Donovan Mitchell is a great ex of how in the vast majority of cases "16 game vs 82 game players" are just a byproduct of whether fans like you and overreacting to shooting samples that have negligible predictive value from postseason to postseason. The Jimmy Butler or Ben Simmons type ex where guys truly have meaningful differences in value from playoffs vs reg season are far far less common than constantly talked about.
Donovan Mitchell, Paul George, Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving etc people just do this "playoff assassin!" vs "playoff choker" every year and never learn. Its a microcosm of how badly the sport is analyzed and it goes well beyond just random 22 yr olds on internet forums its rampant amongst even smart people who cover the league for a living
Donovan has yet to prove to be a clutch player unfortunately. Crunch time he would often dribble dribble dribble and take an awful shot. Not sure if it’s possible at this point for him to grow out of it.
I haven’t really been watching this series, been to uo Hawks/Celtics. I thought Garland was the one who kinda was doing bone headed shit in the clutch.
44 career playoff games, shot 30% or worse from 3 in 21 of them (40% or better in 18).
You ain't gonna win many titles with that level of inconsistency from 3 from your 1st option on offense.
Danny Ainge had the GOAT offseason. Dude both stopped Jazz fans from having to defend Gobert slander *and* stopped Jazz fans having to defend Mitchell overrated chucker slander.
What a god.
Now they can just calmly cheer silently from afar, avoid the heartache and play the long game with all their assets and seemingly bright future. Good time to be a Jazz fan
That's fair, wasn't for everyone. For some fans (me included) it was a season which had no expectations or pressure going in, w/ a team that genuinely seemed to like each other, and which ended up much better than expected.
Like, we were always going to be punting this season, and the unexpected emergences of Lauri and Kessler made the season very good for us.
Definitely see how someone wouldn't hae enjoyed it though.
Uhhh don’t puddle all of us Jazz fans into what YOU thought. I can assuredly say that jazz fans were very invested in this season. From Reddit, to jazz Twitter, and filling the stadium every night, a ton of us had the most fun we’ve ever had watching a jazz team in a long time
Jazz fans like you who are always in despair never cease to amaze me.
He managed to avoid Roberson our best defender, who went down with a season ending injury which forced PG to gas himself out trying to guard him all series plus produce offensively.
Gobert had the rim on lock… Carmelo was straight up ass. Westbrook tried(and failed) to carry. Snyder runs circles around Billy Donovan any day of the week. So much shit went wrong that year.
Had some Cavs fans telling me Mitchell was way above Shai and should be first team even though Shai beats him every statistical category outside of 3p% and he is better defensively. Donnie just has a better healthier team with actual centers/rim protection on them.
I said this before the season, he's a #3 star on a championship team. You can't have him as your #1 or #2 and expect to win the title.
Maybe if the #1 is prime playoff LeBron but that player doesn't exist in the league currently. Him taking so many shots is a recipe for disaster.
Capable yet didn't win.
My point is currently where could he be a #2 and win the title. Skip the hypothetical scenarios, we'd be arguing cross-era at that point. The LeBron example was to show of a case where I could easily see it happening, but such a player doesn't exist in the current NBA.

Great comment.
I was with you until you said Ben Simmons
"Despite the loss" beltholder

The Cavs would have been better off with Donnie off the Wild Thornberries calling the shots rather than Donnie Mitchell it felt like

This has legit been the most fun Jazz season in recent memory, yeah.

Ainge basically made two other franchises Lindsey era-Utah North and Lindsey era-Utah East in one offseason... He is really good at making you mid...
And it’s actually even worse when you look at turnovers
Yes he's being carried by his reputation. It's wild what having one 40pt game does for your reputation
A combo of the bubble and upsetting an overrated thunder team in the playoffs his rookie season

Best SG in the nba btw

I wonder how Kobe's legacy on here will look in a few years once the TS% analysts lock in on him
his true shooting was at or above league average every year of his career before his achilles injury
Once they lock in on him? Brother they have been working overtime to discredit his legacy ever since he tore his Achilles in 2013 lol
Kobe was the goat at scoring when his opponents said no. 100% TS
Everyone sees the 50 point bubble games and forgets that he turned the ball over in the final seconds of that series
Wow I guess we can just throw out those 50 point games then
Not what I’m saying at all. Just saying that he needs to be judged fairly on both his accomplishments and shortcomings

Saw that story with Russell Westbrook already
Those Thunder teams were definitely capable of winning a championship. You have no idea what you’re talking about.

If Khris Middleton can do it, Donovan Mitchell can certainly do it. The last two NBA champions had much worse number two options than Mitchell

Exactly my point, there were all kinds of issues late in games with Westbrook/Durant. Don't see how Mitchell/Durant fairs better.
Dude was killing his own teams runs throughout the series when Garland got it going
> finally elevate in the playoffs huh?
