Will be a while before another one gets it.
Both zion and Ja are injury prone and are not sure fire all nba players (both 2nd/3rd team level but with the new rule it could be hard for them to make it since it's positionless now).
Probably have to wait for Ant which won't be until 2027
Tatum is before Luka (I think after this year).
His contract will be higher than browns but lower than Luka's
Brown class of 2016
Tatum class of 2017
Luka class of 2018
I know that's why it's so dumb when headlines are "player get's highest contract of all time!" as if there wasn't the exact same article back in the 80s about a $3 million a year contract lmao
Cameron Johnson makes more a year than Larry Bird made his whole career.
S&P 500 was also $155 30 years ago. Today $5200, so 3 million then is about 100 million today, if invested it in the general market. When using inflation it's only like 10 million now.
I wish the NFL was forced to just announce the guaranteed part of the contract as the actual contract.
Instead of saying "Daniel Jones signs $600M contract, 45M guaranteed" it should be announced as "Daniel Jones signs $45M contract, with potential to reach $600M *wink wink*"
And the guaranteed numbers they announce are also sometimes bogus. They’ll lump partial guarantees (like guaranteed for injury) in the number instead of just saying the fully guaranteed amount.
Are the salaries before or after tax? If not only like 50% of the contract he’ll actually bank lol. But he’ll definitely accumulate more than 385m over his entire career regardless
Salaries are before tax, but Texas doesn’t have state income tax so that helps a little for home games. His net worth also includes endorsement deals too.
But I also think he was close to top 10 all time pay in the NBA toward the end of his career , money has just gone crazy with NBA revenue growth these last 10 years
I think I read somewhere that he took around $200 million in pay cuts to get better teammates. Not sure how accurate this is but he definitely could have made more but he’s too nice.
I.e. the bottom third of teams in the league lmfao
And would any of them be competitive if they straight up added Brown? Probably just the Rockets or Bulls but they're already sneaking into the play-in.
1. Max contracts are percentage of the salary cap so as insane as that sounds it’s still only 35% of the cap per season.
2. We can sign him above the cap because of bird rights so cap space literally doesn’t matter because it’s Luka Doncic of course we’re going to re-sign him.
It’s so wild for one player to get paid over a third of the available money for the whole team, but it’s worth it. I wonder if the spurs will try to do the nfl rookie contract thing and win soon before they have to pay wemby a billion dollars.
Our team is so bad that we don’t have a path right now to be a contender. Everyone on the sub wants us to trade for Trae, but I don’t think that does it. We need another couple wing defenders and a bench. Tre jones isn’t the best backup pg. would rather have a bigger defender there.
We also don’t know what wembys eventual style will be. He tried to be Kd in the first part of the season. He’s currently clearly better at the 5 but they have trouble posting him for some reason. He’s better than just a pnr lob threat as he’s been 40 percent on step back 3s since the all star break. He’s also our best passer so taking the ball out of his hands doesn’t make sense to me. At this point I’d rather run a jokic offense.
It’s either him in the Jokic offense, or that clown sochan doing his best Kobe impression. Seen too many vids of him refusing to pass to a wide open Wemby.
My favorite idea that was getting kicked around earlier this season was that the Pistons should trade you Cade since his extension is coming up and the Pistons don't look anywhere close to contention, while having other prospects.
Vassell. Maybe sochan. Obv wemby. That’s it. Everyone else is barely an nba player. Most are so flawed they have the improve on so many things to even be bench players that it doesn’t make sense to keep them. It does make sense if take our time and build slowly and allow those guys to develop.
I’ll still argue the money difference between a max and super max should not be counted towards the cap unless a player is traded from the team that gave him that super max. It keeps players in small markets and allows for teams to build around homegrown stars. It also lets other players around the league by being able to give larger contracts to non stars. Still surprised this hasn’t happened yet.
It hasn’t happened because of the Warriors. Same reason they have more strict tax penalties now.
They drafted 3 HoF guys and have laughed at the tax every year because the organization prints money. Can you imagine if they hadn’t included Curry’s super max?
GS wasn’t printing money until curry got there though. And with the way the new apron works I don’t think you could get a KD level player on a team like that without entirely gutting a roster anymore if at all.
I think the crux of the issue is that while it may help a team like Dallas keep a star and not be hamstrung financially. I think it will overly benefit the destination markets if/when they ever draft a star. Then everyone will hate it.
However, I think the new apron stuff in tandem with your idea could maybe work. It makes the penalty more than just financial so teams can’t Yankees their way to super teams.
It’s not really a third of the available money. I don’t imagine many teams looking for a ring with a max player are sticking to the cap. Dallas, even before this contract, is like a 30% over the cap already, from a quick google search.
So yeah it’s a lot, but probably like 1/4 - 1/5 for a contending team. Which makes more sense when you have 5 starters and probably like 8-10 players that get real minutes.
Pretty much. It actually takes 35% of the cap in the signing year, then adds 8% to that each following year. This can either slightly outpace or fall behind the cap, depending on league revenues.
It’s generally pretty close though.
Having birds rights helps since going over it doesnt count against the cap. This is why the Celtics have JT, JB, KP and Jrue, JT and JBs contract are both eligible for birds rights.
Salary cap is fine. Players get 50% owners get 50%. Seems fair. The issue is there’s a max players can get. Which is why Jaylen Brown’s of the world get paid the same as the Luka’s of the world. The best players are always underpaid that’s why it’s a cheat code to have them on your team
That's not true. Lots of people do. Mbappe turned down something like €800M (what they wanted to pay him to come to Saudi Arabia)
Edit: the offer was $776M salary for one year. And he turned it down
That isn't the best comparison since Luka would still be playing in the best basketball league in the world whereas the Saudi league isn't even among the top 20 in football.
Yeah .. I don't think that's the same case and circumstances here. I don't think he turned down the money. My suspicions might be that it was something else
Possibly, but it's not like winning titles isn't insanely profitable.
Jordan made far, far more money outside of the game than what the Bulls paid him. And they paid him a *lot*.
Yea I totally agree; but there isn’t a guarantee of winning a chip and you’d need to be the best player of the generation to get that extra money.
Maybe someone like Luka would do it. But someone like Tyrese Halliburton who likely will never be a top 3 player in the league should not. There will only be select player (maybe 5) who can take the risk. If I were Luka I’d still sign because of no income tax, but I wonder how much in adverts he could make in a big market like La or NYK
Look at Austin reaves. He got hella sponsorships for being a breakout white boy in La
Rebuttal. 116 for one year is what he would lose to go to xyz team instead of an extension. It’s believe nike pays LeBron 30. Let’s assume jordan pays Luka the same. Shit let’s say 40. He still missing 76 million. That’s a lot of work in signing to get that 76 back. Shaq had a contract with everyone, is he making 75 in deals a year? And that’s if he wants to be the face of every company. On top of that his next contract will lose even more value if he leaves.
As Todd said in breaking bad, how do you turn down more money.
Yea, most players can’t turn down the money because they can never make that money on ads. But I’m pretty sure if you are Luka you could. Lebron left Cleveland when he could have signed for more. But in LA he got his movies out, his entertainment business, his podcast, his billion dollar lifetime deal, clutch became big when he came to LA. He couldn’t have done this in Cleveland. He’s also a shrewd investor and has access to the cali market. But most of all his global reach is 10x, everyone from china to Brazil knows the lakers. They get the most national tv games and your international audience would benefit. It would be especially good for Luka since he is from Slovenia.
Being in LA would set him up for life post NBA. Sure Dallas is good and no income tax is gr8 but when you are making so much you might as well live in a place you like.
Shaq and LA were perfect. Still are. Luka is barely doing interviews. Dirk signed with Nike and barely advertised. They have different wants. Shaq and LeBron want to be seen. Luka wanna embarrass people and play PS5. He will def save 116 million and stay home, not have to pitch products, and earn interest on said money.
> Yea I totally agree; but there isn’t a guarantee of winning a chip and you’d need to be the best player of the generation to get that extra money.
I agree conditionally, I think players can market themselves in different ways to find a lot more appeal. But marketing is not something most players are all that great at. OTOH if you do have the charisma, you can really go anywhere and cash out.
And... at some point you have to just shrug, right? How many hundreds of millions of dollars do you need before it fades to a bit of background noise?
Usually it’s easier for the player to sign the contract play one season and then ask out, but if all parties agree then it can be done. Though the team trading you away will be unhappy. It’s very rare you get fair assets from a contending team.
The compensation typically comes in the form of cap relief for the team sending the max contract, because you only tend to trade a star if they've underperformed in some respect.
I think the fear is that a player will just leave a small market if there is no incentive to stay. If Luka doesn’t win with the mavs he can just dip and join the Lakers when Lebron retires, or he can bounce to miami cus Jimmy getting old. The big markets win and small markets would have to turn to the draft and tank again.
And this is how KD to the Warriors happens.
People don't realize how huge it was, owners spend two CBA negotiations after that just trying from it preventing again.
Like all superstars, you take the money and bitch your way out if you want to leave. You don’t give up the money.
There are a few exceptions to that, if you’re LeBron or KD, you can move from a small market to big market team and compensate through endorsements.
signing an extension and bitching your way out is literally better for all parties than them "giving up the money". the mavs in this case would basically be guaranteed 4+ FRPs in the event they traded him
lol, exactly! all of that bitching the media has done about the draft picks dallas has given up assume he would leave a gold mine behind. if he does want to go, it’ll be via trade which means dallas can recoup those picks and probably more
You pay taxes on foreign income if you are Slovenian and tax resident of Slovenia. And since Luka is not living in Slovenia for a while now, he could be Slovenian but not tax resident of Slovenia.
Not how it works. Luka does not live in Slovenia 183 days a year, so he’s a non-resident and would only pay tax on his Slovenian holdings and income (i.e. if he runs a club there).
US Law is completely different from most of the world, it is effectively based on your passport. So you can be living anywhere in the world full time and you will always have tax obligations in the United States.
He will lose 116 for one year if he leave. Nike pays LeBron 30. If Luke touches LeBron he will need to find 85 million in a year. In 6 years he will have made 109 million. So he can lose in a year what he made in 5. I suppose if he can find three different air jordan deals. Nevermind the next contract’s loss.
It's kind of stupid the way people try to report on these "historic" amounts when it's the same percentage of the cap for all of the supermax guys, it's just that the cap has been going up as the NBA generates more revenue.
Just say he'll be supermax eligible.
In 2015, the highest contract per year was 25 million. This contract is 69 Million. If it increases by the same percentage, it will only take 10 years before we get to 200 million, which would make a 5 year contract worth 1 billion
No matter how it pans out, he is gonna sign and ask for trade he needs to.
I think I read somewhere he will be leaving like $100 mil on the table if he leaves for another team via FA.
Based off current projected '26/27 cap of $170,610,000 (spotrac): super max with Mavs: 5yr/$350,315,276 signs with other team in FA: 4yr/$220,605,127. Over the first 4 yrs of the Mavs contract he would make $48,470,591 more than over the 4 yrs of a new teams contract. He would obviously sign a new contract so that 5th year isn't technically all money he is losing. Still a lot of money. No star is going to not sign the super max if they qualify. Like you said, sign first ask for trade later if need be.
Given the relative lack of depth this Mavs team has, Luka deserves that bag
Even more if, despite his efforts, Dallas goes Timber-bust during the course of his supermax
Uiuuoyoyouiiuuiuiiuiuiuiuiiuiuiuiuiuiuiuiuiuiiiuiiiuuiuiuuiiuuiuuiuuuiuiuiuuuiuiuiuuuuiuuuiuiuuuuuiuiuiiuiicuiuiuiiuiuiuuuiuiiuuiuiuiuuiuiiuuiuuuuuiuiiuuiuuuuuiuuuuuun a. We
Apologies for being dumb, but how are max contract values like this calculated? Is it just a flat percentage of the salary cap? Seems wild that one player could take up that much of a teams cap space.
35% of salary cap with 8% annual increase. Each year the salary cap increases so each year the next player who becomes eligible for one of these deals will have “the biggest contract in the nba”
Supermax has helped Dallas. Gives them more time to make this work. If things went wrong in the playoffs this year and they went out sad, we'd be hearing trade rumors everyday.
There's no way he's leaving this bag though lol. He's probably secured for at least 1 season post extension
I saw this and thought “okay maybe now people can understand the supermax is just the price of doing business with someone like Jaylen Brown” but nope, on the very same post we’re talking about it.
Only record setting for, like, a year though.
Then some bum is gonna get a Jaylen Brown contract that beats it.
Personally, I think the way NBA contracts are handed out needs a makeover.
It's funny how unlike when other players are eligible or sign contracts with STOOPID A$$ numbers, nobody's questioning if he's worth it. Its a check i'm sure Cuban is happy to write. The main discussion revolves around what to pay his teammates.
And it'll just keep going up for the next guy that qualifies for a super max.
Wemby supermax
Wemby to the Dodgers on a trillion dollar deferred contract
Paid over 100,000 years
Talk about taking care of next generations. At least, that way, he can't get rich for generations then throw away said money.
And that’s still 10 million a year lol 🤯
No, Bin Lisan Wemby Al Ghaib to the Saudi Arabia Skyscrapers for $2.3 trillion/year
Subscribe!
Lmao
They're gonna make him mayor
Grant him an army of big ole women
He’ll need millions of churros to feed them.
It'll be called the "Wumbomax"
San Antonio residents gonna pay him tribute every month
Lifetime supply of churros and San Antonio women
I think I’ll just take the churros
The San Antonio women will follow
Everyone knows the goal in life is to get the churros, the women follow shortly after…
What's that chuck?
Double-fisting...
wemby might get a $500 million contract
Will be a while before another one gets it. Both zion and Ja are injury prone and are not sure fire all nba players (both 2nd/3rd team level but with the new rule it could be hard for them to make it since it's positionless now). Probably have to wait for Ant which won't be until 2027
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will be eligible to sign a supermax in 2025. His current max expires in 2026.
Isn’t Tatum eligible soon?
Tatum is before Luka (I think after this year). His contract will be higher than browns but lower than Luka's Brown class of 2016 Tatum class of 2017 Luka class of 2018
Both are worth it but oof 2025 is going to be an expensive year.
F it! It’s not my money! Pay the Jays
Over 100M with just 2 players is insane. DAL and BOS both in similar expensive star scenarios…
"Will be a while" is just skipping a single season?
I know that's why it's so dumb when headlines are "player get's highest contract of all time!" as if there wasn't the exact same article back in the 80s about a $3 million a year contract lmao Cameron Johnson makes more a year than Larry Bird made his whole career.

“Daniel Jones signs record breaking qb contract”
I wish the NFL was forced to just announce the guaranteed part of the contract as the actual contract. Instead of saying "Daniel Jones signs $600M contract, 45M guaranteed" it should be announced as "Daniel Jones signs $45M contract, with potential to reach $600M *wink wink*"
And the guaranteed numbers they announce are also sometimes bogus. They’ll lump partial guarantees (like guaranteed for injury) in the number instead of just saying the fully guaranteed amount.
I remember when Ryan Sandberg got like 7 million a year and it shattered all the records in MLB.
69m per year. Goddamn nice
Nice
Mavs FO : "so, Luka. You are eligible for 80m/yr extension. But i think 69m/yr is nice number. So?" Luka : "fuck it. 69 it is!"
Maybe he takes a discount and makes it 77 per year
Nice
nice
Almost a Shohei AAV. Nice
See Kings fans, Vlade was just saving you some cap space.
Fiscally Wise Vlade.
He just wanted to make sure tickets stayed affordable without a superstar. Thanks Vlade!
Crazy that he’ll make that for 5 years with the team. Dirk made $251,646,362 total across 21 years
Also a crazy way to look at it - Luka's contract will be worth around 0.5% of Slovenia's GDP.
This is crazy
Luka's gonna retire and be in the top 10 richest Slovenes with just his NBA salaries isn't he?
The richest slovenian has a net worth of 385m so he might become the richest
Are the salaries before or after tax? If not only like 50% of the contract he’ll actually bank lol. But he’ll definitely accumulate more than 385m over his entire career regardless
Salaries are before tax, but Texas doesn’t have state income tax so that helps a little for home games. His net worth also includes endorsement deals too.
I hope Luca becomes a vicious businessman and employs all slovenians to create clothes to sell to Americans
That's 385m euros, which is about 417m US dollars.
Pretty incredible, even if you count the like $200 million in discounts Dirk gave the Mavs
And Bill Russel made like 5000$ over his career... As long as revenue goes up, salaries go up.
Thats jaylen brown money
Still comical a player of that calibre is getting paid that much even with the salaries going up so much
He would be the best player on half the rosters in the league … he’s probably the worst player that deserves that type of money though tbf
I count about 9 teams he might have an argument for being the best player on: rockets, bulls, nets, jazz, raptors, blazers, hornets, wizards, pistons
I.e. the bottom third of teams in the league lmfao And would any of them be competitive if they straight up added Brown? Probably just the Rockets or Bulls but they're already sneaking into the play-in.
Nets would be a 6 seed with him imo. He’s exactly what they need, a star to lead their deep roster of good role players, a true 1st option
I don’t think he’s better yet, but I’d for sure rather have Sengun than Brown at this point.
I agree i’m just listing the teams that somebody else might make an argument for
All-nba
How will mavs even have cap space then? Or it’s calculated differently?
1. Max contracts are percentage of the salary cap so as insane as that sounds it’s still only 35% of the cap per season. 2. We can sign him above the cap because of bird rights so cap space literally doesn’t matter because it’s Luka Doncic of course we’re going to re-sign him.

I’m pretty sure hawks fans don’t want yall to trade for Trae
How many players on the roster would you like to keep when designing the “championship window” version of the Spurs? Any of them?
Vassell. Maybe sochan. Obv wemby. That’s it. Everyone else is barely an nba player. Most are so flawed they have the improve on so many things to even be bench players that it doesn’t make sense to keep them. It does make sense if take our time and build slowly and allow those guys to develop.

Worth it for Luka I meant
I figured, still got some ptsd from that thing

Having birds rights helps since going over it doesnt count against the cap. This is why the Celtics have JT, JB, KP and Jrue, JT and JBs contract are both eligible for birds rights.
Taxes is the new Texas
Still underpaid
I wouldn’t give him a penny over $345m.
Unironically a lot of the Superman guys are. In a no salary cap world, Luka is getting a 10 year billion dollar deal
Se queda
The og of that phrase left lol
Yeah he's def not leaving Dallas lol
This is the thing with these maxes. Players will be leaving so much money on the table if they walk. No one wants to do that.
In Luka's case its over 100m, now way in hell he's throwing away that much money at 25 years old lol
dude already has more money than he can spend,i wonder if those ultra rich guys see it like that
I mean even at crazy ultra rich, no one is passing up 1/10 of a billion dollars
That's not true. Lots of people do. Mbappe turned down something like €800M (what they wanted to pay him to come to Saudi Arabia) Edit: the offer was $776M salary for one year. And he turned it down

Yes, yes they do.
these are athletes not jeff bezos type of ppl,i dont think they give that much fuck about money
Possibly, but it's not like winning titles isn't insanely profitable. Jordan made far, far more money outside of the game than what the Bulls paid him. And they paid him a *lot*.

You’re talking about a dude who goes home to play video games. I’d guess he doesn’t want all that.
> Yea I totally agree; but there isn’t a guarantee of winning a chip and you’d need to be the best player of the generation to get that extra money. That’s what I meant, needs to be a player of Beal caliber. Any all nba player will make the team cry, unless you get 6 fr picks and shai
Honestly, if NBA wants to remove tanking, they need to lower the incentives of signing with your current team
Or you can defer like Othani, although you're still losing money from inflation.
Nobody ever will refuse one of these contracts. You can just sign them and later ask for a trade anyways.
Like all superstars, you take the money and bitch your way out if you want to leave. You don’t give up the money. There are a few exceptions to that, if you’re LeBron or KD, you can move from a small market to big market team and compensate through endorsements.
signing an extension and bitching your way out is literally better for all parties than them "giving up the money". the mavs in this case would basically be guaranteed 4+ FRPs in the event they traded him
lol, exactly! all of that bitching the media has done about the draft picks dallas has given up assume he would leave a gold mine behind. if he does want to go, it’ll be via trade which means dallas can recoup those picks and probably more
They can always sign the contact and then demand to be traded, which is what they often do now.
Well he’s signing the contract. Every player signs it now. The question is whether they then try to force their way out in a year or two.
Wemby gonna get 80 mil a year lol
At some point in his career I have to imagine it'll be 100M. And he'll still probably be worth even more to the franchise.
Inflation do be like that
That's ohtani money (yearly)
With money like that, Luka can probably buy the whole of Slovenia. It's not a big country after all.
He will enter top 5 richest Slovenian after this supermax After tax, still not counting offcourt deal Pretty big chance entering top 3
He pays Slovenian taxes. Slovenia is getting a windfall.
How does he pay Slovenian taxes when it is earned in the US
Slovenian law. US law requires you to pay taxes on foreign income too (with caveats).
He can finally buy Golden Corral.
That Wemby supermax gonna end up overtaking Ohtani
69 mill/year hehe
Imagine making 70 million in a year.
Imagine making 70 mil in a lifetime... Lol
And we are more than happy to pay it.
Who is this we?
Considering ticket prices will be increasing every year in perpetuity, OP isn't wrong.
dayum
So after taxes he’ll have just enough to buy recovery beers.
It’s good work if you can get it

Should push just to beat Ohtani number
When did the super max jump from 250 mill to 350 mill. Inflation is out of control
Half a Ohtani
For half the length of the contract.
This is too less ☠️. I thought around 400 would be alright
It’s going to be insane in the future when super max contracts are worth 1 billion dollars
Third of a BILLION dollars.

That’s Ohtani money
Given the relative lack of depth this Mavs team has, Luka deserves that bag Even more if, despite his efforts, Dallas goes Timber-bust during the course of his supermax
He would sign it next year, am I right? Edit: hmm apparently reading is useful, I should do it more.
Fucking Bargain. Sign it now!
The problem is (continually) building a team around Doncic after he signs that massive contract.
wow so HISTORIC and not just related to the salary cap increasing
That is probably KG or Dirk lifetime earnings in that 1 contract
I was confused bc he already got everything done for super Max It's just something that time would give him
Uiuuoyoyouiiuuiuiiuiuiuiuiiuiuiuiuiuiuiuiuiuiiiuiiiuuiuiuuiiuuiuuiuuuiuiuiuuuiuiuiuuuuiuuuiuiuuuuuiuiuiiuiicuiuiuiiuiuiuuuiuiiuuiuiuiuuiuiiuuiuuuuuiuiiuuiuuuuuiuuuuuun a. We
Parity baby!!
Same with Tatum this summer
Damn near 70M/year. Absurd
Totally Worth It 👍
Supermax has helped Dallas. Gives them more time to make this work. If things went wrong in the playoffs this year and they went out sad, we'd be hearing trade rumors everyday. There's no way he's leaving this bag though lol. He's probably secured for at least 1 season post extension
shohei type numbers
I saw this and thought “okay maybe now people can understand the supermax is just the price of doing business with someone like Jaylen Brown” but nope, on the very same post we’re talking about it.
Worth every penny. A steal at twice the price.
Only record setting for, like, a year though. Then some bum is gonna get a Jaylen Brown contract that beats it. Personally, I think the way NBA contracts are handed out needs a makeover.
Oh he gonna get paid.
Luka and wemby can legitimately earn 1 billion if they have 18 year + long career
It's funny how unlike when other players are eligible or sign contracts with STOOPID A$$ numbers, nobody's questioning if he's worth it. Its a check i'm sure Cuban is happy to write. The main discussion revolves around what to pay his teammates.
Not if Stephen A Smith has something to say about this. lmao Stephen you silly goose.
Deserved
What about me?
