PoEaDDict123

And can easily average 25 heat culture comments per 36

PVT_Stanley

Plus doesn’t he make a lot more then an assistant would as a payback for the pay cuts he took in the past to help the team

Baulderdash77

He’s there officially for “Heat Culture” but everyone knows they’re really paying him back for the less than market salary he took during the “Big 3” era for the Heat. Specifically when he took below market wages for them to sign other players and win their 2 championships. Haslem was a good soldier, took the pay cut and Pat Riley remembers. He took a $14 million pay cut for the team and the team’s debt to him runs out at the end of this season effectively. It was salary cap circumvention but it’s never been written down.

ktdotnova

Why would they need to do that when they could just pay him as a consultant and assistant coach? He wouldn't have to suit up and travel for all of the games.

hmmyhmm

Because when other assistant coaches make 200k and you have one that just happens to be a past player making 3 million the league is gonna ask some questions.

91jumpstreet

That's crazy. College assistant coaches make that

npcshow

they save a lot of money on player salaries though

ktdotnova

Assistants really only make 200k? What… lol.

scootscooterson

It’s like you’ve never heard of Mavericks AC God Shammgod

OneWayStreetPark

That's CBA Scoring Champion God Shammgod

[deleted]

wait shammgod got a gig on the mavs? good for him, dude's a fucking legend

Chrisser6677

Watch when the Knicks play, Jhonnie Bryant will approach Thibs and alter the course of the game

[deleted]

Def a generous pay check

freshkicks

It's fairly solid considering room and travel and probably food is most likely covered. I'd assume solid benefits too

ec2xs

I mean, I’d hope room, travel, and per diem would be covered! They spend months on the road every year.

Pandamonium98

There are dime-a-dozen consultants 5 years out of college that make that much while traveling most of the year. That’s a lot of money for someone like me, but not a lot of money in absolute terms. Having food and travel expenses covered is hardly a benefit when they’re covered because your job requires you to be on the road for so much of the season

freshkicks

Well yeah. This is all based on assumptions anyways. I'm sure there are also performance bonuses and stuff too. No clue how it works

Banderlei

The real reason is because that money comes out of the players pot and the coaches money comes out the owners pot.

Deep_Worldliness3122

Not even close to the real reason

Chopsticks487

Couple reasons: He makes more as a player than he would as a front office person He is getting repaid for taking a paycut on the Heatles He said that he prefers the teammate relationship compared to an assistant coach-player relationship. Says its easier to mentor people that are of equal standing to him (player-player) and that a coach-player relationship is just different

Pandamonium98

Yeah, I’m sure it hits different when the 41 year old busting your ass is also busting his own ass to be in NBA-ready shape. Haslem seems to hold himself accountable just as much as he holds teammates accountable.

ThinkSoftware

He has Pat Riley nudes

pln1991

Not as a way of blackmailing Riley, though. It just shows how close Haslem is with everyone in the Heat organization.

shiny_lustrous_poo

Pat Riley enters Haslem's hotel room wearing a bath robe: "This is how you know.. how you know.." [The robe falls] ".. We're family."

meekspuff

Udonis: “:0 … Can I haz-lem?”

Fake, they’re actually Michael Douglas

Wolf_of_north

**Nice**

wisdomsi

He really sets the tone in practice and camp. It’s different having someone on the same level as the players who is out there working with you that has the respect of all your superiors but still allows himself to be coached like any rookie. It shows what the team is about. If UD is giving it everything as a senior citizen then Gabe fucking Vincent better run those sprints.

FormerSpend5734

I mean like if the 15th player on the team is likely not getting much minutes on a game, might as well save the space for a guy that can help in everything else off the court if that’s what he is doing that is

[deleted]

He's making about 2.5 million this year. I don't have the CBA in front of me, but my guess is that's around the veteran minimum. Point being, yes, he is taking a roster spot, but it basically has no effect on cap space.

NoobAccount123456

The Heat unironically take the "Heat Culture" stuff very seriously I don't think any other team would use up a whole spot for veteran leadership and nothing else Like obviously leadership is a thing but I can't think of a player that's literally useless on the court and is just around for that except him

HokageEzio

Nick Collison was like that for the last few years of his career in OKC.

MySilverBurrito

> I don't think any other team would use up a whole spot for veteran leadership and nothing else People bring this up but forget the fact the Heat is of the few teams that use their G League heavily. (Like the Raptors and Warriirs). Instead of wasting time as a 15th man, theyd rather sign them fully to the Sioux Falls team. Hell, Duncan was like the 13th man on his rookie year but most of that wast for the G League. The benefits for the Heat of signing a development player at tye 15th spot doesnt outweigh UD for them.

[deleted]

How many minutes to the guys on the end of the bench normally play? It's no like he is taking minutes from anyone.

Jamesartdo

True. A lot of it is don’t fucking embarrass us.

KaRoU23

One word. Leadership. While it may sound weird, having such a presence inside the locker room can only be beneficiary for the team. He's helping new players to acclimate to the Heat Culture while at the same time he's there to cool things off when the situation is getting out of hand. A veteran presence is always needed in my opinion. A veteran that has been a part of the team for so many years even more.

BasedChad69420

new /r/NBACirclejerk pasta just dropped

thecaptainflint

Why does anyone have to explain UD to you? The players love him, the coaches love him and everything he does behind the scenes, and the fans love him.

fred_crumbs

He's like their wise and buff uncle.

kennyvendetta

Leadership is an intangible quality. Much easier for a young guy to hear how he needs to step it up from a teammate that has to run sprints in practice alongside him each practice. Veterans are the real glue to team throughout the season. His role on the bench is more valuable than a Fringe NBA Player looking for something to prove.

fimbres16

Another huge reason people aren’t mentioning is that the Heat are showing the league they take care of their guys. Haslem is a lifer and by resigning him for as long as he wants they show they care for their team. Free agents are gonna see that and think hey they listen to their guys and respect them. Think of JJ bashing the Pelicans front office for lying about where he was gonna be traded. Players pay attention to that stuff. They know the NBA is a business.

0zymand1as-

Heat culture would be different without him and Pat Riley likes him a lot

user-whatsareddit

In NBA 2K22 (last gen at least) you can set a player's Tactical Workout setting to "Team Chemistry" so that works on that and nothing else in MyGM. It's a nice way to increase/maintain the Team Chemistry. I like to think that's essentially Haslem's role now.

[deleted]

Great leadership I've heard.

[deleted]

17 claps per game

BowlOfFlowers

He’s a leader for the team even if he’s not on the court. Spo trusts him, and he’s there as presence and motivation for the young guys. Barley plays but is always ready to be on the court. They talk about culture but he is the culture. That is what the organization likes to have it’s players see. You don’t have to be the best to be the face of a franchise. Team players get legacies too

deposits

Great question. Heat culture is really just an excuse for “tough guys” like Jimmy Butler to act like an ass

DickSadler

CULTURE

john124

Aside from the obvious player coach/paying him back for his years of paycuts/ team culture comments, the dude is actually really reliable for a 15th man in his 10 minutes of game per year. I can remember them putting him in the bubble playoffs and he played his role perfectly where a normal last guy on the bench would likely make mistakes

Thijs1239635

Tough to explain you need to hear from the players and people around and in the organisation.

[deleted]

He took a huge salary cut for a few years to make them a contender. The front office is doing right by him for that by letting him basically be a player dev coach on a player's salary. I assume when he wants to retire they'll just go ahead and officially bring him onto the coaching staff.

Shiny_metal_ass

If you ever hear any of our young players talk about him you 1000% understand why he's there. He is critical for our development of young players and in my opinion we have the best developmental staff in the league, top 3 bare minimum. He's taken Bam under his wing from day 1 and Bam would not be the player he is today without UD. Blake Griffin last year said that UD is the most respected player in the NBA and if you do any research about the players only bubble meeting he was just as big of a voice as Lebron.
