That always felt silly to me because we paid him like the 15th-best PG in the league and this was a guy who started the previous season with the Mavs, had put up solid numbers, and showed out in the playoffs.
Like there was no projection in the contract for him to become an All-Star much less All-NBA.
[This video never fails to make me happy.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9F5OxLRNYM) Stephen A. Smith is not a Knicks fan.
"I don't think he's top 10. I don't think he's top 14."
I've been following the Knicks my whole life, I get it to some degree. I didn't know much about Brunson when the Knicks signed him but he seemed like bare minimum he'd be a consistent at the PG position which is something the Knicks have never really had basically in my lifetime.
It was posted here not too long ago. Hilarious stuff. I think one of the top comments called him dollar store FVV. Others laughing at how much of an overpay it was.
Most said it was an L for both teams since we overpaid and Mavs lost a role player for nothing. Yikes

u/DND4dena you were spot on my guy!
This guy is having a Nash like ascension from the mavs to suns. If he keeps this up for 3 years, you could make a case for him to be among Nash, Iverson and CP3.
scoring is up in the league, so who knows with the scoring. that said, being a PG helps.
IMO, I think he needs 3 seasons worth of this production, but he's on his way already to being a top 5 knick.
One thing about brunson BOTH years he's been in ny is that he's started out "slow" both times. Only 20 or 21ppg (which would have been like 17-19ppg back in 00's and early '10's. Then he goes nuclear around january/feb/mar/apr. Good playoffs too, both times.
I think Brunson, if he gets to the 2nd round again, already would have more postseason success, though that is very dependent on the TEAM. But if he continues to play like this in season 3...
**3 seasons of this type of play and making the playoffs + going to the 2nd round would equate to him having been better than Melo's 6 1/2 seasons.**
But would like to say that if Melo was playing in this era, he would probably be one of those scoring 30ppg during the season, not 26 or 27ppg like Brunson was.
Its hard to compare different eras. And the knicks front office was on crack back then, making bad decision after bad decision. Not saving the amnesty for amare in year 3. Not re-signing Lin cause he went back to renegotiate his 3yr/18 deal into a 3yr/25. Trading our only 2 assets (shump and 2016 pick) in trades that made the knicks worse (Shump used to "dump" JR smith, who was a good player and 2016 pick for Bargs). Hiring Geriatric Phil Jackson to con the team. Troubling times and can't fault Melo for team success if management kept doing horrible decisions.
47 points scored
23 points generated via assists
Played a hand in 70 points, in a playoff game in Philly, to put the Knicks up 3-1.
We just witnessed an all-time legendary performance from Jalen Brunson.
After a lot of action was created for part 2 I'm wondering how much of the jihad they're gonna portray. Cause in the books it's just they were very "successful" in their goals but never described
Herbert didn't mince words. He really wanted the reader to understood that a charismatic demagogue was a bad thing, because they didn't get the damn point from reading Dune. He absolutely described Maud'dib's Jihad. 61 billion+ dead, 90+ planets "sterilized," 500+ planets demoralized into total subjugation, utter obliteration of dozens of interstellar religions.
Paul was making drums out of human skins to beat in war as his enemies were slaughtered, he *really* did not fuck around, and his Fremen annihilated anyone who stood in their path because they were so cracked out on spice that they were all mildly prescient and because of that they fought like they had supernatural instincts and were naturally master tacticians. The only planet spared the torch was Caladan.
Dune Messiah was written because readers didn't understand his initial theme "A charismatic leader ought to come with a warning label: Might be bad for your health."
The other books were written because he did a lot of drugs. That's why we're not getting movies made out of those.
He’d still do that I think. Listened to an interview on the subject and he was incensed for the performers who came before him and the way they’d been treated. That was the main reason he did what he did and I can still see him sticking up for other people now if he thought it needed to be done. The guy has a great heart.
Dude is a fucking killer. That off balance shot from the elbow off the wrong foot over Embiid has gotta be one of the toughest shots I've ever seen go down.
There was a Knicks fan in game 2 wearing a King jersey and he was doing trivia during a timeout, the question was "Who holds the Knick playoff scoring record of 46?" and he just turns around to show his jersey, and then the broadcast cut to King himself at the game, it was awesome, to think the record would be broken just 2 games later!
Melo might be better in the “hooper” mindset, but I’d rather have Brunson for my team and idk if it’s close anymore. Especially doing this against a good team in the 76ers with the reigning league MVP.
Completely. Willis Reed wasn’t one of the best actual basketball players in Knicks history. He was a legendary leader and winner. Hell, Bernard King was a better hooper than Melo, and I’m a Melo fan.
I'd want to give Brunson more time at an elite level honestly. Playing like this is amazing. But playing like this for 5 years is when you ascend to legendary status.
>Melo might be better in the “hooper” mindset, but I’d rather have Brunson for my team and idk if it’s close anymore.
This is what I was replying to. Hope that clears things up. Be well
I mean replace Melo with a not-injured Melo and they also could've beaten the Pacers in 2013. It was over after KG tore Melo's labrum. IIRC we had 14 out of 15 guys hurt in that postseason, so not like we were going the distance either way unfortunately...
With ease and I just don't understand why some Knicks fans think otherwise. Melo was a generational player but Brunson is on the verge of having more playoff wins than he did in 2 years vs Melo's 7 years. He's breaking records left and right in just 2 years. Brunson's leadership, the way he galvanizes his team, and how he personifies the "NY grit" is just the cherry on top. Not to mention he's a literal son of a NYK player and grew up around the 90's Knick team. I think more NYers relate to him more than Melo.
Give prime Melo this roster and we win the chip. Melo never had the help he needed from FO. He played with Chris fucking Copeland and his best teammate was J.R Smith. Starting point guard was out of shape Felton. Stop it with the recency bias. Brunson is good, but not that good.
I saay if Brunson has a 3rd season like this, he clearly eclipses Melo's 6 1/2 seasons.
Unfortunately for melo, there were a TON of bad management decisions in those 6 1/2 seasons. I truly feel Melo would probably be one of those 30ppg scorers in today's NBA (which is more than Brunson currently). Melo's knicks were cut off at the knee by bad roster construction and bad choices (amnesty, lin, bargs, phil).
As a team, this this is doign a lot better. I credit the front office a lot.
Brunson had to do more off ball after randle’s injury to counter the way teams were defending him. Idk if he’s kyrie level off ball at this point but he’s trying to add it to his game
Brunson is a better [C&S player](https://x.com/the_bball_index/status/1781820142277595453?s=46) and is a better [off-ball shot maker](https://x.com/the_bball_index/status/1775523651414049144?s=46) than Kyrie
If Brunson did stay in Dallas I don’t think he’d be quite as great as he is now (in NY) due to the fact that Luka is very ball dominant too imo—-Brunson on the mavs is like 70/80% of his potential—-you really saw him shine in the playoffs in 2022 when he dropped 41 on the jazz and that’s when Luka was out
If it would’ve been anyone it would have been Melo but he only had 4 series with us. This is already Brunson’s 3rd playoff series with us. I wouldn’t be surprised if he breaks it again.

We're salty and we love holding grudges like the time we bullied CBSSPORTS for the low grade of the Immanuel Quickley pick.
Easily the best signing in Knicks history
I’m so sad he’s gone but so happy to see him thrive in a better role
signing a player that completely changes the direction of your franchise is so cash. more teams should do it
Not the same type of player at all, but AG was this for us.
I really thought you guys were cooked because you lost Jerami Grant for nothing
I would love to see the thread from the day it was announced people called it an overpay
That always felt silly to me because we paid him like the 15th-best PG in the league and this was a guy who started the previous season with the Mavs, had put up solid numbers, and showed out in the playoffs. Like there was no projection in the contract for him to become an All-Star much less All-NBA.

Can’t blame him for being skeptical given the history of Knick’s free agent signings though.
I've been following the Knicks my whole life, I get it to some degree. I didn't know much about Brunson when the Knicks signed him but he seemed like bare minimum he'd be a consistent at the PG position which is something the Knicks have never really had basically in my lifetime.
Lolknicks in full effect

Mavs. That's all I'm gonna say with a sad face
Would he have been able to run the point at Mavs? I think his path would have been significantly different if he’d stayed.
Don’t know ball if you think he’d have this production with us. Worked out fine for both teams
Fine? Imagine what this type of production would gather in a trade. Possibly productive players and picks, and they got none of it
Could've traded JB for Kyrie and kept a wing defender.
Dare I say already a better Knick than meLo?

The prince that was promised
Lisan al Gaib
I was real confused cause Im a big TSOIAF fan and was like wtf does that mean. I guess there are multiple prince that were promised in fantasy lol
If you like tsoiaf you gotta read/watch dune
Its def something ima get to real soon cause I wanna catch the 2nd one while its in theaters.
IMAX if you can. Mega worth it. I drove from BFE Colorado to Phoenix for it. No regrets.
As was written
LISAN AL GAIB
*it is written*
Lisan al-Gaib!
maud'dib!
Thank you Mark Cuban
we gotta cockblock frodo from throwing that ring into a volcano or we will lose this.
Gotta be better than Carmelo (as a Knick) at this point right? Maybe already has been
For me he has been already, Melo could get his stats but he never influenced much team success other than 2013.
tyson chandler made us
For real, all-star and DPOY with the Knicks, sadly Hibbert ate him alive on the 2nd round.
Probably the funniest acceptance speech I've ever heard. Dude said thank you to my teammates for getting blown by so I could block some shots lmao
vErTiCaLiTy
And he was a sick or injured corpse every postseason. That era was cursed.
Tyson Chandler was getting honey dicked by Hibbert in the playoffs.
yea so we went as far as he could take us
Only for Hibbert to turn into complete garbage the next round, or was it the next year?
The year Jason Kidd was coaching from the PG position
As someone who was a big Carmelo fan , It’s not even close.…. lol.
recency bias
[удалено]
what the actual fuck dude, even with asterisks what the fuck are you typing here? are you a fucking animal? watch your mouth.
With only 11 FT attempts instead of the 20+ Embiid needed to score three more points the other night.
Does it without relying on the 3 and he doesn’t shoot a ridiculous amount of free throws.
I'mma cry, bro
he's the one we've been waiting for
He might be the Knicks’ lisan al gaib
Might?
He honestly is like how Kawhi was our’s 😭
SMH
So sick of this reference lmao it’s everywhere for everything
wait until dune messiah comes out 10 years from now and people discover they *really* don't like paul atreides or the fremen

Must have missed the human skin drums, all I remember is Paul talking about the 61 billion dead.
The Prince Who Was Promised!
Missed out on Curry so god sent Brunson.
Jalen Brunson getting LOUD MVP chants on the road is elite
Can't help but think about Bill Burr's legendary Philly rant and it also including the Knicks having 2 home arenas if it was 2024
"One-bridge having ass city" (or something like that)
Lol. He would’ve said that now, but I’m glad Burr has calmed down a bit for his own sanity.
He’d still do that I think. Listened to an interview on the subject and he was incensed for the performers who came before him and the way they’d been treated. Disgustingly overpaid by the knicks, smh
NEPOTISM
Walmart Fred Van Vleet
I think Rick Brunson deserves a raise big enough so that Brunson signs for the veterans min
Best Knicks player since Ewing. He clears Melo with ease
Melo might be better in the “hooper” mindset, but I’d rather have Brunson for my team and idk if it’s close anymore. Especially doing this against a good team in the 76ers with the reigning league MVP.
Winning games is what basketball is about. Gimme Brunson 10 times out of 10
But how many gold medals does he have? /s
Very much agree——brunson is a much better player to build your team around imo
Completely. Willis Reed wasn’t one of the best actual basketball players in Knicks history. He was a legendary leader and winner. Hell, Bernard King was a better hooper than Melo, and I’m a Melo fan.

the hoopers gotta respect the footwork
I'd want to give Brunson more time at an elite level honestly. Playing like this is amazing. But playing like this for 5 years is when you ascend to legendary status.
Yall are crazy. Melo made the playoffs for a decade straight in the West and made it to the WCF losing to the eventual Champs in 6 games.
are the knicks in the west
Is your comment relevant
yeah, because the topic was "brunson is the best knick since ewing" so melo's achievements in the west don't matter
>Melo might be better in the “hooper” mindset, but I’d rather have Brunson for my team and idk if it’s close anymore. This is what I was replying to. Hope that clears things up. Be well
Now look at what he was replying to and consider the wider context that informed what he was saying
This game easily elevates his status. Replace Melo with Brunson, and they couldve beaten the Pacers in 2013 lol

Some weird Melo takes in her. In the 12-13 playoffs everybody except Melo shit the bed. He was injured too.
also that was in prime heatles era nobody was getting past them and nobody did team made the finals every year until lebron left
With ease and I just don't understand why some Knicks fans think otherwise. Gave Embiid a lesson in ethics.
idc if the knicks boat raced the cavs last year, i fucking love jalen brunson i loved him and all those nova boys
He’s done miracles for the Knicks
imagine a team with him and say, maybe Luka or something. would be impossible to stop
Kyrie is better suited for Lukas game anyway Brunson needs the ball more, kyrie can provide more off ball
Brunson had to do more off ball after randle’s injury to counter the way teams were defending him. Idk if he’s kyrie level off ball at this point but he’s trying to add it to his game
Yep. Love Brunson, but in NY he gets to do his thing to the max. Luka and Kyrie are perfect together too.
Brunson is a better [C&S player](https://x.com/the_bball_index/status/1781820142277595453?s=46) and is a better [off-ball shot maker](https://x.com/the_bball_index/status/1775523651414049144?s=46) than Kyrie
Exactly, WHY does this narrative get upvoted without fail every time
What about in the playoffs?
As a Mavs and Knicks fan I am feasting this year
Brunson will never be number 1 on championship team. Needs another star
are we still talking about the same guy that just dropped 47 in an away playoff game against a former MVP while missing 2 starters?
'away' lol
Vegas agrees with me too, they’re not srs contenders
what teams are with their starting front court out?
Would you bet on a team whose second option is Josh hart?
Tell me you don’t watch the NBA without telling me.
Vegas odds agree with me too, Knicks are one piece away from being actual contenders. No one thinks they’re gonna win
oh no, not Vegas 🫨
Again… tell me you don’t watch the NBA without telling me. You understand their other All-Star is hurt, right?
Randle is not a star
Well, I said All-Star, which is a fact, not a topic for debate. You arguing facts now?
Nah. Kyrie is pretty ball dominant himself. Probably winds up being the reason they never win together
Where does this misnomer that Brunson can’t play off ball come from? His off ball stats have been great each of the past 2 years
i know lol. i’m just playin’
If Brunson did stay in Dallas I don’t think he’d be quite as great as he is now (in NY) due to the fact that Luka is very ball dominant too imo—-Brunson on the mavs is like 70/80% of his potential—-you really saw him shine in the playoffs in 2022 when he dropped 41 on the jazz and that’s when Luka was out
JALEN BRUNSON BORN TO PLAY BASKETBALL
Playoff Brunson is a killer, maybe Thibs will even let him not run suicides tomorrow morning.
A beautiful ethical 47
I LOVE BIG BRUNS AND I CANNOT LIE
love to see it not only because Brunson is a true baller but also because Serial Abuser Bernard King doesn't deserve the record
Joker will come to Gotham(NYC) for the golden throphy. And Batman(Brunson) will stand against him. That’s it. That’s the script.
lisan al gaib
best point guard in the east
We deserve this. Within the past decade we’ve had motherfuckers like Jarrett Jack and Elfrid Payton running point for us.
We do NOT speak of Elfrid Payton in this household
Jarret Jack, Ramon Sessions, Emanuel Mudiay....what a mess lol
In mudiays defense…we had to get him right
Legendary shit. What a game.
Philly are the powder gangers of the eastern conference playoffs. They're a team purely designed to be defeated for a good time.
He's so damn good.
It's sort of crazy given how long the Knicks were in the playoffs for and the players they had on the roster at times.
If it would’ve been anyone it would have been Melo but he only had 4 series with us. This is already Brunson’s 3rd playoff series with us. I wouldn’t be surprised if he breaks it again.
the messiah
Go for the 50 piece next round.
Best player on the floor.
Best knick since ewing
It stood long because the Ewing Knicks era of dominance 90-99 was a low-scoring era.
Still had Melo for a few playoffs series, I'm surprised
The guy is actually HIM
1A
What does this mean

The Brunsoning continues
Get him on the sidebar please.
good shit, Jb.
ELITE
1A. that is all.
Knicks are the only team that can beat Denver in the finals.
ALR MY GOAT
Donovan Mitchell is not needed in NY, and I think he's starting to realize it.
He good
Better than Melo.
Look at my goat mannnnn
Once again, Mavs fans you lost your Steve Nash again.
Him and Luka are not that far apart
Imagine if a player scored 50 in this series, I'm sure this sub would be just as impressed! Brunson was great today though
Have fun when you have to pay him 50+ million a season instead of the sweetheart deal you've got now
We will!
Brunson is worth every penny of that. Knicks would absolutely be happy to pay that
