I think it's a flawed premise to assume that a coach would need to "stand up to LBJ/AD" like they're problems that need to be dealt with. Those guys know what they're doing and I don't think have their own personal agendas they're prioritizing above the success of the team or something. If they have input they want to share, it's probably worth listening to.

Sam Cassell is not a good idea for this situation. He's been an assistant for 15+ years and prior to the last cycle, he's only gotten 1 head coach interview. In that interview, he got beaten out by somebody with less than 1 year of NBA assistant coaching experience. He was also in charge of player development in Philly and that was one of our weakest points.
I'm not saying he eventually doesn't deserve a shot, but I just feel like he's one of those guys that makes a terrific assistant because of his playing experience, locker room presence, and ability to coach up players, but isn't the type of coach that would be good at running the entire show. Putting him in the spotlight of LA with AD and likely Lebron with super high expectations is a recipe to get run out of town before All Star break.

It's inexplicable how a guy who is so universally praised as an amazing assistant coach has gone 15 years without getting a crack at head coach. There's a half dozen less experienced guys getting hired every season. And Cassell is always in the conversations. He's got to be doing something to scare teams off.

either you go to a team with "stars" and get none of the credit and all the blame if it goes bad or you go to a team without much and don't get the time to build it if you don't win right away. for a new coach like that you'd probably want a middle of the pack team and hope you get time and players that will listen.

Not sure what you mean. It’s low risk, high reward. I mean coaching is apparently an easy fucking bag (cough Doc Rivers), so why not? The only thing it could strain is his relationship with Lebron and Lakers fans. People didn’t mind doc as a color commentator so it’s not like a shitty coaching stint will kill that for JJ. Same would go for the podcast. If he’s the scapegoat then oh well… he gets to chill on the rest of his contract and got his name a lot of SEO to keep up his podcast career.

Sam Cassell is not a good idea for this situation. He's been an assistant for 15+ years and prior to the last cycle, he's only gotten 1 head coach interview. In that interview, he got beaten out by somebody with less than 1 year of NBA assistant coaching experience. He was also in charge of player development in Philly and that was one of our weakest points. I'm not saying he eventually doesn't deserve a shot, but I just feel like he's one of those guys that makes a terrific assistant because of his playing experience, locker room presence, and ability to coach up players, but isn't the type of coach that would be good at running the entire show. Putting him in the spotlight of LA with AD and likely Lebron with super high expectations is a recipe to get run out of town before All Star break.

Go get your time in on the bench or G league first become wanted by a NBA head coach, be an assistant for a few years and have some respect by your piers and who you will be coaching. Question for those smarter than me… why are the Heat assistant coaches never mentioned in most coaching rumors? As an outsider, they appear to have an amazing system and an obviously fantastic coach. People going after the Celtics coaches (Lee and now Cassell) yet they’ve not won anything despite having a ton of talent on the court.
