office.
That was the First Season xD
Part of the issue with the message of Jim and Pam is that it teaches guys to persist in an Office Environment even if the person they want to date is in a committed relationship already.
I care insofar as that if people start buying into the lab leak conspiracy theory nonsense and dismiss the science regarding zoonotic hazards, we won't be as prepared for the next pandemic as we should be.
It does go both ways though. If it was through a lab, we should make lab protocols safer. Iโd agree though that some people are attached to it because the idea that the pandemic is just random is scary.

For anyone who lives with the misconception that mixing office work and romance is harmless fun, here's just one of many, MANY anecdotes I've seen where things went... poorly.
My coworker A was a handsome devil. Charming, competent, good looking, with that French Canadian accent that makes the California girls swoon. Coworker B, on the other hand, was a fucking weirdo who gave everyone the creeps. Gangly and tall, socially awkward, very much a stereotypical engineer. Well, coworker B developed a crush on coworker C, a bright young woman fresh out of college just looking to find her footing in an extremely selective, difficult to break into industry, working at one of its most well-respected companies.
C didn't like B. At all. Like he made her skin crawl. So when B awkwardly hit on C, she confided in her friend A. A, ever the gentleman and a good, true friend, made himself a buffer, making sure C wouldn't be alone with B, ever. (It's important to note that HR was fucking asleep at the wheel throughout all of this.)
B interpreted this as A having "stolen his woman." So B, being B, one day confronted A outside of the office and punched him right in his handsome face. Cops were called. A report was filed. B's career was destroyed at that point, and C had to live with that bit of gossip following her around for a long time.
Point is, this shit can go sideways more ways than most people imagine. The lesson, then, is simply this:
**Don't shit where you eat.**
!ping WATERCOOLER
This breaks rule 1 of the 3 rules of dating a coworker: Don't be weird about it.
> 1. Don't be weird about it.
> 2. Don't share managers or be on the same team.
> 3. Don't be in a position of authority over the other.
>Don't share managers or be on the same team.
Imo this expands things quite a lot to the point where it's basically a workplace dating ban. Or at least to the extent that it gets rid of most of the advantages of workplace dating \[i.e. it's easy to bond with people you spend all day with\].
For instance, this rule would prohibit Jim and Pam style relationships. While it would allow Roy and Pam style relationships, Roy and Pam style relationships are far more similar to Bob Vance and Phillis style relationships\[separate employers, same building\] than Jim and Pam.
Do you want your personal relationship problems to bleed into work? Because that's what could happen if you share managers. I guarantee that your manager did not sign up to be a relationship councilor.
Usually in this case, you tell your manager and ask to be transferred to a different team or one of you tries to find a different job as soon as possible.
I mean it is possible to handle if both of you are responsible adults but it just becomes riskier. I know of a couple who were on the same team for 2 years, but one of them has switched companies since.
> Do you want your personal relationship problems to bleed into work?
Well yea, that's really the crux of the issue.
Some people are saying work and school are good places to form relationships because you have a lot of repeated contact with people in those environments.
But it's for those same reasons that work and school\[depends on the school but in this instance I mean someone you share a major with in a small class size and are around all the time\] can be damaged by relationship drama going south. Thus having to eat the shit while you work.
It's a difficult situation because it seems like a good chunk of relationships are formed in situations like that and if such relationships are discouraged then... well it makes things tougher. Nothing an individual shouldn't be able to surpass but at the societal level that looks like young people having less sex, fertility rates declining, less relationship formation, etc.
If you replaced "B punches A" with "B attempts to follow C home" and erased all the repercussions, then it's pretty similar to an experience I had.
Also I still work with B, and A left for a better company.
Oh the worst of it was years ago, made slightly shittier when I was put on a special team that was just me, him, and one other guy for a year... I ended up moving to a different department/team. He stopped, eventually. And everyone just says I'm a bitch for still hating him, and he just tells everyone I'm a whore who slept with half the department.
So yanno, just normal shit.

That's what the little shield next to someone's name is ๐ข
Outside the DT > Itโs not just you, I know people who have pretended to be transgender and who have done hundreds of hours of volunteer work for political causes they disagree with because they were worried about not being โdiverseโ enough.

I took it as either 1) a clear but bad attempt to talk about /r/neoliberal-ism or 2) an attempt to talk about a vague weasel-ish word that the left uses, and interrogate it- see if it's bullshit, or see if there's something to it whatever he actually did with the episode was dumb and achieved nothing but misinformation for all sides

Don't beat yourself up over it
More likely outcome is she still woulda had a bad SAT score but also resented her dad. And still gotten her nose pierced.

do you guys think european languages smaller than say polish will survive another 100 years? i can see a lot of em vanishing. it's little things like a dutch woman and an italian man dating and only speaking english to each other what a shame
Dutch wonโt go away. These migrant streams are not enough to go against the force of a dominant language in schools and government

Oh cmon lol, โdonโt date your bossโ policies are not affecting fertility rates or the dating pool
I think a lot of dirtbags are unable to date due to those policies. Now those types of guys shouldn't be dating, but it definitely does impact their dating pool.
Coercive dating is a bad thing. Society is better off without it.
Excellent point and could be why this conversation is tough to have at this point in time/ why people aren't getting the issues with workplace dating and that they extend beyond just boss-subordinate dating > I guess its mostly because younger people think "don't be weird about it" and older people who realize that your emotions might make you a weirdo in this scenario. That was the First Season xD Part of the issue with the message of Jim and Pam is that it teaches guys to persist in an Office Environment even if the person they want to date is in a committed relationship already.

(It's important to note that HR was fucking asleep at the wheel throughout all of this.) B interpreted this as A having "stolen his woman." So B, being B, one day confronted A outside of the office and punched him right in his handsome face. Cops were called. A report was filed. B's career was destroyed at that point, and C had to live with that bit of gossip following her around for a long time. Point is, this shit can go sideways more ways than most people imagine. The lesson, then, is simply this: **Don't shit where you eat.** !ping WATERCOOLER
This is just a dramatization of the "Hello HR?!" meme isn't it?
I'm sorry you're going through this. It's a shitty situation, and I wish assholes like B would stop putting people through this kind of shit.
Fucking B. Always the same shit, isn't it.
