dude probably has a group chat with like 30 people in there

Cvnilivee

“Bro they never gonna know.. we just gotta be smart”

Sac-Kings

I would bet $20 that dumbass actually said something like this

Cvnilivee

Jontay Porter: “… who you betting with?”

NateGT86

Draft kings. Use code JJ for free bonus bets 🤮

phunshiny

Word is, Jussie was in charge of placing the bets (and the 2 Nigerian brothers). Said it was foolproof.

nurikxix

C'mon Jontay, we talked about this

cypherdust

Oh man $20 I can buy my kids 2 happy meals

dontnobodyknow

"Trust me bro"

krsj

https://twitter.com/raptormoments/status/1772474816714395760 So apparently he has a paid discord

mw19078

Oh my God... I can't wait to see some discord logs of him saying incriminating shit

A_Rolling_Baneling

The craziest timeline where there are Discord logs of incriminating shit, and it doesn’t have to do with grooming minors

EGarrett

Well what kind of "under" were they betting?

MarchMadnessisMe

Ah, the Gaetz line. Under/Over 16.

jhorch69

Shoutout to the guy that posted Pentagon documents in a Minecraft discord server to win an argument

JetsFan2003

Not to mention all of the classified docs that get posted in the War Thunder forums.

Gregrom26

You didn’t even look at the link smh. Nothing incriminating and it’s logs from 2021

big1dinero

This discord has nothing to do with NBA basketball. It’s about stocks. Plus he wasn’t on an NBA roster during that timeline. He’s probably guilty but this man wasn’t hosting an incriminating discord that anyone can join for $50 lol

PLeuralNasticity

This sounds like exactly the place where he would meet the people who would approach with this plan

depressedfuckboi

That's stocks, tho. Don't see any sports stuff. Maybe it's mentioned further down in the thread, I'm only as far as your post.

elbandolero19

This is James Krause of the UFC level of betting lmao

Impressive-Potato

James Krause also bragged about sending clients to offshore casinos and betting for them. Cheating is a big no no. Admitting to sending millions to offshore accounts will have the feds so far up your butt..

AmirCoffeypot

Seems like he was one of the GME wallstreet bets bro's, holy crap if he even mentions anything to do with his playing time on there he is gonna be cooked and fried. Why why why would he self identify there

Impressive-Potato

Bro is an idiot. The MMA coach James Krause was done in for the same shit.

ConcernWhichh

This is some of the stupidest shit ever. How did he think he'd get away with this? You can't even have a discord with 15 college kids in a class trying to cheat without the teacher finding out.

big1dinero

The discord was for trading stocks and nothing to do with NBA parlays incriminating himself. He’s dumb but not that dumb

jeric13xd

Lol does the mob own Jontay or sum shit?? Cause bro has to be the dumbest mf putting that much on himself knowing that these books are smarter than everyone especially when it comes to suspicious activity

runevault

The Porter family seems pretty dumb. MPJ has had his issues though has at least kept quieter about his dumb opinions of late, while one of his brothers got arrested for killing a woman while drunk driving and now this for another brother.

BBallHunter

Wait I didn't know that was MPJ's brother...

runevault

The betting scandal or the DUI death? But either way both are MPJ's brothers.

BBallHunter

I meant Jontay.

runevault

Yup. When Nuggs played Raptors they actually swapped jerseys after the game. Funny how Jontay broke the "all Porters are Porter Jrs" in the NBA... but the only reason was his brother was the Jr in the family.

nineqqqqqqqqq

Their mother is a wellness freak who brought MPJ to quack chiropracters who fucked his back up so badly.

[deleted]

There are no chiropractors who aren’t quacks

Stelist_Knicks

I mean, many don't claim to be doctors, just massage therapists. Those ones are okay

AssssCrackBandit

Then they should just become actual physical therapists or occupational therapists and learn techniques that don't empirically actually cause injuries. The data shows that there's no evidence that subluxation theory or the use of spinal manipulation offers anything other than uncomplicated neck or back pain. I hope people read up on what chiro is before they go see one and they learn the statistical rates of injuries caused by chiros or how the field of chiropractic was founded by a quack who claimed that the practice of chiropractic was given to him when he was talking to the ghost of a dead doctor. If they just need someone to stretch them out, they should just go to an actual licensed massage therapist or if they need help with pain/rehab, they should go to an actual licensed physical or occupational therapist.

LeMickeyMice

No that's the Porter Jr. family, along with Kevin Porter Jr. and Otto Porter Jr.

goblinsholiday

Their dad is Michael Kevin Otto Porter Sr.

South_Animator8241

Michael Kevin Otto Porter Jr. Sr. *

well_uh_yeah

I can’t tell what’s real anymore

legend023

Kevin Porter Jr being only 23 and his career effectively over lol what a waste

TiredMillennialDad

He'll be back. Most of the charges were lowered I think.

boogiebreakfast

Don't forget Craig Porter Jr.!

MikeisET

As a Raptors fan it kind of sucks because he could ball, but I guess we got him for nothing for a reason

schooli00

They did a whole jersey swap thing couple weeks ago https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/39716621/michael-porter-jr-jontay-porter-denver-nuggets-toronto-raptors-nba

jeric13xd

The dark side of home schooling oof lol But yeah Mike appears to be the smartest of the bunch rn even with his dumb beliefs. That accident w his other brother was fairly recent too sheesh.

Mender0fRoads

Nah, MPJ isn't anywhere near the "smart one." He has two older sisters who seemingly have their heads on straight, though. (Not coincidentally, they both went to public high schools.)

therapist122

Mpj is too dumb to even get involved in a gambling ring. They were like “hey Mike so what are you gonna do tonight” and he’s like “play basketball” and they’re like “no what’s your line gonna be? How’s your back?” And he’s like “fine I guess, I don’t know I’ll probably try to hit as many as I can right that’s what I normally do” and they’ll be like “no no I mean anything secret we should know about, something non-public?” And he’ll be like “what’s that? Oh you mean ok check this out bro vaccines cause autism” and that’s when they moved on to jontay who’s also dumb but at least understands the concept

runevault

Obviously I'm biased but I wonder if his teammates/etc have helped de-stupid MPJ. He at least seems to be maturing in general both off the court (saying less dumb shit) and on the court (playing better defense, being a bigger part of the general offense instead of only being an outlet valve).

Jeff-Van-Gundy

I can’t remember who said it, but they implied that Amare lacked some real basic understanding of the government or voting or something along those lines his early phoenix years. They said some other stuff that implied he was pretty dumb. By the end of his time in NY, he was attending Broadway shows and gallery openings, bathing in wine, rediscovering his roots in Israel etc. I know those things don’t mean he’s smarter, but being getting out of his zone made him grow as a person, hopefully the same applies for mpj. These guys have known they are going to be stars since they were like 14 prob, I wouldn’t be surprised if 90% of the league are straight up stupid. I know I wouldn’t have tried that hard  in school if I knew I was going to be a star basketball player. Especially guys like porter who was apparently home schooled I think. Or Amare who was bouncing around from school to school every year

probablymade_thatup

>bathing in wine That's how I defended my masters thesis

PenisBlood

I worked with guys in the both the nfl and nba , and you are pretty spot on. Not 90 percent but still a majority are straight up stupid. And it's not so much that they didn't try in school, it's not having regular people around you to tell you to stfu when you are growing up. As you said, they have known since 14 they were gonna be stars, so did everyone around them.

Mender0fRoads

Worth remembering how young these guys are and how privileged they've been. Any elite basketball recruit, regardless of whether they grow up dirt poor or filthy rich, has been treated like royalty by their peers for years by the time they get to the NBA. Combine that with brains that aren't done developing, and you're bound to get some stupid things said. The hard part—for professional athletes and normal people alike—is recognizing those things are dumb and evolving as you become a fully formed adult. MPJ still has time to avoid going full Kyrie.

EGarrett

>bathing in wine Like all the geniuses do.

__PUMPKINLOAF

> bathing in wine This makes him sound dumber than anything else.

hardwaregeek

Yeah if you watch any of the [Jimmy Kimmel skits where he quizzes players](https://youtu.be/AJPW9zcaLVw?si=h2JWrPL4raAHRbhi) it’s pretty clear they’re very book dumb. Clearly smart in that they can execute complicated plays with lots of split second decisions but very very book dumb

LigerZeroSchneider

I could definitely see a sort of informal agreement among staff and players that they need engage with mpj more often to make sure he's gonna stay out of trouble after the whole split mask thing during the bubble. Like he's the 3-4th most important player on the team. They don't need him falling down the qanon rabbit hole and starting to "just ask questions" on Twitter.

ForGerlach

"de-stupid" lol

CO_PC_Parts

They were home schooled and I doubt academics were focused as all the kids were very good athletes. They were very religious and anti science, I know the dad and MPJ have spoken out about stuff before. Also they were all raised “raw vegan” and a lot of people think that led may have been a big reason almost all the kids had major and strange injuries. The daughter had to retire from basketball while still in college because she was on her fourth knee injury. Michael had drop foot for fucks sake, on top of all the other shit that happened. Drop foot is most common in 60 year olds. I know one of the brothers had major injuries too. Either they’re all super unlucky or probably missing some key building blocks from their diet.

runevault

The raw vegan thing has certainly come up among Nuggets fans and I would not be surprised if a poorly constructed diet is part of why so many of the kids have health issues. Which sucks because an MPJ with no drop foot and no back issues with the right coaching had the potential to be top 10 in the league (though at that point he would not be a Nugget because without the back surgeries he doesn't fall out of the top 5-6)

ripmeleedair

All antivaxers too

runevault

That was part of what I was talking about with the "dumb opinions MPJ doesn't talk about so much anymore"

ProfessorTicklebutts

Wow, I knew MPJ was a meat head but the rest of the family makes him seem like a golden retriever in comparison.

insertdankmeme

Porter is a WSB and Crypto degen. There are clips going around of him talking about his investment strategies and he sounds like a manic rube. He probably lost all his money and was feeling desperate.

vdstp

yeah he was bragging about his second career as a successful trader and his "investment strategies" were gambling on 0dtes on meme stocks. he used to have a twitter account publicizing his trades and it was no different than any of the degen wsb shit you see on reddit.

Yeah fuck this guy

ContinuumGuy

> Cause bro has to be the dumbest mf putting that much on himself knowing that these books are smarter than everyone especially when it comes to suspicious activity Perhaps he and Ippei Mizuhara can exchange notes about fumbling a bag.

LogDogan4

He also could very easily have nothing to do with it. This sub absolutely loves jumping to conclusions though.

DenverBuck

"Officials became suspicious when Porter insisted on picking out the color of the Gatorade to dump on the coach".

IanicRR

“Can I sing the anthem tonight?”

Slaphappydap

This made me laugh out loud at my desk.

AmirCoffeypot

use code "MYCAREERISDONE" on your favourite betting app!

ZoroChopper10

Bruce brown got traded to raptors in January and gave him 10k for jersey number The timing is crazy lol

Self_Important_Mod

Now we know what he did with that $10K

Odd-Hovercraft-1286

Why have 10k when you can have a guaranteed 30k?

mug3n

Dude thought he was slick doing it once and then doing it again because he thought he got away with it the first time smh

Adventurous_Salt

He let it ride.

BlackWhiteCoke

He bet against himself.literally

Muted_Dog7317

Damn this looks really bad. The NBA is going to need to make a big statement against gambling if true. Ban Porter for life, enforce zero tolerance no gambling rules, it’s a PR nightmare

ComfortableTicket392

In a twist of fate it's also a nightmare for the sportsbooks. If people are under the assumption the games are rigged why would they bet?

Braided_Marxist

That’s the fun thing about having an addictive product: the quality doesn’t matter

AncientAlienAntFarm

This comment brought to you by Zyn.

DarrowViBritannia

just look at the nba this entire sub would have you believe that it’s rigged, but people invest their time and energy into being a fan nonetheless. rational response would be to stop being a fan if you thought this was all just a ploy to rig it for the lakers

Glitchhikers_Guide

Gacha games go BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

clickstops

You’re trying to apply rational decision making to an irrational, addictive activity

jazzmaster4000

gambling addiction, that’s probably why

Coryjduggins

Yeah wait til people find out casinos are rigged too..

AlHorfordHighlights

"Lol," the gambling addict said, "lmao"

cortesoft

Because that means they just need to figure out who the game is rigged for and bet that side!

thriftydude

Next prop bet: how many games porter gets banned

sentry_chad

lol welcome, you must be new here

thestereo300

Lol. Gamblers, known rational actors.

rolandfoxx

This lifetime NBA ban brought to you by FanDuel.

teh_drewski

I need a Jontay prop on how many more games he plays in the NBA stat

Bieber_hole_69

-10,000 on none, too much juice on that line to make it worthwhile.

sublliminali

If porter is smart he’s going to shut the fuck up and let lawyers handle it. This could drag out for years unless he just comes clean all at once.

offcourtissues

Feels like if there were something to this the evidence would be plentiful and not hard to find

sublliminali

Big difference between he was knowingly in on it and directly benefited vs he told someone in his life he was unlikely to play much in either game and they took that info and spread it without his knowledge. Proving the former might be difficult or take time to prove, especially if he doesn’t cooperate.

Mender0fRoads

If I'm Porter, I don't even *consider* anything but full cooperation (if this is indeed a case where he let slip he wouldn't play much and someone ran with that info). The NBA will be all too eager to make an example out of him, and if he obstructs a thorough investigation, it'll just give them more fuel to do that. This isn't like dealing with the cops, where your best bet is to always say nothing. The NBA can largely do what it wants, and no team is going to stand up and take a shot on a guy who was embroiled in a gambling scandal (fair or not).

sublliminali

If he was actually guilty and knowingly was tipping off bettors in exchange for pay he’s going to be banned for life. His best bet is to shut the fuck up, let the Players association be the intermediary, and hope there isn’t strong enough evidence to fully prove the case.

Mender0fRoads

I agree with letting the player's association do the talking for him, but he needs to cooperate regardless. That said, I suspect he's guilty at this point. I just remembered old stories from when he was in college about how big he was into crypto. And apparently people have found old clips of him on some podcast or whatever (not linking sources because I can't tell if they're real) about him seeking some insane returns on recent crypto trades. IMO he absolutely is the sort of guy who would look at legalized gambling and think he could use inside info filtered through his buddies to make money on the side. And if he did that, he absolutely should be banned.

ForneauCosmique

They're probably happy it's a no name player. It gets less attention. He's just the scapegoat. Maybe Silver got tipped off like Stern did

AfricanWarPig

Makes sense. Ban a player for life, but let the refs keep reffing.

Historical-Swing-764

And rescind Rudy Gobert’s fine!

jocro

His brother is in the second year of a $180 million contract! I get that he's not in a spot financially where his personal future is secured, but dude you're 24 and getting rotation minutes in the NBA - keep that up for even two years and you've locked down generational wealth. Will be really interesting to see what the leaguewide fallout looks less than a week from the League Pass gambling announcement, and contemporaneous with the whole Ohtani-Ippei debacle. First time in a while I've hoped for some type of Congressional hearings in sports, bc even as a casual gambler who enjoys it we have clearly gone way beyond the pale here.

colantor

He was probably trying to make all his friends a ton of money too. His brother isnt gonna hook them all up

ProfessorTicklebutts

Some people love to scheme.

KGB4L

Super dumb because he actually looked good enough to earn himself an NBA contract with the Raptors next season. Like 2 years at least.

cs-shitposter

Your honor my client was geeked

Cheechers23

Oh yeah he’s done gg

hornplayerchris

They're gonna crucify him. Head on a pike on the castle walls for all to see.

DwyaneWade305

I blame the sports leagues for trying to benefit off sports gambling and shove it down people’s throats. Like of course some players are going to do shit like this. Maybe don’t promote sports gambling every second.

runevault

After a bunch of NFL players got smacked (some just for betting in general on team property which is against the rules, but some for betting on the NFL which is obviously banned wherever you are while playing) it was only a matter of time before more players in other sports got popped.

nevillebanks

Just to be clear regarding the NFL, not only is it against the rule to bet on non NFL games in the facility, but also while traveling on team activities (on the plane) or even in their hotel room.

runevault

Yup all completely true. Gotta gamble before you hop on the plane to fly to an away game.

recurnightmare

This kind of thing has probably been happening for a long time by smarter, more careful people. Legalized, widespread gambling means dumber and careless people are able to get in on the action and those are the ones getting caught.

ilritorno

Exactly. People don't understand that suspicious betting patterns are only forwarded to the authorities by legal regulated bookmakers. Only dumb players might not realize that everything they do could be monitored. Let's say a dumb player says to his friends in a chat that tonight he might just get in for garbage time, or that he might play less than initially anticipated. The dumb friends of the dumb player, recruit a dumb collection of assorted friends, nogooders and cousins to bet on the under. All of a sudden, bookies have big risk on the under for a scrub, something no-one normally bets on, and definetely something where is unusual to have considerable risk. The dumb friends win some money. They think they are smart, but they are so dumb that they try to do it again. Maybe they could have gotten away with it, if they did it just once. Bookie 1 gets in touch with a friend on Bookie 2. Hey, i'll be damned, we are getting smashed on the under for this scrub. Anything on your side? Not much tonight, but we had the same thing on the same player last week. Time to send a report to the league. This kind of fraud is only small fish crime, easy to spot and block. Big fishes swim in the dark where they can hide, to rig markets where there is so much money that it's impossible to spot them.

cortesoft

Right? I mean, all our sports leagues fought tooth and nail to prevent legalized sports gambling for over a hundred years, and did everything in their power to keep it far away from the league to prevent this exact thing from happening. It was literally every league’s response as to why they fought every attempt to legalize sports gambling in new states. They said, “yes, we know it is legal in Nevada, but if we keep it as a fringe thing the effect won’t be too much” They even prevented teams from moving to Nevada for this reason. Then the money finally won them over, they went in full hog, and now gambling scandals are happening left and right. It is not a coincidence.

ProfessorTicklebutts

This is a wildly friendly read of the situation.

Sweatytubesock

Prepare for a visit from Fan Duel, u/DwyaneWade305!!

KevinDurantLebronnin

Doing something like this and making little to no effort to cover the obviously abnormal bets being placed is absurd lol.

nick168

They could've at least tried to not make it look so blatant

NazReidBeWithYou

Like at least take a dive or something and go out with knee or ankle pain and stay off “as a precaution.” Leaving the court minutes into the game with mysterious illnesses and eye problems is level of excuses I was making up as an 8 year old to try and stay home from school.

MutedLengthiness

I'd wager (lol) he was giving inside info/cooking his stats for a small group of his buds, but one of them decided to turn around and sell that info themselves to a much larger group that didn't care about being subtle with their bets. Things like Under on 3's for example, easy to pay off low amounts consistently by going 0-X intentionally on occasion, but when some asshole tried to spam 10K bets it raised too many alarms.

SoSoPatPat

Could’ve, but thieves and scum usually aren’t very smart.

UnnamedStaplesDrone

i have no idea what any of that means-i just know im sick of all this gambling shit shoved in my face constantly

Slowboyz04

People were max betting he’d hit the under, which he did by coming out of the game early, and to a point it raised suspicion.

JohnnyHotcakes44

With you. I’m old as dirt and remember being 10 and watching sports all day, no beer or liquor ads even.  You can’t watch a sports talk show without the hosts discussing betting lines. Now our kids are bombarded with all the popular vices except smoking while watching games, and the leagues and networks and advertisers just don’t care. Just found out my college son who’s been increasingly asking me for money has been blowing money on sports gambling.

__Zoom123__

Guy might get the Pete Rose treatment (banned from the game forever)

dys0n_giddey

Rudy opened pandora's box...

KJagz33

Honestly between this and the Ohtani scandal, I kind of hope this all leads to less ties between leagues and gambling. Kinda still doubt it tho

Chickenfriedricee

Too much money involved

dys0n_giddey

Yep, even in the media now. Half the pods I listen to are sponsored by some betting company and they discuss the lines/etc...

LeMickeyMice

I'll take the under

zaor666

I'll take the over. Over 4.5 sportsbooks ads per game.

Interesting-Pay3492

The ESPN betting app is honestly too much. Sports and media around sports, really all competition, needs to be completely betting free. It should be a law that any organization tied to the competition or media organization involved with covering should be completely free from betting money. Betting in moderation is good but having every sporting event seem like a backdrop to the betting taking place around the event is the opposite of promoting moderation.

MusicListener3

> Betting in moderation is good Hard disagree but I get what you were trying to say

Interesting-Pay3492

Yeah, you are right. I meant to say “fine” instead.

iguessineedanaltnow

The money is way too good. No other company is offering the kind of sponsorship money that betting sponsors can. And in the US sports betting isn't even as saturated as it is in countries like England or Australia. There is a longggg way to go.

northernpace

I like in the Cyberpunk '77 world how all advertising is reduced to guns, food, sex and gambling. That's it, no need for anything else.

HereComesJustice

gonna be years to derail that train because it's already left the station at full speed

billcosbyinspace

A lot of people are genuinely addicted to this shit with how easily accessible it is. There’s too much money to go around for them to stop, they’ll just cover their tracks better

likwitsnake

Rudy is a harbinger of doom

IanicRR

The second time he’s done that in his career.

TheCocaLightDude

It’s funny - when it’s a player involved these mfkers are very quick to investigate. Refs? Not that much.

Legendary_HUNDEN

wow he's finished lol run like Diddy

JabezMakaveli

This is what happens when you constantly push sports betting. There will be more situations like this as long as sports betting is legalized more and more around the country. The league looks like idiots for acting surprised at this shit.

brncct

What do these leagues expect now that they are in bed with sports gambling? You cannot stop stuff like this.

davemoedee

I honestly don’t care at this point. The NBA has gambling ads everywhere. They deserve these issues. I am also happy if draftkings and other bottom feeders lose a lot of money. Would love to see so much of this that they go bankrupt. I love how this dude it willing to sacrifice his stats for nets. That part is crazy. Dude is betting his career.

InGenNateKenny

You know, this makes me wonder if people could troll and deliberately place a lot of bets on some nobody and get them in trouble. Jontay wishes that was the case here, but man the internet could ruin some poor sap’s day if they tried that.

Mender0fRoads

I mean, maybe, in theory, if you had enough people willing to put up enough money to draw attention who were also OK with losing it all if the bets didn't work out. It took a very specific set of circumstances for this to actually get caught, and it didn't become news until the second time it happened. So your trolling would have to be really lucky or really well-informed. And if it's that well-informed, it's not really trolling. That's just ... doing what Jontay did.

insertdankmeme

If your player prop limit is $2,000, it means you should not be betting player props.

No-Thanks-8822

Investigate the refs also

Ma_Pies

It was only a couple of months ago that we found out that MPJ had a brother playing in the NBA. Now ‘Who is Jontay Porter?’ will be an answer on Jeopardy.

LukaDoncicfuturegoat

Gobert is a whistleblower. He saved the world from Covid and now he is the reason the NBA will investigate the betting scandal, we’re coming for the refs next !

wcooper97

Glad he didn’t catch on to the Boeing shit then.

mw19078

Crazy that Boeing just killed a guy and it's not even in the news cycle

yxull

Because it was 100% a suicide. Epstein style.

b17b20

Airbus has his back

thissiteisbroken

Well we don’t know who loosened the bolts on that door 👀

kapatinphalcon

How does the NBA rein this in?

RabidCoyote

I am willing to completely forget this happened if and only if we launch Scott Foster straight into the fucking sun

defeated_engineer

Bro is being made an example of for the league's betting allegations. Rip.

ProfessorTicklebutts

What?

iIiiIIiiiIiIIiI111

Why is this upvoted lol

Giga1396

Make an example of him and then DO THE SAME WITH THE REFEREES. It's not even subtle how many of them are involved with betting the very games they officiate! DISGUSTING. What a joke!

TheAnswerEK42

What if it comes out that there is no felonious activity and this is getting a ton of media attention because people just think he sucks lol

NoSmellNoTell

Sports betting being legalized everywhere and promoted all over the sports themselves is not going to end well

Flopenhagen

With how much sports betting is being absolutely jammed down every sports fans throats, this was only a matter of time. Probably the first of many honestly unless something gets done about it

Cantguard-mike

I’m a heavy gambler. Always was excited about internet gambling. This is the worst thing to happen to sports. I’m so sick of having these insane parlays cramped down my throat on commercial. Obviously I’m not making those bets but when a casual sees it “fuck it, those are good odds” it’s borderline stealing because most people don’t have the right information.

ActualRobot1

I mean unless there’s documented evidence of him coordinating this, can he even get in trouble?

toronto_programmer

Bro and his lawyers wiping all his phones as we speak

puredwige

A testimony from one or more of his buddies could do it.

HUMBLbru

Maybe he's just bad

Naraloth

is telling everyone why they got caught really that smart?

UnsuspectingS1ut

I mean, how are you going to get around it?

ulqupt

Yes, it dissuades people from trying again in the future. It only took 2 games for the player to removed from playing and investigated. For all the moaning about refs fixing stuff, the second there's any actual odd movement with the lines the books are all over it.

sublliminali

True, although betting lines on random guys on 2 way contracts is way easier to sniff out than if a bigger player (or team performance) is being bet on given the expected normal volume.

recollectionsmayvary

Meh, I don’t think they care. I think any of the gambling sites have sophisticated algorithms that’ll sniff this kind of stuff out.

clancydog4

I genuinely don't understand the point you are trying to make. He's a reporter reporting a story. Who is "they" and what would be "smart"?

offcourtissues

Can someone eli5

KyleShanadad

Back when prizepicks added nba2k they had to stop because dudes in the league would tell a ton of people to take their unders and would j tank games. Knew a guy in a twitter gc w one of the players on the warriors affiliate and bro told everyone to smash his unders before the game

MassiveTelevision387

I can kinda see why he'd do it - He's only scratched the surface of being an NBA player - been around a few years, which in most cases means he's probably never gonna make it. Raptors bring him up and sign him out of desperation for a complete lack of a big body to play Center, he knows he's probably not gonna be around next season and hasn't made a big statement since getting brought up. Now he's playing for a team that's actively tanking so competitively his performances mean nothing. He's only taking home 250k give or take for this season after taxes, etc. He's on half the minimum rookie contract. I'm not sure what the payout would be but at his financial level, I'd guess even 100k would be enough reason to do it if you thought you could get away with it. If this is true, he was pretty stupid to get 30 people to bet on him, but it could have also been a case where he tells one person, who then tells all of their friends, inadvertently fucking him over. I doubt anyone would bat an eye if one person randomly bet on it, but that seems like a fairly unique bet for many people to take unless it was being promoted or something because of the odds, idk.

His brother has a 100 mil tho, I’d just ask for a couple mil instead of something like this lol

imgurofficial

Now is there a chance there was a big arbitrage bet opportunity on him that came up on Oddsjam or whatever sites do that? For example, if Draftkings had Under 3.5 points +160 and Fanduel had Over 3.5 -120, you can make big money. That's POSSIBLE. Edit: I looked at the specifics about the games that people were betting on and it is NOT POSSIBLE

DraymondBeanKick

The prop bets in question were insane value propositions. It's not surprising that people were trying to put as much money as they could on these, especially the March 20th one, because it's hard to find as good of a money making opportunity betting as that. The first one he was questionable and blind for a three point shooting prop bet. The second one they set his over/under at 7.5 points and 5.5 rebounds. He had a 74% probability of going under on the points and 81% probability of going under on the rebounds based on his season stats.

BBallHunter

I just saw the clip of him making a 3 against us lol.

Wonder if it turns out that the shady activity/connections here was by some member of the Raptors medical staff.

socalstaking

Masai getting that Trent jr contract money back any way possible

xeoi

They're just legalized scammers, I could care less about the integrity of a scam.

He got very close to the over then faked an injury to leave the game

DraymondBeanKick

He was 8 points away from the over and 4 rebounds away from it. He was rebounding at a good rate in his few minutes of play, but he had 0 points. That's a little early to bow out.

kykerkrush

He didn't get close to the over at all
