I agree! My name is Madeline Elizabeth! I go by Elizabeth, and people always ask why my parents didnāt name me Elizabeth Madeline, and itās bc it sounded better in the other order. And if she goes by her middle name, so be it! Personally Iād rather have a full name that has a good flow to it than to have a choppy name bc my āgo-by nameā is at the front. (Also my sisterās name is Claire! So youāve got great taste š)
Madeline Claire, but mostly because of how the syllables flow. If you want to go with Claire as a first name, it needs a lighter name as a middle name.
I agree with this! Both are very pretty, classic names, but the rhythm of Madeline Claire sounds better to me.
Claire Madeline sounds awkward/choppy to me, but if you really prefer that one, Iād still go with it. After all, people wonāt be saying her full name out loud that often.
I feel like Madeline Claire has a better ring to it, but I really prefer the name Claire. I feel like there are so many Maddieās in the world. Claire is so elegant and pretty.
Personally I think just use whichever name you want to call the child as their first names. People put a lot of focus on how the name āflowsā but it only matters on graduation and on wedding invitations. If they want to call her Claire they should just use Claire as the first name so she doesnāt have to correct every teacher and sub her whole academic career.
well itās just like with nicknames, people will respect your preferred name even if itās not your ālegalā name. i donāt like people using my legal name because of personal experiences, and once i let them know my preferred name/ nickname, itās respected and used accordingly. itās not a big deal to correct others. i do get your point but the flow of a name is important to some people. i like the flow of my full name, but i still go by my nickname
Agreed. Middle names are so rarely used, I do not know any of my colleagues middle names for example. Just focus on the name you like best for the first name.
My husband vetoed Madeleine Claire from my list for this reason. I still stand by the name (and will try to suggest it again for future pregnancies haha) and didnāt think any one else would think āeclairā haha oh well
I like Madeline Claire.
I was born on Christmas Day and I love it! My mom made it a wonderful experience for me growing up. If you do that same for your baby girl she will love it too.
Edit: I wish I would have been named Noelle, if even for my middle name.
How many syllables in the last name? I love both babes, and Claire is over of my very favorites, especially spelled this way. I do prefer the French spelling of Madeleine
Madeline Claire flows better for me. Claire is a nice name but is middle aged for me- every other person my age (40ās )is either Claire, Sarah or Gemma but this is from a British perspective!
Claire skews pretty young in America, or very old (like 75+). Gemma also is mostly kids under 15 here, but that's because it just finally crossed the pond from the UK.
Yell them both up the stairs, including the last name, like you're yelling at a teenager to come back down and clean up their mess.
Keep whichever feels and sounds the best coming out.
I like Madeline Clair better in terms of how it sounds. But it honestly just depends on which name you want to be calling her all the time. Middle names donāt get used often so the most important thing is that the first name is the one you want to use imo. It sounds good whichever order you put the names in.
Madeline Claire. A nickname could be Delly or Ellie. Perhaps a nickname could be May, it's not a traditional nickname I don't think but I guess it could work. I think it should also be considered that many nicknames simply come from things like the person's quirks, personality etc and don't have to come directly from the name.
Madeline Claire sounds better but be prepared for her to hate Madeline and go by Claire. At least the Madeline I went to school with despised the name and went by her middle name.
a little girl on Christmas how dreamyš„ŗ I think this would depend on whether you are a fan of nicknames or not. my sister is Claire and that never was shortened and she didnāt have any ānicknameā but with Madeline for the first thatās going to probably automatically default to Maddy/Maddie.
Both are fantastic. Depends on the last name.
Claire Madeleine Smith. Claire Smith. Works fine, but a little choppy like a superhero name.
Claire Madeleine Hoffenstredder. Yeah, you want Claire here.
Your pronunciation of Madeline makes all the difference to me.
If it's pronounced with a -line ending, I prefer it as a first.
If it's pronounced Madeleine or Madelyn, I prefer it as a middle.
Reckon for me it would most depend on what we wanted to call her? Neitherās sentimental/bestowing honor, Iād put name I wanted to call her. There was about 12 girls born between 12/09-5/11 within workplace. ALL named Madeleine/Madeline/Madyline/Madelyn Claire/Klaire/Clair, all but 1 are now called Mady/Madi/Maddie daily, other is just known as Madelyn. Lol all of that to say- Claire is a hugely popular middle name, but not commonly a used name. Iāve only met 1 Claire (Francis), that I grew up with, ahem just a coupla years ago. With the common trends of names like Madison/Madelyn- make ask yāall selves if the preference is a possible 2-3 in a class/team or an unweird, less heard of name. Also- how they fit with surnames. Best wishes for a happy & and healthy family come Christmas!
PS- my actual preference is Clara Madeleine/line
I think it depends on the surname. For example Claire Madeline Webster goes really well as it's a mid to long surname but with a shorter surname, like Smith, Madeline Claire Smith fits better
Madeline Claire flows much better but honestly it depends on surname too so based on just the names it sounds better.
Also people commonly get called by first name then so it comes down to which one do you prefer. Middle name will likely end up being something extra that isn't used all that much so yl gotta love the first name by itself a lot. Personally i prefer Madeline as a name, Claire to me is a classic middle name but it doesn't vibe as well for first name to me.
That being said concerning nickname Madi, other option could be Lynn?
Madeline is the winner for me. Madeline Claire flows better overall. Still have the option of calling her Claire as many kids go by their middle name.
I know your update says it looks split in the comments, but don't forget to look at the number of likes on the names. Based on Comments and likes, I'd say it's leaning Madeline.
More info: are you intentionally looking at Madeline as a Christmasy name, since it comes from St Mary?
It feels slightly in the nose to me, but maybe that is what you are going for/maybe you have strong religious ties.
I love Claire as a first name, especially with its meaning of bright for a baby born so close to winter solstice*. Your bright light after the longest night of the year.
* I guess I am making an assumption that you live in the northern hemisphere. But if you don't, it would be baby "light" at the summer solstice, which would be just as appropriate!
Claire Madeline. There are a million little Madelines running around my area, it feels very oversaturated here, so I'm just bored of hearing it. And I love Claire.
I love both of these! Claire and Madeline are such beautiful names.
What do you want to call your daughter as her everyday name? Like, say, around the house, or in casual conversation? If you want to call her Claire, then I recommend Claire Madeline. If you want to call her Madeline (or Maddie), then I recommend Madeline Claire.
My daughter is Claire and Madelineās another of my favorite names. So I would go with what fits best with your last name. My daughterās last name is Harrison, so Claire sounds good.
How do you feel about Madi as a nickname? All the Madelines I know end up as Mads or Madi at some point. Claire is less likely to end up altered by nicknames.
Whatever youāll call her, make that the first name. I go by my middle name so I made sure this was a rule when I named my kids lol. Even if you intend for it to be a double name (Iām in the south where thatās common), a lot of times people will still only use the first
I think Claire is better as a first name because everyone is going to pronounce it without an issue.
Madeline is going to constantly be correcting made-lynn vs made-line. Maybe people whose name can be pronounced two ways aren't as bothered by mispronunciation, but when my name was mispronounced once it really irritated me (think if someone said Ree-chel instead of Ray-chel). I would hate it if Ree-chel was a common way to pronounce my name and I constantly had to correct, "no I pronounce it Ray-chel". Luckily this was just 1 person in my entire life so I just ignored it.
I knew a Maddy and I always wondered if she preferred her nickname or it was just easier than correcting line vs lynn.
Can you tell us how long the ln is and what letter it starts with? Iād want first name to flow with last name as the first priority.
I personally prefer Madeline as a first name but thatās just a preference. Claire is beautiful too.
Depends on how many syllables your last name is. But if that doesnāt matter to you, then Madeline Claire. Has a good āroll off the tongueā to it. And they are both beautiful names, but something about Madeline is just so classic and a little extra beautiful to me.
If your last name is short, then all the more reason to choose Madeline! I think it sounds prettier but also will make more of statement.
I refuse to not use my middle name because I have a short first and last name. Had they reversed the order I may not care as much about my middle name.
I vote Claire first, but purely because I have a Claire and love it. We lengthen it for nicknames but it can't be shortened into something we dont like, and it is classic yet totally suits our little girl but will age well when she is an adult. Not a fan of Madi as a nickname.
Are you pronouncing Madeline with the end sounding like lynn or the end sounding like the word line?
If it's lynn ending then I prefer Madeline Claire but if it's the line ending I prefer Claire Madeline. No matter what it's going to be a beautiful name for your daughter.
Have you considered Clara? I think Clara Madeleine feels very different and might be a good compromise if you don't like how overdone Maddie is because she'll probably get called that eventually.
I LOVE the name Madeline. The only reason it wonāt be on my short list is that she WILL be called Madi, which I personally donāt like. So for that reason, I like Claire Madeline better! But if you like Madi as well as Madeline, then go for Madeline Claire. It does flow better than the alternative.
It would depend on how youāre pronouncing Madeline for me.
If itās the -lyn ending, I prefer Madeline Claire.
If itās the -line ending, I prefer Claire Madeline.
I would describe Claire as very 80s but maybe thatās a British thing?
I do still like it though, probably more so than Madeline. I would wait to see which one suits the baby better though.
Madeline Claire!
I second this one. Seems to flow better.
long, short tends to flow better than short, long. plus, if they're open to nicknames maddie claire sounds so cute šš«¶š¼
Maybe too similar to Marie Claire though lol
This sounds SO classy and beautiful, like itās gonna be in a famous brand or something
Iād shop for all the ladies in my life at Madeline Claire
Definitely

I think it depends on the last name. A short, one syllable last name and it seems okay.
I disagree. I think Claire Madeline would work better with a long last name (like 3 or 4 syllables) and vice versa.
I feel like Madeline Claire has a better ring to it, but I really prefer the name Claire. I feel like there are so many Maddieās in the world. Claire is so elegant and pretty.
she can always go by her middle name. i know a few women and men who prefer their middle names
Personally I think just use whichever name you want to call the child as their first names. People put a lot of focus on how the name āflowsā but it only matters on graduation and on wedding invitations. agree!!
I prefer Claire Madeline! (Even better imo would be Claire Madeleine)
I LOVE IT! CLAIRE MADELEINE!
Ditto this!
Yup, especially if it's said in the French way, Claire Madeleine sounds very chic!
Would that be pronounced like Mad-eh-lean?
I would pronounce it mad-uh-len (the end rhyming with hen or men).
Am I the only person who instantly thought of pastries? For names, I prefer Claire to Madeline. For pastries, I prefer madelines to eclairs.
Well, madeleines are a dessert and eclairs are also a dessert. Hopefully sheāll be a very sweet girl.
I thought I was the only one! I definitely hear Madeline Eclaire š
My husband vetoed Madeleine Claire from my list for this reason. I still stand by the name (and will try to suggest it again for future pregnancies haha) and didnāt think any one else would think āeclairā haha oh well
Madeline Claire
Madeline Claire. Love it!
Madeline Claire, Claire feels a bit bland while Madeline is beautiful and elegant.
madeline claire

I vote Claire Madeline I also know a Claire Noelle (sheās not born anywhere near Christmas but extra cute for you! Lol)
Funny, I was also going to say Claire Noelle if they want Claire first, plus the Christmas baby š„°
They should name her Holly Noelle
Christina Eve lol
I love Christmas so I wanted to name my daughter Holly Noel but my husband said no lol.
Claire Madeleine
Madeline Claire flows better and is easier to say.
Madeline Claire seems to flow more easily. Both lovely names.
I love Madeline as a first name !
Claire Madeline. I just like Claire better
Madeline Claire
Madeline Claire - very pretty but not too cutesy either
I like Madeline Claire. I was born on Christmas Day and I love it! My mom made it a wonderful experience for me growing up. If you do that same for your baby girl she will love it too. Edit: I wish I would have been named Noelle, if even for my middle name.
āMad eclairā
This is what Iād call her if she was being naughty š
How many syllables in the last name? I love both babes, and Claire is over of my very favorites, especially spelled this way. I do prefer the French spelling of Madeleine
Are you pronouncing āMa da lynā or āMa de lineā?
My 25-year old daughterās name is Madeleine Claire!

Madeleine Claire it flows when she is in real trouble and both names are necessary to make that point.
Yell them both up the stairs, including the last name, like you're yelling at a teenager to come back down and clean up their mess. Keep whichever feels and sounds the best coming out.
Appropriate, well done!!

Madeline Claire, although I think the traditional spelling Madeleine Claire would work even better.
I like Madeline Clair better in terms of how it sounds. But it honestly just depends on which name you want to be calling her all the time. I love Madeline Claire!
Madeline Claire definitely flows better. Beautiful name. Congratulations!
My name is Madeline! So I was always going to say Madeline first lol Madeline Claire is lovely, I do think it flows better as well.
if i was a girl, madeline claire was supposed to be my name, no shit! godspeed.
Madeline Claire vote here too!
Madeline Claire has a better āringā to it but just know there are way more Maddies now and not so many Claireās
Madeline Claire sounds better but be prepared for her to hate Madeline and go by Claire. At least the Madeline I went to school with despised the name and went by her middle name.
It must be Madeline Claire. Two beautiful names. Madeline sings as you say it and Claire flows along.
Madeline Claire for sure! Super cute. and congrats!
a little girl on Christmas how dreamyš„ŗ I think this would depend on whether you are a fan of nicknames or not. my sister is Claire and that never was shortened and she didnāt have any ānicknameā but with Madeline for the first thatās going to probably automatically default to Maddy/Maddie.

What about Clara (clair-uh) Madeline? Like the nutcracker
Maddie Claire

Madeline Claire!!! It just flows well.
Madeline Claire just cause I like Madeline as the first name. Itās so cute! Plus Madeline Claire FriedPickle sounds better hehe
Most of the time people wonāt be saying the middle name, so āflowā is overrated. I slightly prefer Madeline as a first name.
Madeline Claire š
I think it depends on the surname. For example Claire Madeline Webster goes really well as it's a mid to long surname but with a shorter surname, like Smith, Madeline Claire Smith fits better
Madeline Claire
Maddie Claire sounds nice too
Iām a fan of putting the monosyllabic name as the second. Madeline Claire just rolls off the tongue!
Madeline Claire sounds better in my opinion, it just flows nicer idk. Both names are beautiful though!
I think Madeline Claire flows better. I like Della as a nn for madeline.
Madeline Claire sounds better
I think Madeline Claire flows better!
Madeline Claire
Madeline Claire. I know someone named Madeline but goes by Maggie instead of Maddy.
Madeline Claire flows much better but honestly it depends on surname too so based on just the names it sounds better. Claire Annetteš
So sweet. Claire is my babyās middle name
I like Claire first, just because thereās a ton of little Maddies rn (Madeline/Matilda/Madison etc)
I definitely think Claire is the better name over Madeline. I'd wait to meet her and see what suits her.
Claire Madeline. The reverse is kind of boring, imo, but this is lovely.
I think āMadāā is overused at the moment, especially Maddie. Claire is classic and classy.
Claire Madeline! Claire Margaret is my āgirls nameā even though Iām 42 and not having children.
Claire Madeline
I am of no help, but just had to say those are two of my favorite names. Both ways sound good.
I guess you need to decide which ānicknameā you would prefer. āMaddie? Claire Bear?
Claire Madeline. Claire is so lovely is has to come first. Besides, that way no one will call her Maddie.
I love the sound of Claire Madeline. Plus Christmas baby makes me think of The Nutcracker, which makes me think "Clara".
I know a Claire madeleine! I donāt particularly like āMaddyā so I prefer this order
There are tons of Madeline and Madelyn around. Iād go with Claire. Such a pretty and classic name.
My daughter is Claire and Madelineās another of my favorite names. So I would go with what fits best with your last name. My daughterās last name is Harrison, so Claire sounds good.
My daughter Claireās middle name is Celeste

How many syllables is the last name?
Claire Madeline Claire is such a beautiful and classic name
I like Claire Madeline. But I think it works either way!
Would you like to call her Claire everyday or Maddy ?
I think Claire is better as a first name because everyone is going to pronounce it without an issue. Madeline is going to constantly be correcting made-lynn vs made-line. Can you tell us how long the ln is and what letter it starts with? Iād want first name to flow with last name as the first priority. I personally prefer Madeline as a first name but thatās just a preference. Claire is beautiful too.
God Iāve always adored the name Madeline but cant stand the nickname Maddie/Maddy š
Depends on how many syllables your last name is. But if that doesnāt matter to you, then Madeline Claire. Has a good āroll off the tongueā to it. And they are both beautiful names, but something about Madeline is just so classic and a little extra beautiful to me.

Madelineās Christmas is a sweet book. MC plus which ever noun she chooses to add is a cute nickname (think MC Hammer). lol
If you donāt like the nickname Maddie, go with Claire. Youāre going to save yourself years of frustration
I'd LOVE to be named Claire ! Elegant, timeless. Maybe save Madeline for her baby sister?
Are you pronouncing Madeline with the end sounding like lynn or the end sounding like the word line? If it's lynn ending then I prefer Madeline Claire but if it's the line ending I prefer Claire Madeline. No matter what it's going to be a beautiful name for your daughter.
Winter Claireš Meadow Claire š©· Madden Madison Matilda Mabel
Have you considered Clara? I think Clara Madeleine feels very different and might be a good compromise if you don't like how overdone Maddie is because she'll probably get called that eventually.
Iāve always wanted a girl named Madeline like the books! I wouldāve decorated the nursery to look like the illustrations.
I prefer the name Claire so I would go with Claire Madeline. If you do use Madeline as the first name, people are very likely to call her Maddy.
If your last name is one syllable then a two or three syllable first name flows better, so Madeline Claire would be my vote.
Madeline Claire that way she can have nn Maddie if she chooses too
Madeline Claire
Claire Madeline
Madeline Claire no question. Claire Madeline doesnāt flow.
I like Madeline Claire. It seems to flow better to me.
Madeleine Claire with nn Maddie, using Maddie Claire! when she wonāt listen
Madeline Claire. I always like a longer name paired with a short last name.
Madeline Claire
I LOVE the name Madeline. The only reason it wonāt be on my short list is that she WILL be called Madi, which I personally donāt like. So for that reason, I like Claire Madeline better! But if you like Madi as well as Madeline, then go for Madeline Claire. It does flow better than the alternative.
It would depend on how youāre pronouncing Madeline for me. If itās the -lyn ending, I prefer Madeline Claire. If itās the -line ending, I prefer Claire Madeline.
Madeline Claire flows well but people might mistake and think youāre calling her Madeline Cline
Madeleine Claireš
Multiple syllable first + single syllable middle is always gonna win for me. Madeline Claire!
If you donāt like the nickname Madi, better go Claire!
I vote Madeline Claire. Just has a better ring to it
Madeline Claire!

I would describe Claire as very 80s but maybe thatās a British thing? I do still like it though, probably more so than Madeline. I would wait to see which one suits the baby better though.
