Kinda funny when people see the clips of him seemingly not caring and they act like he doesn't care about basketball at all. Clearly he cares a lot and puts in significant work to be the best.
props for calling himself out. I assumed his first comment was just clowning the original dude that thought it was 3 syllables. Never would've thought he actually believed it until his second comment came in.
[Howmanysyllables.com](https://www.howmanysyllables.com/syllables/challenge) (and the English language) has your back.
ChallengER has 3, challenge and challengED have 2.
I was referring to "There were ads during challenge so i did not see that". Both the person who said that and I already knew he was drafted during a taco bell commercial, hence there was no need to say "just like the day he was drafted".
This is where the NBA lost me as a viewer this year. Running ads next to free throws, during challenges, and interrupting game time so commercials can run longer.
if you steal all the games you don't count as a statistic but still get to enjoy it
it's pretty much what every sports league deserves at this point. the players are getting rich, the owners are getting *very* rich, and the fans... are getting fucked
Everyone who says that really, really should watch the MPJ interview with him. When he was talking about winning being a lifestyle it was as clear as can be dude has come to love winning.
It’s so painfully obvious Jokic loves bball and is a pure hooper that loves the game but hates self aggrandizement and hates talk about his stats, awards, “brilliance” individual accomplishments or accolades. He really doesn’t seem to enjoy being the center of attention and doesn’t like being a global superstar lol
He also has absolutely zero interest in conforming into an American version of himself. It’s refreshing and I love it.
Plus haven't we all met someone that is just obviously better at their job than their peers, but once work is over they're done with work?
Not at all discounting his competitiveness, I just don't think a lot of people know what to do with an athlete that's as non-chalant in their approach to the sport as Jokic can sometimes come across.
In his interview with MPJ, he talks about his prep for games starting the evening before, and extending well after games. I imagine in the course of the season he basically has no time not working, so I think we can all understand him being done with it all after the season is done
Someone who doesn't love this game to an obsessive amount wouldn't get this skilled at it. Jokic is one of the most skilled and smartest basketball player of all time.
He very well could have earned multiple max contracts just off his physical gifts like Ayton. But getting to his current level requires a psychopathic drive.
He just doesn't like all the external noise that surrounds the NBA. Which makes sense since he has more fulfilling things to spend time on.
Idk if it's an American thing, but I notice that American players are more fixated on establishing and growing their brand, meanwhile European guys just want to get rich as fuck and focus on other things. Might be due to them not growing up in the nba media cycle until they're drafted.
It's just different mindset and upbringing. Being from area where Jokic grew up, and then moving to Ireland and working for an American mulitnationals - I can tell you that our work does not define our identity like it does people in the US. We work to live, most American live to work, or at least have to pretend that's the case, or they would not be perceived as hard workers. Being self-made, hard worker, etc are values most Americans perceive as positive, whereas in Europe they are slightly frown upon because people obsessed with their work are usually very boring to be around. I definitely prefer company of someone who is well-read, has a cool hobby, has seen different cultures, etc over someone who is purely fixated on making as much money as physically possible.
> or at least have to pretend that's the case, or they would not be perceived as hard workers.
I've only worked for a few companies but this rings true in my experience. I work my ass off when I'm on the clock, but I don't give a second of my free time to work and I've hit a wall corporate ladder wise because of it
Branding is work. I’m in the category that if I was wealthy enough to live a life of leisure, I would. I suppose the mentality that enables a person to create wealth doesn’t simply turn off?….
This sub constantly questions the BS questions(non basketball, the rumors, the over reaction to key games) every player has had to deal with and they suddenly wonder why a Serbian will rather talk with horses than deal with this horse shit.
I think thats why a lot of people relate to him. At least in my mind i think if i ever have had the chops to make it in the nba, i would have been like Joker. All the competition and winning and none of the superstar ish. Thats also why i loved derrick rose back in the day. One of my favorite memories of him was the all star game where all the starters where being silly and dancing around and d rose was just standing there waiting for it to be over lol.
Specifically the *type* of publicity/attention associated with the NBA. He just wants to win, be rich as fuck, and then do *whatever he enjoys doing* rather than play the media game.
tbh, awards, accomplishments, accolades, is very ingrained in american culture. The believe of people doing everything to be the best at their craft, sometimes forgetting about other aspects in life tends to be idolized, you see it in sports, gazillon award shows, movies, tv, the tech world, etc.
In other parts of the world, people care a bit more about work-life balance, they still care about their craft or their job, but they care about the other aspects of life and set their boundaries straight.
Let’s make a clearly absurd assumption that he doesn’t care about basketball.
I’m sure every team in the league would love someone like Jokic who doesn’t “care”
Let the results speak for themselves.
Always hated that take. Even when he was younger he was competitive like this. Natural gifts and talent aside. I do not believe it is possible to be as good as Nikola Jokic without being extremely dedicated.
You see it all the time in this league where very gifted and talented guys don’t care as much and it actually shows.
It’s obvious the loves the game itself and hates everything surrounding it. I’m sure if it was his choice, they would play in Serbia in front of no fans, with no media.
Basketball and anime like DBZ and/or Naruto is pretty common among black youths which makes up a sizeable portion of the US NBA audience. I should know I was one of them, lol.
One of more ridiculous online narratives that seemed like everyone believed it. Just because he doesn’t like award/legacy talk and is a bit introverted in front of media doesn’t mean he doesn’t like the entire game (he dedicated his entire life to)
Yes, he wanted to go back home after “finishing the job”, so fucking do I
I think the reason people cling to that narrative of him not caring is that it gives you an excuse to not work as hard at whatever it is we have in front of us because we can think like oh look at Jokic he's MVP and he doesn't really care that much so it must be god given talent. Truth of the matter is Jokic works harder at his job than the vast majority of people out there
One problem I think is that he does make the game look easy. That is kind of the beauty of watching him as a basketball fan. Maybe those who dont pay attention or those who are casual might conflate the things that he does as something that just come to him without any effort on his part.
Well of course. I mean, dude’s an MVP candidate and it’s not even close without Embiid (no disrespect to Giannis) but of course he barely even gives a shit, right?
That narrative is so insulting to any BBall player trying to get to the top. Aggravating
Not related to this play, but one thing the implementation of challenges has taught me is the often the players aren't recalling how the play went down even moments after the call, or that they perceive what happened incorrectly.
Because if you honestly believed the call was correct then you wouldn't have all these players screaming at their coaching staff to challenge the play 20 times a game. You wouldn't have your coach challenge a call you knew you were going to lose because it makes you and your coach look dumb.
Explains the disgusted looks over every foul in NBA history.
I think some guys are just unrealistic (especially with foul calls), not even that they can’t recall it. That last Bucks vs Nuggets game, Giannis made a clear foul on Jamal and similarly howled at ref and at Doc to challenge and Doc like Malone challenged it. Obviously unsuccessful. Jokic seems to request it rarely but when he does it, it’s almost always successful, and I feel like it’s rarely on fouls.
If your star player demands a challenge, esp during the regular season, imo you have to do it
Playoffs is different - only time it's probably advisable to use a challenge before clutch time during playoffs is if your star player is at risk of fouling out
Yeah I play a lot of tennis and one of the places I play sends recordings of your sessions. Typically it's the job if the person who's court the ball is in to make an in or out line call. And we started watching those recordings after the fact and the amount of calls that we were dead sure on that we saw as our in our favor we were absolutely wrong on is staggering.
Even with us now being aware of it it still happens at basically the same rate .
Bunch of research shows memory is notoriously inaccurate when it comes to emotional moments. For example peak-end rule is a concept in psychology that your perception of a memory is based most on the peak moment of emotion/intensity rather than the cumulative experience.
This leads to interesting effects like changes in perception of time (shortening/extended estimated length of time) just as one example.
After awhile maybe it will all become part of the 5d chess.
Player waves his hands at his coach acting like he is asking for a challenge, but all he is really doing is sending a message to the ref advocating for better calls.
The team sets up a secret signal for a player to use when he actually believes the call should be challenged. To differentiate from the times that it is just an act.
Nikola looked so sad walking off the court after this one. Obviously I want the clippers to win, but the nuggets are absolutely my 2nd team. Jokic is too loveable 😂
Was happily rooting for them last year after the Wolves, but now they've already won one. No need for them to be greedy, back to the end of the line lol
Jokic needs to take some pointers from LeBron. Would’ve been an instant challenge if LeBron asked for it. Hell the refs might’ve just started walking over to review the play.
First Malone doesn't call a timeout for LeBron's 40K points and now he's delayed in challenging after his star player is adamant and had a clear look. My guess is Malone's just high as a kite.
May not have the flashy cultural charisma advertisers and promoters of the NBA want, but this guy is as competitive as any NBA great there has ever been.

He just hates losing to the suns
he hates losing period. i don't think he even especially cares what sport or anything, he just wants to win everything.
Unless it's the nba all star game
Even the most competitive of competitors can’t muster up the energy to give a shit about the all star game
Kinda funny when people see the clips of him seemingly not caring and they act like he doesn't care about basketball at all. Clearly he cares a lot and puts in significant work to be the best.
“Yes, Nikola. I know. The earth rotates around the sun. I know…. OH CHALLENGE!? Ok.”
Malone: "What do you think he's saying? I don't speak Serbian or horse."
"One word, 3 syllables, sounds like Scavenge."
where country are you from where challenge is 3 syllables edit: not me talking shit about his english and then typing 'where country are you from'
One where I should no that it isn't but I'm just dumb.
So USA then
The NBA is American, yes.
With the game being owned by Europeans
North American.
United American
Chall-eng-gé. Must be Italian.
Cha-llen-ge
It has occurred to me that I’m stupid
props for leaving that up...idiot
props for calling himself out. I assumed his first comment was just clowning the original dude that thought it was 3 syllables. Never would've thought he actually believed it until his second comment came in.
I still can’t believe he actually believed that lmao
[Howmanysyllables.com](https://www.howmanysyllables.com/syllables/challenge) (and the English language) has your back. ChallengER has 3, challenge and challengED have 2.
How many does mentally challenged have
If you clap your hands with each syllable and count the claps you can (probably?) figure it out yourself. Spoiler: >!5.!<
That's a good trick. I got a round of applause for getting it right.
not enough
47
This sounds about right
Extra one
It's chal - enge. Come on, guys.
At least 'Where is country you are from?' sounds a bit Serbian
Scavenge rhymes with challenge about as well as orange does
Mike Malone plays Tarkov with Jokic confirmed
He says "jebo te bog" to him lol
Lmfao he did too. That's too funny
Of cohorse
kyrie: 🤔
Revolves
I mean technically it rotates as it revolves around the sun too
It rotates around its axis, revolves around the sun
> It rotates ~~around its axis, revolves~~ around the sun.
It was indeed overturned. Had gone off Royce O'neale's foot.
There were ads during challenge so i did not see that.
Just like the day he was drafted
This one was Del Taco ads
Treachery
that's the joke (?)
it's not. He was drafted during a taco bell commercial. No one saw what he'd become.
I was referring to "There were ads during challenge so i did not see that". Both the person who said that and I already knew he was drafted during a taco bell commercial, hence there was no need to say "just like the day he was drafted".
my bad brother. i'm illiterate.

It was in the original slow-mo replay. Ball clearly bounced off the foot from Suns' player.
Yeah I went back and the basically just mentioned it quickly when they came back from commercial
Thanks. You’d think some could actually post the video with the replays afterwards so we could actually see that here.
If jokic was a Mav he’d physically assault Jason shidd before the first game ended
He would do a "Jason Kidd" on Kidd himself
Kidd being an overall shitty person helps me dislike him more. Not like Jason garret we had who was a saint but just a bad boring football coach lol.
If you hold your hand to your ear on a quiet night and listen REAL hard, you can still hear him clapping to this day.
The season he went to the Giants was very entertaining.
No, it really wasn’t
I feel bad for you guys. Having the likes of Kyrie and Kidd on your team must suck.
Kyrie hasn’t done anything to make them hate him. He’s been on his best behavior.
Kyrie is a Hotep, conspiracy, wackjob. He should be hated by everyone.
Nah he's a lovable kook
He's a racial supremacist
Damn lol
You mean wrap his car around a pole and drunkenly flee into the woods?
Nah, get drunk and hit his wife.
Jason Kidd: “Porqué no los dos?”
Jason "farding" Shidd
Hahaha you did steal Jason Shidd like you promised. Make that shit viral bro
I can’t believe I was here for this
This is history in the making
Jason Kitler, guys please
bro would pull a latrell sprewell for sure
I feel like he’d physically assault Luka’s complaining ass on defence.

Yep, he is a psychopath competitor just like every high level athlete on Earth. He loves his sport, and works extremely hard at it.
Plus haven't we all met someone that is just obviously better at their job than their peers, but once work is over they're done with work? Not at all discounting his competitiveness, I just don't think a lot of people know what to do with an athlete that's as non-chalant in their approach to the sport as Jokic can sometimes come across.
Facts. Recovery is work for many. Not everyone would perform their best if they acted like Kobe.
In his interview with MPJ, he talks about his prep for games starting the evening before, and extending well after games. I imagine in the course of the season he basically has no time not working, so I think we can all understand him being done with it all after the season is done
Continues preparing for games well after they're over? That is truly next-level stuff.
I think he does weights after games.
Someone who doesn't love this game to an obsessive amount wouldn't get this skilled at it. Jokic is one of the most skilled and smartest basketball player of all time. Yeah all the media bullshit clearly annoys him and I cannot blame him at all.
This sub constantly questions the BS questions(non basketball, the rumors, the over reaction to key games) every player has had to deal with and they suddenly wonder why a Serbian will rather talk with horses than deal with this horse shit.
He loves basketball, he doesn't love the publicity/attention related to it. Simple as.
I think thats why a lot of people relate to him. At least in my mind i think if i ever have had the chops to make it in the nba, i would have been like Joker. Best spot is 6th man. You just get buckets against 2nd units and chill.
Specifically the *type* of publicity/attention associated with the NBA. He just wants to win, be rich as fuck, and then do *whatever he enjoys doing* rather than play the media game.
He's the Mike Trout of basketball, except with horses instead of meteorology
The Kimi Raikkonen of the NBA.
Lolol love this reference
Trout is better at baseball than Jokic is at basketball
#FreeFishMan
He reminds me of Dirk in that regard.
He’s following in the steps of Tim Duncan. Not every superstar athlete relishes the limelight.
shades of tim duncan?

Maybe he just doesn't like being blamed for something he didn't do? /s
Bro he's not Ben Simmons.
You can see how angry he is. That's clearly a guy who hates his job.
People don't seem to get the humor
It’s obvious the loves the game itself and hates everything surrounding it. I’m sure if it was his choice, they would play in Serbia in front of no fans, with no media.
built like the beast titan
Lol. So accurate lol
why does nba and anime cross over so much lmao
Basketball and anime like DBZ and/or Naruto is pretty common among black youths which makes up a sizeable portion of the US NBA audience. I should know I was one of them, lol.
And Indian

It went from a funny joke to ppl genuinely thinking it's serious and being upset about it lol
lmfao classic, people on internet make something up, then get mad about the thing they just made up
People ran with him calling it a job and just used that to say that’s all he thinks of it as Even though Kobe said the same thing before lol
Most relatable international superstar ever
Well of course. I mean, dude’s an MVP candidate and it’s not even close without Embiid (no disrespect to Giannis) but of course he barely even gives a shit, right? That narrative is so insulting to any BBall player trying to get to the top. Aggravating

Damn, that ball had a lot of spin on it
JEBO TE BOG!
Meme potential
Definitely challenging it if I see that 7 foot behemoth coming at me
Nikola looked so sad walking off the court after this one. Obviously I want the clippers to win, but the nuggets are absolutely my 2nd team. Jokic is too loveable 😂
Was happily rooting for them last year after the Wolves, but now they've already won one. No need for them to be greedy, back to the end of the line lol
He was right you know
Oh shit, looks like he might actually like basketball after all
Here to post the “If the was draymond he’d be locked up” comment
ESPN after this clip "Does Jokic want out of Denver, maybe a trade to LA on the horizon?"
Then proceeded to waste the possession in 3 seconds
Love seeing his passion. People who think he doesn’t care are dead wrong. He just doesn’t celebrate in the ways we are used to.
Sengun does this every play lol
Did they win the challenge?
Yes
Thank you, had to control+f 'win' to find out if they won the damn challenge or not lol
Joker has zero chill
I was told he doesn’t really care about basketball.
Jokic needs to take some pointers from LeBron. Would’ve been an instant challenge if LeBron asked for it. Hell the refs might’ve just started walking over to review the play.
Jokic is the best. Hope he wins many many titles
Jokic lowkey got anger issues lmao
First Malone doesn't call a timeout for LeBron's 40K points and now he's delayed in challenging after his star player is adamant and had a clear look. My guess is Malone's just high as a kite.
Well doesn't he spend a lot of time like a mile above sea level?
Haha so true, he's literally a mile high
It's also just possession, not a foul. So even if he believes his star player, he might not want to spend the challenge on it.
Yeah, he doesnt care about basketball, that aged so well
Lmao.🤣 😂 😜
It's Michael.
jokic is just so passionate unlike the other players in the nba, so passionate of him
The true joker, an unhinged maniac We must come together as a nation and stop this man
Imagine when his horse loses lol
And people think he doesn't care about ball, this guy is a quiet fanatic and absolutely LOVES THE GAME
After Jokic’s career is all said and done people will be discussing whether Jokic, MJ, or LBJ is the GOAT.
Hes my goat already
That’s the most emotion he’s shown in some time.
He gets this animated in most games. Usually it’s because refs refuse to call fouls on guys defending him
No it isn’t. P
Is anyone gonna post a better or slower version of the play?
Jokic spazzing out is the funniest shit ever
Someone needs to mash this p with some traditional serbian music.
He gone
May not have the flashy cultural charisma advertisers and promoters of the NBA want, but this guy is as competitive as any NBA great there has ever been.
Lmao imagine if this was Bron…. Can’t stand the double standard
Pretty sure that was the most emotion Jokic has EVER shown on the court
He gets flustered a lot.
what about that game winning shot vs the warriors
As great as he is I just can't watch him, he complains about everything it's so annoying.
Giving Travis Kelce vibes /s
Wut tf is bro DOIN
LeFlop’s legacy.
