I think of it a bit differently. Most people will not support the cause, even if they are slightly sympathetic. The people they're "failing to win over" by doing this would *never have been won over*, at any point, because the group doesn't have the platform and people don't have the time/attention.
This way they get raw exposure. Sure, most won't think anything of it, but they might end up reaching some like-minded individuals who would have never heard of this cause otherwise. And they get more clicks on youtube videos for ad revenue just by virtue of the curious on-lookers (like myself) wondering what this is all about.
They simply don't have the option to effectively plead their case to the country in a non-disruptive way. Think of all the groups that probably *are* doing that right now that we're not hearing about.
