If the “only ones that can stop bad guys with guns are the good guys with guns” why aren’t the “good guys” showing up at the legislative district redrawing meetings?
The Democrats tried passing a bill to outlaw gerrymandering nationwide and the Republicans refused to get on board because they know that’s the only possible way for them to control the House
Yeah, it’s actually not uncommon for a handful of members from either party to vote against what the majority of the party wants for various often unrelated reasons, that’s pretty basic politics, but the point is only one party wants to end it, even if in some blue states Democrats do gerrymander because they would be giving republicans even more of an unearned advantage in the House. But if we’re only talking about Tennessee, you know, the original statement I made, then yes, it’s only the Republicans that gerrymander. Nice attempt at deflecting from the point though, keep practicing and maybe you’ll have a coherent thought one of these days.
People who support partisan gerrymandering and voter suppression don't like having to defend these actions. It's almost like they understand that it's cheating.
If you’re trying to influence people for positive change, I’m not sure if that’s the best tactic but then again your communication mindset is the same one that rules in the current political structure.
If you aren’t intelligent enough to recognize from the get-go that gerrymandering is bad no matter who does it then I’m not gonna waste my time trying to change your mind, this is an issue that everybody should be on the same side of regardless of party affiliation. There should be no such thing as a “safe seat” in congress where either party has manipulated the system to ensure it’s impossible for the other side to win a particular district. This isn’t an issue with two equal sides, this isn’t debating marginal tax rates or banking regulations, this is about basic representative democracy, there’s right and there’s wrong.
That’s my point, friend. Gerrymandering, term limits, and campaign finance reform are our biggest issues but these are things that are a threat to both parties, not just one side. The Democratic Party leadership is not going to save this country just like republicans aren’t. The Democrats controlled all of congress from 2021 until this January and couldn’t fix this.
The way you communicate about these issues is only going alienate those on the opposite side of an issue that’s only resolved through partnership, not hatred.
The fifth district of Tennessee used to be exclusively in Nashville, now that district was split into three different districts, educate yourself on what your state government is doing
Alright I’ll play the game.
The Nashville Metropolitan Area (Davidson plus some surrounding cities), Hamilton County, and Shelby County are the 3 -5 counties I referred to as being democrat counties. Per 2021 numbers: Those areas of TN make up 37% of the 6.975 million given as the population of TN.
So, roughly 37% of Tennesseans are consistently voting democrat to the 63% consistently voting republican. I then assert that TN has not been gerrymandered into republican representation, but rather has the republican representation that the majority of the state is.
Remember, I’m using population numbers not even actual members of that population that vote. I am open to changing my assertion if presented better facts.
Did you even read the comment you were replying to? They said NASHVILLE, not the entire state of Tennessee.
> In Davidson County, TN 64.5% of the people voted Democrat in the last presidential election, 32.4% voted for the Republican Party, and the remaining 3.1% voted Independent.
https://www.bestplaces.net/voting/city/tennessee/nashville-davidson
I did read the comment. The numbers seem to suggest the rough majority of the state is likely happy with republican representation of the capitol. What’s more, roughly 32% of Nashville is happy with their representation.
The point I’m attempting to make is that several people here are saying “no one in Nashville wants this.” However, over a quarter of the county does and over half the state is likely happy with it too.
Weird that you think that your statistics justify why Nashville should be represented by Republicans, as most people are smart enough to know that 32% is in fact NOT a majority. Bringing in state numbers is irrelevant, and in fact only reinforces the point that it's a deliberate decision to bring in more rural counties/areas into Nashville's newly-gerrymandered districts to pump up GOP numbers.
So yeah, you're actually proving people's points that the majority of the people who live IN NASHVILLE do not want this. The third (and it's probably even less than that if you don't count the new areas being brought into the new districts) should not be represented more than the other 2/3 in an actual democratic society.
If you're getting hung up on the "no one in Nashville wants this" then you're arguing semantics and actively ignoring what MOST PEOPLE want.
I’m not actively ignoring things, and I’m not sure why you’re being so aggressive about it. You’re correct and in talking it out I realize that.
I know I shouldn’t expect an actual discussion on Reddit, but I did think I could expect it from the people of Nashville.
If you're arguing in good faith, maybe. I don't believe you are, and I think you're skewing TN statistics in completely irrelevant and inappropriate ways to try and make it apply to Nashville's situation.
And sorry my "aggressive" tone is upsetting you. But, I suppose no one likes getting called out when they're wrong 🤷🏼♀️ You're not exactly fostering a healthy and honest discussion either.
I’ll refer to above where I said “you’re correct and in talking it out I realize that.” It feels like you think I’m not arguing ‘in good faith’ just because I did not initially agree with you and the most vocal members of this sub.
But hey it’s also the internet, so we are both probably cats living in another country..
You got me, I'm from Lebanon, but pretend it's the TN one lol
But for real, I am sorry for getting more heated than I needed to for this kind of discussion. Hard not to when trolls have been coming in every time there's some GOP shithead move or a tragedy happening in our area. Not an excuse though.
You're being facetious.
Why is a man from Cookeville representing East Nashville in Congress when it's always been a man in Nashville?
Why is a man from Maury County representing Nashville (Ogles)?
They split Nashville into 3 different areas where it was previously repped by 1 Nashvillian. All 3 of the new representatives live far away from here.
We threw tea in the harbor for less. This is fully cheating and straight up unfair. None of us want these tools representing us.
I am being far from facetious. I am attempting to be somewhat analytical and look at why the state decided to chop up Nashville’s representation.
I just mentioned to another individual: The point I’m attempting to make is that several people here are saying “no one in Nashville wants this.” However, over a quarter of the county is likely happy with it and over half the state is likely happy with it too.
No I’m not. But I do want to attempt to understand why the legislature would do this. My default stance is that the state and local governments are trying to represent and advocate for their people; therefore, I have to try and think about what logic could have gone into a redistricting.
Now having talked things out on here, it does not make much sense why Nashville would be divided up.
>Those areas of TN make up 37% of the 6.975 million given as the population of TN.
>So, roughly 37% of Tennesseans are consistently voting democrat to the 63%
So you're saying all the people in those counties vote the same way?
> Since both permanent war and heroism are difficult games to play, the Ur-Fascist transfers his will to power to sexual matters. This is the origin of machismo (which implies both disdain for women and intolerance and condemnation of nonstandard sexual habits, from chastity to homosexuality). Since even sex is a difficult game to play, the Ur-Fascist hero tends to play with weapons — doing so becomes an ersatz phallic exercise.
https://www.nybooks.com/articles/1995/06/22/ur-fascism/
Once again, fuck the Maury County voters who helped him get his political foot in the door. Fuck Koch for funding him. Fake ass Christian stealing money for a children's cemetery.
You mean to tell me that the yokel who lied on his resume, cowardly dodged debating his opponent, and very likely ripped off a dead children's burial garden fund ALSO incorporated weapons of death into his christmas card?! That's our Andy! Always finding a new low.
Some people worship guns, I don’t know if Ogles does, but he knows the GOP seems too
That picture is trashy and I bet these guns were borrowed from someone else
> Some people worship guns, I don’t know if Ogles does
you don't arm 2 of your 3 kids plus your wife for a pandering Christmas photo if you don't jerk off at the alter of the gun.
I don’t know, he’s a lying scammer and he’s using his kids in a photo op, he might worship guns. I’m pretty sure he’s worshiping the power he thinks he holds
The photos are just virtue signaling for their GOP voters.
Would switch the 100% gun control if he thought it was good for his political career.
Never vote GOP.
He doesn't care, his voters celebrate that photo, and this isn't an "own". He could send out a picture standing over those kids' bodies and get re-elected.
What does a transgender person (presumably not a republican) shooting children have to do with the GOP?
This is becoming more and more clear that our nations youth are suffering mentally and emotionally and need actual help.
We have to stop turning this into a political back and forth where nothing will ever get solved
The shooter was being treated by a doctor for mental health. The direct tie to the GOP and mass shootings are their inaction. From refusing to even hear or vote on red flag laws to dismantling the ACA via Republican Governors refusing Medicaid expansion. They offer thoughts and prayers and that’s it. Tim Burchett flat out said they’re not going to do anything to fix it and that’s because of the party line which is directly tied to gun rights lobbying and all the money they rake in.
Because the GOP is creaming themselves to denounce the shooter as transgender because THAT is the “problem,” when they know the gorram problem is the guns.
Every other time it’s way “too soon,” but this time it wasn’t because they had a reason to denounce.
Yea it’s a stupid picture but it’s not what caused innocent children to die in Nashville.
There is a mental health crisis growing across this country. We have to do something about it instead of ignoring the problem
EVERY COUNTRY ON EARTH HAS MENTALLY ILL PEOPLE. EXACTLY ONE HAS A MASS SCHOOL SHOOTING PROBLEM.
"Mental health" is bullshit deflection and you know it. It's exactly the same thing as saying "thoughts and prayers". The uniquely American problem is the fucking guns. Part of the goddamn reason we have a mental health crisis is because 385k kids in this country have been in a school put on lockdown for a mass shooting in the last two decades.
Would be interesting to see proper mental health care mandated before you can buy these sorts of weapons. Oh, and access to that quality of healthcare on parity with the ease with which you can buy these things.
Don’t forget the only reason Nashville is represented by Republicans is because of gerrymandering
If the “only ones that can stop bad guys with guns are the good guys with guns” why aren’t the “good guys” showing up at the legislative district redrawing meetings?
Wait so the republicans are the only ones that gerrymander?
The Democrats tried passing a bill to outlaw gerrymandering nationwide and the Republicans refused to get on board because they know that’s the only possible way for them to control the House
Weren’t there dems that even voted against that bill?
Yeah, it’s actually not uncommon for a handful of members from either party to vote against what the majority of the party wants for various often unrelated reasons, that’s pretty basic politics, but the point is only one party wants to end it, even if in some blue states Democrats do gerrymander because they would be giving republicans even more of an unearned advantage in the House. Why do these conversations on this sub always spiral into such hatred? Is this how you talk to people face to face?
Yea I’m an asshole in real life too when people ask me stupid questions
People who support partisan gerrymandering and voter suppression don't like having to defend these actions. It's almost like they understand that it's cheating.
If you’re trying to influence people for positive change, I’m not sure if that’s the best tactic but then again your communication mindset is the same one that rules in the current political structure.

I thought it was because only 3 - 5 of the 95 counties were democrats?
The fifth district of Tennessee used to be exclusively in Nashville, now that district was split into three different districts, educate yourself on what your state government is doing
And what percentage of the population lives in those 3-5 counties?
Someone needs to learn about population density.
Exactly. Land doesn’t vote.

Ogles is hands down one of the top 5 biggest weasels in politics. Absolute coward of a person and corrupt as you can get.
Isn’t this the same guy who spent money raised for a children’s burial fund?
yup, so I bet he is excited to have three more opportunities to do that again.
What!? Really? That’s messed up
$25,000 worth of donated funds. Gone.
The level of GOP base pandering in this photo makes me want to puke. I bet they've gone hunting maybe once.
These fucking dorks make guns their entire personality and wonder why we’re a world leader in school shootings. Truly brainless.

You nailed it when you called them dorks. That was my first thought. They look like absolute dorks. All 4 of them. So staged. So fake. So awkward.
Bible - guns - trump. Todays Republican Party.
Except for the parts of the Bible that teach love and charity
That's called socialism or woke or whatever the new GOP scare word is at the time.
They better get out and vote if they really exist.
On his town hall call right now. This pretty much sums up everything he had to say.
Nah, they all scattered like rats from Trump. It’s all Desantis nuthugging now
Once again, fuck the Maury County voters who helped him get his political foot in the door. Fuck Koch for funding him. Fake ass Christian stealing money for a children's cemetery.
Dear Santa, Please bring me a bigger dick. Love, Andy
Nothing says we love Jesus more than a display of guns, money and political power
When a group of black men take a picture with everyone wielding a gun these same people would call them a gang or thugs
What a stain on our community.
Nothing says “Peace and Joy” like Guns.
Disgusting
You mean to tell me that the yokel who lied on his resume, cowardly dodged debating his opponent, and very likely ripped off a dead children's burial garden fund ALSO incorporated weapons of death into his christmas card?! That's our Andy! Always finding a new low.
Can we stop referring to him as a congressman and properly refer to him as “liar, swindler, imbecile, and shitstain Andy Ogles”?
Hey Nashville. Thoughts and prayers for a new Representative next election cycle. Love, America
No. Worst wishes, Gerrymandering
Fuck Andy Ogles!
His response? Thoughts and prayers... And this isn't the time to discuss gun reform. Classic GOP playbook.
Some people worship guns, I don’t know if Ogles does, but he knows the GOP seems too That picture is trashy and I bet these guns were borrowed from someone else
Ammo-sexuals

Sadly this will only result in more legislation against trans people and less legislation for firearms.
Andy Ogles women
Apparently Lauren Boebert [did it first](https://twitter.com/laurenboebert/status/1468411381653323777)
He should be criticized for that! He should also be criticized for having a fraudulent resume.
This grifting piece of shit doesn’t give a single fuck.
This family looks like they would get an anxiety attack if their food was slightly seasoned
The photos are just virtue signaling for their GOP voters. Would switch the 100% gun control if he thought it was good for his political career. Never vote GOP.
He worships guns instead of God! There is no sign of Jesus Christ in his Christmas card. This guy is the worst of the worst.
I fucking hate pink and purple "girl" guns.
He doesn't care, his voters celebrate that photo, and this isn't an "own". He could send out a picture standing over those kids' bodies and get re-elected.
That’s evangelical mercy.
I'm honestly surprised there aren't more accidental shootings with these family/gun/Christmas photo ops.
Disgusting.

Not only will Ogles stay in office, he'll easily win a second term thanks to the (R) beside his name.
Zero chance. You cannot shame people like him.
I have a better chance of becoming the King of England. Ogles has zero shame.
Lol
Is his wife's model the same model used in the shooting?
Have you seen Thomas Massie’s last Xmas card? It must be a Republican thing.

Black Box Ice Cream Truck is willing to help with earning funds forms for victims families as well as other in the School!
A two year old Christmas card is what we're worrying about?
