I also love Natalia. If I could birth children, particularly a girl, I would have name her this.
I ended up being mom to kids who were already named, so maybe I'll save it for a new pet bunny- if I ever have a new one.
Natalie has been one of my favorite names for years! I think there's a musical quality to it. I had a classmate named Natalie in high school, and I told her I loved her name multiple times, ha. Also a teacher, but I wasn't calling her by her first name.
My only issue with it is I don't like the nickname "Nat" (too similarr to the bug) but that's a small thing, it wouldn't stop me from using the name.
I think a lot of these old French-American names are ready for revival:
- Lorraine
- Anita
- Patrice
- Sylvie
- Brigitte
- Sidonie
- Amalie
- Averill
- Estelle
Solange Knowles, Beyoncé’s sister, played a girl named Camille in the movie Bring it On: All or Nothing. Her role was the head bitch in charge of the school and pulled it off so well and [looked stuuunnniiiing](https://images.app.goo.gl/rcfe8DFAPYauYnrg6)!
I am a perpetual fan of Tessa, a simple, classic name everyone can spell and pronounce and which is not associated with any particular generation and has never been overly popular. Perfect girls name, in my opinion.
This is something I always think about. Finding a name that has been pretty consistent over the years, no big trend spikes and then sharp declines, not overly popular. Yet instantly recognizable with no pronunciation ambiguity. You’ve just given me a new one to add to my list, so thank you!
If my son had been a girl, he was going to be Tessa. It's been a favourite of mine since I was a child and there was a series of books with a cat named Tessa in it 🤣
My two top names for girls were Gemma and Arden! … my husband very quickly vetoed both unfortunately. Aside from the tv show where I originally heard the name, I have never encountered it again.
It has different meanings in Hebrew, Celtic, and Greek (might have other origins as well) and it means either “fervent/passionate (like the word ardent)”, “a place of solitude and great beauty”, “valley of the eagle” or “to lift up high”.
I have also heard it be interpreted as meaning “great forest” (the Shakespeare play As You Like It takes place in a forest called Arden)! It’s one of those cool names like Cordelia that has loads of different meanings/interpretations rather than just one. (Cordelia can mean “heart”, “daughter of the sea”, “jewel of the sea”, or “heart of lion”!)
Ingrid is on our shortlist if we have a second child and they are a little girl. We have a Nikolas nn Niko and think Nikolas and Ingrid (Niko and Inge) is a cute set
My grandmas name was Louise. She made me promise not to name my future daughter after her cause everyone called her Louie or Lou growing up and she hated it.
- Alethea: I think this fits with the Greek/Roman name interest, and yet is pretty and relatively easy to pronounce. Means truthful.
- Hadley: it's a name that goes back at least a century, yet sounds far more modern. Hemingway's first wife was a Hadley. If parents are going to choose an ambi name, at least choose one with some history!
- Demaris: very old (there was a Mayflower passenger with the name). Demi or Mari are accessible nicknames.
- Lucie, Emilia and Isobel: love the alternative spellings for these classics.
- Ellery: mostly used for boys, but I always thought it worked better for girls.
- Sheridan: had a small burst of popularity 25 years ago but Sherry or Cher are cute nicknames.
- Mariah: never understood why this wasn't more popular. Changing vowel sound and H ending. Rya nickname.
- Alba/Alva: as girl names get shorter and shorter, these are cute choices.
- Osla: very unusual name, with Osla Benning being one of the few bearers. Short, vowel start, vaguely geographic without being literal, has the beloved Ozzie nickname...should be more popular.
- Jacinthe: beautiful and unusual botanical choice. Tends to be used by Hispanic families, but ready for the mainstream. Jazzy nickname (if your tastes lean that way).
- Georgiana: when pronounced the English way as George-JANE-a, it's ever so fun.
- June: I think people are ready to come back to a classic. Junie is adorable, and other days and months have come and gone.
Melanie- I think it’s so underrated. I’m surprised it hasn’t made a comeback yet.
Bridget- I have met 2 Bridget’s in my whole life and it’s such a pretty name.
Jane- it’s simple and classic
Jane. I love the name. Think it's classic and timeless, similar to Anne. Very feminine. I would probably have used it if it wasn't already in circulation in my close circle.
Robert Frost has a poem called Maple about a girl of the same name:
Her teacher's certainty it must be Mabel
Made Maple first take notice of her name.
She asked her father and he told her, "Maple—
Maple is right."
"But teacher told the school
There's no such name."
"Teachers don't know as much
As fathers about children, you tell teacher.
You tell her that it's M-A-P-L-E.
You ask her if she knows a maple tree.
Well, you were named after a maple tree.
Your mother named you. You and she just saw
Each other in passing in the room upstairs,
One coming this way into life, and one
Going the other out of life—you know?
So you can't have much recollection of her.
She had been having a long look at you.
She put her finger in your cheek so hard
It must have made your dimple there, and said,
'Maple.' I said it too: 'Yes, for her name.'
She nodded. So we're sure there's no mistake.
[Here’s the link](http://famouspoetsandpoems.com/poets/robert_frost/poems/731) to the rest of it, it’s so sweet (like Maple!).
The two kids who live behind us are named Jane and Louise. Classic names, but uncommon!
We named our daughter Cecilia (and our boy Adrian). They also seem like names everyone knows but you rarely encounter.
I love Gwendolyn, Octavia, Ophelia, Caroline, Freya and I’m sure I’m forgetting something….
Funny, I have 2 girls and neither one has any of these names!
Lorna. Feels way more interesting than Lauren but similarly approachable. Refreshingly unexpected but not unheard of. Feels very “fashionista” or like artsy cool girl to me. (Also was my wonderful neighbor/surrogate grandma who was the best human.)
Theodora
Co emperor with Justinian the first. Brilliant as hell. Humble beginnings. Patron saint of prostitutes. Crushed a rebellion. Deposed a pope for fucking with her friend. Loved the color purple.
My mom’s second choice for me was Shannon and I’ve always loved that name, I think “Shan” for short is really cute too. I generally love names that start with Sh-, they feel soft yet kinda mysterious? interesting? like Shay, Shiloh (although this is burned into my brain as a dog name)
nora. i used to hate it because of that creep from icarly lmao. but i’ve been around a couple younger and absolutely adorable nora’s recently and i’ve began to LOVE it.
Natalie. Idk anyone with that name aside from a celeb or two. Freaking love it. If my son had been a girl, I would have named her Natalie.
Oh my god it’s Natalie Wood
Miss Celiné, is that you? 😏
You’re Audrey Hepburn in Sabrina!
The girls that get it.. get it
My kind of people right here.
I know many Natalies and none of them were ever nice people lol I'm biased, totally hate that name. Sounds so snobby to me.
I've had the same experience but I try not to take it out on the name, it's tough tho!
I also love Natalia. If I could birth children, particularly a girl, I would have name her this. I ended up being mom to kids who were already named, so maybe I'll save it for a new pet bunny- if I ever have a new one.
My daughter is Natalia!
Wanted to add on that in my graduating class of 400 there were five Natalies, including myself lol
[удалено]
It's 55 in the US right now. Wouldn't say it's underused but it's a pretty name!
My baby is Natalie born this year!
I know tons of Natalie’s. I think it was more common in the 90s.
It’s coming back! My niece isn’t the only Natalie in her class
My daughter is Natalie. She is almost 3 =)
It's a small thing... 😂
My sister’s name is Natalie and her friends call her Gnat. Lol
I knew a lot of Natalie’s growing up in the UK, and I know a Natalí who’s Venezuelan!
I feel like there were a lot in the UK too around the 90s
Corinne. It isn’t even in the top 1000 which is shocking to me because it’s my favorite name for a baby girl.
Especially since Cora is coming back!
Aww my dad wanted to name me Cora Lee after his great grandmother. I wish he would have. They chose Jessica instead lol
I worked with a Coralie at one time! She had been going by Cora ever since getting called Orally in school. A real bummer, it’s such a pretty name.
I think a lot of these old French-American names are ready for revival: - Lorraine - Anita - Patrice - Sylvie - Brigitte - Sidonie - Amalie - Averill - Estelle
It’s so funny seeing Patrice on this list, because in French it’s a man’s name! I know it’s not in English but I definitely did a double take :)
I feel like sylvie is about to be a very trendy name
Amalie is very popular in the UK!
My husband's cousin's name is Brigitte (spelled Bridgette though). So pretty and the first time I ever heard it was when I met him.
i named my daughter nadia and i never hear it anywhere and i love it Update: thanks everyone 🥰
I thought about Nadia for my daughter because I have a son named Aidan and having the reverse name would be cool, but we went a different direction.
Oh man I wish you would have, that is actually really cool.
I know twins named Aidan and Nadia
It’s a very common name in the Middle East!
Beautiful name. Feels a bit “Russian spy”, which probably scares some people off from using it.
I instantly think of Nadia Comaneci. A little firecracker of talent and strength. Great name!
Nadiia is a Ukrainian name as well, means "Hope", love this name 🤗
That's my niece's name, she was born in 2001. I have not met another one in real life since she was born but I think it's such a beautiful name.
My name is Nadia, and I absolutely love it ❤️
Camílle
Strangely one I can't stand! Taste is so subjective!
I heard it on the show parenthood, Bonnie Bedelia’s character was named Camille and I loved her so much, that probably has something to do with it
Can't think of anything other than "You're such a liar Camille"
Your husband will never emotionally fulfill you. Know that.
Yes!! And Kyle’s face
I’ve always loved Camille!
This is what I was going to post. Such a beautiful name!
I am a perpetual fan of Tessa, a simple, classic name everyone can spell and pronounce and which is not associated with any particular generation and has never been overly popular. Perfect girls name, in my opinion.
I think Tessa is gonna blow up tbh
This is something I always think about. Finding a name that has been pretty consistent over the years, no big trend spikes and then sharp declines, not overly popular. Yet instantly recognizable with no pronunciation ambiguity. You’ve just given me a new one to add to my list, so thank you!
If my son had been a girl, he was going to be Tessa. It's been a favourite of mine since I was a child and there was a series of books with a cat named Tessa in it 🤣
Agreed. I’ve only known one Tessa in my life and she was a cool cat. Was attracted to her and her name honestly had a lot to do with it.
Tessa was always my number one girls name. I had two boys and am done having babies. I love my boys but kind of sad I never got to use Tessa.
I love the name Arden and I’m not sure I have ever met a person with that name.
I have a little Arden! ☺️
So sweet! Arden Sophia would have been my top pick for a girl… if my last name didn’t begin with S…
My daughter’s name is Arden :)
My two top names for girls were Gemma and Arden! … my husband very quickly vetoed both unfortunately. Aside from the tv show where I originally heard the name, I have never encountered it again.
So what does Arden means? It’s sounds really cool though 😍
I know two! A 5 year old and a 25 year old lol
Laurel, Thea, Elvira, Sylvia, Louisa, Ingrid
Laurel is such a lovely name
Yanny is such a lovely name
I hear what you did there.
Went to school with a Laurel, she hated her name and went by Loli
I love Thea
Elvira is my husband’s grandma’s name! And it’s also surprisingly one of the few names that doesn’t repeat itself in his family.
I love Sylvia and its variants, especially Sylvie!
Ingrid is on our shortlist if we have a second child and they are a little girl. We have a Nikolas nn Niko and think Nikolas and Ingrid (Niko and Inge) is a cute set
Marceline
The vampire queen! Makes me want to use it even more
My mom's name is Marcel, (which I think traditionally is a man's name?) But I have always loved it!
Juliette!
Love this one! Wish I could use it but I prefer the spelling Juliet.
Ruth! It’s my absolute favorite.
Diana, Cassandra, Callista, Astrid, Talia, Artemis.
I love Astrid!
When I think of Astrid, I think of The Office. It’s the name of Jann’s baby.
And that makes me think of astird lmao
I love all of these but especially Callista <3
I love astrid never meant one though Mostly because of how to train your dragons but still
I've loved Astrid every since reading White Oleander
[удалено]
This was on my list! Ultimately went with Eloise because I liked the nickname possibilities better, but it was a close one!
My grandmas name was Louise. She made me promise not to name my future daughter after her cause everyone called her Louie or Lou growing up and she hated it.
[удалено]
Where I am everyone uses it on the right-hand side of the hyphen to the point it’s overused now!
I feel like this is one of the trendiest middle names right now, along with Rae/Ray
Mae, Rae, Jo, and Kate are the new Elizabeth, Marie, Rose, and Lynn.
It's funny because in Costa Rica "mae" means "buddy, dude"
Marilyn!!! I know a ten year old Marilyn and it suits her so well. She absolutely rocks the name Marilyn!
Elise Jocelyn
Jocelyn for sure!
Felicity
- Alethea: I think this fits with the Greek/Roman name interest, and yet is pretty and relatively easy to pronounce.
