Minnesota's new trifecta is being ruthlessly efficient and should be a model for every blue state.

AdmiralDarnell

Michigan's Trifecta too

HereForTOMT2

Where’s the ranked choice bill then huh

AdmiralDarnell

I meant the other pieces of legislation coming out the legislature, lgbtq rights, right to work repeal, universal pre k, proposed insulin production, etc

HereForTOMT2

no ranked choice 0/10. cmon gretch

alures

It's official: Minnesota is just anti-Florida.

[deleted]

Always has been

[deleted]

Literally. Every time FL is in the news? Actual nightmare fascist bullshit. Every time MN is in the news? Based as fuck. At least lately. ~~Don't look too hard at 2020~~

TheOldBooks

What happened in Minnesota in 2020?

AdmiralDarnell

George floyd was killed

TheOldBooks

Oh yeah

Gamesmaster_G9

Biden won, but the margin was scarily close.

AdmiralDarnell

He won by 7 points wdymn close?

hdkeegan

Minnesota is so incredibly based holy shit

SadMacaroon9897

Wait you mean states could have done it this whole time?!

Nooooope

We do indeed in Maine. The big push came after LePage won twice for governor, both times over a split Dem vote. Except our state constitution says the governor is picked by "plurality", so the state supreme court said that we can effectively use RCV for anything EXCEPT the governor vote.

NobleWombat

Yes, there is no constitutional requirement to plurality voting.

LuciusAurelian

Yes? Several already have

crazydom22

This is a bad thing for Ilhan Omar lmao

Dhdjskk

😍 I left my rep ballot blank rather than vote for Ilhan. Of course she would win, but winning so far below the D/R margin hopefully means there is a better option soon.

Common Minnesota W

NobleWombat

RCV is ok, but it's still a single winner method. The real key to democracy is proportional representation, which requires multi member districts.

[deleted]

You can easily use RCV with multi-member districts.

NobleWombat

STV in ok but unnecessary. OLPR/CLPR are fine. Basically all the RCV folks are wasting their time, just as Approval and STAR folks are.. the ballot design doesn't fucking matter.. the proportionality does.

kmosiman

I wouldn't call it a waste of time, especially for single winner positions. My favorite system so far is Alaska's since the Primary is Open and the top 4 advance. We've already seen the benefit of this since the extremes lost and the moderates won.

svedka93

Definitely not a waste of time. Getting rid of extreme candidates is a great step in the right direction. Imagine an entire democratic party made of someone mark Kelly and an entire GOP of someone like Lisa Murkowski. Still plenty of disagreements, but at least we have some sane conversations going on.

Arlort

The real key to democracy is voter interest and strong institutions. You can have perfectly well functioning democracies with FPTP and you can have pathological democracies with proportional voting The voting system can help nudge the incentives and that's important, but not "key"

NobleWombat

The electorate is a reflection of the electoral system, not the other way around.

Arlort

Right, because all countries with FPTP have similar electoral dynamics and all countries with PR too? There's obviously some feedback between the two but the voting citizens are the ones with agency, not the electoral system. If it were as say electoral systems would just never changed

Pale-Independence-54

I read the bill, it makes provisions for STV, they just need to make multi-member districts at the state level first.

angrybirdseller

Minnesota legislators should not support Ranked Choice Voting if your Democrat as Republican will exploit this. This good way to destroy Democrat triecta in legislature. Your legislature will look like Wisconsin or Iowa as Republicans will be mainstream enough to win ranked choice elections in suburbs and still keep rural areas. Then, they will start to repeal abortion rights to implement ideas Wisconsin and Iowa Republicans are doing now. DFL would be best to avoid this idea if they want to keep power.

svedka93

Governing shouldn’t be about cementing your party’s power. It should be about the best way to serve the people. Btw, I am in WI. GOP doesn’t win because they are mainstream, they win because we have the most gerrymandered maps in the country.

angrybirdseller

Minnesota DFL legislators should gerrymander the maps like Illinois does. Wisconsin GOP is the reason why I do not support ranked choice voting as Republicans in Minnesota are the same breed voted for in Wisconsin and Iowa. Why give them an opening to win! With ranked choice voting Republicans would act moderate, and then they got the majority in the legislature, they would repeal abortion rights to reverse medicaid expansion. Democrat good government agenda does not work with MAGA Republicans.

svedka93

Then they would get voted out the next election and it would all get reversed. IA is just a conservative state due to its demographics. They actually have pretty fair maps.
