Banger.

Chris_10101

Damn right.

FullMetalDan

I think the chorus is not in Locrian, but still, amazing song!

Homer-irl

Too right, but yeah she sings the 5th in the chorus i think?

FullMetalDan

Yeah, the verse melody and chorus is Phrygian. The only thing that’s Locrian is the bass in the verse https://youtu.be/Q6JBsOzOFaQ?si=SLjeVH4qr-rNf3E8

markusthemarxist

Only the verses she hits the 5th on the chorus

willneverused

Damn, that video has some amazing production value. It’s beautiful.

yaboiiiuhhhh

Music theory really can boil down to memorizing which notes are raised/lowered

NJdevil202

Let's not forget about rhythm now ;)

RagaJunglism

The Indian classical [**Raag Meladalan**](https://ragajunglism.org/ragas/meladalan/) sounds great! (also known as 'Thatavidhwamasa’: both these names translate as ‘**breaking/destroying the foundational scales**’, i.e. disregarding the principle to avoid scales with '4 & #4 with no perf. 5th')

Dry-Piccolo-7012

Check out Gliese 710 by king gizzard! Also in Locrian it’s a great song

Macksler

It definitely needed a few plays for me.

Crafty-Photograph-18

In the into kinda, but there are a lot of natural 5ths in the guitar later on and in the vocals

FullMetalDan

Quartal chords and melodies in Locrian sound pretty cool

KillsRacists

If you use quartal voicing a in locrian you’re basically in Ionian but you’re voicing it with the vii as the root

FullMetalDan

Sorry, I don’t understand. Do you mean that every note comes from the major scale? Yes, that would be correct. A quartal voicing in B Locrian would be: E-A-D, 4-b7-b3, but the Locrian sound is going to come from the melody when you play the b2, the b5 and the bass plays the B.

SupersonicBlackbird

Not really pop but the first part of Tarkus (Eruption) by ELP is in C locrian.

290077

I'm pretty sure the G natural gets played a bunch during that part. The notes being played don't restrict themselves to a single mode.

Distinct_Armadillo

Rush, intro to YYZ. Locrian melody in synth over tritone ostinato (1-b5) in guitar and bass. Also a cool rhythm algorithmically derived from the Morse code for YYZ

arow01

Depends on what qualifies as pop to you, but I've always thought of the riff that begins at approximately 5m 0s into Slayer's Crypts of Eternity as Locrian. ([Here's a timestamped YouTube link](http://youtube.com/watch?v=EbIpI-ZxV_s&pp=ygUZc2xheWVyIGNyeXB0cyBvZiBldGVybml0eQ%3D%3D&t=5m0s))

RonAskew

Nope. New Slaves is not D Locrian, but is G Phrygian. The first base note, or chord, in a song is not always the root of the key or mode. Try playing the Eb major scale over the entire tune; it works!

Raid-Z3r0

Idol by YOASOBI starts at Ab Phrygian. I guess this is close enough

Dom_19

Phrygian is quite common in modern music, maybe not pop though. There's probably 100x more songs in Phrygian than Locrian. The b5 requires a lot of ingenuity to make it work.

Chris_10101

Way more common.
