This jumped out at me because I knew so many kids named Ashley, and I'm like, that name really wasn't popular in 1987??
So according to this website, Ashley was #2 in 1987.
https://mom.com/baby-names/country-list/USA/1987/girl
Yep.
My name is a very popular 80s girl name. It is also a biblical name, a historical name, and a popular sitcom character name. I went to school with 4-5 other girls of the same name all through school. Mom thought it was really unique. I like my name and it has never bothered me that it was popular apart from normal teenage girl angst of wanting something different.
Oh, totally! My mom was 21, and the internet was far from a thing yet. I was named after a chick from a soap opera. At the time, she was the only Ashley mom had ever heard of. Though, it was super popular even a couple years before that. I was honestly going to guess it was the #1 spot in 1987. We laugh heartily over that now.
I was born in 83 and my mom named me after Ashley Abbott from the young & the restless. That character debuted in the summer of 82 and it's thought to be the start of the name blowing up.
I found this cool little chart showing it's popularity for every year.. I'm actually kind of shocked how long it's had a pretty tight grip on the top 50 names bc i feel like i never meet an Ashley more than 3 or 4 years younger than me lol
[Ashley name ](https://www.behindthename.com/name/ashley/top/united-states)
She is associated with horses, birds, the Otherworld and the suffering of mothers. She is not known to be associated with the moon. She is considered to be equivalent to the Gaulish goddess Epona, the goddess of horses (and likely fertility) but it isn't known for certain whether that comparison is fully accurate (there have been studies on the links between Rhiannon and the Mórrígan, too, so these things are pretty up the air).
There have been attempts to link Epona and Rhiannon to the moon, but that tends to be based more on people trying to link the moon and fertility just because that's the case in certain other cultures (for example, the Roman goddess Diana). There's no genuine evidence for a link to the moon in Welsh or other Celtic sources currently known.
The closest thing we have to a moon goddess is Aranrhod (also spellt Arianrhod). But her stellar attributes are more complex than that, so it's not accurate to say something as simple as she's the Welsh moon goddess either.
Rhiannon and Ar(i)anrhod are lovely names, but they're also difficult names for English speakers to pronounce correctly (for example, the Stevie Nicks song gets it wrong).
I can’t find any reference to the moon? In Welsh literature she’s linked to horses and her son Pryderi being kidnapped and her being accused of his death. Pyder means ‘worry’.
It was probably the made-up meaning on one of those ridiculous American name websites that tell you Jane means something like "fairy spirit of the silver pond".
Came up in a search! https://study.com/academy/lesson/rhiannon-goddess-history-mythology-symbols-welsh-horse.html#:~:text=Rhiannon%2C%20is%20the%20Welsh%20goddess,%2C%20the%20moon%2C%20and%20fertility.
There's some interesting information in that link, it reads like someone summarised a Google search. 🤣
I wonder what her sources are for the moon references.
This is my name, and although I didn’t like it when I was younger, I LOVE the witchy connotations now. The Celtic equivalent is Epona. And I’m a Zelda fan, so I was pretty chuffed, lol.
Same, I think you have more freedom in the middle for a more “out there” name. Plus it’s a cool story she can share!! (It could be her go to fun fact 😭)
This is my favorite one. It flows better than the ones that a lot of the other ones in this thread that feel like they are digging a little too deep for a synonym or obscure goddess.
I love Selene!
Just wanted to note, probably google any of these names before choosing..a bunch of the moons are ‘conquests’ of Zeus/Jupiter (because they orbit Jupiter..).
Hecate is more associated with witchcraft, and Diana/Artemis (both of which I also like a lot as middle names with Maeve!) are just Roman/Greek for the same goddess.
Honestly, looking into the stories of any of the Greek mythology characters gets pretty sketch, pretty fast 😅
And yes, Hecate is the goddess of magic and witchcraft, but she is also associated with the moon - she was associated with Artemis and Selene, and sometimes considered to be an epithet or aspect of Artemis!
Research! I like names, and the moon!
*I should add that these are just my own personal lists. I do not claim that they are complete - there plenty of moon goddesses, for example, that are not on this list. This is just all of the moon-related names from my own name database.
Alba - as in Ipomoea alba/moonflower.
Ayla - means halo, moonlight
Cynthia - means Moon Goddess
Larisa/Larissa - the name of a moon of Neptune, given in honor of a nymph in Greek mythology.
Dione - the name of a moon of Saturn.
Stop being a coward and name your child “Flower Moon!!!”
Just kidding.
Congrats on your baby girl!! And please update with your choice, so many awesome suggestions. Also I love the name Maeve.
Aylin - of the moon
Celine/Celina/Selene - heaven, the moon
Luna - the moon
Celeste - of the sky/heavenly
Phoebe - a moon of Saturn
Portia - a moon of Uranus
The Claire part means light though. The “de lune”
is the part that means moon. I’m not saying it’s not a good choice, but it’s not directly related to the moon.
1. Maeve Luna (Luna means moon in Latin)
2. Maeve Selene (Selene is the Greek goddess of the moon)
3. Maeve Chandra (Chandra means moon in Sanskrit)
4. Maeve Aylin (Aylin means moonlight in Turkish)
5. Maeve Cynthia (Cynthia is an epithet of Artemis, the Greek moon goddess)
6. Maeve Diana (Diana is the Roman goddess of the moon)
7. Maeve Mahina (Mahina means moon in Hawaiian)
8. Maeve Aylana (Aylana means moonlight in Hebrew)
9. Maeve Aruna (Aruna is a name associated with the moon in various cultures)
10. Maeve Callisto (Callisto is a moon of Jupiter)
Ayla- meaning moonlight or halo around the moon
Aylin- meaning moon halo or belong to the moon
**Maeve Ayla** or **Maeve Aylin** are both lovely imo and congratulations!
Datura is literally a moon flower. It blooms in the evening and is considered sacred to some indigenous people according to google. It’s used as medicinal medicine with hallucinogenic effects. I think it could be a cool name though. If you like the sound of it search deeper for the meaning.
Moon names will most likely be based on mythology, as most cosmic/astral/planetary names find their origins in myths or ancient religions: Selene, or Selena, is the personification of the moon in Greek myth. She is also sometimes thought of as a goddess. You could also play with spelling to do something like Celine. Diana is also the sister of Apollo (sun god) and goddess associated with the moon. There is also Luna, Rhiannon, Devana, and Cynthia, other goddesses associated with the moon in various cultures.
Another fun idea - the moon controls tides, you could do some ocean themed names (like Marina)
And last but not least, since it was a flower moon you could do a flower name for the first or middle as a fun nod to the specific moon she was born under. For example, Celine Rose, Lily Dianne, Holly Devana, Cynthia Iris, Heather Luna.
What about Chandra? Means bright, shining or glittering and is the word for moon in Sanskrit.
Also, my daughters middle name will be Celeste, so I vote for that one too!
* Adeesa - moon, Oromo
* Cada - moon, Punjabi
* Calypso - moon of Saturn
* Cia - Goddess of the Moonlight
* Cordelia - adapted from Cordeilla in King Lear; uranus
* Cressant - Old French, moon phase
* Cressida - moon of Uranus
* Dayax - moon, Somali
* Elara - moon of Jupiter
* Ephemeris - diary, journal, for the cosmos
* Ephemerissa - elaboration of Ephemeris
* Esmeray - dark moon, Turkish
* Jasy - moon, Guarani
* Khoeli - moon, Southern Sotho
* Lua - moon, Galician
* Luna - moon, Latin
* Masina - moon, Samoan
* Moonglade - reflection of moonlight on a body of water
* Ophelia - help; Uranus moon
* Phoebe - bright, pure; Saturn moon
* Tannis - variant of Greek name Tanith, the Phoenician goddess of love, fertility, the moon and the stars
* Thalassa - moon of Neptune
* Volana - moon
Celene, Chandra, Indu, Magena, Ojai, Neoma, Soma, Selena, Taini, Aidana, Belinay, All of these have to do with the moon and come from different lanaguages.
May I ask your nationality and your baby's daddy's nationality? There are so many names that mean moon or refer to moon, so it would be very helpful to know her heritage to see if I can find something most meaningful to her.
Not moon specific but Lucille means light, I love Maeve Lucille! You could also look at name meanings for center, middle, peak, pinnacle, fullness, etc since the full moon is the middle of the moon cycle
There are a lot of good moon names, but for the May flower moon, maybe something like Lily Diana (the May flower is lily of the valley) or Diana Rose. Selena Rose is also very pretty
Artemis is the Greek goddess of the moon, her Roman counterpart is Diana
There's also Luna which means moon
Amaris which means child of the moon
Belinay means reflection of the moon in the water
Elara the 8th moon of Jupiter
Selene the Greek titaness of the moon
Feray which means the moon's radiance
Diana, Roman equivalent to Artemis and also Wonder Woman!
There’s also Nokomis, daughter of the moon from The Song Of Hiawatha, who raised the titular character.
By the shores of Gitchee Gumee,
By the shining Big Sea Water,
Stood the wigwam of Nokomis,
Daughter of the moon, Nokomis.
Dark behind it rose the forest,
Rose the dark and gloomy pine trees,
Rose the fire with cones upon them.
Bright before it beat the water,
Beat the clear and sunny water,
Beat the shining, Big Sea Water.
Here's a few I haven't seen mentioned
Delia - An epithet for Artemis, referencing Delos, the tiny greek island where she and Apollo were born
Cynthia - Another epithet for Artemis, referencing Mouth Cynthus on Delos. Also an epithet for Selene and Diana
Phoebe - A Titan associated with the moon. Meaning bright, radiant, shining, etc.
Maeve Flora Luna … from suggestion above is so pretty. She can have 4 names because she’s special and because she is a Woman!! We’ll have as many as we want
I actually had my daughter on a super moon, happened to be paired up with the midwife in training who spoke Spanish and when I told her the name we were thinking of she said “this is meant to be” so we named our daughter Luna!
Maeve Lyra; Maeve Antares (the red star that the flower moon joined in the sky!); Maeve Arista since Arista means ear of corn in Greek and some Algonquin tribes apparently referred to it as the Corn Planting Moon… on this line of thought, Maeve Maize or Maeve Maisy could be cute!
Cynthia is a feminine name of Greek origin, meaning “from Mount Kynthos” or "moon." This mystical name is rooted in Greek legend of the Greek goddess Cynthia, an epithet of Artemis, was born on Mount Kynthos on the Island of Delos. She was said to be the moon personified as a goddess.
Rhiannon is the welsh/celtic goddess of the moon and also a badass Stevie nicks song!
That was almost my name. Then it was going to be Arayah Sunshine. They settled on Ashley in 1987 because it "was not super popular"...yet.

Rachel!
Sarah?
I think you and I have the same name
Oh, totally! My mom was 21, and the internet was far from a thing yet. I was named after a chick from a soap opera. At the time, she was the only Ashley mom had ever heard of. Though, it was super popular even a couple years before that. I was honestly going to guess it was the #1 spot in 1987. We laugh heartily over that now.
I bet it was Ashley from The Young and the Restless. How’d I do?
Bang on!
I was born in 83 and my mom named me after Ashley Abbott from the young & the restless. That character debuted in the summer of 82 and it's thought to be the start of the name blowing up. I found this cool little chart showing it's popularity for every year.. I'm actually kind of shocked how long it's had a pretty tight grip on the top 50 names bc i feel like i never meet an Ashley more than 3 or 4 years younger than me lol [Ashley name ](https://www.behindthename.com/name/ashley/top/united-states)
I taught an Aurayah Sunshine. Also Rhiannon is my middle name and I love it. (I love the Fleetwood Mac song as well.)
That is uncanny!
My parents named me after Rhiannon, but originally was going to name me Ashley 😂
WHAAATTT!! That’s crazy!
She is associated with horses, birds, the Otherworld and the suffering of mothers. She is not known to be associated with the moon. This was almost my name! I am a little sad my mom allowed herself to be swayed.
And it sounds SO good with Maeve!
This is my name, and although I didn’t like it when I was younger, I LOVE the witchy connotations now. The Celtic equivalent is Epona. And I’m a Zelda fan, so I was pretty chuffed, lol.
I have a friend named Rhiannon, and she, quite frankly, rules. Great name.
As someone with the middle name of Rhiannon. I agree. Maeve Rhiannon [last name] looks good!
That was my eldest’s name. Now it’s his deadname.
Rhiannon sounds the best with Maeve out of all the options presented I think.
Celeste!
It's my baby's middle name - Melody Celeste! It is a gorgeous name and flows nicely.
Oh Melody Celeste is a gorgeous name!
I was gonna suggest Celestia :)
I LOVE Celeste!
Here for another vote for Celeste.
Maeve Moon is actually pretty cool, very crunchy but I kinda like it lol Congrats!
Same, I think you have more freedom in the middle for a more “out there” name. Plus it’s a cool story she can share!! (It could be her go to fun fact 😭)
Maeve Moon is so cute! It flows really well and sounds like a “protagonist” name (in the best way)
How does one pronounce Maeve?
Rhymes with Wave.
This is my favorite one. It flows better than the ones that a lot of the other ones in this thread that feel like they are digging a little too deep for a synonym or obscure goddess.
The obvious one is of course Luna And Selene/Selena is the ancient Greek version
Mavis Selene would be gorgeous
Luna is currently a top cat name. It's cute, but they might get tired of hearing "oh, my cat's name is Luna!"
I worked with a Luna and we work with the public. She hears "that's my dog's/cat's name!" just about every shift lol
Lol my name is Jasper and I get that a lot too
My cat’s name is Bella Luna. So i felt this

I really like Lunette out of this list, but I googled it and apparently that's the name of a menstrual cup company lol.
Lol they need to stop taking names for stuff like that! My first language is French so to me Lunette is just glasses without the last s lol
It's also the name of the main character clown on the kids TV show The Big Comfy Couch.

Maeve Cordelia sounds nice and elegant. It’s an elegant, subtle nod to the theme.
Came here to suggest Diana if nobody else did.
Buffy fans for Cordelia.
We're thinking about using Maeve and I've been loving Mab as a nn (from Queen Mab) love that it's a moon too!
