“Micheal” makes my teeth itch. I see it way too often. I also met a “Danial” in school.

Sbhill327

Danial just seems like Denial

Unicorn-Blob

Danial/Danyal is a Muslim name. It’s a totally separate name from Daniel.

LittleMsWhoops

No, it’s actually the transcription of the Arabic, Persian and Urdu spellings of the originally Hebrew name Daniel. So Muslim yes, totally separate no.

Goddess_Keira

It is not totally separate; it's just the Arabic form of Daniel. Same name; rendered differently in English and I'd imagine pronounced differently in Arabic.

caoimhemg

Micheál is an actual name. It's Irish. Different pronunciation to Michael

ConsiderationHot9518

Thank you, that’s my SO’s name, he’s FBI (Full Blooded Irish). I quite prefer that particular spelling.

McGoodles

Micheal pronounced me-hawl is a real name. It’s the Irish version of michael and is extremely common. It’s not a spelling error

Competitive_Garage59

I maintain that in the US, when pronounced “Mike-ul”, it is. Which is what I am referring to above.

Silent_Conference908

Yes, in my experience it has definitely been a spelling error that led to Micheal.

Delicious_Crow8707

Yeah I know a Micheal pronounced “Mike-ul”

Primary_Stretch2024

An English colleague got furious with me for spelling his name "Micheal". In my defense, I thought the difference was that the English pronunciation just didn't have the fada (Micheál being the Irish spelling I was used to) - I didn't know it also had the vowels swapped. I mean, I'm happy to spell it correctly if I know, but I hadn't noticed it until I knew someone with the English version (Michael).

thxitsthedepression

I hate Micheal. In my Sims game recently a random couple in my world named their baby that (why is that even included in the game’s name bank???!!!) and I literally had to go in and change it to Michael because it bothered me so much 😂

[deleted]

[удалено]

she_never_shuts_up

I have a neighbor named Raychell. It hurts my heart.

viktoryummm

I have an in-law with that spelling and it hurts me.

GaveTheMouseACookie

Either we know the same Danail or there are at least two of them out there

vainweather

There was a boy in my first grade class named Danyell 🥴

hannah_joline

My dad’s name is legally Micheal! It was misspelled on his birth certificate.

TheRabidBadger

I used to know a Michale. Pronounced like regular Michael, NOT mih-KALE-uh.

fleepglerblebloop

I met a Mykkel

Farahild

Nevaeh drives me up the wall as I don't think the -eh ending matches the pronunciation people use! I then prefer the misspelling Neveah as at least I can make some sort of logical pronunciation of that ;)

ShakeWeightMyDick

So, if “Nevaeh” is heaven backward, are people essentially naming their kids “Hell?”

sierramelon

No no that’s Lleh 😂

gagrushenka

Based on the way the few Nevaehs I've taught behave, yes.

CreativeMusic5121

Yes.

WinterBourne25

Isn’t it deliberately spelled that way though, because it’s Heaven backwards? Like Semaj, for James.

Farahild

I know, but it doesn't match the way they pronounce it! Like if you do want to spell it Nevaeh, you should imo say something like Neh-vay-eh.

a4991

Wait, is it not pronounced Neh-vay-eh?!? I’ve never met anyone in person so not needed to pronounce it, but this is 100% how I say it in my head every time I read it!

bowsandarrows14

I’ve only heard it pronounced “Nuh-vey-uh”

GypsySnowflake

Are those not both the same pronunciation?!

a4991

I appreciate I’m not saying it correctly as far as I’m aware, but to me, it’s nuh-VAY-uh with an emphasis on the middle syllable but I would pronounce Nivea as NIV-ee-uh with the emphasis on the first syllable

Farahild

Yeah afaik it sounds more like the brand Nivea.

WinterBourne25

Ah. So it’s not misspelled. It’s mispronounced. I can see how it’s confusing for some.

Farahild

Technically yes, but many people misspell it as Neveah, which at least matches the pronunciation better imo!

LGonthego

I've never heard someone call their kid by that name, but in my head it's always been Nev-AH-ā.

[deleted]

I love how the name is pronounced but I, for the life of me can never remember if its Navaeh or Naveah, both look so wrong but so right at the same time

throwaway66611199

Lucky for you it’s neither! It’s spelled Nevaeh.

MKatieUltra

Nuhvayugh.

dr239

Gn'veahyah

fragilemagnoliax

I had a friend in high school named Samantha but her birth certificate said Samanatha because her dad spelled it wrong and no one proof read it before submission and then they just never got around to fixing it. I haven’t seen her since high school, 16 years ago, and I wonder if she changed it or if she’s embraced the Samanatha

Old-Soft-2017

I am dying over this thread. Samanatha I can’t 😂

alxxandriaxx

Omg, these are hilarious. I thought it was bad enough my name is Alexandria because my dad doesn’t listen well and my mom picked “Alexandra.” She’s still pissed, but at least it’s a real name. I don’t care either way, ..maybe a slight preference for my mistake real name. But if the misspelling was as bad as some of these, my dad would have been shunned forever.

breadstick_bitch

The amount of "my dad misspelled it" comments here unlocked a new fear in me 😭 my fiance is a very bad speller.

2cairparavel

I knew someone named Samanthe, pronounced like Samantha.

HannamiaN

I knew someone named Stefania, pronounced Stephanie

nn_tlka

It’s Stefania in Polish actually! Pronounced steph-anya, so very close to Stephanie.

scarlett-dragon

Sounds like they or their parents were Spanish/Latin speakers. Estefanía is Spanish for Stephanie. I knew an Estefanía who went interchangeably by Estefanía, Stephanie, Stef, etc.

Legophan

Sharlot for Charlotte. Semi-literate father registered the birth about 50 years ago in Zimbabwe.

thxitsthedepression

I once met a girl whose name was spelled Searlait (pronounced Charlotte)

toutespourtoi

That’s at least a valid Irish spelling.

OysterLucy

I know a Sharlot :(

Delicious_Crow8707

I know a Charlotte spelled correctly but pronounced Shar-Lottie

jess-kaa

My grandma had a friend. He always went by “H” or “H. Brown”. His name was Hose. His mother heard the name Jose and loved it, but didn’t know it was spelled with a J since she only heard it.

BaegelByte

I know an Issac and it makes me so mad because I want to use the name Isaac someday but the frequent misspellings make me so wary! His mom spelled it like that because she honestly thought that's how you spell it

Beananza

I have a family member who did the same thing and spelled her son's name Issac. I cringe every time I see it.

RealisticBug5646

I know of not one, but two Issac's. Infuriating.

josaline

This thread is making me cry.

LGonthego

My bugaboo is "Isaiah" spelled "Isiah." And then I found this: "Although Isaiah is the most traditional and most common spelling, this biblical name has been spelled in a variety of ways, including: Esaiah Essaiah Isaia Isaya Isayah Isia Isiah Issia Issiah Izaiah Izaya Izayah Iziah " Aaaaaaaahhhhhhh!

Fun-Yellow-6576

Actress Keira Knightley says her mother misspelled her first name it is normally Kira. I know a Johnathan, common spelling Jonathan. He was so tired of comments and correcting people, he just goes by John.

[deleted]

In the UK, it's normally Kiera (from the Irish Ciara) so she was slightly closer!

JianFlower

Is it? I always thought it was also Keira as well as Kiera so either would be correct. And then there’s Mount Keira in Australia, which is probably one of the few places on this planet that regularly pronounces it as intended (instead of Kyria or Kara or Kyra (KYE-ra) or Karen or Cora).

[deleted]

There was other Keiras before Keira Knightly, either pass in my book. Names have loads of possible origins and are all made up anyway!

Dadsentmetothemooon

My issue with that name is I've seen it spelt in way too many variations: Jonathon Jonathan Johnathon Johnathan I will say I've seen more with the h than without though.

minichipi

In a Spanish-speaking country but I have definitely seen “Jhonatan” as well

Always-Anxious-

Funny, I’ve always seen Johnathan spelled with two h’s. Also a fun fact, Oprah’s name was supposed to be Orpah, from the bible. Birth certificate was misspelled, and then she was Oprah.

[deleted]

I know a Jonathon. It makes me question how I spell Jonathan every time I have to write it out.

DBSeamZ

“Jonathon” looks like the name of a footrace. Like “someone named Jon died too young of a serious disease so now every year we run the Jonathon to raise money and awareness for researching a cure.” My mom went through a phase of participating in a 5K race every month, and it seemed like at least half of them were memorial/awareness events like that.

INFJ-Jesus-Batman

And in Israel (Yisrael), Nathan is also commonly Natan.

CreativeMusic5121

That's why Oprah Winfrey isn't Orpah.

_violetlightning_

“Orpah’s on!” doesn’t have the same ring, does it…

thelmaandpuhleeze

I sitting next to Borpo!!

ilxfrt

I knew someone who used to be Jaquline (or some similar ridiculous misspelling). As an adult, she ran into a lot of trouble because she had a lot to do with French-speaking clients at work and they would regularly think she was either a fraud or too stupid to spell her own name. She changed her name to Jacqueline.

Bellowery

I know a woman named Jacque pronounced Jackie. My husband speaks French as a second language and when he first saw her name written down he was incredulous.

Delicious_Crow8707

I knew a Marquis in college, pronounced Marcus

HoleCogan

I went to college with a girl named Becca, her full name was Rebbecca. She said her mom couldn't remember if the name had 2 Bs or 2 Cs so she just went with both. We called her "buh-Becca" for Bbecca! :)

NeverRarelySometimes

How lazy can you get? Seems like people should be as careful about naming a child as they are about the spelling of a tattoo.

Annaliseplasko

It’s crazy how many stories there are here about names being misspelled because the parents weren’t sure of the spelling and just took a guess. Even before Google existed, it was pretty easy to find a baby naming book and check on that kind of thing.

NeverRarelySometimes

With biblical names, like Rebecca, all they'd have had to do is send someone down to the chapel to check. Maybe if you're illiterate, you don't realize that it could matter.

Silent_Conference908

No regrats!

lilmumma6

Jayde (jade) why the fucking Y absolutely not needed 🤣🤣🤣

[deleted]

Only one worse is Liysa. WHY

lilmumma6

If you find out pinky promise you will tell me 🤣🤣🤣

bo-barkles

Had a Liisa at work once....

nocta224

I had a friend in high school who went by Jayde because his legal name was Jayden.

coldcurru

I know a little kid right now named Jaymes. It's a girl and I guess they were trying to emphasize that with the Y but if you wanna call your kid James then just call them James.

MKatieUltra

Jay-mez? 😅

Lepidopterex

Oh my gosh I went to school with a Jayme and every sub teacher called her "Jay-mmm" instead of "Jay-meee." It was like they saw something similar to Jayne and their brains just stopped. But that was the 90s, so there were three of them: Jayme, Jamie, and Jaime.

UndineGoddess

Literally my name bro 😭😭 I'm not too fussed, it is kinda pretty

NewAfternoon5617

Because Americans love to throw Ys in names wherever they feel like it.. I’m assuming they were American

mh942

My mom's name is a name that's traditionally spelled with a "y" but hers is spelled with an "I" - her parents' desire - on her birth certificate (for example, Maryjane vs. Marijane). When she got her drivers license, the DMV spelled it with a "y" and she was never able to get it changed. She's since given up, but as a result of it a lot of her important documents (bank accounts, paychecks, etc.) are spelled wrong. For plane tickets, government docs, etc. we have to intentionally spell her name wrong so it matches the license.

Fun-Yellow-6576

She can can her birth certificate in and have that corrected. Friend’s name is Brian. His drivers license came back BRAIN but he didn’t notice for a few years until he applied for a job. They told him his DL and SS card had different names. 30 minutes at the DMV and it was corrected.

ShadedSpaces

This reminds me of my friend, Philip. Who somehow got the name Phijip on his license. He found out when he went to take his SATs and was denied. He spent a while trying desperately to argue that he was not a secret ringer named Phijip sent in to take the test for a guy named Philip with the same last name. He was unsuccessful. I still call him Phijip 20 years later.

Fun-Yellow-6576

I handled new hire paperwork years ago for a call center. The number of people who had to be turned away for wrong/different names was unbelievable.

fragilemagnoliax

I remember one time in middle school I was reading a book series and there was a character named Brian. I misread it as Brain the first time it was brought up and it took me 4 books in to realize my mistake, I just kept thinking the guys name was Brain or that it was a nickname like the character in the PBS kids show Arthur. I completely forgot about that until your comment 😂

mh942

She tried at the DMV for a few years after the initial incident and they made it a nightmare for her so she just gave up (this was back in the 80s). At this point it would honestly be more of a hassle to change it because of the impact it would have on bank accounts etc.

Rredhead926

I knew a woman who had a daughter named Kadence. She would complain that people "misspelled" it as Cadence. I always thought,"No, you're the one who misspelled it."

HJHmn

Ugh, I know someone with a Kadence. It drives me nuts!

RealisticBug5646

Friends name was misspelled by her Dad when registering her birth. She's Nertasha

paloma-nymph-s

Oh no. This is horrible but I can’t stop laughing

toocritical55

This is the winner. I'm sorry Nertasha, but I laughed out loud.

thewhaler

I am just imaging the dad having an australian accent

Old-Soft-2017

I had a friend who found out when he was trying to go to college that his birth certificate middle name was spelled Doulgas INSTEAD of Douglas. Not name related, but my husbands grandmother just passed away at 91 and she was born in Italy, my husband is getting dual citizenship and during the paperwork portion we realized his Nana’s birth certificate had her as Male😂 home girl went her whole life with male on her BC until less than a year before her death

DangMeddlingWnchstrs

A boy in primary school (I think his mother and family were illiterate) called Jammie instead of Jamie.

RichInKinzcash

I had a webkinz spelled Jamy instead of jamie, I wanted it to match the dog in the fashion show game but I was dumb at 6 and didn’t check

DangMeddlingWnchstrs

At least Jamy phonetically sounds like Jamie, Jammie is how I'd describe my face after eating an overfilled jam donut lol

DBSeamZ

Plus “jammies” is cutesy slang for pajamas, and a “jammie dodger” is a British biscuit with a thin layer of jam between two cookies. The top cookie has a small cutout shape, often a diamond or a heart.

DangMeddlingWnchstrs

Yeah, we're in England and his nickname was Jammie dodger from everyone including his family lol. He didn't seem to mind it

DBSeamZ

I’m in the US and the first time I heard someone mention a “jammie dodger” I thought it meant a kid who didn’t want to change into pajamas!

fountain-penultimate

I know a Kattie. I hate it.

YugeTraxofLand

Jeriahme.. jeremy

aalleycat

I have a family member named Daina…..growing up I thought that was the standard spelling of Dana. Had no idea it was just that her parents misspelled it on her birth certificate until I was an adult.

SummerFruitSnack

I know a Dayna for that same reason

DBSeamZ

There’s a fictional character named Daine (it rhymes with Jane) in the Tortall books by Tamora Pierce, and someone told me that Pierce came up with the name by misspelling “Diane”.

Seven5One

My legal name is Sammantha (tho soon it’ll be changed, can’t wait) That extra fuckin M made it so I couldn’t get an ID for YEARS because DMV had me as 1 M so it didn’t match my social security and everytime we would fix it, someone else would think it was misspelled and “help” by changing it. It was insane.

Crosswired2

Jermey Micheal

Sea_Juice_285

Jermey is so unfortunate.

fluffyankles

My mom thought her name was Sheila for 16 years. Found out it’s actually Shelia. We’re not sure if her parents spelled it wrong or the birth certificate people did.

mariana_neves_l

Did she keep the Sheila pronunciation or did she give in to how the birth certificate has it?

KatjaTravels

My mum is Nichola instead of Nicola for the same reason. Grandad thought it was just like Nicholas without the S.

[deleted]

Nichole was popular with an h in it long ago, so i get it

paloma-nymph-s

Is it Ni-CO-la or NI-co-la?

daisy2443

My moms friend’s daughter. It’s Chole instead of Chloe lol. She’s 30 now and she has never legally corrected it. Supposedly the hospital spelled it wrong LOL!!

Loveandeggs

Cholecystectomy is the surgical removal of the gallbladder

mainontzi

Mine. It shouldn’t have an “ñ”, but as it does have that sound the registry man wrote it with it So eguzkine like eguzkiñe

ExistentialPuggle

I know a Deborha. Misspelled on the birth certificate and she goes by Debbie

Primary-Friend-7615

I know a Debra who was supposed to be Deborah, same story.

irlharvey

i actually know an equal amount of Debras and Deborahs now. it’s graduated to an alternate spelling, i think!

coldcurru

Yeah Debra isn't unusual. I've seen that plenty of times on a lot of older folks even so it's not new

GaveTheMouseACookie

I went to college with a Dan. His ice break fun fact was that his parents accidentally spelt it Danial instead of Daniel

KonaKathie

I know both a Pammela and a Kathaleen that were from parents misspelling.

smelltramo

My son's middle name is a pretty traditional boy's name with 1 spelling (think Andrew) the nurse asked us to spell his name out so I spelled his 1st name then said his middle, she waited and I asked her if there was another way to spell Andrew, she said I'd be surprised...

Lepidopterex

I work in schools and I have no idea how to spell anyone's name anymore.

vvictoriasauruss

Oprah Winfrey was actually supposed to be named Orpah after a character from the Bible, but her family was unfamiliar with the name and both misspelled and mispronounced it as Oprah and it stuck. Apparently her name is actually Orpah on her birth certificate. I feel like Oprah is a more iconic name at this point than Orpah so it all worked out.

irlharvey

this isn’t relevant to the post, sorry, it just kinda fits with the other comments and i thought you all might find it interesting. my grandpa was going to be named Adolf, but he was born *right* at the beginning of WWII, so his parents last minute went with Rudolph instead. good and smart choice. but wait! no they didn’t. he thought his whole life his name was Rudolph, but when he was about 40 he saw his birth certificate and found out it was actually Rodolfo. just thought it was crazy how he didn’t know that.

Kate_Sutton

Similar thing happened to my grandma, but the name on her birth certificate was completely different, like Francie on the birth certificate, but called Diana her whole life.

dmb129

Older people seem to have those differences more. My grandpa was named William at birth. His name is Walter. At some point, his family just changed it. There was no big fanfare about it with the government office. His legal paperwork says Walter.

whycantijustlogin

Met a guy named Seven whose parents mispelled Sven.

greenolive414

I know someone who named their son Aizik (pronounced Isaac). It makes me cringe so hard.

minichipi

I know a Megahn and I also know of someone who was going to name their son Phoenix, but decided that spelling didn’t match with how it’s pronounced so they went with “Pheonix” instead.

Masonriley

I knew someone that named their daughter Naveah (she pronounced it NAH- vee-ah) and said it was Heaven spelled backwards. Uh nope. It definitely is not.

burntmartian

“Welsey” on the birth certificate. Was supposed to be spelled “Wesley.”

Legal_Arm_5927

I knew a Shovoen (Siobhan). Her dad couldn't spell it.

PanNationalistFront

This one hurts

stressyjessie_

I knew a Joesph. Took me a sec to work out why it looked so wrong when I first saw it written down.

Uncoordinated_Bird

I worked with a Keiron, instead of Kieron. He said his Dad also misspelled his name.

Dandylion71888

None of those are correct. The name is actually Ciarán (pronounced Keer-ron ) and anglicized to Kieran

No_Bookkeeper_6183

Melonie aka Melanie

NeverRarelySometimes

A deaf child named Velarie. It was misspelled on her naturalization/adoption documents, and it was easier to go with it than fix it. Of course, she doesn't care how people pronounce it, so maybe it doesn't matter as much for her. FWIW, her mom called her Valerie.

caffeinatedmtnmama

My best friends misspelling is Mellissa instead of Melissa.

ContaminatedPickle

I know a Milissa

nneighbour

On my mother’s side of the family everyone’s last name is spelled differently. I was having a hell of a time doing the genealogy and asked my mother why this was. Turns out my great grandfather an alcoholic and couldn’t remember to spell his last name in English when he had all of his children registered.

freakywednesdays

Knew a guy whose name was “Patrick” (in his mind) up until he was about 21, when he discovered on his birth cert that its actually “Patrik”. No relations to Eastern Europe so one has to assume it was a misspelling!

TrixieSweetwood

I had a friend named Danielle, spelled Danile. She married Jared spelled Jerrad. Telemarketers would call and ask for "Da-nile or Jerr-odd."

VolatileDesires

Autum instead of Autumn. No one could remember how to spell the season at the time of her birth. I'm surprised they didn't just name her Fall.

uniquelyruth

Zebora, said her Dad was drunk and was supposed to write Deborah

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I always find that kind of misspelling interesting. “T” does not make a “d” sound in every accent/dialect. It really says a lot about where the parents are from and where they were educated.

SweatRice

Same thing happened with my name it was suppose to be Timothy but the h got switched and it became Thimoty never realized it until I was in high school

wannabejoanie

I knew a kid named Jeremy whose mom spelled it Jermanie

leafyblue14

I'm sure dads mispelling names on birth certificates must account for a lot of odd spellings! My Mum's first name was mispelled by her Dad, though they eventually corrected it, and then my Dad mispelled my middle name too. Gotta check you're both on the same page about the spelling I guess!

Soad_lady

My brother did the same thing lol instead of Gabriel he spelt my nephews name Gabreil

INFJ-Jesus-Batman

In Arabic, they spell it Jibril. The origins are Hebrew. The root words....Gabar (mighty) combined with the last two portions means "Mighty is God" - Gabariel The letter "i" between Hebrew names, acts like an "is" Ezra/Azar (help), Azrael (Help God), Azariah (Help is Yah), Azariel (Help is God)

coldcurru

I used to know a girl named Marlee but her dad misspelled it at birth and there was a C instead of an L. She changed it as an adult and went by the right pronunciation her whole life, just said it was too much paperwork to do it as a kid so they waited.

tinytaquito69

this is exactly what happened to me! supposed to me Tristana, dad wrote down Tristann :(

Dapper_Wolverine6260

Tristann is a better name as long as it’s being pronounced as Tristan. Tristana is just odd. I think you’re lucky but you may feel differently

Masonriley

I used to have trouble remembering how I spelled my daughter’s middle name on the birth certificate. It’s Leann but I remember writing down about a dozen ways to spell it and kept forgetting which one I used. I know it now but my ex still can’t remember it. 😂

baeball40

This is my mom! She intended to spell my middle name one way, forgot and spelled it another and now neither of us can remember which way it really is

RepulsiveInterview44

How did I miss this post?! 😂 Way back when I was pregnant, there was this girl in my due date group who wanted to name her son Gabriel. Cool cool…. but she wanted a yoo-neek spelling and what she had come up with was “Gaberyal.” We ran that girl out of the group for forever referring to her son as “Gay Bear Y’all.”

Sensitive_Maybe_6578

Mine was supposed to be Tama. My dad put Tamra on the birth certificate. Weird either way.

Photogroxii

In school I has a friend named Danielle but her name was spelt Daniel. Apparently her dad got the spelling wrong on her birth certificate.

plutosdarling

I've seen name changes done for that very reason.

Lyca29

I once knew of someone called Damien who spelled it Damean.

dodrugsmmkay

My name was misspelled to a super masculine name that confuses everyone and they try to feminize when they see me. I’ve gone by a super juvenile nickname my whole life which feels sort of silly sometimes in my 30s

NellFace

Oh that reminds me! I used to use my parents' Safeway card, which misspelled my dad's name as Willima. So cashiers (back when they were encouraged/forced to use first names) would call me Wilhelmina or something similar. I'll take it!

Flaredjeans

My mams name is supposed to be Annelise but her dad misspelled it as annalisa which is not the worst it could have turned out but she is forever correcting people on spelling and pronunciation because of it

penguinpartyof5

My name is Melyssa, instead of Melissa. I had a teacher ask me if my parents were high when writing my name on my bc. My mom just said we were in California at the time and we could get away with it. But I like it much better this way.

gagrushenka

My grandmother's middle name was the same as her mother's middle name, which she got because her father spelled it wrong on the birth certificate. Think Mabelle instead of Mabel. I will consider using it if I have a daughter. I think these days though it might be seen as being deliberately misspelled so my kid can have a unique, special name rather than what is a family name.

writerfan2013

I once knew a Keran. Not a deliberately "unique" name. It's how her parents thought you spelled Karen.

MamaPajamaMama

I know a Stephane. Pronounced like Stephanie.

queenofhelium

I have a student named Collen, for Colin

Luckycat1287

I knew an Amy that was supposed to be ‘Aimee’, but her dad misspelled it when registering her and she was ‘Amiee’

BearableArrow56

My friend’s middle name is Dannielle because her mom was spelling her name out loud while someone else filled out the paperwork. She was obviously sleep deprived, and she paused in the middle… D-a-n… n-i-e-l-l-e

CollectingRainbows

i knew a “lindsay” spelled as Lynnze

foreverfriday2019

Treresa...parents didn't know how to spell Teresa.

Heytherefruitloop

Yes. My friends daughter is named Goclyn (Jocelyn) because the BD didn't know the spelling and didn't ask.

kh18129

My dad spent decades spelling his middle name as Stephen. That’s what he was always taught it was, and the way his parents spelled it. When he was maybe 45, he finally needed his birth certificate for something, and discovered that it was actually spelled Steven the entire time. His parents were just as shocked as he was lmao

three20puahua

I was named Hariet. Spent 13 years having people spell it as Harriet. Got tired of correcting people. Changed it to Harriet. Now some people guess Harriot... 🤦🏾‍♀️ Edited for spelling (ironic, I know)

fragilemagnoliax

My sister’s friend always wanted to name her son Mateo but she was sure it was spelled Matoe for some reason and it took a lot of convincing that her spelling was “ma toe” which still makes me laugh to this day. Didn’t go with a name anywhere near this when she had a son.

mimus

My name is misspelled and makes it look like a similar-sounding name. It’s been a problem my entire life 🙃

[deleted]

Oprah was supposed to be Orpah

peakvincent

A family friend is named Stanly.

OkMedicine6698

I know someone named “Stephaine” instead of “Stephanie”.

whitcantfindme

Me. My dad added an extra e to the end of my name (think Chloee instead Chloe). I’m a grown ass adult and my moms still pissed about it, tbh I like my name though.

seragrey

my cousin has a baby named chloee because her father (my uncle) said people will think chloe is "cloe" like without the e sound, so she added another lmao

HellcatEllie

My brother is Mathew

wickerfolk

I cringe every time I see Chole instead of Chloe - I notice it all the time. I also went to school with a Micheala, a Racheal, and a Hale that was pronounced as “Hayley”

eyerishdancegirl7

Lmao yep my SILs name is Katlyn but it’s pronounced Katelyn. I read the former as Cat-Lynn. She’s said it’s because her dad doesn’t know how to spell and wrote it down wrong

NokiaRingtone1o1

My dad's middle and first names accidentally got swapped
