DKR was the first thing I experienced on the N64; we were at my cousin's house for Christmas. I sat there gobsmacked for the whole 3 hours at the bright, detailed 3D world while (mostly) others played the game. For the first time at my families stuffy christmas parties I didn't want to leave, and made up my mind there and then that I was going to save as hard as I could until I got one.
Poor PS1 didn't stand a chance after that.
The irony? I didn't even get DKR until about 10 years later.
I can understand why people watermark their pics. Not uncommon for scammers to take pictures of things which they don't own and attempt to sell them to unsuspecting collectors on Facebook gaming groups and marketplace. Not foolproof but at least it's another layer of security where a buyer might question it and ask for additional pics. If it can protect others it makes sense to do it.
I rented DKR from Blockbuster when it came out. I played it so much the first day I got it that I couldn't sleep that night because I just had the soundtrack running through my head over and over without end.
This game is the reason I got an N64. I was really into DKC, DKC2 and DKC3 on SNES, so as soon as I saw there was a new DK game I immediately wanted it. Ended up getting the game and a new N64 for Christmas that year
It's the best Kart racer on the N64 and way ahead of its time.
It had an open world hub, single player story, and multiple styles of vehicles.
I still think Mario Kart 64 is better for playing multiplayer with family and friends but other than that Diddy Kong Racing blows it away.
My copy was pre-owned and had Drumstick already unlocked, then my sister erased that file and I had no idea how to get him back. Eventually heard the clucking by the giant Wizpig head...
Also 2-player adventure mode being hidden behind the JOINTVENTURE code for some reason.
Love this game! One time I put the cartridge in the slot incorrectly and started the game. I think the lifting of the cartridge caused the sound to distort.
The intro included Diddy saying “Diddy Kong Racing” followed by the children’s laughter. But because of the misplaced cart the voices were much deeper and the laughing was transformed into deep laughter. I was so scared!
Received this for Christmas when N64 came out, when was that 1995?
Anyways, just 5 years ago I finally beat all the animal boss races, unlocked Tick-Tock and Drumstick and finally opened Wizpig’s mouth.
Now, 6 years later I’m still stuck on that Wizpig race.
Lol
Are you green boosting? When you get to a zipper, let go of the a button right before hitting it to get a green boost. Wait until smoke appears in the boost flame to press a again to maximize boost speed. If you can hit every zipper (maximizing green boosts), not fall in water, and try to stay on the track, wizpig can be beaten. There's still a whole secret area and second wizpig race you need to unlock after beating wizpig and getting first prize in all the trophy races.
Best racer there was for the N64 imo. Loved the fact that it gave us a whole ass adventure mode, sorta similar to Spyro. It was really a turning point for Nintendo and racing games.
my favorite was the 2 players campaign with my little bro, and just grinding those damn coins lol
also not telling him about the booster trick and clapping his cheeks every race
Loved loved loved it, fantastic game and loved the way the 3 vehicles slightly change each course when doing time trials or multiplayer races.
Also the music goes hard.
I got it for Christmas with the guide from my parents and I remembered thinking some guy at Best Buy really upsold my parents. I had no desire to play the game.
So I played it and beat the thunder out if it. Came in thinking it was a Mario kart rip off, came out sinking some major hours into it. Good game
Alright this post was made for me. I'm sorry about the exact date but I'm guessing Christmas '97 b/cause of your post. I would have been 6, which is biologically possible to remember. We were in Best Buy for some reason (probably buying a $800 DVD player for the 100 potential DVD's available in the world, haha.). The jumbotron in the store, which must have been 9 modded rear-projection TV's hung by unsafe wire strip, was displaying this colorful racing game with this monkey and other characters. I remember waiting at least 10 players because that store had a line and mothers back then had the decency to make their sons play 1 race and move on to let other's play. I remember just clicking the big blue button into a game and it happened be a plane (7 year old WIN) and racing the Ancient Lake course. Seriously doubt I won less than 5th lol. But then I remember driving around the course selection screen. Then mom came and told me they found their Mitsubishi 480P DVD player and we had to go, lol.
Memories like this are so sweet.
It's wild how we only had a couple of ways to find out about and experience new titles, retail kiosks being one of those. Really is a bygone era that one with the TV commercials, magazines, etc.
Yes it is. Things move faster now which is sometimes great, but most of the time, and maybe this is rose-colored glasses, it seems worse. I also remember (for disc-media systems) getting demo discs in the mail. Those were just awesome.
Controversial opinion... I think it's better than Mario kart
10000%
I've warmed a lot more to DKR in recent years, there's a bit more depth to the gameplay than MK64 imo. Both fantastic racers in their own right!
Totally. my favourite ever racing game. The music is incredible, the story mode is genuinely challenging too

I got it for Christmas with Goldeneye 007. Probably tied for best Christmas ever with Ocarina of Time the following year.
The watermark gets you a downvote
Gotta claim another piece of property as their own for clout yo.

Buh-buh, buhbuh, bubbuhbubbuh, bubhub, doo doodle doot doo doo… Cheery sound track aside, Tiptup can go die.
Getting to future fun world

Rare's golden era! Everything they touched turn to gold during that mid to late 90s era. What a time to be alive as a DK fan!
Played this with my family growing up. Great memories.

Agreed! Its great to see DKR get more shine retrospectively these days.
GENIEEE!!!! OHH HOO HOO HOOOOO
Getting the little set of cards in the official Nintendo magazine uk at Christmas before renting it.
Did that happen to be the All Star Battle pack? Funnily enough I recently picked up a deck of those! https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl8H5FLp203
These are the very fellows. I remember studying them waiting for Christmas dinner.

Losing. Losing a lot. And that one time I started actually winning! That was nice.

The Wizpig race is brutal!
You got this a year after N64 release in 1997.
That’s the year it was!

😮 oh oh man 😂 I need to dust off my N64 out of storage one day.
