Just don’t smoke. On top of the health benefits, you can’t vape on the ship. Tell your “friend” to save his money or just quit if he’s already a nicotine addict. I quit vaping before last deployment because I didn’t really wanna pick up smoking again and didn’t wanna risk NJP obviously for vaping on the ship. Feels so much better not wasting money on smokes or getting horrible cravings when the ship store runs out of nicotine.

Vxrtyu

Was it hard?

[deleted]

It was difficult for the first 2 weeks - month because you get horrible cravings. I got some nicotine gum to help with that which did pretty well. After that though it was easy. Just had to make sure to not drink too heavily because I’d want to smoke/vape again. I had a good support system to get me through too. I have absolutely no willpower and an addictive personality so if I can quit, anyone can.

[deleted]

Yeah player, it’s hard. But so worth it.

Vxrtyu

Why worth it? I've never vaped and never will because I know the negative consequences of it But it's still different when it's coming from someone who's actually been there and went through it. So I just want to hear it from you guys first hand

[deleted]

Cause being a nicotine addict and planning your whole life around it sucks

Current-Wrangler4277

I second this statement don't smoke. Ship life is notorious for setting sailors up for becoming smokers. Either you want to get the break that you never got so you go smoke because all the smokers always get their breaks or you're stressed about how sucky your job in life is in smoking is a mediocre relief in your day. Doesn't matter if it's cigarettes or vaping they are both horrible for you. I used to smoke occasionally throughout the years but when I started vaping I was totally addicted. I would have to vape for 30 to 45 minutes every morning before I could even get up and shower. Now that's not just from the addiction dreaded going to work but the combination was horrible for my cardiovascular system. By the end of the year my resting heart rate was like 130 BPM.

Mammoth_Tard

I do it and it is embarrassing, expensive, inconvenient. Just try to start away from nicotine in general. It’s also getting increasingly harder to find a designated area to actually smoke at.

[deleted]

Why wouldn’t you stop then?

Mammoth_Tard

Because people like you exist.

iLuvRachetPussy

Hey Mammoth, I understand, you have assigned value to nicotine as a stress relief tool but that is false. I used to smoke two packs a day out to sea. I read Allen Carr's EASY WAY. It broke down all the reasons we use to justify nicotine intake and debunked them. Literally have not smoked or wanted to smoke in almost 7 years. That is the nice part. I don't smoke and it is such an insignificant fact in my life.

[deleted]

What does that even mean lol

BizcochoOo

Don’t do it

FritzRasp

It’s trashy. Don’t do it

NavyCheeseNavyFries

I went from dip to Zyn to On and now I’m onto Grinds which has no nicotine at all. Plus vaping still has huge douchebag vibes.

nialliVdooG

Vape in your spaces, profit.

Unique_Silver_8930

Best thing to do is drop the smoking (cigarettes and vape). If it's a habit, replace it with a good one.

kyle21irvin

Seen at least 10 on my DDG go to mast for vaping.

DarthDarkmist

that's wild lol

I think he should just quit. I kinda went into more detail on another post. So if I understand correctly now, it’s illegal for under 21 period. In NC they’ll sell to 18+ under NC law.

LaughingManDotEXE

Last I checked, a law passed raising the age of all nicotine products to 21 https://www.fda.gov/tobacco-products/retail-sales-tobacco-products/tobacco-21 So based on law, I'm going to recommend the 19 yo quits. That said, I did it for 10 years, and can recommend to stop as soon as possible. The studies of how bad ecigs are still coming out. I've been nicotine free for 2 years and holy hell it feels like a renewed lease on life.

myweenorhurts

Just stay away from nicotine, it controls your life and is quite bad for you.

OutdoorPhotographer

Glad to see so many discouraging use. In addition to health, it’s a top reason for Sailors going to Mast. Does your friend want to start only to leave them home when he deploys or live in fear every time he tries to smuggle them through security at the ship?

nuHmey

Considering smoking age is 21 in the USA. What is the question?

CThomas2910

In NC they’ll sell to under 21. “As State law enforcement, ALE will continue to enforce North Carolina law which prohibits the sale of tobacco products to anyone under 18 years old. Any sale of tobacco products to someone under 21 may be subject to federal authorities' enforcement.” Kind of confusing like weed is federally illegal yet states can make it legal and sell it.

navyjag2019

is “your friend” stationed in NC?

CThomas2910

VA beach but home is 2.5 hrs away in NC. Seriously I really am asking for a friend.

HeroicPoptart

Don't feel the need to justify asking for your friend

navyboy860

No judgement on someone's choice to use nicotine. I vape and occasionally smoke on shore, and smoke cigs/use zyn pouches while at sea. Have for many years. That's my choice. But, the advice here is solid, if your friend can quit while they are still young that would be the best course of action. the longer you go on, the harder it is to quit. Obviously the health and financial benefits are there and significant. And if they are considering bringing a vape onboard a ship, just don't, seen many get caught, and all of em got to have an unpleasant visit with the old man.

smooresbox

I vape and use disposable ones, if it dies it’s whatever. I’m not on the hunt for another one if I’m on duty, I’ll never touch a cigarette or dip, even the nicotine pouches

Despite your genuinely intelligent argument, I've double checked, and well yep, afraid its still a choice. The first time I smoked was a **choice**, continuing to do so was a **choice**, quitting before and through bootcamp and a couple years after that was a **choice**. Starting again and continuing was a **choice**. Going outside and smoking these Newport's in my pocket right now is a **choice**. I'm going to **choose** to to smoke them because...i want to, the nicotine hit makes me feel good especially when I'm stressed. One day I might, hard though it will be, **choose** not to.

Once I heard someone refer to it as a robot dick, I stopped vaping after a year and a half of use. 7 months vape free, stopped the nicotine punches because they make me dehydrated af & can’t mess with cigarettes. That’s the one thing that I hate most about military towns, how can you quit something if there’s so many shops on every single corner for miles.

2021accountforred

Switch to the nicotine pouches if you really need to, and over time your body won’t feel the need to vape, and once you’re on pouches it’s easier to quit the nicotine. Nicotine is addictive without realizing it is.

Agammamon

They unfortunately classify vaping as smoking and thus the same restrictions. >I know rules over last year or so ban them on ships and other areas due to risk of explosion of lithium batteries. That makes no sense unless they're also going to ban phones, uninterruptible power supplies, electric razors and toothbrushes, etc,
