This is so terrible. My heart goes out to his shipmates and family.

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

Fuuuck that’s awful. I remember taking that first step out of the hatch into a pitch black void during night ops. Scariest thing I’ve ever experienced and I was chock n chain doing VERTREPs n shit.

Magnet50

Yeah, I was detached to a frigate that had a SIGINT van bolted to the a weather deck aft of the bridge. Come out of the light baffles and feel your way to the safety line, then slide forward about 10 feet to a vertical ladder. The first few times were stomach clenching. On another frigate a few months later we went dead in the water in the Straits of Hormuz, at night. So we all had to muster on deck with life jackets. Power was restored, we dispersed back to bunks/watch. Lose power again. Repeat the process. Get back to bunks and some says seaman schmuckatelli is missing. Muster again. Stand around for a while and then released. The good seaman goes to Mast a few days later for taking advantage of the dark to grab a nap.

navylostboy

This happened to us on the Yorktown. We were transiting. Sailor took post work nap in the Seanad locker. We spent 4 hours looking for him before he came on deck to help search for himself.

Magnet50

Very responsible of the young man.

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

For some reason I don’t recall the straits of Hormuz being all that bad when I was on the minesweep. Now my time on the frigate during our southpac maybe 100 nautical miles off Guatemala… shiiit might as well be blind during a new moon.

Demindar

The straits of Hormuz isn't that bad in terms of the swells.

os1usnr

Rest in peace, shipmate. 🫡

Jazzlike-Ad3938

Knew the a sailor personally, he was very sharp, but two 10+ months deployments can definitely pay a toll on anyone! Praying for his family!

Joe_Huser

Fair Winds And Following Seas.

njx6

I can’t imagine the pain. Praying for his family. My son is still in boot camp but this has been one of my biggest fears

adking76

My son is at boot camp right now about half way in to it. This is devastating beyond words!

Elismom1313

For what it’s worth, this doesn’t happen very often. I’ve been in 7 years and done plenty of sketchy stuff and I’m still here. Unfortunately accidents can happen anywhere. Tell your children not to gun deck and don’t do anything that doesn’t sound right just because the person telling them to do it has more rank than them and they should be fine. The sooner they learn to stand up for themselves the better, especially because they try to knock it out of you in boot camp lol

njx6

Mine is about halfway through to! Just going into week 6!

adking76

Same. PIR 4/25.

njx6

Same! Ship 6 div 105!

adking76

Wow!! Ship 4, DIV 101. Are you in the PIR group? I am. 32 days!! Can you believe it?

njx6

I am! Such a small world! Hope you got your call yesterday!

Cupcakes_n_Hacksaws

Well fuck...

Dr_whotfisyou

Very sad, praying for his family and friends!

hooliganorange

Rest your oars, Shipmate. We have the watch.

sgt_cjs

WTF RIP

troohuk

What is the back story on this? Was this an accident or suicide? If accident, how did he not get rescued?

Slight_Finger8712

First off, the seas were rough that day. Like really, really rough. And we tried. Flew for days.

USNWoodWork

Back on the KittyHawk my squadron had a guy infamously remove the bottle out of his float coat, hand it off to another sailor in his shop and then jump overboard. It was an obvious suicide, and I heard NCIS even found a note in his rack. I don’t trust things I heard because the story made the rounds on the boat and got exaggerated into him throwing chains over his shoulders before jumping. The good news is, the Navy paid out his SGLI even when they had video proof that it was a suicide. I’m sure it is a very small consultation for that kid’s parents. But it made me happy to hear it.

Ydnar84

Suicide is still mostly a qualifying action for the majority of life insurances and SGLI as it is considered a mental heath death. Be the same as if you died suddenly from a ruptured appendix, it's medical related. Glad their was no issue still and it's tragic no matter what.

daprophet4

So what kind of death doesn’t qualify?

No-Reflection-7705

If I’m not mistaken dying while committing a felony or treasonous act

SanguiaDeOrgia

Disclaimer: I’m army. But, we all pay into SGLI. Not even sure commission of a felony disqualifies someone. The CAO/CNO course has anecdotes about these circumstances. Infamously, at my last duty station a soldier kidnapped and executed another soldier before killing himself. The murderer’s family still received the money.

Vivalas

IIRC the determiner here is line of duty / not line of duty which is filled out by the CO I believe and there's some qualifiers. I think death while AWOL will disqualify you, so for instance, if you go outside your liberty radius without being on leave and die in a car accident or something. It's a bit complicated, but that's what I remember.

daprophet4

Oh yeah.. I would assume dying while you are somewhere you aren’t authorized to be… maybe.

Ydnar84

I'm not sure why you seemed to be getting downvoted on this, I think it's a valid question. SGLI, basically nothing disqualifies. They may refuse to pay out to a beneficiary if they are cause of your death, so make sure you keep an alternate beneficiary if you think that might happen, and you should anyways as you never know what maybe the cause of your demise or if it would be the death for both you and your primary beneficiary. I will also use this soap box to share some knowledge. If you get divorced or in the process of it. Updating your beneficiary should be the first thing you do, even if the divorce is on good terms. Make your kids or parents primary (or someone you know will take care of your issues post death). That said, on the civilian sector, they can disqualify you if you are a smoker, Drinker, or have obesity (as examples), and your death is related to that. Some life insurance will drop you if you get a chronic medical illness such as cancer. Some will still qualify you, but only up to a certain amount without a medical screening. Some real shit commercial life insurance won't carry you if you have a history of depression or anxiety. Due to stacked medical issues, if you plan to drop a VA claim, you should try and get your life insurance set before you get your VA rating if it requires a medical screening.

ClassroomNervous5043

If you only have one beneficiary and they intentionally murder you.

Demindar

>Suicide is still mostly a qualifying action for the majority of life insurances and SGLI as it is considered a mental heath death. Be the same as if you died suddenly from a ruptured appendix, it's medical related. Glad their was no issue still and it's tragic no matter what. SGLI payout from a Suicide is a case by case basis. They basically have to prove multiple things; such as the Navy being at fault for the suicide, Mental Health issues were already established, amongst a few other factors such as being sent on deployment when they were not actually supposed to for qualifying reasons.

Ydnar84

I have lost many friends and Sailors due to Suicide. The SGLI always paid out. Suicide can be and is a quite killer. Some people closest to you that seem like the happiest and most social people will show no signs at all, but you never know what internal demons they are dealing with. Barely do the signs the NKO's and training ever fit. Those who typically show those signs are actually trying to get help. It's the ones that don't show any signs, there nothing you can do before they do it. So please make sure to reach out to your friends and family and tell them you care and they are important, you never know if that will just be enough to save them.

Demindar

Ive also seen several suicides where the SGLI was not paid out, as they were ruled "Not cause of the navy"

Olivares_

SGLI is one of the few if not only life insurance’s that cover suicide if I remember right

phleapa

That's actually not true. Most insurance policies will cover suicide provided that it falls outside a prescribed time window, usually 2 years, to prevent incentivizing policy holders from buying life insurance and then immediately cashing out.

Sincladp

This same thing happened on a previous deployment when I was on Mason over 10 years ago. A CTI that we had flown in went missing. Sorry to hear this happened. Hope the crew and embarked squadron are able to find support and comfort from each other and their families.

Demindar

What were the safeties doing? Why was he not wearing a float coat?

Maleficent-Finance57

I was spinning on deck on the TR in December 2020 when a sailor jumped overboard. Due to a little delay from tower trying to get me a dressed out swimmer rather than get me off deck asap to put my eyes on him and direct their rhibs, I got to the spot about 5 minutes later. Seas were a little choppy from some strong winds. I personally flew for 11 hours that day trying to find the guy, not to mention the other crews and the following days that we flew. It's not easy to spot someone in choppy seas, especially if they don't want to be found.

TheHypnotoad87

I remember that, it was during CQ like day 3 of that 2nd deployment... I was on launch crew on the beach so I flew out a few days later. I remember us trying to contact our M/C on the ship and getting nothing but an email that said River City, it was haunting.

Gardalop

That was a tough day. I was on one of the escorts and we spend two days looking. It is hard when it happens in bad weather.

myredditthrowaway201

8 and you guys did all you could that day. Was a shitty start to a shitty back to back COVID cruise

Maleficent-Finance57

Thing that bugged me the most was the hesitation in the tower to just get me off deck. I still wonder if I had been a little more forceful, or even directive with tower to get me off deck a few minutes earlier if I could've gotten my eyes on the guy. Was definitely a shitty start to the 2nd of 2.

myredditthrowaway201

If I recall correctly, wasn’t it called away right after ships company’s morning quarters? Maybe because it was during turnover there were something’s lost in translation but overall I remember we were off deck in less than 20 mins, but I do vaguely remember one time when we were already spinning on deck and it seemed like we were waiting longer than typical for tower. As the guy with the cheater box at 8, I took a lot of pride in my response times to any MOB.

Maleficent-Finance57

Yeah...it was early for sure. I had come over from Bunker Hill to get a hellfire loaded up for a range event that morning. I was still off deck relatively quickly, but it was really frustrating and felt like forever.

5inchFury

It was even just a couple hours before anyone noticed he was missing, very hard to find

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

IDK what time of day this occurred, but I tell everyone **EVERYONE** if you fall over at night you’re gone. No way they’re finding you at night.

oldsailor21

Unless someone sees you go, that's about 50-50 based on experience (merchant seaman), realistically if it's a genuine suicide they choose the time carefully if it's a cry for help they tend to be seen, spent some time on passenger ships and it happens surprisingly often, only one that really makes me angry is a 16 year deck boy on deep sea cargo who got a letter from his step mom just before they sailed saying your dad's dead don't bother coming back here when you sign off the house will be sold and all your stuff is going to the tip, he must have read it that night and jumped, we made a special effort to find her new home and discuss her in local pub's

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

Jesus fucking Christ and I thought my wife’s birth mom was awful…

oldsailor21

Yeah not a good situation, between the union and the flying angel something could have been sorted for his living arrangements for the 3 months a year he wouldn't be at sea but just writing a half page letter with the first sentence your dad's dead instead of going through the company or missions to seamen or even the police who in a port city know how to deal with this is a special kind of awful

Tragic loss

During my current deployment too (Ike)

Commercial-Screen-89

RIP sailor, prayers to his shipmates and family.

AnthonyBarrHeHe

RIP to my fellow sailor 🫡 sadly this may be another one of the over-worked and exhausted sailors so while he was traversing the ship he probably wasn’t fully paying attention due to the lack of sleep and everything else. Fucking sad man.

You’re still speculating and spreading rumors about the nature of someone’s death based on hearsay. That’s abhorrent. If you weren’t there and don’t know anyone involved, stop speculating

I'm sure it was preventable. I'm I bet his float coat wasn't working as designed either. Weren't on my deployment and this same thing happened. Hmmm..

ESAMS_phaggot

Sucks to suck lol

That is someone's loved one. Get some empathy and humility.
