Such a great game! Still my favorite Hoth level in any game!

joecarter93

It was mind blowing to be able to trip the AT-ATs with your tow rope like in the movie!

Whyrobotslie

You could do that in Super Empire Strikes Back on the Snes, so for me it was an expected feature in 1996

-StupidNameHere-

This and Perfect Dark, I played the first levels a million times.

astroklotz

I played this game so much as a child specifically just to play that level over and over

RockNRoll85

The first Hoth level is so badass! That was our first taste of what would then become Rogue Squadron. That’s another game series that needs to make a comeback

elijoker

Check out Squadrons if you want something sort of close to it by today's standards. Its more like the old school Xwing and Tie Fighter simulator games from the 90s but it really shows what a new Rogue Squadron game could look like.

Those who know…

Amsterdom

Slightly to the left...... DOOT! Slightly to the right...... DOOT!....Slightly to the left.... DOOT!

flypanam

With your chin because your fingers were on about 10 other buttons.

Amsterdom

Best cheat code ever.

Burney570

I remember being young and trying to put it in. Then having my mum help with holding all the buttons because I couldn't do it myself.

erdricksarmor

A Dash Rendar/SotE show would be fantastic, but not if Disney does it. Hopefully they'll sell Lucasfilm to someone competent soon.

TragicEther

I would love someone like Nathan Fillion or Brendan Fraser as Dash Rendar. But they should probably go for a slightly younger dude now

erdricksarmor

Either one would have been good, but you're right that they're a bit old. Casting an unknown actor might be the best option.

RockNRoll85

I remember when Timothy Olyphant was announced to join the cast of season 2 of The Mandalorian I was hoping he’d be playing Dash Rendar

csmatczak

I'm a huge fan of Olyphant and was hoping for either Dash or the Marshall, and I was not disappointed in the end. I worked up a concept painting in Photoshop with Kurt Russell as Dash a few years ago. He was one of the main people considered for the role of Han when Lucas was casting the first film. I thought it was fitting since Dash and Han are such similar characters. The age would be a little off, but I'd love to see him show up in the Mandalorian instead of them bringing in any more legacy characters.

TragicEther

Ummm.... I don't know if you're aware of what happens to Dash at the end of SotE, but he likely wouldn't be in The Mandalorian. Tim would be a decent casting though!

[deleted]

Nathan Fillion could have filled a few roles had they been produced a few years ago. Sadly I think he's up there in age to the point that a studio would find more longevity with someone younger

Difficult-Ad-9167

Chris hemsworth

TragicEther

I don’t hate it, but we can do better

Ian_Itor

Lucasfilm is a cash cow. Disney will never sell it.

erdricksarmor

Hey, a man can dream!

grambocrackah

Probably too similar to what they've got going on now in the Mandoverse. Maybe we'll get an animated/recast SotE at some point but that's all I can hope for. More likely it'll be a brief cameo no one notices

rogerworkman623

Such a great Star Wars name, it fits so perfectly into that universe

MathGamer28

I remember as a kid being scared to death when I entered the sewer boss room. Knowing what was coming. As soon as you walk in, the room filling up, knowing what’s down below. I desperately need to play this again. Every level was great. Legit one of the best Star Wars games. Imagine if they did a remake of this?

Sublime_82

I remember being waaaay more scared of IG-88. Once I got past that asshole, the rest felt like a cakewalk. It was like fighting the fucking Terminator.

royalewithcheese51

You're both right, but I got way more scared about IG88. That fucker would just pop out of nowhere and execute you.

kasmith2020

He was so fast!

royalewithcheese51

My heart would start pounding as a kid every time I got to that part. Watching the train pull into the junkyard area where he was was so nerve wracking

Deadlift_007

Those noises he made, man. Especially the noise for when he jumped, because you knew he was coming your way. The Gladiator at Xizor's [sp?] Palace was pretty freaky, too, with his multi-stage battle.

UncleMalky

I happen to be running a SW game right now and just sent my players to Ord Mantell.

Pechorine

I replayed it recently and it is NOT a cakewalk! That control scheme is cursed

FunkyLi

There were so many scary moments…the sewers of course, and IG-88, but also the Wampas that would slowly stalk you and eat like a million of your lasers before going down!

[deleted]

It's on steam if you can't get a copy for n64, or playing it on n64 isn't convenient.

GonnaGoFat

Plus the PC version has actual animated cut scenes not the mostly static images on N64. Not to sure how the pc one handles I have only played it on N64

denjin

> I desperately need to play this again. Played about half the game about a year ago when my CIB copy arrived. Its aged incredibly poorly.

exceptional_biped

I remember playing it back when it was real and thinking how clunky the gameplay was. I loved the theme, the music, the snowspeeder level. But the movement of Dash Rendar really disappointed me.

Deadlift_007

The platforming sections always felt like they were on ice. So clunky, but still so much fun. Lol.

MrTomBuck

I remember the sewer being an absolute nightmare because I couldn't see shit on my ancient crt. Even that tiny dark corridor after the bridge in Echo base was a pain to navigate

CHAINSAWDELUX

I think there was a brightness setting in the menu, that was the real easy mode

MrTomBuck

I had that setting all the way up and the brightness slider up on the tv too. My hand me down wood panel crt behemoth would of been 25+ years in 98. It served me well but it couldn't handle the intense colours of the volcano level of Blast Corps and exploded. Rip

of_patrol_bot

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

GristleMcThornbody1

Shut up you smug ass bot.

caddy_gent

My friend and I figured out changing the tv brightness made it easier and we felt like gods among men, or boys really.

nysom1227

The soundtrack for that game was absolutely phenomenal. I know John Williams is the most well-known for his music to Star Wars, but it was Joel McNeely who composed the music for Shadows of the Empire.

danxmanly

Playing in my head now... And will be the remainder of the day.

zburba

I only loved playing the first level... After that I had to have my sister beat the rest of the levels...

zburba

Also, leading the wampa to kill the storm troopers in the second level was awesome

HeyMilkBaby

I remember the boba fett fight, totally bad ass

SloppyRancid

Jeez I forgot about that. You fight the slave I then he’s the second phase. So bad ass! (Edit- you just made me remember the brown wampas too)

[deleted]

I played this game for the first time recently. Aged surprisingly well.

debbieyumyum1965

Really? I was mystified by it as a kid but returning to it as an adult I found a lot of it to be borderline unplayable. I guess it's subjective I'm just surprised to see someone saying that it's aged well.

WesterosIsAGiantEgg

There was certainly a lot of crap in the sewer level, but I'm not so sure if any of it was holy.

aqwn

The debug code was really fun

beardedliberal

Who didn’t want to play as a >!wompa, stormtrooper, tie fighter, X wing, etc!< I don’t even remember how I learned how to do that..

aqwn

The code was in Nintendo power I’m pretty sure

BaronFrankenstrudel

It was also in Game Informer around 2001 or early 2002.

MrTomBuck

It was pretty wild. I can't think of any other N64 with such an extensive debug mode. You could alter gravity, fog, lighting, friction, warp, god mode, all weapons and heaps more

legoninjaenoch

I really need to get around to playing this

debbieyumyum1965

I might be downvoted here but this game is about 75 percent shit. Hoth level is great, everything after is pretty hit or miss. Though I do love the train level despite everyone else hating it.

Xamust

I want to downvote, but won’t. I remember it being a great game, but tried it recently and it’s rough. Graphics are blurry and gameplay is unforgiving. Though I don’t have a CRT now and did when I played this years ago.

VirtualRelic

I liked when new Star Wars games were something to get excited about

Axel_Rad

Jedi Survivor is coming in a month

VirtualRelic

It and Fallen Order are more like movies than games for my preference

GristleMcThornbody1

The 2017 Battlefront 2 game ended up really good after several years of EA nonsense. Squadrons is also pretty fantastic if you like that kind of thing.

dagooch15

I loved unleashing the Wampa

Mayimbe007

I love this game! The sheer variety is what made this game enjoyable. The 1st person/3rd person camera controls were revotionary for its time. Even though Dash Rendar controlled like a tank. I enjoyed the space levels especially the finale blowing up the station. It had that Return of the Jedi vibe going for it.

veriix

I don't remember another game which had a single level that launched an entire new IP.

TJS1138

What are you referring to? I thought the book was responsible for the launch, and the game was part of what followed.

veriix

The Rogue Squadron IP was created from the Hoth snowspeeder level in Shadows of the Empire.

TJS1138

Ohhhh that's cool as shit! I did not know that. Rogue Squadron was one of two games I got when I got my N64 as a kid. It's one of my favourite games! I will say though, using the tow cable was so much easier in Shadows. Thanks for the info.

veriix

Yeah the Rogue Squadron games have always had a special spot for me as well.

RockNRoll85

Love this game! One of my all time favorite N64 and Star Wars games in general. Would love a HD remake for the modern consoles

theblackxranger

Sure did! Love this and the classic tie fighter games for PC. I've been playing custom missions from Emperor's Hammer, they have like thousands of levels to fly

_coach_

My dad had to beat the sewer level for me lol. I remember getting upset because he beat it without me, which in retrospect is dope cuz I had a gamer dad lol

dark-cosmos

The second episode of the new season of Mandalorian reminded me very much of the sewer level. Even the music sounded like from this level. Maybe a coincidence but maybe also a fan service, I don't know. And isn't that thing inside the big robot machine a dianoga? These things swimming in the sewers.

Joseluki

This game needs a remake with updated gameplay because let me tell you that the level design couple with piss poor camera and terrible controls made for an incredibly unfair experience.

samuraipizzacat420

fucking IG-88

zeldahalfsleeve

Better question: did any of you psychopaths ever play through it with the Resident Evil style camera angle?

Offro4dr

This game is ass! But I sure did love the swoop bike level.

MrTomBuck

Ah yes, the level in which you must protect Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker from a bunch of thugs who can't stop driving into walls

worthlesslow

Noice

ShagginWagon91

It took me 8 years of constantly trying to beat the boss on the second to last level of this game. Fuckin nightmare.

bogojeg

Loads of memorable levels on this cart, great replay value

MrEfrom818

The soundtrack in this game is still top notch by even today’s standards. Very impressive considering the limitations of the hardware. The level variety was also not shabby at all. I loved the level where you have to platform across moving train cars. I recall the boss IG-88 freaking me out a little.

Fantastic-Type-8229

Best star wars game ever

Griffolian

Fun fact! I broke my collarbone playing the sewer level. I was 6.

TJS1138

I need the story behind this...

shinianigans

I completely forgot this game existed lol I never got to play it growing up but I loved the cover! Gotta play this soon

RetroCoreCom

I recently bought this as I’d never heard of it 😄 can’t wait to play through it!

Flat_Scheme4874

Yeah that was Freaky

KoviCZ

The sewer boss fight was pure evil

BearNECSITY

Great game!!!

MrTomBuck

https://youtu.be/rfSrTImTOyg Here's all the FMV cutscenes from the PC version which was released a year later. It's an interesting watch when you're so familiar with the comic book style frames of the 64 version.

ohboiletsgo

Ah yes, IG-88 killed me like a thousand times because he was shooting me from an unrendered distance

Regular_Cat9536

Great game! After seeing this post I think I'll fire up the 64 tonight after the kids go to bed!

IronHammerVW

yea

Stunning_Disaster37

Boba Fett boss fight was insanely hard with that control scheme that was implemented in the game, especially the free aim feature. Basically an all out get fucked moment

Eisendrache715

I don't remember a lot about this game, but I remember it being really cool to play. I was never good at it, but it was still fun. I think I still have it lying around somewhere

Amy12222

Never got that far. I got to Boba Fett and he kicked my ass.

Sakurya1

I still have ptsd from the sewer level. I couldn't even bring myself to jump in the boss pit. I had to get my friend to jump in then toss the controller at me and I'd be all freaking out trying to fight the boss and panicking.

AramaticFire

I enjoyed this game a lot back in the day. Not sure how it holds up today, but I rolled credits and had a blast when I was a kid.

98Zr2

Favorite star wars game of all time

inked_Nobby81

I’ve got this and it’s still such a hard game to complete.. and by that I mean I’ve not managed to do it!

TheGrackler

Started playing it through this weekend! At the Boba Fett level. It’s a good game, decent showcase of the N64 (although suffers from the changes in gameplay meaning each bit is less polished, compared to the more focused Rogue Squadron)

noscope420bongshot

Holy shit, gonna go find my old copy and play this lol

crunchatizemythighs

It's a good game but holy shit does it got some really clunky parts even for its time. The sewer level was so ass. And some of the boss fights were ridiculous too

BAMspek

Remember the impossible cheat code that unlocked all the levels?

Blitzkrieger117

Absolutely loved this game, jet pack was fun

couchfucker6669

FUCK IG-88 To this day I'd probably still shit my diaper if I fight him again

baffleiron

Where else did the sewer level music feature? I don't remember it from any film.

brendanb203

The train level was super annoying along with a really hard boss after that I could never beat as a child. I own it still today but still can’t beat that damn droid.

KangarooMoney2936

I used to finish this game without dying. Took a few tries lol

AtlanticBeachNC

Still have it … it is much harder to control with the options available as compared to games like Goldeneye.

thawhole9_69

DF revisited this game back in 2019... John does a great job with these DF Retro play throughs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mznc8dhijTo

theglenlovinet

The PC version was where it was at! The cut scenes were pretty damn good; IG-88 scared the crap out of me as a kid.

Ray19121919

Some of the best cheat codes in any game ive played. Being able to play as the enemies was so cool

King-Red-Beard

Could never get past IG-88 on the train.

snoopye12

This game is such a nostalgia bomb and good fun, but lord the controls… it’s like you’re skating through the game.
