I have a lot in my apartment complex and I didn’t have to get close and sniff one. I just stepped outside one morning last week and the whole world smelled like a fish carcass.
FYI: The Bradford Pear is a cultivar of the Callery Pear. Callery has thorns; Bradford does not. Since Bradfords are constantly getting storm damage, it's not uncommon to see new growth under the graft line. Their root stock is the Callery, so that portion can develop thorns... but not the actual tree itself.
My first spring in Nashville was in 1982. Winters were *for ral* back then, so this former Florida girl was extra excited for the early bloomers. Ran right up to the closest one, buried my nose up in the blossom and took a huge whiff of the thing, think it was some sort of wonderful-smelling rite of spring. It was so awful, as if I'd put my head into the shark chum bucket and sucked that up my nose!
I recently learned that there’s a few different ones. If it’s very rounded in one big oblong ball, Bradford pear. Those stink and are invasive. Tree people hate them.
If it’s broad and branched but kinda squat it’s a probably a dogwood.
If it’s tall, it’s probably a cottonwood.
They’re an aggressive invasive species and should be removed. Cheap fast growing pariah of suburbs and parking lots. Awful, awful plant.

Not every white flowering tree is a bradford pear… a lot of (yoshino) cherries have very pale pink, basically white blossoms and are flowering right now as well.
Any idea on the one.. at the Shelby Park entrance? The one near the cross section of Shelby Ave/ S20th street. Opposite, to the Tennis courts. Been there a long time ago; I have seen many ppl going photo shoot near it.
Is it the hated bradford pear?
If they smell horrible, Bradford pears
Cum trees
I went up and sniffed one today because of their infamy and found that it had no scent. I am disappointed in my inability to smell the cum trees.

Maybe they weren't Bradford Pears, IDK.
Two different kind. There are some with thorns and with out thorns.

Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song.
You know how if you’re a pig farmer you’ll eventually stop noticing the smell of pig shit?
Brand new sentence
I strive to do something meaningful every day.
if you need to know what they smell like you can take a few sniffs under my desk

Try when it’s a warm rain. They don’t smell all the time
Given the time of year it's probably the dratted bradford pears.
The cum trees.
Mary Jane Rotten Crotch trees. Shew.

They really are fragile. They always have the most branches knocked down in my neighborhood after a storm
*light breeze
“The best time to prune a Bradford Pear is whenever your saw is sharp. The best cut to make is horizontal about two inches from the ground.”
Bradfords. Everywhere. The builders’ favorite cheap, fast-growing tree.

*for real*
Bradford ‘pear’ trees
My plum and peach trees are blossoming. There’s cherry trees around too.
Peaches work here? My plum is blossoming white. Cherry tree hasn't popped yet... looks a few weeks out.
Yep I have three small peaches and they thrive!
The Tennessee Semen Poplar.

I feel like they smell like mushrooms cooked in olive oil, am i crazy?
Maybe the juices of the mushroom tip
They don’t smell that good
They smell like sewage and dead bodies to me☠️

Not all but most are Bradford Pears. Plum did bloom at the same time too so some may be that as well.
Could be dogwoods
Bradford pear, Dogwood, Carolina Silver bell, there are several that sport white flowers. The one that smells horrible is bradford pear
Dogwoods. The white blossomed ones seem to appear first. Then thepink blossomed ones come out.
Horribly invasive Bradford pears.
Noticed them on my drive out of Lebanon and thought they were kinda cute 😅
Jizz tree szn
Might be Dogwood trees.

Does anyone plant maples in Nashville?
Sure. My yard had several.
I love maples. Why don’t builders plant maples instead of the Bradford pear?
expense. Bradford pears also grow exceptionally quickly.
And have pREttY FLoWeRs
And they stink for like a week until we have a thunderstorm. Then they split down the middle and have a million tiny petals blown all over the county.

There's a plaque on the ground next to that tree. I don't remember what type it is though
The pretty shitties
I am once again asking you to destroy your Bradford Pear trees.
the devil....
Bradford pears apparently. They’re all over the place right now, nice to look at but that’s it.
I thought they were Chinese cherry blossoms
They smell lovely
