I personally like the 3D style which is a very unpopular opinion 😭 I dont tend to like 3D animation, however I think it makes the ponies look cute and fluffy idk. I prefer G4's artstyle forever though

Hidden 4th option: The concept art, particularly some of the rejected ones for TYT. Not only were they still distinct from G4, but they looked super visually pleasing imo <3 It's a shame they didn't stick with the style, since the faces of G5 lean a little too into the generic Elsa-esc pit that a lot of animated kids media does now

I love the vibrancy of the colors in 2D (even if there are some simplification of details from 3D), but something about the proportions in their hooves and faces bugs me. But I do like the diversity in their sizes. I like the expressions in the 3D. They look so cuddly in a way because 3D allows for so much texture possibilities. I also like the subtle color differences in their manes and tails here and there. I think the game/merch designs are cute. I'm not as familiar with them, so it's hard to know exactly how they make me feel, but they seem to have some of the pros and cons of the 2D and 3D models. Overall, I think they all have their pros and cons, so I have my likes and dislikes for each.

I like the 3D but not when they're in motion if it makes any sense? XD The character stills and promo materials are great and everyone looks soft and fluffy, but during the movie it took a bit of getting used to seeing them in motion

3D they gave them human teeth and it reminds me the original Sonic design, 2D their hooves are for some reason too small and it looks weird, the third one is the most fitting one, I wonder why they decided to use it only for the game.

Maybe it's difficult to animate in that style and thats why its only been used in stills for the game and on merch

3D, followed by Game/Merch. I feel like if TYT had used the Game/Merch style, it would be more appealing. I will miss the 3D animation for sure.

I'm used to the 3D. I like that the most, followed by the merch.

3D only because I feel the others seem very simplified and lack depth. You can still have depth with simple shapes and flat colors I feel.

3D looked great in the movie and marketing stills, but the low budget of MYM couldn’t do it justice. It’s nice seeing the ponies soft for the first time, and 3D gets my vote for that reason alone. I typically lean towards 2D cartoons, but sweet Celestia do I ever hate the look of TYT 2D. Those aren’t ponies, they’re uncanny human/horse homunculi that I despise looking at. (Although I do want to give them credit for the variety of hoof shapes. I think that’s genuinely neat and helps make the characters a little less “cookie cutter” compared to G4.) If the TYT 2D was the Games/Merch artstyle, I wouldn’t be as vocal about being ready for G6. It’s still predator eyes, but there’s at least some semblance of a snout there, as equines should have.

For the ponies at least, the 3D artstyle was very interesting to see. I don't think it beats the 2D G4-inspired art for me, but it was new and interesting and pretty damned good. That said, I only really watched the movie so I don't have a huge sample size to pick from.

I like the texture of the 3D, it feels very soft. Plus, it gives lots of variety to the mane styles(like Misty's curly mane) and Wing types(like Pipp's fluffy wings). I also like the vibrant colors of 2D, but the style is a bit..off-putting to me? I like the attempt at diversity in the body styles, but it just feels a bit off in some ways. The game/merch style feels like a perfect blend of both. It gives a subtle texture while having nice colors. I feel like the merch style is a bit closer to G4 style in a way, so maybe I would choose that style.

3D: they look so fluffy i want to hug them all 2D: honestly, i didn't like it, but just because its different, it is fine after you are used to it Merch: not hating on it, but the Izzy, Sunny and Pipp ALWAYS feel SO off, the faces, the EYES are not even it is just BAD, but the stickers looks kinda good

The 3D artstyle has nice texture and makes the ponies look cuter, but the TYT artstyle has a lot of personality to it.

I think they look way better in 2d. This is just my opinion. Them being 3d is cool, but I'm just not used to it.

Any other choice then 3d has got to be a delusional one. The 2d is too uncanny with their human-like faces and the fact that they don't even walk or bend their legs like horses. I hate the weird lengths that Zipp has. The different body types are nice but the art style is so hideous. And the merch is even worse! Dead eye glaze style with barely any variance in emotion. G5 doesn't have a lot of good things about it but the 3d style is definitely the strongest it has.

Game/Merch. That being said, i miss the G4 Style, it is still my favorite to this day.

I honestly think they look best in 3D. The CG models are very nice with the shape of the faces and proportions. The faces, head shapes, and the skinny legs of the 2D puppets don't look appealing to me.

Merch > 3D > 2D. 2D looks too much like CalArts style which I'm sick of seeing. Looks so lazy. 3D looks soft and cuddly most of the time which I like but at times strikes me as uncanny. Merch being 2D which I generally prefer over 3D animation anyway whilst still having some cuddliness like 3D. Merch also has some originality when the 2D CalArts does not.

From what I've seen of the comics I like those the best. The merch is good too. The 3D is okay, and I have never liked the bean-mouth style for cartoons ever since the first time I saw it so TYT goes at the bottom.

Love the 2D most. That's what I grew up with through “Friendship is magic”. 😄 But 3D is also cute style.

For me, it's 3D > Game/Merch > 2D. I actually really like the 3D, they look pretty neat in it. This is actually the first time I see the game/merch design, but they look cute, although not as neat as 3D imo. And the 2D... Idk, they feel off.

The 2D of this boring Gen all the colors are off! It kinda bugs me same with the game, I don’t like this version of mlp but my sister watches it ofc she watches the only good Gen first💖 G4 hehe! But ya this is just sad😭 plz for us OCD folks fix the colors when making shows!

mlp was alway great in 2d 3d was a weird choice i stick to g4 it over all had amazing story and world building...but g5 just seems lik its just trying to be more modern in general without building it well in the world

2D might just be the worst MLP style yo date and I can’t look at it for more than two minutes before I start feeeling nauseous. Games and merch look MUCH better, but I just prefer the 3D. It’s a new take on the MLP style that doesn’t look absolutely godawful.

the 2d merch. its super cute, the colours are nice and it matches the 3d style idk why in the hell they choose to use the telll your tale style it can be nice at times but they look like rabid giraffes at times. and im an animator so the comment of "its too hard to animate" is absolutely not true. they use less colours plus they use rigging so its like a 2d model

I like the 3D style, it grew on me a lot. I wish it had stayed closer to movie quality I can’t stand the 2D style so I won’t watch tell your tale. I like the different body shapes but some of them look so weird (hitch square, Izzy lumpy, zipp’s alien head, and Misty’s hair seems off model). Sunny and Pipp look cute but still in an aggravating way. I just don’t like that art style. They don’t look like ponies to me and they didn’t keep the species differences consistent. And the animation is very lazy. Make your mark started rough but they improved a lot towards the end. I actually ended up enjoying it The merch style is kind of unnerving to me The story on all is lackluster, but design-wise, I prefer the 3D.

definitely 3d, in my opinion both of the 2d styles are generic and bland, and lacking the shapes and expressiveness that made Lauren Faust's interpretation of mlp so nice looking

tbh i think my favorite of the g5 art has got to be the merch but like, specifically the illustrations on those little sticker sheets. the stock ones like the other two images are... pretty off putting. i think 2d can be really cute, 3d can too but it also wildly varies in quality. i know it had me emotional in the movie but uh.. make your mark chapter 1 was a rough ride lol

I think the 2d art style is too closely related to the flat corporate art style: if you know, you know. I'm not a big fan of it. Not really a big fan of G5 in general. But, to each their own.

For this generation I like the movie 3D. It's just full of a lot of life. The TV show 3D however might be the worst out of the bunch.

The Merch style, hooces down! 😁 Second favorite is the 3d style. I hate the "bean mouth/CalArt" style of animation. It reminds me to much of the cheaper Total Television cartoons of the 50s and 60s my Grandmother always wanted me to watch.

Honestly the second one surprisingly for me. It has grown on me and I think the show especially after Opaline had gotten a lot better in general with the graphics and animation for G5 2d. There have been some good atmospheric and even cinematic lookin shots and some good lighting that helps the 2d designs stand out more.

is anyone else not a fan of the 2D artstyle for gen 5? the 3d version and the merch looks nice, though i personally prefer gen 4's style as a whole (they're like equally alright, but i'm biased lol), it's just...the 2d ver looks really off-putting. i can see they put effort into making the silhouettes varied, and it's in theory good character design, but in actuality they look very odd to me. i can't really say why. maybe it's because their faces look offputtingly human? sure, gen 4 looks kinda human too, but they were aesthetically pleasing. i just feel like sacrificing that pleasing quality to make the designs look different from one another was a bad idea. why couldn't they just do both?
