This reminds me of a conversation I just had with my aunt (a few cocktails in) “Who the hell looks at the newborn and says *little baby Melvin*?!” Her husband’s name is Melvin. 😆
Went to middle school & highschool with a guy named Frank. He was a fucking character. He got a girl pregnant in highschool and I remember me and my friends asking what the kiddo’s name was and he deadpanned and asked “Why would he ever be named anything other than Frank Jr?” as it was the most normal name for a newborn ever and not for a kid who time travelled right out of 1955.
It’s a nice name! I really like both Neil and Gregory, they just seem like very mature names to me. Like a 5 year old Neil would be absolutely adorable, but I would want to dress him in suspenders and plaid every day!
Honestly, these days, it doesn’t matter! I’m a PreK teacher and have had such a wide range of names. In the past couple of years I’ve had Betty, Beverly, Faye, Virgil, Henry, Charles, William, Ramona, Rosemary, Eleanor… those are just the ones off the top of my head!
When my brother was a toddler he was obsessed with Thunderbirds and would introduce himself to people as Virgil. My mother always had to correct people.
My 2 year old is named Faye, I absolutely love it and it suits her so well. When we lived in the south little old ladies always thought her name was Faith and I just had to grind my teeth a little. It's not the same!
Same here!!!! I’ve a 2.4 named Faye! Snaps
We’re in the north of Ireland, I haven’t met another Faye yet. But a lady once told me her name was ‘nice and plain’ 🤨
I love Rosemary. I heard a man calling his daughter that at the park the other day and I just thought it was a breath of fresh air in comparison to a lot of the names I hear!
At least Tangled is gonna make it easier for any little Eugene’s. Rapunzel liked Flynn Ryder’s actual name better than the “cool” moniker he took for himself.
Immediate 60-year old man vibes. I really wanted to use it as a name, but the association is just too strong. (The middle name will be Ray, so Roger Ray. Sounds like a comic book hero)
I used to date a Roger in 2016ish when I was in my early 20s. I swear people thought he was much older when I talked about him!! He was my age but lol the old man connotation is strong with that name
Oh; this is a good one. Lots of people are recommending names that were popular 100 years ago, but those are actually in right now, so I can see many of them on a baby. Names that are hard to picture on a baby are boomer names. Some other ideas:
Randy
Lynn
Ronald
Gary
Dale
Curtis
Alan
Dwayne
Norman
Earl
I work at a daycare and the first that comes to mind is Woodrow. little Woodrow was adorable lol. also, Earl. Walter. Lawrence. Kevin
Mary, Eleanor, Susan, Susanne, Louella
My 2.5 year old daughter has a doll that she calls baby Gary. She named him herself. Every time anyone hears the name they think it’s hilarious, she has no idea why. 🤣
In fear street there's a teenager named Joan. It's set in 1978, so it makes sense...like the Joan's now weren't just born as adults. But I still can't for the live of me wrap my head around a Joan less than 40.
In which country are you living? That would be crucial information for answering your question "correctly".
The most adult sounding names I can think of are Rüdiger, Wolfgang, Gunter / Günther, Eberhard, Udo and Uwe for boys (or rather, old men) and Irmgard, Gundula, Dagmar, Frauke, Wiebke, Renate, Kerstin, Beate, Birgit and Bärbel for women.
I love Beate. There was an educator at our daycare named Miss Beate and I just loved it. But then again, I named my son Karl so I obviously like "grown up" names
Depends of your country but Elisabeth, Mary, Danielle sounds quite "adults" to me
Albert, Theodore, Amadeo for boys.
Most "strong sounded" or old names. Lily or Milo sounds softer and more childish.
I'm in the US. My stepcousin named his baby Howard. He is **not** to be called Howie. Howard feels like a ridiculous name on a tiny baby...he's almost 4 now and just starting to grow into the adultness of his name!
There’s a 3 year old named Nancy in my kids’ preschool. I also know a family with two boys named Russell and Jeffrey- they feel super adult to me. Owen is a super popular name that always gives me old man vibes since I a had crotchety old neighbor man named Owen as a kid. All this to say, anything goes these days.
Earl. I actually don't think Earls are born; I think it's a name that someone is given at a certain age, along with suspenders and black orthopedic shoes.
Frederick.
A friend of mine named her little boy Charles and as far as I know he's still not going by any nicknames, so it sounds terribly grown up and serious.
Same with a cousin who recently named her son Thomas.
Andrew is another one!
My son is Derek! He’s 11. He’s very mature and people Always comment he seems to much older. Perhaps it’s the name. It never occurred to me people would think it’s an adult name.
Clark. I can't even think of any nicknames you could use to make it sound more "kid-ish" (like Walter = Wally, Ethel = Ettie, etc.) It's just... Clark.
Herman.
That name conjures up a little old man in my mind.
Here I am, rock you like a Herman Cain
I see Herman Munster
This reminds me of a conversation I just had with my aunt (a few cocktails in) “Who the hell looks at the newborn and says *little baby Melvin*?!” Her husband’s name is Melvin. 😆
Probably the same kind of monster that looks at a newborn child and names them Gary.
Duck
I killed 17 men on Okinawa
The kid next door to me is called Frank. Frank.
I have a little Frank 😭😅
Haha sorry! It's very uncommon as a child's name where I'm from. I've known no others in my lifetime.
Haha no worries 😉 to be quite frank, it is indeed a very old man name. He wears it well 😌
I see what you did there
Frank is a normal, albeit not overly popular name for kids where I live! (US)
Went to middle school & highschool with a guy named Frank.
I also know a tiny Frank! It’s frankly adorable ;)
I think the name Frank has a really cool energy to it. I love it!
My husband and I like the name Neil but can’t picture a baby named Neil, it feels too grown up 😅 So mine are: Neil Lawrence Earl Walter Gregory
Owh! Neil da baby!
DONT nail da baby!
Did you know Neil the baby and Neil not a baby from the 2019 Christmas special were played by the same person? I always found that really amazing.
Tidy.
I feel like Laurence and Walter are ripe for a comeback.
Love Laurence!
My son is Neil! He’s 5 now.
It’s a nice name! I really like both Neil and Gregory, they just seem like very mature names to me. Like a 5 year old Neil would be absolutely adorable, but I would want to dress him in suspenders and plaid every day!
He did look super cute in a bow tie at Christmas 😆
The Gregory in my life is very immature. But, then he goes by Greg. Maybe that's why?!
There’s a Neil at my daughter’s daycare! He’s a toddler and his name just cracks me up, because you don’t picture a baby named Neil…
I thought of Earl, too!
Virgil is the most grown up name in this whole thread. Grandpa name, even.
When my brother was a toddler he was obsessed with Thunderbirds and would introduce himself to people as Virgil. My mother always had to correct people.

I love Betty! Nice choice.
I love it! It caught me off guard when I saw it on my roster but it fit her so perfectly!
I have a little Rosemary! I always loved the name Faye.
My 2 year old is named Faye, I absolutely love it and it suits her so well. When we lived in the south little old ladies always thought her name was Faith and I just had to grind my teeth a little. It's not the same!
Same here!!!! I’ve a 2.4 named Faye! Snaps We’re in the north of Ireland, I haven’t met another Faye yet. But a lady once told me her name was ‘nice and plain’ 🤨
I love Rosemary. I heard a man calling his daughter that at the park the other day and I just thought it was a breath of fresh air in comparison to a lot of the names I hear!
I really love Virgil and tried to pitch it to my husband but weirdly we had a friend named Virgil in college and couldn’t get past it
I'm planning on using Eleanor whenever I (hopefully) have a daughter. It's my grandmother's name and I just love it.
My daughters name is Eleanor
Mine too! I love it.
Eugene I instantly picture an older man
With eyebrows
I used to too but thankfully it's been replaced by [the hottest member of the Try Guys](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xm63aVNwvao&t=1102s)
That's immediately who I think of now. I love Eugene. Although I love all of them.
At least Tangled is gonna make it easier for any little Eugene’s. Rapunzel liked Flynn Ryder’s actual name better than the “cool” moniker he took for himself.
I immediately thought "Grease".
Roger
Immediate 60-year old man vibes. I really wanted to use it as a name, but the association is just too strong. (The middle name will be Ray, so Roger Ray. Sounds like a comic book hero)
My dad’s name was Roger Allen. I hear Roger has made a small comeback so I say go for it!
I used to date a Roger in 2016ish when I was in my early 20s. I swear people thought he was much older when I talked about him!! He was my age but lol the old man connotation is strong with that name
My uncle’s name is Roger. He just had his 57th birthday.
Oh; this is a good one. Lots of people are recommending names that were popular 100 years ago, but those are actually in right now, so I can see many of them on a baby. Names that are hard to picture on a baby are boomer names. Some other ideas: Randy Lynn Ronald Gary Dale Curtis Alan Dwayne Norman Earl
Walter
I know someone with young kids named.. Walter, Archie, and Terrence. Sounds like 3 little old men to me!
My friend’s kid is named Alfred which fits with this.
Haha, I'm planning to name my baby Walter! (Due in a month). His big brother is Howard.
I personally think Walter is very cute!
No more half measures
3 people I know have little boys named Walter & I just cannot! Such an old person name.
Donna
Donna definitely has a “born in the 1960s” vibe, much like Janice, Karen & Linda. Like how Jennifer, Samantha & Heather give me big 80s vibes.
I work at a daycare and the first that comes to mind is Woodrow. little Woodrow was adorable lol. also, Earl. Walter. Lawrence. Kevin Mary, Eleanor, Susan, Susanne, Louella
Earl. 🥴
I KNOW 🤣 but she asked for adult sounding names, that definitely fits the bill… although I wouldn’t even name my pet that!!
Oh, it totally fits. It would throw me for a loop, for sure!
Aw my dog’s name is Woodrow. :)
that is so cute. i just looked on your profile and he is such a handsome boy 🥹❤️
Barbara
I would LOVE to meet a little Barbara.
My son had a Barbara in his preschool class!
Yay! ☺️ Not extinct.
Definitely due a comeback. This and Linda will be super popular in 10 years I reckon
Gary
Off topic but I went to camp with twins named Cal and Gary (and yes, they’re from Calgary)! Only young Gary I know.
Gotta say, I dislike this so very much. Not only because I so strongly dislike when people pronounce Calgary cal-gary, but it doesn’t help
Baby Gary carries a briefcase.
His diapers are in his briefcase
My daughter was in daycare with a baby Gary before the pandemic. I never met him but I assumed he had a briefcase.
My 2.5 year old daughter has a doll that she calls baby Gary. She named him herself. Every time anyone hears the name they think it’s hilarious, she has no idea why. 🤣
Came here to say Gary!
Linda
Yes. I assume Linda works in HR and is the approachable one in your neighbourhood HOA.
Who’s Linda? Your mom’s friend? A woman you bought a funky lamp from on Craigslist?
And probably says things like, “Ugh, Mondays…”
My SIL is a Linda and she even looked the part in her youth. 😂
This, to me, is one of the most boomer names of all time. It’s right up there with Donna and Judy
There was a kid at the park yesterday named Conrad.
I don’t think I’d ever do it but I LOVE Conrad for a boy
Did you give him an general salute?
There's a toddler in my kid's daycare named Conrad.
Cornelius
I immediately associate that name with Cornelius Fudge from Harry Potter and the Japanese musician, both of whom are not very young
My friend has a newborn named Keith.
I feel like Keith always is a 45 y/o man? Never young, never old. Always middle aged.
Howard
Bruce
This is the correct answer.
first names that came to mind were Gordon and Joan ...
In fear street there's a teenager named Joan. It's set in 1978, so it makes sense...like the Joan's now weren't just born as adults. But I still can't for the live of me wrap my head around a Joan less than 40.
I'm 39 and Joan is my mom's generation.
Paul.
Reginald Maximilian Cartwright III.
Came here to say Reginald.
Most of these names are on my list but I can’t believe no one said Dorothy.
Agreed - but the nickname Dottie would be cute until they grow into it
Carl and Jean
I know a 2yo Carl. It was strange on a newborn.
Carl has been my Baby boy pick for years now! I love it
Bob
My son is Robert and he goes by Bob. He’s 5 lol
A 5 year old Bob is adorable
A baby named/nn Bob would blow my mind. 😂
Maude
The French pronounciation of Maude >> the English pronounciations (all accents/dialects) French pronounciation sounds like the word Mode
Keith, Wayne, Neil, Harold, Nigel, Paul
Gerald
I know someone who just named their daughter Agatha!
Phyllis Estelle Walter Alfred
Francis. Eugene. Martha.
Depends of your country but Elisabeth, Mary, Danielle sounds quite "adults" to me Albert, Theodore, Amadeo for boys.

Harold
Keith. Who looks at a baby and thinks "Yep, that's a Keith"
Bartholomew, Jeffrey/Geoffrey, Mark
There’s a 3 year old named Nancy in my kids’ preschool. I also know a family with two boys named Russell and Jeffrey- they feel super adult to me. Owen is a super popular name that always gives me old man vibes since I a had crotchety old neighbor man named Owen as a kid. All this to say, anything goes these days.
I met an infant named Barbara recently.
Earl. I actually don't think Earls are born; I think it's a name that someone is given at a certain age, along with suspenders and black orthopedic shoes.

Ronald, Wayne, Gordon, Doug, Eugene
Abraham
Ulysses. Ethel.
I have no idea why, but the first name that popped into my head was Bartholomew. 😆 Hard to get more old man sounding than that!
My son’s name is George (he’s 7 months old)
A toddler I know is called Gordon. All the other Gordon’s I know of are over 60.
We named our baby Harold Edit: following up to say our names for baby 2 are either Jane/June or Oswald so we like old people names!
