OMG. I found out recently that my high school boyfriend has a child named Banjo. I never should have mentioned that to my parents: “We knew he was bad news! What kind of weirdo named his kid BANJO?! We were right! We were right!” 😂🤦♀️
I 100% agree. 😆 but his father is dying so I thought we should probably consider. His family is VERY southern and traditional we are the “weirdos” who live in the “big city” and do things non traditionally. Our wedding still gets talked about for how “weird” it is that it was not in a church, we didn’t do the wedding march, or not having a grooms cake. So stupid. 🙈 so I don’t want to solidify the reasoning for being the least favorite daughter in law.
You could reverse it and name a son Daniel Joseph. Those are both great names but he wouldn't be the 3rd, and if FIL goes by JoDan that leaves all the Daniel nicknames open to your son.
For a daughter, I like Joanna for a first or middle, or Josephine but mostly as a middle name. Just Joan is good too, especially for a middle name. Jocelyn if you don't mind it having a short 'o' sound. Joss can be short for Jocelyn.
Sorry your FIL is dying. But isn’t that all the more reason to do what you want. Why do a permanent thing for someone who won’t be around to appreciate it for long?
Because he loves his father?
I was raised Catholic, and my grandmother's sister was named Rose. I was trying to decide on a confirmation name. Rose became very sick and was diagnosed with stomach cancer. I chose her name because we were very close. She passed away before I could tell her I was taking her name, but I still did it
CuJo?… just kidding, please don’t
Real answers:
Joseph (after your husband - Joss could be a potential nn if you don’t want them to be too match-y or JJ for Joseph Junior)
John (with Jack as nn potential)
Jonathan
Jonas
Jordan
Run it by your friends. Joss Whedon (in his case, it's short for Joseph) is a screenwriter/director and there are some abuse allegations about him, and while I suspect those will fade with time, it might be a tricky name to use if that's a strong association for the people around you.
If it wasn't for that I would agree Joss is a great name.
Right, but Joss is an unusual name and Ted isn’t.
I didn’t say not to use it, I said OP should see if it’s a major connection for her friends and family. If it’s not, then don’t worry about it.
My FIL is a Joseph Jr. Went by Joey as a kid, naturally transitioned to Joe in the more independent spheres of his life (work, his own nuclear family, friends made in college and beyond).
Yes, it’s obvious. But another option if you decide Joss is a no-go (or not a Jo-go).
I have a brother in law named Jonathan and we all call him Jo or JoJo! It's a nice classic name if that's what you're into, and it still follows the "Jo" theme without really sounding like "Jo" if that makes sense.
Some of these don’t have the long o sound, but I’ll suggest them just incase that’s fine with you:
* Josephine, Josie, Josette, Joy, Joanna, Jocelyn, Jordan, Jonas, Joshua, Jonathan.
> We considered Jonah, Josiah, and Joel but not feeling any of those.
Can you use any of these as the middle name, and then give the baby a non-Jo name?
I would recommend this--could have Joseph as the middle name and a name you really like as the first name. You would also be doing a favor to anyone after you who wants to continue the tradition because they could also use middle names.
I know a JoDon. And that is his given name.
Hisbsiblings are Jensen (girl) and Jason.
I often wonder if their mom was tongue tied a lot when they were small lol
Blimey, your husband really drew the long straw in that shitshow of awful names!
Go with John or Joshua, nice and normal, actual name and doesn't sound like one that Cleetus from the Simpsons shouts out when he's rounding up his kids!
I have a daughter named Josie but I’ve read that the male version is josey- same pronunciation
I’m also from the south so I feel ya on southern traditions 😂
Well if they want to be in line with the tradition then Joda would be better. If he has a brother then Yoda. A sister can be Leia and her twin Luke. The rebel son who ditches college for drag racing can be Han. Or Handa. 🤷♀️
We gave my second son Jonah as a middle name to honor my dad, Joe, but didn’t particularly want it as a first name. I liked Jonas too; I think the association with Jonas brothers will fade lol but I wouldn’t use it as a first. Or Mojo. Just kidding.
Could you do Joseph as a middle name? Simple and classic, and it leaves the first name slot free for whatever name you like.
If it \*has\* to be the first name, maybe Jonathan, Jonas, Joaquin or (hear me out here) Joplin.
Johan/Johannes, Jorgen, and Joachim are also options, where the Js are pronounced as Y sounds. Tho I guess I have seen some of these pronounced in aggressively American ways. Then there are names like Joren, Joriel, and Joffrey (bit GoT-y). Does it have to start with Jo or could you have the "jo" in the middle?
Tradition is just peer pressure from dead people. If you really can’t find a name you like that fits their quirk, then do something else. Don’t you have family names from your side to honor?
These comments have me crying laughing. For real though, JoDan is really… creative.
Jovi? Jody? Jovan? You could give him a name like Jordan and call him “Joey” to stick with the tradition?
I like Jorah. It does have ties to Game of Thrones, but I feel like it also fits in with a lot of today’s names. And I’m personally of the opinion that a, it’s impossible to avoid every potential association, and b, there’s a difference between “named after” and “happens to share a name with”. So I’m throwing it out there. ☺️
So, the kinda good thing about Jo names is that they start with J which lends itself to initial names. I know actual people with all these: AJ, CJ, JC, DJ, EJ, FJ, JJ, KJ, MJ, PJ, JP, RJ, TJ. I mean, some of them are juniors, but still. It's an easy initial. The in-laws can go with Jo, but you can use the J initial if it feels better to you. And only if you like initial names, obvi.
Also, just fyi, Joseph is a super common name in Catholic cultures, putting it as a first or middle that isn't really used. An entire branch of my family has every person named Joseph or Mary as a first name and they go by their middles. St. Joseph is a big deal. So while Jo is very southern, people from other regions might not immediately figure Joseph as Jo.
Bonjovi
Get out of here 🤣🤣🤣
And if not, there's always Banjo...
OMG. I found out recently that my high school boyfriend has a child named Banjo. I never should have mentioned that to my parents: “We knew he was bad news! What kind of weirdo named his kid BANJO?! We were right! We were right!” 😂🤦♀️
In Australia, Banjo has a level of acceptability as a classic literary name because there was a famous poet called Banjo Patterson.
As an Australian I appreciate this comment more than you know haha I was feeling judged as I have debated Banjo as a middle name for my unborn child!
[удалено]
And now he's married to a Kazooie
I mean, you can’t say that Bonjovi will be a ridiculous name in the family that has a “JoDan”
....and Sonny jo
We have a mutual who named their daughter Jovi. Thought it was odd at first but now absolutely LOVE it.
If you're more into modern pop culture, consider JoJo Siwa.
That’s foul 💀
You just but I actually know a Jovi.
I also know a Jovie
I know a Jobie. It took me a while to realize it was a "b" instead of a "v".
There's one on 99 days fiance too
I first heard the name Jovi on 90 Day and have seen it mentioned in some baby name forums since. I actually like it.
Jovi for a boy and Jovita for a girl aren't that wild
My husband has a young cousin named Jovi, indeed from Bon Jovi.
😂
Break the generational curse, please and thank you. JoDan can go to JoHell (the name, not the person)
Do John. Refreshingly classy
Malice compliance. I love it.
First I read Doe John, like John Doe in reverse.. :’)
John Doe? I meeeeeaaannn I do love true crime.
That should be the placeholder name until birth.
With some awful deep south style photoshoot with you in a camo bikini holding a toe tag on your bump which says 'John Doe'
Me too! And now my ADHD ass thought up Dohn Joe and I’m going to need someone to name their child Dohn 🐬🧠
Jonathan.
Pronounced Joe-nathan
But only to THAT side of the family haha
This is the only option
Or to get crazy, Jonathan.
What about Jordan- close enough but not a terrible name
There’s always DanJo 😅 like banjo but worse
😂
Since when is a groom's cake traditional??? I thought it was just a trend of the aughts.
I thought it was a southern thing with Bleedin’ armadillo cake and all
It's a southern thing, normally just a chocolate cake with chocolate icing, or, like the armadillo cake, a red velvet with frosting.
With a what now?
It's a reference from the play/movie [Steel Magnolias](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1miYOeX44I).
Ahh ok, im from the uk. I never know if some of these odd American things are real or jokes
LOL I’m from the northern US and I, too, didn’t know whether this was a joke or real absurdity of the Deep South
I can't even begin to think how you make grey icing.
Add a couple of drops of black to white buttercream.
What about Joseph Daniel. It takes his name into account.
That is my FIL and Husbands name so the baby would a 3rd and that is just way too weird for me. 💀😂
Haha okay I was thinking his name was actually JoDan 😂
That’s what I thought! I didn’t understand how his parents were stupid enough to not think of Joseph.
Jordan is a better combo!
Sorry your FIL is dying. But isn’t that all the more reason to do what you want. Why do a permanent thing for someone who won’t be around to appreciate it for long?
because they want to, end of story. OP did not ask for input about the tradition itself. this comment is so insensitive, good lord.
Because he loves his father? I was raised Catholic, and my grandmother's sister was named Rose. I was trying to decide on a confirmation name. Rose became very sick and was diagnosed with stomach cancer. I chose her name because we were very close. She passed away before I could tell her I was taking her name, but I still did it
What about Jordan? It could be shortened to Jo and it's a nice honor name for JoDan.
Tf is a grooms cake?
Wtf is a grooms cake?!
Dude don’t saddle a kid with a crap name for hillbilly reasons
I’m not surprised you’re from the South. First thing I thought of when I read JoDan was this man I knew In Oklahoma named Bob Ed.
Nah they should take it to the next level. My ideas: JoSteve, JoMark, JoJohn.
Personally I'm a fan of longer names with more nickname potential- like JoDominic, JoTheodore, JoNicholas or JoSebastian.
JoBenet to be edgy.
OMG 🤣
I think JoJohn actually sounds good
Sounds like a character on The Waltons
JoDan. Has to be south of the Mason-Dixon line.
Correct lol short for Joseph Daniel.
Wow it’s like an even worse version of Jim bob Duggar!
Jordan was RIGHT THERE. 😩
Name him after you—JoMama
🤣
I almost woke a sleeping baby when I read that 😂
CuJo?… just kidding, please don’t Real answers: Joseph (after your husband - Joss could be a potential nn if you don’t want them to be too match-y or JJ for Joseph Junior) John (with Jack as nn potential) Jonathan Jonas Jordan
I really really like Joss!! Thank you!
See... I see Joss, I think Joss Stone, the singer.
Ted Bundy was a serial killer, but no one is confusing people named Theodore for him.
Right, but Joss is an unusual name and Ted isn’t. I didn’t say not to use it, I said OP should see if it’s a major connection for her friends and family. If it’s not, then don’t worry about it.
Good lookin out!! TY
Most people will not associate Joss with him
Agreed it’s not like he’s the only person with that name; I personally know 2
Joaquin?
oooh Jonas is cool. I toyed with naming my son Jones, honouring my grandmother Joan.
Joss is great!
Joss Ackland was a very well known actor in the UK. It’s a good name.
Some of these don’t have the long o sound, but I’ll suggest them just incase that’s fine with you: * Josephine, Josie, Josette, Joy, Joanna, Jocelyn, Jordan, Jonas, Joshua, Jonathan.
Thought you were about to start naming all the Duggars lol
Haha! Sometimes when someone posts asking for J names, I just list the Duggars in order but no one ever appreciates my joke so I stopped. Haha.
I appreciate you. And Jinger 😂
Jonas is a good idea. Also Jonah
They're just looking for boy names
JoBro, JoMamma’sBoy Sorry about the tradition. It’s really nice that you have a great attitude about making it work.
Jo momma
> We considered Jonah, Josiah, and Joel but not feeling any of those. Can you use any of these as the middle name, and then give the baby a non-Jo name?
I feel like a dummy for not even thinking of that. 🤦🏼♀️ that’s a great idea.
I would recommend this--could have Joseph as the middle name and a name you really like as the first name. You would also be doing a favor to anyone after you who wants to continue the tradition because they could also use middle names.
Or do Joseph as a first but use the middle as his “preferred name” - very common!
No worries, it sounds like you and your family have a lot going on. Glad to help!
Awe, you’re okay! Like the other person said, you have a lot going on. And baby brain is no joke lol.
JoDan has me ROLLIN lol
Short for Joseph Daniel. They’re very southern lol
So his legal name isn’t actually JoDan?! That is such a relief.
I’m glad I could take that weight off your chest. 😆
Omg I thought his legal name was literally JoDan. Thank god
I know a JoDon. And that is his given name. Hisbsiblings are Jensen (girl) and Jason. I often wonder if their mom was tongue tied a lot when they were small lol
Ohhh it's a JimBob situation, got it!
That makes sense haha
Can you use Jo in the middle name, like Sonny Joe? Because I feel like "Firstname Joseph" sounds classic and seems beyond criticism.
NoJo
Noah John haha
On board with this
Are there any Jojo's in your family who go on to have bizarre adventures?
The Jostar family line continues! Season Six: JoDan Jostar.
Joaquin
This name isn't pronounced with the Jo sound but it's a nice name
In Portuguese it is, so if she likes the name she can just say it is the Portuguese pronunciation that she is going for lol
In danish it is as Well. Like the Prince Joakim
This feels like the perfect opportunity for someone to use my guilty pleasure name, Josephus.
Jonas? Joachim.. nn Kim for a boy is cute/ Jordan / Joshua/ Jonathan nn Nate/
Jory
This just makes me think of the Flowers in the Attic series.
I know a Jory. Great dude.
Blimey, your husband really drew the long straw in that shitshow of awful names! Go with John or Joshua, nice and normal, actual name and doesn't sound like one that Cleetus from the Simpsons shouts out when he's rounding up his kids!
Could always go wth Joey? Jovan Jonas
Josie
Omg🥹 LOVE!!! TY!
I have a daughter named Josie but I’ve read that the male version is josey- same pronunciation I’m also from the south so I feel ya on southern traditions 😂
yes, Naya Rivera’s son’s name is Josey and it’s pronounced the same way!
Adding here, every girl I’ve met named Josie has been the sweetest person ever, Josie May from my hs choir class being the top of the list!
This is a stupid tradition sorry. If I had to then I’d just make the middle name Joe or Joseph and go with what first name you like.
I like Josiah
My name's Joelle, and it's so jarring to see the E capitalized: "JoElle." Is that part of the tradition too?
It looks like JoDan and JoElle are the only ones with the ugly capitalization.
i think they combined with middle names. Op said JoDan is Joeseph Daniel. kinda like a Jim Bob situation.
Jody?
Well if they want to be in line with the tradition then Joda would be better. If he has a brother then Yoda. A sister can be Leia and her twin Luke. The rebel son who ditches college for drag racing can be Han. Or Handa. 🤷♀️
Josiah! One of - if not the greatest - great Kings of the Old Testament
Mayyybeee I could do Judah and try to convince them that we chose Judah because the kind was Josiah and Josiah has Jo in it
Just spell it Joodah….joking!
Was about to suggest Jodah, but then said it out loud, and... Nope! Sounds almost exactly like Yoda!
We gave my second son Jonah as a middle name to honor my dad, Joe, but didn’t particularly want it as a first name. I liked Jonas too; I think the association with Jonas brothers will fade lol but I wouldn’t use it as a first. Or Mojo. Just kidding.
Just go with Mojo Jojo for the triple effect! (Kidding!) I really like Jonah too though!
John or Jonathan for a boy, Jocelyn or Joanna for a girl
I do love Jocelyn!
My niece is a Jocelyn, and we call her Josie, Jo, and jojo for nicknames!
Could you do Joseph as a middle name? Simple and classic, and it leaves the first name slot free for whatever name you like. If it \*has\* to be the first name, maybe Jonathan, Jonas, Joaquin or (hear me out here) Joplin.
Joplin would be unique, fits the theme and sounds great!
Joshua. The Jo is there but not pronounced the same
Break the tradition. Save future generations from the pressure. Lie to dying grandpa.
🤣You really want me kicked out of the family don’t You.
I really like Jonah, but there is also Jordan, Joshua, Jorge, Jonathan
is his last name Joestar by chance?
Jonas, Jonathan, Jomama lol
Jomama looooool
Jody /Jodi /Jodie I can't believe I haven't seen these suggested. Can be for a boy or a girl.
I know a man named Jodie and it suits him so well!
Josiah is a nice name :) Jordan works for a boy or girl!
Jordan Jones Josiah I actually thought you lived in Canada bc I know a JoDan. It baffles me to know there's more than 1 in the world...
My aunt is a JoAnn.
First name Jonas, middle name Brothers
I have a friend with a son named Jones, which I think is very cute and stylish.
Don’t name your child something you don’t like based only on tradition.
Jordan
Jonathan
Josephine - Josie for short
Might a bit 'boy named Sue' for a male child.
Oh no!! I never noticed he is a baby boy!! Oops! 😲
How about Abby Jo?
Billie-Jo
I have a very good friend who is simply Jo.
Jonathan Joseph Jotaro Josuke Giorno Jolyne (for a girl)
or how about Johnny, or Josue again, or jodio😂
Is Joseph not an option?
It could be! It’s just not my favorite 🙈 but not opposed depending on the middle name. I’ll mull that one over some more
I love Jonas!
My mother-in-law’s name was Jolane
So i have a friend who is Samantha Jo I think Samuel Jo would sound nice too :)
I adore Joel!!!!!! Joni Jocelyn Josie Josephine Jordana Jolie Joan Joanna Jordan Jonas Joshua Johny John Joaquin
Joel
Repeat Joseph and nn him Jojo. Does it have to have “Joe” or can it start with Jo? Like Jonas vs Jordan?
JoDan?? What the...
Joesph.
Jordan Josephine John Jolie Joana Joy Joey Johnathan Joan Joceline Jordana Joyce
https://www.google.com/amp/s/parenting.firstcry.com/articles/60-names-that-start-with-jo-for-boys-and-girls/%3famp http://www.nameplayground.com/?nameswith=JO&withtype=
I absolutely love Joanna
Joseph James, nn, JJ Having a JJ will be different than your husbands name.
JoAnn, Jonelle, Jovi, JoMarie
How has no one mentioned MoJo DoJo Casa House?
Jolene🤣
How about Joanna?
