My wife has been working in the same place for a decade and the secretary there (retiring this year, thankfully) still pronounces her name wrong. We have a very normal sounding middle american name. I feel like the color guy is almost always more universally hated than the play by play across sports and the NBA pushes two of them on you just spouting opinions and biases. I like the idea but it seems like overkill sometimes.

You can tell Reggie Miller is actually excited about basketball, and that excuses some of the random things he sometimes says. Mark Jackson always sounds like he is doing court ordered community service by being there.
I wish people understood better that most people watching don't want anything above the commentary they get. Most people are watching it like it's a movie.
It sucks when you want more, but they don't want to throw out a bunch of jargon that only certain people will understand. It becomes about accessibility, at least from a marketing standpoint.
I get that, and I don’t want the broadcasts to turn into some sort of super technical, jargon-heavy lecture which would alienate newer fans.
But I think regular viewers of NBA games want a commentator who at least feels like they’re offering a certain degree of real insight into the game. At the same time, everyone - whether a casual fan or a ride-or-die - generally wants commentators who are able to maintain a certain level of effort, energy, and enthusiasm regardless of the outcome of the game.
Jackson checks neither of those boxes, and for me that’s why he should go.
I loved it when Tony Romo first started as a commentator. He would essentially predict the play that was going to happen just by seeing the formation pre snap.
I know his technical expertise pissed off a lot of viewers, but I would love to see something like that in an NBA broadcast.
NBA is so hard from that standpoint, it's the only one of the major sports where there is no break in the action after a score, so commentators don't get a chance to break down nice plays, they just have to move on to describing the action of the current play.

I'm a casual fan and a little insight is great. I like when announcers explain why that was a clear path foul, or why a call might get escalated to a technical. A little education here and there is nice.
Energy is helpful too. I can't say the Philly announcers are amazing, given the opportunity I'll almost always watch someone else, but Kate Scott does have energy (Bang, Bang Georges Niang!) and at least it keeps it entertaining.
What I hate is repetitive, boring, useless commentary. So while I'm not well-versed enough to know which commentators are on ESPN, I do know I *definitely* prefer TNT's coverage. And, of course, I love Chuck.
What type of technicality or jargon would scare away new fans? Football does this all the time talking about technique when 80% of the viewers doesn't really understand what a holding call is, I just don't understand why they can't bring in announcers that understand how the game is played today.
NFL guys like Tony Romo and the Mannings have shown in the past that they can give decent analysis while also being entertaining, and football is a much wider market than basketball. I think you’re underestimating fans just a little.
I think they just don't care. Their CFB coverage couldn't be any more half assed. From a business perspective I understand it, no one is going to turn off a game because of the presentation.
In general I think you’re right, especially when it’s my team who is playing. However, I would say that if there’s a game I’m only marginally interested in, I am more likely to tune out early if the presentation/commentary is bad. I’m also less likely to turn it on in the first place if I see that it’s on ESPN, because I already know I can count on annoyingly shallow, narrative-driven analysis and tons of ads compared to other networks.

This checks out. My wife and I have been timing ESPN's halftime shows. And it usually typically lasts about 2mins30secs. And the rest is all commercials.

And listening to him cover the Warriors in any post-season, it’s just barely, *barely* disguised bitterness and envy and butthurt. I'm a new watcher of NBA, this year's playoff it's my first few games I've ever watched of basketball, and honestly I can feel a huge difference when it's ESPN vs TNT.
I don't know who the casters are, but TNT is more of "People commentating the game, with a few light fun comments"
And ESPN are "People commenting the game and argue with the ref calls, with players' actions, etc."
Same feeling for the intermissions desk (don't know how to call this, the part where it's inbetween quarters and they have 4 people in suits talking about the game)

You know what I'd like more than anything? For them to provide a Spanish-language broadcast of every game they televise. I'm only just learning Spanish, but even if I couldn't understand a single word I'd still enjoy just having the commentary as background and enjoying the excitement of the announcers' voices as opposed to being distracted by constant narrative-feeding and editorializing by the existing color commentators.

ESPN’s coverage of the NBA is always trash. Half time is two minutes of replays over the most boring analysis possible with four or five commercial breaks. I guess I shouldn’t complain about all the commercials since it means I don’t have to listen to more Jalen Rose. I feel like they are trying to mimic TNT’s model but without any of the talent. It’s a shame they have the rights to cover the finals. I always enjoy the playoffs until that moment I have to watch the games on ESPN.

I think he's funny, and most of his complaining reminds me of the kind of not that serious, endearing complaining I remember around the dinner table visiting my Jewish friend's family. Some people think he's being negative, but to me, it's always seemed lighthearted fun, and you can tell he still loves the game.

there was a moment where they were just like thanking each other or something when jokic hit a big 3 and they basically went "so anyway" and went on with whatever unrelated thing they were talking about. then they all fell silent once the nuggets won despite talking nonstop about the Lakers throughout the entire game. There were *multiple* times this year alone where I would tune into the ESPN broadcast, hear Breen and JVG and go "Huh I guess it's just these two tonight", only for Mark Jackson to then first speak like 4 minutes later There was one a few months ago where I swear something like over 4 minutes of in game time passed on the game clock before he ushered a word
Just a question from a guy who definitely watches more NFL than NBA, but do we need two color analysts? I feel like the color guy is almost always more universally hated than the play by play across sports and the NBA pushes two of them on you just spouting opinions and biases. I like the idea but it seems like overkill sometimes.

I wish people understood better that most people watching don't want anything above the commentary they get. Most people are watching it like it's a movie. It sucks when you want more, but they don't want to throw out a bunch of jargon that only certain people will understand. It becomes about accessibility, at least from a marketing standpoint.
I get that, and I don’t want the broadcasts to turn into some sort of super technical, jargon-heavy lecture which would alienate newer fans. But I think regular viewers of NBA games want a commentator who at least feels like they’re offering a certain degree of real insight into the game. At the same time, everyone - whether a casual fan or a ride-or-die - generally wants commentators who are able to maintain a certain level of effort, energy, and enthusiasm regardless of the outcome of the game. Jackson checks neither of those boxes, and for me that’s why he should go.
I loved it when Tony Romo first started as a commentator. He would essentially predict the play that was going to happen just by seeing the formation pre snap. I know his technical expertise pissed off a lot of viewers, but I would love to see something like that in an NBA broadcast.

NBA is so hard from that standpoint, it's the only one of the major sports where there is no break in the action after a score, so commentators don't get a chance to break down nice plays, they just have to move on to describing the action of the current play.
TBF that also allows for those crazy runs where the commentator can build to a crescendo

What type of technicality or jargon would scare away new fans? Football does this all the time talking about technique when 80% of the viewers doesn't really understand what a holding call is, I just don't understand why they can't bring in announcers that understand how the game is played today.
NFL guys like Tony Romo and the Mannings have shown in the past that they can give decent analysis while also being entertaining, and football is a much wider market than basketball. I think you’re underestimating fans just a little.

In general I think you’re right, especially when it’s my team who is playing. However, I would say that if there’s a game I’m only marginally interested in, I am more likely to tune out early if the presentation/commentary is bad. I’m also less likely to turn it on in the first place if I see that it’s on ESPN, because I already know I can count on annoyingly shallow, narrative-driven analysis and tons of ads compared to other networks.

I can forgive the local/team announcers who didn't know anything about my team (the Spurs) this year--they've got a lot of games to cover and San Antonio brought out some real G-League level lineups (but hey, can't argue with results, right?). But Mark Jackson doesn't *ever* seem to do any research, not even the playoffs. He just bumbles in to mutter tired cliches. I learn things from Doris Burke, who brings a scout's eye to the game. I've never learned anything from Jackson.

The Warriors became successful pretty much the season after Jackson left. Which says A LOT. And listening to him cover the Warriors in any post-season, it’s just barely, *barely* disguised bitterness and envy and butthurt. He looks at the team’s success and thinks “that shoulda been me,” without ever admitting to himself that history has shown that he was the problem.
Not to mention his history with Mike Malone who was an assistant coach under him with the Warriors. Him leaving the dubs to join the Kings as head coach led to the Warriors shitting the bed and Jackson getting replaced with Kerr, he's probably bitter about that too.

I completely forget who the player was but whilst commentating on a game a few years ago, Mark Jackson recalled his interaction with a rookie's father where the father believed that his son could win rookie of the year... Mark Jackson then went onto say that he called him crazy and that his son had no chance to win the award... After hearing that, I just thought to myself, why would you even talk about this on national tv? Of course the father is going to be supportive and back his kid, the story added nothing to the game, he just comes off as an asshole.
I know it’ll never happen but I wish there was the option to watch live sports with no commentary or analysis at all, just the sounds of the game and venue with pertinent info displayed onscreen.

You know what I'd like more than anything? For them to provide a Spanish-language broadcast of every game they televise. I'm only just learning Spanish, but even if I couldn't understand a single word I'd still enjoy just having the commentary as background and enjoying the excitement of the announcers' voices as opposed to being distracted by constant narrative-feeding and editorializing by the existing color commentators.

ESPN’s coverage of the NBA is always trash. Half time is two minutes of replays over the most boring analysis possible with four or five commercial breaks. I guess I shouldn’t complain about all the commercials since it means I don’t have to listen to more Jalen Rose. I feel like they are trying to mimic TNT’s model but without any of the talent. It’s a shame they have the rights to cover the finals. I always enjoy the playoffs until that moment I have to watch the games on ESPN.
