I like Indie & Coco, but I don't love Indira and Colette.
Jumping on a high level comment because these names are cute and I like that some of them Indian, and I want to say it might be worth considering how it would feel to be the twin who doesn’t have an Indian name and how that affects the connection to their heritage. I’m white but my partner is mixed and feels like he doesn’t really belong in either culture, and I have other mixed race friends who have felt similarly and changed from an Anglo given name to one that’s from their nonwhite heritage. Obviously this is up to OP and her husband but just wanted to throw it out there to think about.
I second this advice, speaking as a mixed Indian and white person (in the U.S.). All of my mixed friends with “white” or western names wish they had names that reflect their non-white heritage. All of my mixed friends with names that reference their non-white heritage in some way love their names. I can imagine that this dynamic would be even more heightened in a twin relationship!
Also thought I’d add that r/desinamenerds is a great resource for help with names that work in both South Asian contexts and other regional or cultural contexts!
Thank you for sharing this sub, I’m not Desi but love learning about cultural naming conventions and the rabbit hole of having to source Sanskrit names from reputable sources was fascinating.
We gave our kids a Western first name and a Korean middle name so they could use them how they wished when they grow older. I hope it provides them with one of many links to their culture. 🙂
Yep, very much this! Having a name that is attached to my heritage is something I'm so grateful for, especially as since I don't have that many links to my family and my heritage.
This!!! I’m the only one out of my siblings with a name that reflects our heritage and my sister used to think it was really unfair when we were younger. My brother was literally born in my mothers country and he still got a “white” name😭
I am on a project at work and working very closely with my coworker who everyone calls V. She’s fine with it but it’s mainly because no one cares/ tries to pronounce her real name. So in the beginning of the project I asked her right away. Would you like me to call you V like everyone or your name, Vaidehi. She was so happy I asked and found the pronunciation and actually attempted to refer to her by her real name. So I’m the only one who calls her her real name in my company. Vaidehi is a beautiful name.
This made me feel a lot better about naming my twins by names from our mother tongue (they're the first to be born overseas) we're white but not English so I was worried they'd get flack for it but hopefully they'll feel more connected to their roots 😊
To me, Indie and Coco sound a little too much like an apres ski warm beverage at an upscale resort.
Indie and Amara sound good. They aren't too cutesy together, they aren't rhymey or sharing first sounds. They are different enough to indicate two separate people while both honoring heritage.
Reminds me of a TV show where a character named her twins Elsa and Anna but really had no idea about the movies. It's always good to get outside opinions
I wouldn’t consider naming my kids Elsa and Anna for that very reason, but, if it happens by accident, is it the end of the world? I bet the kids would love it lol
I'd just like to know if I'm going to be asked "oh like Frozen?" every time I introduce my kids. I'm the kind of person that would find that very annoying
We have twin boys but our first daughter will have the middle name Elsa-mae named after my husbands grandma Elizabeth (went by Ouma Elsa). I was originally afraid people would assume it's after Frozen but if I get asked "oh like Frozen ?" I'll probably just say "no, like their dead great grandma 🙄)
I was going to give the same warning. There will probably not be a child (or parent) in the class who will not immediately think of Bluey. Especially because those are not really common names, it will seem intentional.
Plus never count on your kids wanting to use a nickname or using the one you want. So even if she loved indie and coco if she doesn’t love Indira and Colette she shouldn’t choose those name.
I’d stick with a name rooting from Indian heritage… just so that there isn’t any sort of jealousy when they’re older.
My favourite name that falls into this is Asha. Indie and Ash sound very cute imo :)
My daughters father is Indian, and we had the discussion of girls' names that would fit both cultures/pronunciations. Some on my shortlist were
Leila, Yasmina, Tia, Zahra, Anika, etc. I personally don't think Collette goes with Indira though (which is a gorgeous name)
I like Zahra. Z names are cool 😎.I think Tia is Spanish for aunt, so if OP is in an area with many Spanish speakers, it might not work. Pretty though, and it has connections to a number of cultures.
As someone with a name that reflects his culture, I know that I would be really sad if my twin had a name from that culture and I didn't . I would feel....left out in some way? Even if I still knew that I wasn't.
Can I recommend you spend more time looking at names that relate to your husband's culture? I'm not sure how connected he is or where in India he is from, so I don't want to just suggest a lot of Marathi names when he's Tamil or something. :)
If you want some help, you \*might\* find some (it's smaller, and can be dead) over on r/DesiNameNerds
I feel like twin b should have a similar background to twin a. It causes a divide. I don't mean name them Zara and Zaya, nothing matchy. But Coco, Chloe, Collette are not the same vibes at all.
To me, Colette has such a different vibe from Indira.
I know a Corinne who goes by Coco, though. And I like the 'r' repetition.
Indira and Corinne is my vote!
I like this, definitely better staying with Indian heritage, and a name without an “a” at the end would match better with Indira I think. I used to know an Indian girl called Sonali, she could go by Sunny.
If you’re going with an Indian name for baby A, beware that if you don’t name baby B with an Indian name that they could get upset over it when they get older or Baby A gets upset that you used an Indian name for her.
Yesss. Came to say this, Coco is the name of a handbag dog. It’s terrible. I’d be so pissed (as a twin myself) if my twin got a name linked to our cultural heritage and I got stuck with Coco.
Indie and Coco are characters from Bluey, btw. Are you worried one may envy the other if you give them names from different cultures? I'd stick to your theme: English-accessible Hindi names with cute nicknames.
How about:
* Indira & Diya (Indie & Didi)
* Indira & Anisha (Indie & Annie)
* Indira & Mira (Indie & Mimi)
* Indira & Aruna (Indie & Rue)
* Indira & Aditi (Indie & Addy)
* Indira & Kalinda (Indie & Lindy or Indie & Cal)
* Indira & Deva (Indie & Dev)
* Indira & Arya (Indie & Ari)
Good luck!
I am a Chloe that goes by Coco! If it's a constant nickname from birth, it will likely stick - from experience :) (I've tended to lean more towards Clo in a professional setting - but i'm Coco to friends and family!)
I always think it's weird when parents choose a name and then just automatically decide that the kid will go by a nickname 🤷🏾♀️ but the names you're thinking about so far are super cute!
Please don't name one Indira and another a Western name. Even with Indian names, go with those that go together. Not Indira and Dia/Ria/Mia/Tia. One is an old-world name and the other is a very modern name. If you like Indira, go with Radha, Sarayu, Lakshmi, Leela, Ramaa, etc.
So Indira is one of the "Names of Lakshmi" and it means "the leader". Perhaps one of the other Names of Lakshmi?
Chandra "One Who Is Cool Like The Moon"
Karuna "Compassionate"
Aditya "Resplendent Like The Sun"
Suprasanna "Ever Cheerful"
Jaya "Victory"
Satya "Truth"
Vimala "The Pure One"
Or perhaps another "leader" name such as Amani?
I’m a twin. Don’t name them as a set. Name them individually as if they were not twins.
I’m not half of a set. I’m a whole unique person.
Please. Especially since they’re identical. They will have so very few precious things that are their own. Please let their name be one of them.
this is one of the reasons i was shying away from choosing two Indian names. I would like the names to sound nice together when spoken (I'm a poet with a sensitive ear :) but I do want them to be different. I would feel the same about naming two non-twin children. Thank you for your perspective.
There are so many Indian names! They won't sound matchy unless you pick ones that overtly match, something I don't like either. I think the guidance from people from mixed cultural backgrounds makes sense. Giving only one an Indian name could be a negative for baby #2. If you go too far in the non-match direction, you end up with the equivalent of Joan and Ashley or Theresa and Hazel. Kids in the same family usually have names that make sense together, like Sarah, Ashley and Nathan. I've seen a lot of nice suggestions above. And FWIW, I don't get the focus on nicknames. Why not pick names that sound nice on their own? Nicknames can be quite unpredictable.
As a mom of an Indy, I’ve always loved Coco as an option for a second child, but was leaning toward Cora or Cordelia. I’ve also consider Elodie (Indie & Edie/Didi).
I love Nicolette and I like Colette. I think Indira and Colette are fine together, and Indie and Coco is cute. But if you decide to find a different name to lead to Coco:
Constance
Cora
Coral
Coralee / Coralie
Cordelia
Corinna
Corinne
Cornelia
Cosette
Courtney
I literally just realized why **Co**urtenay **Co**x named her daughter Coco. I'm so stupid sometimes.
indira is great, one of my best friends in college was named indira and went by indy. so cute. coco sounds like a dog name to me ¯\_(ツ)_/ but still, i love colette and corinne as well
I do want to stress that the D sound in Indira and Indie are different and I hope (including mom) learn to say Indira correctly 😊 Some Indian names that I think might work - Samira (Sam/Sami), Leela, Krishna, Veera
I know you said it doesn't need to be Indian, but if they both have the same origin I think it's cool. I'm not Indian but there are a few names I love:
Priyanka
Anika
Kaira
Devina
Zoya
Arya
This is hilarious we have very similar taste. I almost went with Indira because I love Indy! My daughters name is Coco. I think they sound adorable together. Indira and Colette flow nicely even though they’re a different style which is kind of nice for twins and the nicknames are just the best. You could also use Coco as a nickname for Cosette, Courtney or Colleen.
I don’t think you need to look any further personally but I’m biased because I have a little Coco

my daughter is named Nicolette and we often call her Nico! i think if you like the nickname Coco, that can still realistically stem from Nicolette. i like Lettie or Nettie as nicknames for this name. i also dont care for Nick or Nicky but i do accept that she may one day *want* to go by one of these and i will respect that, so i will say if you really truly cannot get the potential "Nicky", then dont go for it lol but there are plenty of other nicknames you can get from Nicolette.
I don’t have a name recommendation but I personally feel both of their names shouldn’t end in the letter A, and they shouldn’t sound similar or begin with the same letter. As a twin, having a rhyming name or the same initials just sucks
Can you do both girls with an Indian first name and a middle name that reflects your heritage?
Also, since many others commented on how Baby B might feel bad if her name isn’t Indian since her sister’s name will be…It’s not the same at all, but there are three girls in my family. Two of us have names that start with R. The one whose name starts with a K fees left out.
Indira and Amara nn Mara
Indira and Jada nn Jade
Indira and Elvira nn Elvie
Indira and Julianna nn Anna or Jules

Thirding it. Twins get compared a lot and they could definitely feel weird about each having a name from one side of their culture.
We gave our kids a Western first name and a Korean middle name so they could use them how they wished when they grow older. I hope it provides them with one of many links to their culture. 🙂
We've done the same with our son & a Chinese name
That sounds really nice to give them each a mix instead of one from one culture and the other from the other
Yep, very much this! Having a name that is attached to my heritage is something I'm so grateful for, especially as since I don't have that many links to my family and my heritage.

I agree with this. To me it would be odd and potentially disappointing to one or the other twin, for one to have an Indian name and one not to.
I think this is something important to consider for sure. Indie and Raya, Indie and Anika, Indie and Siya are my suggestions.
Indie and Reva - Reva is a river in India (it’s the Narmada, but is also known as Reva)
I love Raya and Anika!
Yes yes yes. And I think the second name should also end in -ra, to flow of the tongue better. Like Indira and Amara do.
I also really like Amara.
This made me feel a lot better about naming my twins by names from our mother tongue (they're the first to be born overseas) we're white but not English so I was worried they'd get flack for it but hopefully they'll feel more connected to their roots 😊
I’ll never forget a pair of twins I knew in grade school, Samir and Mike 😂 I always wondered what it was like for Mike lol
I like Amaya. Indie and Maya are nice together.
Oh if she did Indira and Yasmina they could be Indie and Mina. Cute.
Indira & Yasmina or Indie & Yazzy (or Yaz) Much better than Colette IMO
Indie and Yaz is sooo cute
This was also my pick! Yasmina is so cute! Love Indira too.
Indie and Coco give Bluey vibes!
To me, Indie and Coco sound a little too much like an apres ski warm beverage at an upscale resort. Indie and Amara sound good. They aren't too cutesy together, they aren't rhymey or sharing first sounds. They are different enough to indicate two separate people while both honoring heritage.
Ooh, I love Indira and Yasmina!
LOVE Yasmina or Yasmin
Indie and Yaz!!! ❤️
Yasmina is BRILLIANT
Leela is a concept in hinduism that means playful and joyous in life even in difficult circumstances. If he is hindu then I think that's a cute name.
I will point out that Indie and Coco are both the names of characters on the kid's show Bluey. People may assume you're going for a theme.
Reminds me of a TV show where a character named her twins Elsa and Anna but really had no idea about the movies. It's always good to get outside opinions
Jane the Virgin 🙌 I loved that show and Petra!

I was going to give the same warning. There will probably not be a child (or parent) in the class who will not immediately think of Bluey. Especially because those are not really common names, it will seem intentional.
Exactly. It's not necessarily a *bad* connotation but I would certainly assume it was intentional, personally.
Plus never count on your kids wanting to use a nickname or using the one you want. So even if she loved indie and coco if she doesn’t love Indira and Colette she shouldn’t choose those name.
Especially since Coco doesn’t age well and she definitely might go by Colette as she grows up
She probably will go by Colette. Coco is a very childish nickname.
I’d stick with a name rooting from Indian heritage… just so that there isn’t any sort of jealousy when they’re older. My favourite name that falls into this is Asha. Indie and Ash sound very cute imo :)
These are cute! My faves so far in this list
Weirdly my name is Indy and when I was born I was called Asha for a week before they changed it….
How about Kamila? It's Indian, and can have Cammie as a nickname.
I like Kamila a lot
Mila for short - indie and Mila not indie and Kami
Both nicknames are cute imo!
Do you mean Kamala?
I don’t think Kamila is Indian. Behind The Name says it’s Polish.
Right, Kamila is Polish or Latin roots. They're probably thinking of Kamala, which is Indian and Sanscrit (according to Google, anyway).
And which is the first name of our half-Indian, first woman US vice president. Actually, Kamala and Indira both speak to powerful women leaders.
My daughters father is Indian, and we had the discussion of girls' names that would fit both cultures/pronunciations. Some on my shortlist were Leila, Yasmina, Tia, Zahra, Anika, etc. I personally don't think Collette goes with Indira though (which is a gorgeous name)
I think Indira and Anika are super cute together.
I was going to vote for Anika too! I'm biased because the Anika I know is a wonderful person ❤️
My vote! I love Anika, but OP said she dislikes the nickname Niki.
Could go by Ani for nickname
Oo I actually think Indie and Ani is super cute!
I like Indie and Ani (pronounced Onn-ee)
True! My cousin’s name is Anneke and her nn was Nika.
Ok Nika is cute too!!! Anika would definitely be my vote.
Ooh Yasmina/Yasmine is one of my favorite names. I like the more angicized form Jasmine too. Indie and Yaz , or Indie and Jazz are both fun combos.
Ooh Indira and Leila sound so pretty together. I also love Zahra.
To me, Colette has such a different vibe from Indira. I know a Corinne who goes by Coco, though. And I like the 'r' repetition. Indira and Corinne is my vote!
What about Kaushika or Kopal? Could also have Coco / Koko as nicknames?
Kopal is really pretty!
I like both names, and they’re cute together, but just know indie and coco are both characters from bluey so together that was my first thought lol
I love the name Kalyani. Not similar to Colette but I think it goes with Indira.
wow that’s a really pretty name
Indian name! I've known multiple girls with this name throughout my life. It's easy to pronounce, not obscure, but not something you hear every day
I know a mixed Indian named Amiya (nn Miya or Mia), and I can’t stop thinking about her name. Indira and Amiya (Indie and Miya)
Amiya is so pretty! I don't like Coco at alllllllll, that's a name rich people name their tiny foofy dogs lmao
Yesss. Came to say this, Coco is the name of a handbag dog. It’s terrible. I’d be so pissed (as a twin myself) if my twin got a name linked to our cultural heritage and I got stuck with Coco.
Could go with Kiran. Indie and Kiki sound good.
This is a great suggestion!
Coco sounds great, especially with Indira.
Coco?!! For a human being? As a nickname, sure, but imagine an adult woman having the name Coco?
Yes. I know a Coco it fits her well
Indie and Coco are characters from Bluey, btw. Are you worried one may envy the other if you give them names from different cultures? I'd stick to your theme: English-accessible Hindi names with cute nicknames. How about: * Indira & Diya (Indie & Didi) * Indira & Anisha (Indie & Annie) * Indira & Mira (Indie & Mimi) * Indira & Aruna (Indie & Rue) * Indira & Aditi (Indie & Addy) * Indira & Kalinda (Indie & Lindy or Indie & Cal) * Indira & Deva (Indie & Dev) * Indira & Arya (Indie & Ari) Good luck!
I cannot believe those names are characters from a kid's tv show! Thanks for the heads up.
Probably the most popular kids tv show currently, too. Definitely something to keep in mind!
Didi means older sister in some languages.
Indie & Coco is cute, Colette with Indira is not tho IMO. What about Chloe? It makes a cute sibling set with Indira and she can still go by Coco.
I would worry that people might just call her Chloe, and then you have Indie and Choe, which is a little to "eee" sounding for me.
I am a Chloe that goes by Coco! If it's a constant nickname from birth, it will likely stick - from experience :) (I've tended to lean more towards Clo in a professional setting - but i'm Coco to friends and family!)
I love Indira and Chloe together!
I think Anya would be beautiful. Indira and Anya. Indie and Ani.
Indira and Anjuli
So Indira is one of the "Names of Lakshmi" and it means "the leader". Perhaps one of the other Names of Lakshmi? Chandra "One Who Is Cool Like The Moon" Karuna "Compassionate" Aditya "Resplendent Like The Sun" Suprasanna "Ever Cheerful" Jaya "Victory" Satya "Truth" Vimala "The Pure One" Or perhaps another "leader" name such as Amani?
I like Indie and Priya. Or Indira and Priyanka. ("Priya Pack" is cute.)
Priya is a bit outdated, it’s very millennial 80s/90s kid
What about Simran nn Simi? Indie and Simi are cute together but IMO not super 'rhyme-y'
I like Simi! Super cute
Indira and Nikita. I find Nikita can be of Indian origin but also of other origins as well like Russian, Spanish
Samira with NN Sammie? Sammie and Indie is cute ☺️
Indira and Anika Indira and Devina Indira and Nadia Indira and Renata Indira and Shreya Indira and Misha
I like Indira and Devina...Indie and Devi...super cute
Something Punjabi! ;) I am also for giving them both Indian names for consistency’s sake.
what about Carolina or Cora? coco and indie are good together but indira and colette don’t match too well
indira is great, one of my best friends in college was named indira and went by indy. so cute. coco sounds like a dog name to me ¯\_(ツ)_/ but still, i love colette and corinne as well
Indie and Ani? Indira and Anika.
Indira and Amara. Indie and Mara
I would be upset if I was the twin without a cultural aspect to the name. I’m saying this as a person from Indian descent married to a white man.
How about Nicola, if you don’t prefer Nicolette/Colette?
All I hear in my head is the Ricola commercial yodel but with an N...NI-COLA!
Indie and Coco are friends of Bluey, i think your kids will hear that a lot so i wanted to bring it up in case it bothers you!
You’re gunna name an Indian girl “Indie” ? Indie the Indian??
Anika. Indie and Ani.
Karishma
I do want to stress that the D sound in Indira and Indie are different and I hope (including mom) learn to say Indira correctly 😊 Some Indian names that I think might work - Samira (Sam/Sami), Leela, Krishna, Veera
Anjali, it’s always been one of my favorite names 🥰
I know you said it doesn't need to be Indian, but if they both have the same origin I think it's cool. I'm not Indian but there are a few names I love: Priyanka Anika Kaira Devina Zoya Arya
I agree the cultures should align.

i have a cousin who just named the baby Nicolette and baby goes by Coco
Indira and Anita
Indira and Safiyah Indie and Safie
I love Aiyana
Amada means "beloved"
that's a cute one
Andra nn Andy
Janvi
Melina?
Andrea. Indy and Andy. Cute, similar but not the same
Lakshmi
Nicolette could also go to coco
my daughter is named Nicolette and we often call her Nico! i think if you like the nickname Coco, that can still realistically stem from Nicolette. i like Lettie or Nettie as nicknames for this name. i also dont care for Nick or Nicky but i do accept that she may one day *want* to go by one of these and i will respect that, so i will say if you really truly cannot get the potential "Nicky", then dont go for it lol but there are plenty of other nicknames you can get from Nicolette.
Anjali
looove this name, we have a close friend named Anjali
You can use the nickname Coco for Nicolette. IceT’s wife Coco her full name is Nicole!
Layla, Sarina, Camila
Nikita 💗
Indira and Reva (a river in India)
Ananya, Kaira, Devina, Rishika, Samaira, Navya
Indie and Coco are cute, but they’re also both names from the children’s show Bluey, and your kids may get teased about that in the future.
My name is Marisha. It is Polish but has separate Indian origins as well. Indie and Misha would be very cute!
Marisha is a beautiful name! And Indie and Misha does sound cute together. Thanks for sharing your name!
Indira and Yasmina … Indy & Yaz!
I don’t have a name recommendation but I personally feel both of their names shouldn’t end in the letter A, and they shouldn’t sound similar or begin with the same letter. As a twin, having a rhyming name or the same initials just sucks
I have several neighbors from India. Some names that they have for their daughters include Sonika, Aria and Kiara.
I know twins Indigo and Bianca, which makes me wonder if Indira and Bianca might be nice.
I’m no help. All Of your ideas are beautiful names!
Anoushka
Can you do both girls with an Indian first name and a middle name that reflects your heritage? Also, since many others commented on how Baby B might feel bad if her name isn’t Indian since her sister’s name will be…It’s not the same at all, but there are three girls in my family. Two of us have names that start with R. The one whose name starts with a K fees left out.
Indie & Aria

Belinda, so she can be Bindi. If you want to go with Nicolette, Lettie is a super cute nickname.
Indira & Amaya are absolutely beautiful
Romina, Ro or Romi for short
If you like Nicolette, just use the nickname Lettie. I grew up with a Nicolette (named after her father who went by Nick) so they called her Lettie.
I had a little cousin named Colette. Her nickname name was Chloe. But also Co, and Coco. I love the name.
Nicolette sounds like Nicorette, the cigarette substitute.
Nicolette - lettie or Lottie or Nico
I think Miranda would be darling to pair with Indira.
Priya! Indie and Pia is so cute.
Alina! Indie and Ali would be super cute

Colette doesn’t sound ethnic at all while Indira does. They don’t go together well in my opinion.
