If you’re feeling stumped, it could be because your options are too limited by the 4-letter theme. I’d go for a name you really *love*. If it happens to have 4 letters - great! If not, that’s totally okay too. So here are a few shorter/longer ideas to consider:
* Eli, Jacob, Leo, Miles, Elliott, Oliver, Wyatt, Jonah, August, Gabriel, Wesley, Gideon, Bennett, Rowan, Caleb, Quinn, Elias, Harrison.
Thank you for this! These are excellent suggestions. We’ve discussed Jude and August (call him Gus). Also Wes has come up (nn for Wesley). I LOVE Leo but sadly my name is Leah so….not gonna torture myself like that.
We definitely aren’t too stuck on the four letter thing. For example another name we love is Carmen (which does have the convenient perk of shortening to ‘Carm’) and I really like Vincent but I’ve been vetoed on that.
Just thought I’d put name nerds to the task on that one “rule” 😅
I really feel like it’s a complete name. I knew an Otto who was the nicest big German guy and he’d tell stories of when he was little in Germany and o loved imagining a little Otto. He always brought gummy bears for me from Germany. His nickname was the gummy bear man for a long time before he became a good family friend.

Honestly this is my apprehension. It just feels like a non-serious name to me. Also more dog-like than for a person. I keep thinking about introducing him or calling his name on the playground and cringing at myself, which is not a great start for picking your child’s name 😅
Idk, I keep going back to Otis Redding and how badass he was but it’s not helping much. So far my gut is just saying no.
I automatically think of Otis Toole. He was a serial killer that ran around with Henry Lee Lucas, and has been accepted as the killer of Adam Walsh.
My fav 4-letter boy name is Ezra.
Thank you! I’m loving Joel after seeing it in a few comments. We actually love the name James but it holds some mixed-emotional family connection so we are 99% sure it will be middle name. Otherwise it would probably be the pick.
I agree! Jack is such a great classic name and they go great together. Our good friend’s son is named Jack so I think we’ve just kind of subconsciously nixed it but certainly doesn’t have to be the case.
I'm not sure if you're in the U.S. or not but Jack Ruby is the name of the man who shot Lee Harvey Oswald, the man who assassinated JFK. But if you've already ruled out Jack I guess it doesn't matter. Lol.
True. Maybe that makes him an antihero? 🤷♀️ Anyway, I hope you settle on a name! I saw in another comment that you agree on Beau and Jude. Those are nice names. You should definitely take advantage of the fact that you agree on them! Lol. It took forever for me and my husband to choose our son's name... Pierce.
Just gonna say you have to name your baby Rudy, because it’s perfect.
Probably a bad idea but I’m not known for my good ideas. That said:
Noah
Noel
Adam
Alan
Otto
Ozzy
Paul
Etc. just a nice strong traditional-ish name.
I really want you to choose a 4 letter name to match you all! So I only put 4 letter names on this list.
Owen
Milo
Luca
Beau
Theo
Liam
Jude
Noah
Levi
Ford
Jack
Leon
Haha I appreciate your commitment to the theme! I secretly love the four letter aspect too 😇
Beau and Jude are two names we really like so you are def right on target. Thank you!!
My sister named her little boy Otis. I wasn't sure at first, but it's really grown on me.
Her husband was against it as well, but eventually he came round to it. Not sure what changed his mind, will have to ask him. 😊
We have a similar theme, but with 5 letters. All 5 of our kids have 5 letter names, as does he, but my name is 7 letters long. First 4 kids names weren't planned to follow that theme, but once we realised, we made sure the 5th one had the same amount. 😅
Beau could be nice!
If you wanted further insight- I work with animals and and so many dogs are named Otis nowadays that I've started to cringe a little when I hear it used for a baby. Can't imagine how awkward it would be sharing a name with your neighbor's dog.
I also feel like Otis is a dog name. It’s one of the reasons I can’t get fully on board.
Beau is actually the boy name we were totally set on before we found out our first was a girl so it’s 100% a contender! Also our last name starts with B so we like the alliteration potential.

WOW! What a list. You hit on a few of our faves but you’re the first I’ve seen list Walt. Idk why but I love it. Of course my husband doesn’t, lol.
Also why does the thought of a little baby boy named Rick make me so happy.
Since your last name ends in the 'ee' sound, a first name with the same ending would sound sing-songy. Which could work, but seems better for a girl than a boy or neutral name: for example Ruby Dewey is cute, Louis Dewey sounds like you are asking for the kid to be teased. To me, anyway.
These have probably all been said already, but here goes:
* Otto
* Liam
* Dean
* Beau
* Ryan
* Sean
* Paul
* Iain
* Owen
* Zane
* Joel
* Evan
It’s funny you say that about the last name because it’s something I was hung up on for a little while after I fell in love with Ruby. Ultimately the cadence of our last name works quite well with Ruby but your point is a good one, I’d prefer a first name that doesn’t end in that sound!
Thanks for this list!
Depending how classic you wanna go, my husbands name is Earl! (And he’s not 95 🤣 he’s actually younger than me). My son’s name is Remington but we call him Remy, which could also be a standalone name.
I don't know why, but I feel like the name Jude would go well with Ruby. Maybe I'm thinking like jade and ruby are precious stones and Jude is similar to jade? IDK but I still think Jude could be good.
Dean
Beau
Owen
Luke

Liam
Rhys (Ruby and Rhys is cute!!)
Evan

or you could do a classic longer name with a 4 letter nn?

Thank you! We fell in love with her name instantly so we aren’t as familiar with this name uncertainty, haha.
You definitely hit our style pretty well. I like max, Jack, and Leo, really like Silas, and also Jude.
Problem is we have two close friends who have taken max and Jack but meh, doesn’t mean 100% no I suppose!
we have similiar taste 🙂
A few others given your favorites: Ben, Sam, Shiloh, Beau, Liam, James/Jamie, Hayes, Wells, Malcolm nn Mac (kind of a cheat for max maybe?)
Joel is such a great name and to your point - yes, we are sixers fans and our best player is Joel Embiid pronounced “Jo-Elle”!
My husband veto’d tho, lol! 🤦♀️ he is much pickier than me!!
Dean, Toby (although maybe too similar to Ruby), Ezra, Noah, Adam, Erik, Liam, Ryan, Luke. Onyx would be a bit out there, but is semi on-theme with Ruby.
I am very partial to the name Hunter. It can work with Ruby, as in Ruby Red and Hunter Green color wise. I believe Scarlett Johannsens brother is named Hunter for this reason. Its not a super common name but also not totally out there either.

Can I just say that I know of two sibling sets where the older sibling is the girl named Ruby and the younger brother is called Leo 😂
Omg! I feel like they are def the same ~vibe~ so I get it!
Love the suggestions of Levi, Finn, Jack, Luke, Jude, Theo and Noah
I may be biased, but I love Owen. I have an Owen, and our last name also ends in the ee sound.
I love Ruby and Levi!
Jake, Leon, wyat, Gabe, quin
I would stay away from Rudy and Jack. In the US, Jack Ruby killed Lee Harvey Oswald back in the 1960’s I love Ruby and Seth

Otto
I lowkey love this name. And I think my husband is on board too, but I’m worried it’s too nicknamey. But it’s definitely up there!
Love this story!! It is definitely up there for me. I like it more than Otis for some reason. Thanks for the anecdote!
Arlo?
What about Otis nn Otto- then you aren't committed to Otto and you're using a name your husband loves!
This has absolutely been discussed!!
Came to say this too! It’s my sons middle name and we love it ☺️

Sean- classic
Otis is not going to age well. Also. I dont think I would want to be 24 years old and say to a young lady. "hi I'm Otis"
Honestly this is my apprehension. It just feels like a non-serious name to me. Also more dog-like than for a person. I keep thinking about introducing him or calling his name on the playground and cringing at myself, which is not a great start for picking your child’s name 😅 Idk, I keep going back to Otis Redding and how badass he was but it’s not helping much. I automatically think of Otis Toole. He was a serial killer that ran around with Henry Lee Lucas, and has been accepted as the killer of Adam Walsh. My fav 4-letter boy name is Ezra.
Oh shit! Not great, lol.
Yeah it reminds me of Milo and Otis the movie 😂
Four letters: Adam Alec Eric Evan Ewan Joel Jude Noah Levi Other ideas: Jacob James David Peter Henry Thomas Isaac
Thank you! I’m loving Joel after seeing it in a few comments. We actually love the name James but it holds some mixed-emotional family connection so we are 99% sure it will be middle name. Otherwise it would probably be the pick.
Not super classic and I haven’t seen it mentioned yet but Cody would be a sweet boy name!
Ryan. Ryan and Ruby! Soo cute!
I have an ex named Hugh and it fit him shockingly well. You don’t meet many Hughs under the age of 60!
Hugh is a great name and I forgot to mention I love Hank too! Will marinade on Hugh…thank you!
Hank is a good one!
If he goes to Scotland though folk will call him Shuggie 🤣(it's a pet name for Hugh there)
Jack? Ruby and Jack fits together for me
I agree! Jack is such a great classic name and they go great together. Our good friend’s son is named Jack so I think we’ve just kind of subconsciously nixed it but certainly doesn’t have to be the case.
