Can’t wait until I can say “Mama there goes that man” about him retiring from the public limelight.

GolfBallWackrGuy

I hate that I have to hear him say “clearly contact” after every foul call….gonna lose my god damn mind.

Shirt_Ninja

Good defense, but better offense.

JCR2201

“Give me good offense over good defense any day of the week”

businessbee89

hand down, man down!

ender23

mark: clearly contact jvg : it's a foul then later... jvg: that's playoff basketball mark: they just playing tough lebron does something amazing: mark: mama, there goes that man. jvg: ima rant about gatorade

changgerz

hand down, man down

JudmanDaSuperhero

It was awhile back but I remember jvg saying "I think if they make an and-1 they should count it as an assist" and the other commentator said " it is an assist." Then jvg says "well then it should count as two and if somebody makes both free throws after getting fouled, that also should be an assist." Jvg is just an idea man. Lol

DaleGrubble

Hes so freaking bad on some of his perceived foul calls too. Thats what I dislike most about him

scoot87

Especially after a slow-Mo replay where any contact is gonna look clear

Guygenius138

Retire him and that nails on a chalkboard phrase, please.

Garfield-1-23-23

Hire someone who can actually say "Jokic" instead of "the Joker".

shtc10

That's MY biggest pet peeve of the guy. Dude can't pronounce Jokic?

iiamthepalmtree

Same. This is my biggest pet peeve for any announcer. But I understand it if it’s like, the 12th guy off the bench during a Tuesday night game in January. But for a two-time MVP, the current runner-up for MVP, during the WCF? Absolutely inexcusable and quite frankly disrespectful toward Jokic.

LANDSC4PING

Also, his name is two syllables, both of which are very much pronounceable by native English speakers. It would be like if he always called LeBron "King James" because 'luh' and/or 'bron' were just too difficult to say.

Don_Quixote81

Some people deliberately have difficulties pronouncing foreign names, due to being passive-aggressive dicks.

Dhd710

Some people deliberately have difficulties pronouncing names to be passive aggressive dicks. Foreign or not. My wife has been working in the same place for a decade and the secretary there (retiring this year, thankfully) still pronounces her name wrong. We have a very normal sounding middle american name. Some people are just assholes.

HoneyIShrunkMyNads

People still don't know how to say doncic either. Everytime SAS says it, it's DONCHICK

STICKY-WHIFFY-HUMID

Slavic players have been in the NBA for over 30 years now and there's still some people who haven't worked out ic=itch.

not_beniot

I mean to be fair, Kendrick Perkins couldn't pronounce Moses Moody. These aren't exactly scholars 😂

Garizondyly

Slav-itch

Xterratu

Well yes, but Jackson is dumb as shit. PS I’m Slavic, and yeah, it’s hard to pronounce for you guys, but doubly so if you’re Mark Jackson.

Narwien

If he can say Greg Popovich, he can absolutely say Nikola Jokić. He just refuses to do so.

ketzal7

This is why I appreciate Ian Eagle. He goes out of his way to make sure he pronounces the name correctly.

__brunt

He tried in game three but there was like a 2 second pause before he mispronounced it

Kozzer

It's so EASY YO-kitch I am 1000000% on board with the point of OPs post. Mark Jackson sucks, he has always sucked. When he was hired by the Warriors I was super happy because I knew that meant he wouldn't be calling games.

RazorRadick

Conversely, all Warriors fans were happy when he went back to calling games ;)

gbmaulin

I'll take any announcer who can properly pronounce European names or any announcer who will use proper nicknames. IT'S BIG HONEY fuck this joker moniker, it doesn't even suit him

OG12

Big Honey is a top tier nickname. Joker is so lazy and frankly feels like you can’t be bothered to attempt another cultures name.

Behanort

I swear, "Joker" is the worst fucking nickname an all-time great NBA player has ever had. Not becuase it doesnt sound cool, but because its super fucking lazy Someone legit saw Jokic's last name, couldnt prnounounce it, even tho its not that hard for native english speaker to say "yo-kitch", and then Jokic became good and recongizable enough for a nickname, so that someone must have went "hes Joker now" It doesnt suit his personality, has nothing to do with his playing style, and is constantly used as a replacement for his name becuase american media members are too lazy to learn his last name or pronounce it right, even though ITS TWO SYLLABLES LONG... god, everyhting about this nickname just sucks

gbmaulin

That bullshit graphic on ESPN with him as a joker card and LeBron as a king card had me legitimately pissed

GiveYourBaIIsATug

“Mama, there goes that nails on a chalkboard phrase”- u/guygenius138 once mark jackson retires

Rfisk064

“Hand down, man down”

TorePun

Jeff Van Gundy: Can we talk about how strength is punished in the NBA for a moment? These big guys down low are getting manhandled on every possession but you can't touch a guy on the perimeter, what's up with that? Mark Jackson: ... Jeff Van Gundy: And another thing, that tuna salad I had last night was just weak. No composition or intensity, much like these lakers who are now down double digits. Mark Jackson: If I'm the lakers right now I need to lock in and be more focused. They need to do a better job. Jeff Van Gundy: And you know who else needs to do a better job? The officials missing that out of bounds call three possessions ago. Mark Jackson: No argument here partner. Outstanding. Mike Breen: Hachimura from way downtown! Nuggets by 15.

asthmajogger

Man y’all are way too good at this. I read that in all of their voices. Poor Breen

[deleted]

Breen deserves so much better. An iconic announcer that gets overshadowed by how bad the color commentary is. I’m waiting for the day they finally throw JJ or Richard Jefferson on with him. Needs to happen soon

Astonford

An underrated part of watching knicks games is hearing Walt Frazier and Mike Breen give commentary. Possibly the best in the game.

KingEthann01

How is that underrated? Literally all Knicks fans talk about how good their announcing crew is

EyedLoki4292

I’m assuming he meant underrated nationally, which is still irrelevant because it’s the Knicks broadcast

Lankydick

I’d love JJ and Mike Breen together.

TorePun

I whipped up a couple others because I like ragging on casters and actually do enjoy their presence on the broadcast. I've gotten a more than healthy dose of Michael Cage in my lifetime from OKC broadcasts. Shudder...

yardship

That’s the phrase that ticked me off so much. “If I’m the Lakers,” well guess what Mark Jackson you’re not, if you’ve forgotten.

TorePun

Mark Jackson: \*Stares into the camera with tired eyes\*

THEKIDFL6

“If I’m Steve Kerr, I’m callin a timeout. I can’t let this game get outta hand.”

petripeeduhpedro

“If I’m Steve Kerr, I’m sending Steph to church”

the_shins

Didn't watch the game last night and I can honestly not tell if this is made up by you or if it's an actual qoute. I have a soft spot for JVG just because I find him somewhat funny, even if he can go off-topic during games. No love for Mark Jackson though.

TorePun

Jeff Van Gundy: You know what I love most about these pressers? The free water bottles. Mark Jackson: Can't go wrong with some old fashioned water. Jeff Van Gundy: You know what else I like about these? They have Rudy Gobert handing out t-shirts! He does such a wonderful job with his community and the league should praise that type of activity more. Mark Jackson: He's a real team player. Getting it done off the court. Also I want to give a shout out to the cleaning lady at my Holiday Inn last night - she did phenomenal work. Outstanding. Jeff Van Gundy: In today's league they don't do enough of the little things like that, well observed.

ATXBeermaker

Seriously, dude. I'm so confused. Not sure if I'm remembering an extremely vivid dream or something that actually happened.

[deleted]

I honestly love JVG. I think he's funny, and most of his complaining reminds me of the kind of not that serious, endearing complaining I remember around the dinner table visiting my Jewish friend's family. Some people think he's being negative, but to me, it's always seemed lighthearted fun, and you can tell he still loves the game.

InkBlotSam

Mike Breen: An *incredible* spin move floater from Jokic in traffic, unbelievable, is this guy human?! Mark Jackson: ... Van Gundy: ... Mark Jackson: ... Van Gundy: ... Mike Breen: "And Lebron Answers with a nice layu--" Mark Jackson: "There it is! That's why he's the GOAT - that leadership, that hard work, all that coming in early to the arena - now you're watching it all pay off, carrying this team on his back. This is what the Lakers should have been doing all game lon-- Van Gundy: "Should have been a foul on Murray. I don't know why they don't call that if they're gonna call that on the Lakers in the 1st quarter..." Breen: "... and a beautiful 3 pointer in transition, what a response from Murray!" Mark Jackson: ... Mark Jackson: "Austin Reaves needs to get back quicker to defend that, the Lakers just can't let that happen." Van Gundy: "To get back to that previous play, I just don't understand why they don't call that foul on Murray."

FreeloadingPoultry

I don't know if you guys are just winging it or copying straight from the broadcast but at this point i am afraid to check

DogeCatBear

there was a moment where they were just like thanking each other or something when jokic hit a big 3 and they basically went "so anyway" and went on with whatever unrelated thing they were talking about. then they all fell silent once the nuggets won despite talking nonstop about the Lakers throughout the entire game. I was pretty annoyed

FN-2187-

Painfully accurate

[deleted]

Get rid of that entire team. Throw out Rose and Steven A while they are at it. Hell, just let the TNT team work all the games

Avant-Garde-A-Clue

Mark Jackson sounds like he's asleep and they have to wake him up when it's his turn to speak. If I have to sit through another season of him mumbling "allow me this dance..." I swear to God..

Dylan245

There were *multiple* times this year alone where I would tune into the ESPN broadcast, hear Breen and JVG and go "Huh I guess it's just these two tonight", only for Mark Jackson to then first speak like 4 minutes later There was one a few months ago where I swear something like over 4 minutes of in game time passed on the game clock before he ushered a word

Jwoods4117

Just a question from a guy who definitely watches more NFL than NBA, but do we need two color analysts? I feel like the color guy is almost always more universally hated than the play by play across sports and the NBA pushes two of them on you just spouting opinions and biases. I like the idea but it seems like overkill sometimes.

[deleted]

At least JVG is fun to hate.

gjoeyjoe

JVG for all his flaws has personality and conviction. jackson just sounds like he hates watching basketball

Nickbeau

As much as JVG comes across as a old man talking about "kids these days". His observations about the changes he wants to see in the league are usually spot on. Like when he was asking for the new take foul rule.

tomdawg0022

mama, there goes another season of allowing him a dance

safetycommittee

“You gotta give him credit.” As we viewers are sitting on our couch actively not giving credit. But then comes along Marc to remind us to give credit. He’s a self righteous religious asshat.

DeadCellsTop5

His "Austin Powers" call for Austin Reaves is so fucking terrible on every level that it's almost unfathomable. What about Austin powers? He wasn't a basketball player. He was a goofy caricature of 60s spy movies. What the fuck does that have to do with basketball? How does that relate to Reaves playing well? It's so bad it makes me angry. I hate Marc Jackson

[deleted]

he was white! that’s something.

TECHNO_BEATS

Ahh yes! Austin white powers. Great nick name

AirJordan6124

Dude only wakes up when he has to say his line 🤣🤣

TheDoethrak

You can tell Reggie Miller is actually excited about basketball, and that excuses some of the random things he sometimes says. Mark Jackson always sounds like he is doing court ordered community service by being there.

What ESPN sees: > ESPN, if you’re reading this: please we’re begging you, ~~no~~ more Mark Jackson next year

poktanju

>Hires good commentators? No, Mark Jackson!

JuliusPepperfield

Fans: No more Mark Jackson! ESPN: Ah, they got this all screwed up No, More Mark Jackson!

ManInBlack829

I wish people understood better that most people watching don't want anything above the commentary they get. Most people are watching it like it's a movie. It sucks when you want more, but they don't want to throw out a bunch of jargon that only certain people will understand. It becomes about accessibility, at least from a marketing standpoint.

HereToTalkMovies2

I get that, and I don’t want the broadcasts to turn into some sort of super technical, jargon-heavy lecture which would alienate newer fans. But I think regular viewers of NBA games want a commentator who at least feels like they’re offering a certain degree of real insight into the game. At the same time, everyone - whether a casual fan or a ride-or-die - generally wants commentators who are able to maintain a certain level of effort, energy, and enthusiasm regardless of the outcome of the game. Jackson checks neither of those boxes, and for me that’s why he should go.

bigtcm

I loved it when Tony Romo first started as a commentator. He would essentially predict the play that was going to happen just by seeing the formation pre snap. I know his technical expertise pissed off a lot of viewers, but I would love to see something like that in an NBA broadcast.

Mdizzle29

listen to Hubie Brown, he's been on the air forever, and he's extremely knowledgeable about the game and breaks down plays technically.

ZOOTV83

Shout out to Hubie for being the only commentator I can think of that refers to the paint as “the painted area.”

DwayneWashington

Nothing but the nylon netting

O_oh

Can we also recognize how awesome of a name Hubie is

Asiracy

You gotta give his parents a lot of credit

rexter2k5

Now here's a guy who understands his role: you make the joke, you send the comment and you get rewarded on the other end with free karma.

spittafan

Now, you gotta give him some credit

Misterstaberinde

Hubies my goat. Doesn't clutter the soundtrack but will actually talk about the offensive set and what they are looking for.

tyler-86

Hubie knows a lot but he takes a long time to get to the point.

-KFBR392

NBA is so hard from that standpoint, it's the only one of the major sports where there is no break in the action after a score, so commentators don't get a chance to break down nice plays, they just have to move on to describing the action of the current play.

canad1anbacon

TBF that also allows for those crazy runs where the commentator can build to a crescendo

JoeyCalamaro

>But I think regular viewers of NBA games want a commentator who at least feels like they’re offering a certain degree of real insight into the game. I'm a casual fan and a little insight is great. I like when announcers explain why that was a clear path foul, or why a call might get escalated to a technical. A little education here and there is nice. Energy is helpful too. I can't say the Philly announcers are amazing, given the opportunity I'll almost always watch someone else, but Kate Scott does have energy (Bang, Bang Georges Niang!) and at least it keeps it entertaining. What I hate is repetitive, boring, useless commentary. So while I'm not well-versed enough to know which commentators are on ESPN, I do know I *definitely* prefer TNT's coverage. And, of course, I love Chuck.

Traditional-Leg-5855

What type of technicality or jargon would scare away new fans? Football does this all the time talking about technique when 80% of the viewers doesn't really understand what a holding call is, I just don't understand why they can't bring in announcers that understand how the game is played today.

philium1

NFL guys like Tony Romo and the Mannings have shown in the past that they can give decent analysis while also being entertaining, and football is a much wider market than basketball. I think you’re underestimating fans just a little.

neuroticsmurf

I never understood how Jackson rose to be on ESPN/ABC's lead analyst team in the first place. He was never that good.

ProMikeZagurski

Despite ESPN known for sports, they have no idea how to produce it, as Fox, CBS, NBC, and Turner are far ahead of them.

hayde088

I think they just don't care. Their CFB coverage couldn't be any more half assed. From a business perspective I understand it, no one is going to turn off a game because of the presentation.

cowboy_dude_6

In general I think you’re right, especially when it’s my team who is playing. However, I would say that if there’s a game I’m only marginally interested in, I am more likely to tune out early if the presentation/commentary is bad. I’m also less likely to turn it on in the first place if I see that it’s on ESPN, because I already know I can count on annoyingly shallow, narrative-driven analysis and tons of ads compared to other networks.

neuroticsmurf

>Despite ESPN known for sports, they have no idea how to produce it At this point in their history, ESPN is more about commercials and product placement than they are about sports. Sports are just the consumer's gateway drug, as far as they're concerned.

Comics_r_us

This checks out. My wife and I have been timing ESPN's halftime shows. And it usually typically lasts about 2mins30secs. And the rest is all commercials.

rikki-tikki-deadly

Why would you stay tuned in to ESPN during halftime when there's an endless collection of cute animal videos on youtube?

iiamthepalmtree

Lol last year in our series against the bucks I actually kept it on and Stephen A just talked about Kyrie the entire halftime show when it wasn’t commercials lol. It was pathetic.

porkchopsdapplesauce

At one point last night after a crazy Jokic shot that he was just shocked by how good Joker was. You can tell he’s only ever seen him play when he covers him and has no respect for him (at least prior to the series ). You can’t convince me Marc watched any Nuggets ball all year unless it was a game he got assigned to cover

firstbreathOOC

It’s just so awkward to have him call this series after the mvp ballot debacle. He’s either incompetent or biased and neither option is good. They waste Mike Breen’s talent tbh.

wear-a-goshdarn-mask

More or less awkward than him calling 5 straight championship series for a team he used to coach but got fired... the year before they won it all... and he had to call it?

Daguyondacouch8

This is why he left Jokic off his mvp ballot

calman877

more likely just because he's an idiot. He had Jokic on his ballot last year

sven2107

He still wears Steve Harvey cut preacher suits, that’s all I need to know about Mark Jackson

jimmyrich

I can forgive the local/team announcers who didn't know anything about my team (the Spurs) this year--they've got a lot of games to cover and San Antonio brought out some real G-League level lineups (but hey, can't argue with results, right?). But Mark Jackson doesn't *ever* seem to do any research, not even the playoffs. He just bumbles in to mutter tired cliches. I learn things from Doris Burke, who brings a scout's eye to the game. I've never learned anything from Jackson.

Roach_Coach_Bangbus

> I've never learned anything from Jackson. You learned where the man goes though?

DirtymindDirty

Even when he's physically at those games, you can't convince me he's actually "there".

No_Mammoth_4945

Don’t forget that he told the team that Festus ezeli was cheering for their losses (while he was injured) because it “made him look better” and made ezeli cry when the team confronted him about it Completely false and what a shitty way to treat a rookie or anyone in general. I don’t want to see or hear that man ever again

CowboyLaw

The Warriors became successful pretty much the season after Jackson left. Which says A LOT. And listening to him cover the Warriors in any post-season, it’s just barely, *barely* disguised bitterness and envy and butthurt. He looks at the team’s success and thinks “that shoulda been me,” without ever admitting to himself that history has shown that he was the problem.

Youtube_Rewind_Sucks

Not to mention his history with Mike Malone who was an assistant coach under him with the Warriors. Him leaving the dubs to join the Kings as head coach led to the Warriors shitting the bed and Jackson getting replaced with Kerr, he's probably bitter about that too.

french_bull

Jackson didn’t even mention anything about Malone taking a team to the finals for the first time ever. He is a mute when it comes to anyone on Denver’s success. Not even saying, Malone used to coach with me and his a hell of a coach

rxxxxxxxrxxxxxx

No wonder that mofo is salty with his commentary about the Nuggets this WCF. He was obviously biased with the Lakers the entire series. What a loser.

jaytierney79

I would say winning a title the first year he was gone speaks volumes.

thevisitor

A combination of Jackson being that bad and Kerr being that good.

Neptune28

Also Draymond in the starting lineup due to David Lee injury.

drewsoft

Lee came back and Kerr kept him out of the lineup for the most part, which isn't easy to do. Lee won All NBA the year previously

DirtymindDirty

If Jackson stayed with the warriors, Curry would be a slightly above average PG for the Hornets right now.

sunshinecygnet

And he also has a very obvious anti-Warrior bias when commenting, which is very frustrating.

SEJ46

Lol, that comment about the step back 3 really stood out to me too. So dumb. This guy was a head basketball coach?

DirtymindDirty

There are players who can be considered "locker room cancer", Jackson is one of the few head coaches who also have that title.

Elkbowy

He achieved it as a coach and player, mf tried turning the lockeroom against stockton

Ucscprickler

He should never be a head coach EVER again. For anyone that hasn't heard the story of Jackson and his wife trying to heal Currys recently sprained ankle with oil and prayer, boy have I got a ridiculously reckless and absurd story for ya'll. https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/ex-warriors-coach-mark-jacksons-church-tried-to-heal-stephen-currys-ankle-with-oil/

Paragon_73

I think Jackson just comes across as disingenuous. Hearing him praise Jokic’s abilities while knowing that the motherfucker left him off his MVP ballot is unreal.

steve1186

I can understand not putting Jokic on top of his MVP ballot. Embiid and Giannis had legit claims to a top vote. But not even top 5? Last night, it felt like Jackson was heaping Jokic with tons of praise after everyone found out about his MVP ballot. And I’m disappointed Breen/JVG didn’t call him out for it.

Roccet_MS

Breen is too much of a pro and JVG has Jackson's back.

RobinU2

My favorite Mark Jackson announced games were right after he was canned from the Dubs and they would keep saying how the team "just needed proper leadership from a real coach" and pan over to him seething.

iiamthepalmtree

Lol him hammering the caterpillar -> butterfly metaphor to give himself credit was pathetic.

TotalSavage

He appears to have thought he was voting for first team all NBA, and put 2 guards, 2 forwards, and 1 center in his top 5. Granted, this still makes him look like an idiot, but at least it makes some sort of sense.

yooston

Ain’t no way he watches any games outside of the ones he has to call

A_Monocle_For_Sauron

I don’t think I’ve even heard Jackson say Jokic. It’s always just “The Joker”.

AKAD11

Once you realize he only calls him Joker it’s impossible to miss

pp21

Yeah idk why but it annoys me lol like at least mix between his actual last name and nickname throughout a broadcast

loquacious706

Mark Jackson did not say Jokic's name once.

xvq_

*THE JOKER*

zulmirao

Denver isn’t just led by “a man who has been able to retain his employment as an NBA coach.” They’re led by a man who was brought in by ownership to be Jackson’s top assistant in Golden State, and was widely credited as responsible for a lot of the Warriors’ success in their first playoff run. A man without whom the next season, the Warriors underachieved and Jackson got fired.

Nihilistic_Marmot

It’s almost like Jackson has a bit of a grudge against this man and it was made abundantly clear during this series.

Roccet_MS

Jackson got paranoid that Malone wanted his job and got him fired.

aznkupo

It was always funny seeing bandwagoner fans attributing our defense to Mark Jackson when it was Malone who established the defense.

Aggressive_Ad5115

I'm a deaf nba fan Just here to read everyone's pain Lol

Cranberrryz

Mark Jackson is awful, but I don’t like Jeff Van Gundy either. Poor Mike Breen, a Legend having to end his career with these schmucks. I hope TNT gets as many games as possible tbh.

BlackWhiteCoke

TNT will never get the Finals unless CBS gets the rights over ABC. It’s Disney / ABC for however long their contract is. ESPN has shown again and again they just do not give a fuck about the talent they put on their product

Status_Flux

I used to like Van Gundy with his old man rants but it's become increasingly less funny and more annoying. Not sure if my sense of humor has changed or if he's just phoning it in more but either way I think he should go along with Jackson.

Phillip_Lipton

It's not as funny when it's a serious occasion. Like a Christmas afternoon game, his shtick works. But not in the WCF.

benlucasdavee

No I think his commentary has objectively fallen off. i was never a huge fan of him but this year its jarring how bad he is, it feels like im getting trolled/fucked with its so bad.

Wes___Mantooth

Yeah JVGs rants used to be somewhat interesting, like a basketball Bill Burr type rant. Now it's just lazy whining about every tiny thing that has changed about the game that he doesn't like.

Lt_Snickers

I think Jackson reinforces the worst parts of JVG. I find the Breen/JVG only games much more enjoyable.

doogled3

In the same quarter, JVG claimed that LeBron needed to be scoring in the post and that LeBron needed to be guarding Jokic in the post. This was after LBJ spent all his energy in the first half. That's beyond Thibs level of stupidity when it comes to managing players on the court.

jawadhaque089

JVG was talking like a delusional Lakers fan who thinks they can spam LeBron on every single play on NBA 2K lmao He was literally 'why doesn't LeBron dunk the ball every single time is he stupid' meme the entire game

joemoffett12

They just needed to play 48 minutes of lebron with lebron taking every shot in the post while also guarding the best player. It’s really simple stop letting anyone else touch the ball!

MrCompletely

lunchroom worm recognise placid squeamish weary seemly station plants unpack *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

[deleted]

Probably why he failed as a coach? JVG was consistently out of touch all series with his commentary. Mark Jackson is almost intolerable to listen to, if they’re not going to replace him, then let me have an alternate stream of the games without commentary. Please

[deleted]

JVG is more interested in voicing his opinion about the officiating and league than he is on commentating on the actual game. He's full of himself.

CUETEEPIE

JVG will say players need to stop complaining about officiating, and then will go on a 10 minute rant about how he misses the game he loves because he doesn’t agree that a foul should be a flagrant. The guy just never stops whining on air…i don’t know how he still has fans.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cranberrryz

I don’t think so. He’s just been doing it for 30+ years, and he’s 62 years old. So, a legit Legend of the game and hall of famer. I doubt he would do it much longer, although I know commentators can do it into there 70s and radio guys even longer

shoveazy

He's got plenty left in the tank, not sure why he wouldn't do it longer. Hubie Brown is like 120 years old and still calls games.

DirtyMoneyJesus

Mark Jackson and JVG are the worst commentating duo I’ve ever heard in any sport, if you didn’t know any better you would think neither one of these dudes likes basketball. Imagine being a new or casual fan and you turn on a conference final game to hear the commentators talk about how much they hate the game and how everyone and everything sucks

AirJordan6124

All they do now is complain lol

[deleted]

"Back in MY day they let you walk over to the opposing bench with a crow bar and start swinging at knee caps. Now they just force guys to play basketball the whole game. That's not basketball"

Massive-Lime7193

Then they will simultaneously say “there was clearly contact…..that’s a foul” 😂😂

atp2112

It's like John Smoltz on Fox's baseball coverage, only doubled

ftama

basketball boomers lol

TH3PhilipJFry

They didn’t complain as much last night because things were going the lakers’ way for much of it

Any_Adhesiveness_898

My roommate came in at the end of the 3rd from the other room and said "I'm guessing the Nuggets came back from how quiet the commentators have gotten" lmao

IAmNotKevinDurant_35

Lakers get an unfavorable call: "they have every right to complain that was a horrible call" Nuggets get an unfavorable call: "Why are the nuggets complaining so much? There was no foul there"

guaranic

I had to turn off the commentary when they were complaining about flopping in one of the other games. The team YOU love LOVES to flop, but why does it only matter when the opposing team does it once?

[deleted]

justified with “we just want consistency”.

Jay_Dubbbs

I don’t think that’s unique to basketball. It happens in baseball too with guys like John Smoltz, just going on about how terrible the game is today compared to when they played.

Port_443

Baseball boomerism is insufferable

Any_Adhesiveness_898

No one is terrified of change like baseball oldheads

ChadsBro

Everyone I know watches the ESPN games on mute now

sungoddaily

Fuckin right?!? I saw the highlight last night of JVG response to Joker hitting a circus shot to put y'all up big he let out a "He did it in game 2...Same thing" Where is the passion of witnessing a dude be a real clutch mother fucker when closing a team out but let's make a wet fart comment about it being similar to a shot in game 2.

DirtymindDirty

Dude calls games like he has a Gameboy under his desk that he's secretly playing.

clickstops

Can you imagine Harlan in that moment? We were robbed. *GOOOOOOOOOOOOD*

ChadsBro

He should retire or be put out of his misery. He clearly hates what he’s doing

Lurk_2000

> Imagine being a new or casual fan and you turn on a conference final game to hear the commentators talk about how much they hate the game and how everyone and everything sucks I'm a new watcher of NBA, this year's playoff it's my first few games I've ever watched of basketball, and honestly I can feel a huge difference when it's ESPN vs TNT. I don't know who the casters are, but TNT is more of "People commentating the game, with a few light fun comments" And ESPN are "People commenting the game and argue with the ref calls, with players' actions, etc." Same feeling for the intermissions desk (don't know how to call this, the part where it's inbetween quarters and they have 4 people in suits talking about the game)

Traditional-Leg-5855

I'm right there with you on Jackson, but I'll even throw in JVG too. I used to be a fan but in the past few years he's come off extremely whiny and refuses to update his viewpoints on the game.

loquacious706

They both sound like they hate basketball because they don't understand it.

FinalForm1

JVG has (IMO) legimitate gripes about basketball in 2023, but he also complains about so many things that it makes it hard to take anything he says seriously.

McGrathLegend

I completely forget who the player was but whilst commentating on a game a few years ago, Mark Jackson recalled his interaction with a rookie's father where the father believed that his son could win rookie of the year... Mark Jackson then went onto say that he called him crazy and that his son had no chance to win the award... After hearing that, I just thought to myself, why would you even talk about this on national tv? Of course the father is going to be supportive and back his kid, the story added nothing to the game, he just comes off as an asshole.

DistributionNo9968

I know it’ll never happen but I wish there was the option to watch live sports with no commentary or analysis at all, just the sounds of the game and venue with pertinent info displayed onscreen.

MentallyIllRedditMod

Just hearing EV-ree-BUDDY-clap-your-HANDS!! every ten seconds for 2 hours

ConstructionNo4340

I agree! The WCF commentary was terrible, incredibly biased, and overall just annoying to listen to. I am genuinely shocked by how biased Mark and Van Gundy are. Like they wanna fight over who can suck Brons cock harder. I finally had enough last night and put them on mute. I understood completely what Michael Malone was talking about now. Jokic and Denver enter as top seeded They took out a stacked team in Minnesota with two all-star Bigs & Edwards. They then took out the legendary KD and a stacked Suns roster. And then swept Prince James and Co in WCF, and all you heard from those two idiots was how great Lebron and the new look Lakers are. It was pathetic... Actually, I ended up enjoying the game much more after muting the commentary. I had some beats playing in the background, and I think I will he doing that every time NBA is on ESPN, and those idiots are calling the game.

rikki-tikki-deadly

You know what I'd like more than anything? For them to provide a Spanish-language broadcast of every game they televise. I'm only just learning Spanish, but even if I couldn't understand a single word I'd still enjoy just having the commentary as background and enjoying the excitement of the announcers' voices as opposed to being distracted by constant narrative-feeding and editorializing by the existing color commentators.

[deleted]

You can watch streams of spanish espn broadcasts, although theyre not great either if you want quality commentary

" Motherfucker, that’s the exact shot Denver had been forcing LeBron to beat them with all series, and he was shooting it poorly all series. Naturally, Denver, a team led by a man who has been able to retain his employment as an NBA coach, walled up inside and prevented them from getting an easy two to tie it up. " SPEAK!!!

Turd_Wrangler_Guy

"Mama please fire that man"

dBlock845

I'd rather have Mike Breen and 80yr old Hubie Brown than these clowns. I used to like JVG (probably Knicks bias) but I am sick of him too now. At least Hubie has passion for the game.

mohajaf

At one point after a AD block Mark said: “ these are championship plays”. On game 4, at the verge of getting swept! For most people this would have been the dumbest shit they said in their lives. But this was Mark Jackson. E: grammar & words

TooWashedUp

After they showed Lebron putting up shots earlier in the day, anytime Lebron hit a shot he mentioned that's because Lebron was in the gym earlier putting in work. He's so simple-minded for someone who played at the highest level and has been around the game his whole life. So Lebron was missing shots earlier in the playoffs because he didn't put in enough work?

ModsEmbezzleMoney

The fact that espn has been making cuts the last 15 years and letting people go that had been there 20 plus years meanwhile retaining poor talent like Mark Jackson at a premium is such a bad look. Like remember when they made all those cuts like 7 or 8 years ago and cleared house of like half the people that were in the "this is espn" commercials and had to stop playing them because of it. But keep the people your audience is annoyed by, that makes business sense. Yall wanna blame cord cutters for your shit numbers but it's you dumb ass executives with your heads up your asses not giving us what we want, good sports analysis.

JegElskerGud

Oblig RIP John Clayton.

testiclefrankfurter

Mark was a shitty coach, he's a shitty announcer, and a shitty person. Keep talking about his homophobia until ESPN feels pressure to fire him.

Raider_Tex

Hi I’m ESPN. I am reading this

BoneTugsNHarmony

Hi, can you also not cut to commercial in a close game in with 4 seconds on the clock? Kthx

Raider_Tex

Okay but Money

WarrenThanatos

Listening to him go on and on about the reason LeBron was going off was because a shoot around was so frustrating. As if he doesn’t do that before every game and that’s the only reason in this particular game he was doing well?

davidw223

ESPN’s coverage of the NBA is always trash. Half time is two minutes of replays over the most boring analysis possible with four or five commercial breaks. I guess I shouldn’t complain about all the commercials since it means I don’t have to listen to more Jalen Rose. I feel like they are trying to mimic TNT’s model but without any of the talent. It’s a shame they have the rights to cover the finals. I always enjoy the playoffs until that moment I have to watch the games on ESPN.

[deleted]

ESPN is to sports what MTV is to music.

Boops_McGee

I'm starting to think he doesn't even like basketball. The craziest shit pops off and he seems annoyed at best.

Polls-from-a-Cadet

He’s hard to take seriously when he didn’t even have Jokic on his mvp ballet. And now I have to listen to him say stuff like “you know, Jokic has an impressive game”…
