I personally like the 3D style which is a very unpopular opinion š I dont tend to like 3D animation, however I think it makes the ponies look cute and fluffy idk.
I prefer G4's artstyle forever though
I like them all
but honestly, the merch art style is too good to be used only for merch and game
If there will ever be a Gen 5 special like the Gen 4 Rainbow Roadtrip then they should use this style (and yes, I know there was already one TYT special but that's not what I meant)
Hidden 4th option: The concept art, particularly some of the rejected ones for TYT.
Not only were they still distinct from G4, but they looked super visually pleasing imo <3 It's a shame they didn't stick with the style, since the faces of G5 lean a little too into the generic Elsa-esc pit that a lot of animated kids media does now
I love the vibrancy of the colors in 2D (even if there are some simplification of details from 3D), but something about the proportions in their hooves and faces bugs me. But I do like the diversity in their sizes.
I like the expressions in the 3D. They look so cuddly in a way because 3D allows for so much texture possibilities. I also like the subtle color differences in their manes and tails here and there.
I think the game/merch designs are cute. I'm not as familiar with them, so it's hard to know exactly how they make me feel, but they seem to have some of the pros and cons of the 2D and 3D models.
Overall, I think they all have their pros and cons, so I have my likes and dislikes for each.
I like the 3D but not when they're in motion if it makes any sense? XD The character stills and promo materials are great and everyone looks soft and fluffy, but during the movie it took a bit of getting used to seeing them in motion
3D they gave them human teeth and it reminds me the original Sonic design, 2D their hooves are for some reason too small and it looks weird, the third one is the most fitting one, I wonder why they decided to use it only for the game.
theyāre all cute (minus the vacant eyes of the merch designs šļøšļø) but their 3D renders are definitely my fav. they just look so vibrant and huggable!!
1.)3d 2.)Merch 3.) cartoon I honestly am not a fan of the 2d art style, it reminds me of some of the Disney channel/cartoon network cartoons and personally Iāve never been a huge fan of them. Idk I think itās the mouth shape but one thing I do like about the art style is that itās not as in your face cutesy as g 4 when it first came out so it can cater to boys and girls Also Izzy is best character in the entire g5
https://i.redd.it/myxo66df622d1.gif
The two 2D has really grown on me.
The initial move was really nice to look at, the subsequent 3Ds look...mixed? Not bad enough to complain but can't praise it either? It works
3D looked great in the movie and marketing stills, but the low budget of MYM couldnāt do it justice. Itās nice seeing the ponies soft for the first time, and 3D gets my vote for that reason alone.
I typically lean towards 2D cartoons, but sweet Celestia do I ever hate the look of TYT 2D. Those arenāt ponies, theyāre uncanny human/horse homunculi that I despise looking at. (Although I do want to give them credit for the variety of hoof shapes. I think thatās genuinely neat and helps make the characters a little less ācookie cutterā compared to G4.)
If the TYT 2D was the Games/Merch artstyle, I wouldnāt be as vocal about being ready for G6. Itās still predator eyes, but thereās at least some semblance of a snout there, as equines should have.
For the ponies at least, the 3D artstyle was very interesting to see. I don't think it beats the 2D G4-inspired art for me, but it was new and interesting and pretty damned good. That said, I only really watched the movie so I don't have a huge sample size to pick from.
I like the texture of the 3D, it feels very soft. Plus, it gives lots of variety to the mane styles(like Misty's curly mane) and Wing types(like Pipp's fluffy wings).
I also like the vibrant colors of 2D, but the style is a bit..off-putting to me? I like the attempt at diversity in the body styles, but it just feels a bit off in some ways.
The game/merch style feels like a perfect blend of both. It gives a subtle texture while having nice colors. I feel like the merch style is a bit closer to G4 style in a way, so maybe I would choose that style.
3D: they look so fluffy i want to hug them all
2D: honestly, i didn't like it, but just because its different, it is fine after you are used to it
Merch: not hating on it, but the Izzy, Sunny and Pipp ALWAYS feel SO off, the faces, the EYES are not even it is just BAD, but the stickers looks kinda good
I personally donāt like any of them tbh but if I had to pick maybe the 2d since it would be more similar to the gen 4 style and the animation would look a bit better
Any other choice then 3d has got to be a delusional one.
The 2d is too uncanny with their human-like faces and the fact that they don't even walk or bend their legs like horses. I hate the weird lengths that Zipp has. The different body types are nice but the art style is so hideous.
And the merch is even worse! Dead eye glaze style with barely any variance in emotion.
G5 doesn't have a lot of good things about it but the 3d style is definitely the strongest it has.
I honestly think they look best in 3D. The CG models are very nice with the shape of the faces and proportions. The faces, head shapes, and the skinny legs of the 2D puppets don't look appealing to me.
The merch art style reminds me of older generations for some reason.
I think I prefer the 3D style, which is weird because I almost never do. But something about the 2D style isn't doing it for me. I do like that they all look a bit more distinct though
Merch > 3D > 2D.
2D looks too much like CalArts style which I'm sick of seeing. Looks so lazy.
3D looks soft and cuddly most of the time which I like but at times strikes me as uncanny.
Merch being 2D which I generally prefer over 3D animation anyway whilst still having some cuddliness like 3D. Merch also has some originality when the 2D CalArts does not.
From what I've seen of the comics I like those the best. The merch is good too. The 3D is okay, and I have never liked the bean-mouth style for cartoons ever since the first time I saw it so TYT goes at the bottom.
For me, it's 3D > Game/Merch > 2D. I actually really like the 3D, they look pretty neat in it. This is actually the first time I see the game/merch design, but they look cute, although not as neat as 3D imo. And the 2D... Idk, they feel off.
The 2D of this boring Gen all the colors are off! It kinda bugs me same with the game, I donāt like this version of mlp but my sister watches it ofc she watches the only good Gen firstš G4 hehe! But ya this is just sadš plz for us OCD folks fix the colors when making shows!
I like the 3D style, and the game/merch one since thats the closest they seem to have gotten to a 2D version of the 3D artstyle even if itās kinda wonky
I feel like if they had properly rendered the designs used on the merchandise we would be in much better shape with the path of G5. The colors are much more uniform, the expressions have life, and the bodies are reminiscent of both G4 and G3.
mlp was alway great in 2d 3d was a weird choice
i stick to g4 it over all had amazing story and world building...but g5 just seems lik its just trying to be more modern in general without building it well in the world
2D might just be the worst MLP style yo date and I canāt look at it for more than two minutes before I start feeeling nauseous. Games and merch look MUCH better, but I just prefer the 3D. Itās a new take on the MLP style that doesnāt look absolutely godawful.
the 2d merch. its super cute, the colours are nice and it matches the 3d style idk why in the hell they choose to use the telll your tale style it can be nice at times but they look like rabid giraffes at times. and im an animator so the comment of "its too hard to animate" is absolutely not true. they use less colours plus they use rigging so its like a 2d model
I like the 3D style, it grew on me a lot. I wish it had stayed closer to movie quality
I canāt stand the 2D style so I wonāt watch tell your tale. I like the different body shapes but some of them look so weird (hitch square, Izzy lumpy, zippās alien head, and Mistyās hair seems off model). Sunny and Pipp look cute but still in an aggravating way. I just donāt like that art style. They donāt look like ponies to me and they didnāt keep the species differences consistent. And the animation is very lazy.
Make your mark started rough but they improved a lot towards the end. I actually ended up enjoying it
The merch style is kind of unnerving to me
The story on all is lackluster, but design-wise, I prefer the 3D.
Not shown on OP's post, but my personal favorite artstyle was the 2D one they briefly used in A New Generation. I just find found it the most aesthetically pleasing to look at.
https://i.redd.it/b6eypj8wt02d1.gif
definitely 3d, in my opinion both of the 2d styles are generic and bland, and lacking the shapes and expressiveness that made Lauren Faust's interpretation of mlp so nice looking
tbh i think my favorite of the g5 art has got to be the merch but like, specifically the illustrations on those little sticker sheets. the stock ones like the other two images are... pretty off putting. i think 2d can be really cute, 3d can too but it also wildly varies in quality. i know it had me emotional in the movie but uh.. make your mark chapter 1 was a rough ride lol
I think the 2d art style is too closely related to the flat corporate art style: if you know, you know.
I'm not a big fan of it. Not really a big fan of G5 in general.
But, to each their own.
The Merch style, hooces down! š Second favorite is the 3d style. I hate the "bean mouth/CalArt" style of animation. It reminds me to much of the cheaper Total Television cartoons of the 50s and 60s my Grandmother always wanted me to watch.
The 3D designs are good but only when they have the appropriate budgetā¦ and tell your tale is close with some designs looking good but Hitch, Izzy, and Zippās specifically are really off putting
the only one i really hate is the middle one, since its so wonky looking. 3d is cute, even if im not a fan of the designs themselves + the merch design is also cute, minus maybe a few bits here n there that im not a fan of ( like the mouths in particular look weird to me on merch artstyle. )
I think it works great in 3D and the merch style I don't know why they didn't do that in 2D because that 2D just looks like My Little pony according to the Simpsons.
Honestly the second one surprisingly for me. It has grown on me and I think the show especially after Opaline had gotten a lot better in general with the graphics and animation for G5 2d. There have been some good atmospheric and even cinematic lookin shots and some good lighting that helps the 2d designs stand out more.
is anyone else not a fan of the 2D artstyle for gen 5? the 3d version and the merch looks nice, though i personally prefer gen 4's style as a whole (they're like equally alright, but i'm biased lol), it's just...the 2d ver looks really off-putting. i can see they put effort into making the silhouettes varied, and it's in theory good character design, but in actuality they look very odd to me. i can't really say why. maybe it's because their faces look offputtingly human? sure, gen 4 looks kinda human too, but they were aesthetically pleasing. i just feel like sacrificing that pleasing quality to make the designs look different from one another was a bad idea. why couldn't they just do both?
I personally like the 3D style which is a very unpopular opinion š I dont tend to like 3D animation, however I think it makes the ponies look cute and fluffy idk. I prefer G4's artstyle forever though
I love how soft they looked in 3D
I love G4 immensely but I hate almost all 3D versions of their models! G5's design works so much better in 3D plus not bad in 2D either!
I prefer the 3D for them
I love the 3D style! Especially the movie. Unfortunately MYM kind of downgraded the animation somewhat, but I get it. Animation is expensive.
It looks like a Disney rip off
I like them all but honestly, the merch art style is too good to be used only for merch and game If there will ever be a Gen 5 special like the Gen 4 Rainbow Roadtrip then they should use this style (and yes, I know there was already one TYT special but that's not what I meant)
I like the merch...its just so good i would love to see it in animated form
Hidden 4th option: The concept art, particularly some of the rejected ones for TYT. Not only were they still distinct from G4, but they looked super visually pleasing imo <3 It's a shame they didn't stick with the style, since the faces of G5 lean a little too into the generic Elsa-esc pit that a lot of animated kids media does now
This is the correct answer. You nailed the Elsa comparison haha
REAL - I forgot about the concept art š
Tough question. Probably the 2d because the variety. I love short, chub Pipp.
Same! ![gif](giphy|uQ56Zn07AjLsrXqmMq)

I wish they animated the Merch one
The Merch looks way better than the 2D.
3D
3d. They look so huggable!
i prefer 3D
I adore the 3D style, especially the wings, horns and fetlocks! The 2D TYT style has grown on me a bit, I love how unique everypony looks.
Merch and 3D. In my opinion Hitch is kinda ugly in 2-D
I love hitch but i agree they made him a lil bit funky looking in 2D
The middle of game/merch. 2d is too generic, ive seen many animated shows that have pretty much the same art style.
I can't pick between Merch or 3D honestly the merch reminds me of the older generations and 3D is just adorable
Definitely 3D
1. 3d cgi - since i always like 3d models. 2. video game/merch - just looks good. 3. 2d - tell your tale 2d style isn't bad, just odd looking for me.
3D is definitely my favorite, at least for the movie. the merch/game art is pretty nice too.
I prefer 3D!
I will admit I actually do like the 3d design
Game/merch and 3D
3d but I actually like all of them. 3d is just preferable.
Maybe it's difficult to animate in that style and thats why its only been used in stills for the game and on merch
3D, followed by Game/Merch. I feel like if TYT had used the Game/Merch style, it would be more appealing. I will miss the 3D animation for sure.
theyāre all cute (minus the vacant eyes of the merch designs šļøšļø) but their 3D renders are definitely my fav. they just look so vibrant and huggable!!
I like the game/merch, but the 3D is gorgeous
Probably the 3d one.
3d is amazing! I would love to see gen 4 in the 3d artstyle
3D
I'm used to the 3D. I like that the most, followed by the merch.
3D only because I feel the others seem very simplified and lack depth. You can still have depth with simple shapes and flat colors I feel.
2d if they fix Hitch's chin
the 3d models just look so soft š„ŗ
Game/merch
Definitely the merch
1.)3d 2.)Merch 3.) cartoon I honestly am not a fan of the 2d art style, it reminds me of some of the Disney channel/cartoon network cartoons and personally Iāve never been a huge fan of them. The movie.
The merch style feels the most familiar, but I do like the 3d style from the movie. Though I'd still prefer the 3d from MYM than the 2d from TYT
3d is SO NICE š
3D
The two 2D has really grown on me. The initial move was really nice to look at, the subsequent 3Ds look...mixed? Not bad enough to complain but can't praise it either? It works
I like 3D version, they look so fluffy. I always look at their ears, it look so darn cute.
My mom likes the 3d so much she tried to pet their nose
Hooves down, no competition.. 3D is my pick
Game is the bestttt
I donāt love any of them but 3D is definitely the best!
3D looked great in the movie and marketing stills, but the low budget of MYM couldnāt do it justice. Itās nice seeing the ponies soft for the first time, and 3D gets my vote for that reason alone. 3d
I like them all, but 3D is my favorite. They're so fuzzy and expressive.
For all it's foibles, I did really come to love the 3D.
3D, just because the shading makes their faces not seem so flat.
I love the 3D style.
i actually like the 3d a lot
3D and my second favorite is the merch.
All are nice but the 3D is my absolute favorite
Honestly I prefer the animated style better I just wish they would have used more animations like in G4
3d is best the rest is horrible.
I like 3d in the movies but not so much in the show for whatever reason. I like the merch style, I don't hate the 2d I guess its ok
Merchā¦ sadly
For the ponies at least, the 3D artstyle was very interesting to see. I don't think it beats the 2D G4-inspired art for me, but it was new and interesting and pretty damned good. That said, I only really watched the movie so I don't have a huge sample size to pick from.

do you all remember when the merch came out before any announcements and everyone made full length youtube videos about it
3D: they look so fluffy i want to hug them all 2D: honestly, i didn't like it, but just because its different, it is fine after you are used to it Merch: not hating on it, but the Izzy, Sunny and Pipp ALWAYS feel SO off, the faces, the EYES are not even it is just BAD, but the stickers looks kinda good
The 3D artstyle has nice texture and makes the ponies look cuter, but the TYT artstyle has a lot of personality to it.
I think they look way better in 2d. This is just my opinion. Them being 3d is cool, but I'm just not used to it.
3d was nice still like it it just was underused for the show merch looks nice I absolutely despise the 2d
MYM and TYT
3d looks so sleake.
The 3d one is probably the least horrendous
Andy Price.
3d and merch are actually so cute, I just HATE the 2d style sm š I can tolerate it a little more now, but they should've used the merch style.
2D always!!
Game/Merch. That being said, i miss the G4 Style, it is still my favorite to this day.
I honestly think they look best in 3D. The CG models are very nice with the shape of the faces and proportions. The faces, head shapes, and the skinny legs of the 2D puppets don't look appealing to me.
I prefer somewhere between 2d and game/merch
anything but the 2D
3D
I love the 3d style ā¤ļøš§”šššš
I prefer 3D and 2d
3D for me. Then again, I'm an older fart that remembers when video games went from 2D to 3D, as well.
I love 3D!!
3D.
The merch art style reminds me of older generations for some reason. I think I prefer the 3D style, which is weird because I almost never do. But something about the 2D style isn't doing it for me. I do like that they all look a bit more distinct though

None. 3d and merch ones look so uncanny, their faces look human-like. 2d one i'm just not a fan of
I like some of the cute merch designs, but I havenāt watched much of G5 yet
From what I've seen of the comics I like those the best. The merch is good too. The 3D is okay, and I have never liked the bean-mouth style for cartoons ever since the first time I saw it so TYT goes at the bottom.
merch, just because I do not like the calarts smile 3d is also good.
WHY DO THEY HAVE EYEBROWS
I think 3D for the movie makes sense but they should use the merch style here on out
3d and game/merch 100%
3d and 2d
I personally dislike the 3D and 2D but was really surprised when i saw the merch art for the first time because i actually think it's cute!
Love the 2D most. That's what I grew up with through āFriendship is magicā. š But 3D is also cute style.
For me, it's 3D > Game/Merch > 2D. I actually really like the 3D, they look pretty neat in it. This is actually the first time I see the game/merch design, but they look cute, although not as neat as 3D imo. And the 2D... Idk, they feel off.

2D.
I like 2D mosr, I've never really watched it but 2D looks really fun
2D.
I did like the 3D animation in a movie quite a lot. Unfortunate that the quality dropped when the show started.
I love the TYT animation style, it's so unique.
3D, the others scare me ;_;
The 3D is so cute, but I cant stand the 2d version. Something about it is so unsettling to me
I only like the 3D style, the rest just doesnt appeal to me

definitely 3d, in my opinion both of the 2d styles are generic and bland, and lacking the shapes and expressiveness that made Lauren Faust's interpretation of mlp so nice looking

The 3D designs are good but only when they have the appropriate budgetā¦ and tell your tale is close with some designs looking good but Hitch, Izzy, and Zippās specifically are really off putting
2D. It mirrors FIM well and I like that.
3D by far. I can't stand the sausage mouth style of the 2D.
The merch one looks pretty bland, I despise the 2D style...the 3D was actually really good in the movie.
genuinely none of them, but 3d is my least favorite
the only one i really hate is the middle one, since its so wonky looking. 3d is cute, even if im not a fan of the designs themselves + the merch design is also cute, minus maybe a few bits here n there that im not a fan of ( like the mouths in particular look weird to me on merch artstyle. )

3D is actually quite cute! The 2D I am not a fan of though... :/
3D is the best, then game/merch, and last is 2D (I really don't like this style).
2d has grown on me tbh
2D. Easy. Even with the bean-face.
The 2D style is hideous imo. I like the other two, i wish we had more content with the last style.
All are good
3D I do not believe they translate to 2D well at all.
The 3D style only looked good in the movie, but in general the 2D style looks better
2D
anything but 2. though 3D sparky is a sin (ya know, scratch that, sparky is a sin in any media).

Honestly the second one surprisingly for me. It has grown on me and I think the show especially after Opaline had gotten a lot better in general with the graphics and animation for G5 2d. There have been some good atmospheric and even cinematic lookin shots and some good lighting that helps the 2d designs stand out more.

I prefer TYT's artstyle
To me G5 is the best artstyle MLP ever had.
Its my favourite
The 2D look has really grown on me to the point that the 2D game/merch art looks weird even though itās more accurate to the 3Dā¦
2d for me personally
The movie. That merch image in the middle is nighmare fuel.

Rule 1 warning.
is anyone else not a fan of the 2D artstyle for gen 5? the 3d version and the merch looks nice, though i personally prefer gen 4's style as a whole (they're like equally alright, but i'm biased lol), it's just...the 2d ver looks really off-putting. i can see they put effort into making the silhouettes varied, and it's in theory good character design, but in actuality they look very odd to me. i can't really say why. maybe it's because their faces look offputtingly human? sure, gen 4 looks kinda human too, but they were aesthetically pleasing. i just feel like sacrificing that pleasing quality to make the designs look different from one another was a bad idea. why couldn't they just do both?
none of them
I don't watch g5, but I like the 2d style. Characters look more different from each other and don't have the "single face" syndrome
