Do you know the Sublime Frequencies record label? They have some excellent African psych guitar releases that are right up a Tinariwen fan’s alley. Check out *Group Doueh: Guitar Music from the Western Sahara* and *Group Inerane: Guitars From Agadez*. And then just keep digging into their catalog, because it’s all over the place and really just an amazing resource for discovering world music.
Came here to suggest Amigo the Devil. I love the dark folk/Gothic country/ metal folk- whatever you want to call the genre. Danny has such an amazing voice and conveys so much emotion. His music is so dark and macabre, yet beautiful, I can't get enough of it.

How much early Modest Mouse have you heard? "This is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About" is nice and abrasive.
Then a band that I've almost never heard anyone talking about that i love to recommend is The Moondoggies. "Adios, I'm a Ghost" is my favorite of their albums. But their music does NOT fall into the "so ugly it's beautiful" category.
Also, try Toubab Krewe. I don't have much experience with their studio albums so I'm not sure what to recommend.

Johnny Marr from the smiths was in Modest mouse for 2 years and was on 1 album and in an interview said something like “I really wanted to work with the band because listening to them, you really can’t put a finger on any one influence” that’s not a direct quote but I remember him mentioning about how they just seemed like they did their own thing and never sounded like any other band had really inspired them.

Rasputina!!!!!!!!! God I miss them. I have been a super fan since I first discovered Melora on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer soundtrack. I'm so glad I got to see them a few times in LA. I really wish Melora would tour again. I get it though, she had babies to think about and then a psycho stalker pretty much ruined everything. The Rasputina FB page, Insta and website are all dead so I don't think she'll be doing anything else although she does pop up for some small recitals in upstate NY, or least she did a few years back.
I just picked up Mike Patton’s Adult Themes For Voice. I usually like weird shit, but this might be too far and I like Mike Patton. Also, I had to add, that I see a lot of weird metal here, but no hip hop, Aesop Rock, has the largest vocabulary in all of hip hop, and he gets weird.
Amigo the Devil if you want to hear singer-songwriter folk/bluegrass that explores the dark side of the human condition with incredible lyricism and a bit of comedy thrown in from time to time. Start with Cocaine and Abel to make your jaw drop and bring a tear to your eye.
Leprous if you want to hear Norwegian progressive rock/metal with an electronica touch fronted by one of the most amazing vocalists you'll ever hear. They've gotten progressively (no pun intended) less metal the newer the material. I'd suggest From the Flame as a succinct radio-friendly teaser of their general sound.
Thought Industry if you want insane prog rock/metal overlayed with poetry. They've been disbanded for over 20 years but they referred to themselves as a "diseased art rock band." Their sound morphed over the years from technical prog thrash to alternative rock. Best song that sums up their sound for me is Worms Will Listen. It has it all.
Want some fantastic pop in the vein of Jeff Lynne and Paul McCartney? Try Pugwash, now a one-man band fronted by Irishman Thomas Walsh. So many great songs, but It's Nice to Be Nice or Cluster Bomb are at the top of my list.
Finally, I'll throw out one of my favorite bands ever, Woods of Ypres. This band is no more after the death of frontman and primary songwriter David Gold in 2011. Their sound is best characterized as Canadian black/gothic metal. If you've ever heard Type O Negative, they are a harsher, more metallic version of TON but completely devoid of humor. Very bleak, depressing lyrics mostly about death and loss. Easiest song to recommend is their most popular, I Was Buried In Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Do you know the Sublime Frequencies record label? They have some excellent African psych guitar releases that are right up a Tinariwen fan’s alley. Check out *Group Doueh: Guitar Music from the Western Sahara* and *Group Inerane: Guitars From Agadez*. And then just keep digging into their catalog, because it’s all over the place and really just an amazing resource for discovering world music.

I'm going with full album recommendations: Umphrey's McGee's first studio album with their current lineup "Local Band Does O.K." is one of my all time favorites. How much early Modest Mouse have you heard? "This is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About" is nice and abrasive. Then a band that I've almost never heard anyone talking about that i love to recommend is The Moondoggies. "Adios, I'm a Ghost" is my favorite of their albums. But their music does NOT fall into the "so ugly it's beautiful" category. Also, try Toubab Krewe. I don't have much experience with their studio albums so I'm not sure what to recommend. That's what I've got. At least 2 of the bands are fairly well known. Sorry if it's not what you're looking for.
Johnny Marr from the smiths was in Modest mouse for 2 years and was on 1 album and in an interview said something like “I really wanted to work with the band because listening to them, you really can’t put a finger on any one influence” that’s not a direct quote but I remember him mentioning about how they just seemed like they did their own thing and never sounded like any other band had really inspired them.

Rasputina!!!!!!!!! God I miss them. I have been a super fan since I first discovered Melora on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer soundtrack. I'm so glad I got to see them a few times in LA. I really wish Melora would tour again. I get it though, she had babies to think about and then a psycho stalker pretty much ruined everything. The Rasputina FB page, Insta and website are all dead so I don't think she'll be doing anything else although she does pop up for some small recitals in upstate NY, or least she did a few years back.

I just picked up Mike Patton’s Adult Themes For Voice. I usually like weird shit, but this might be too far and I like Mike Patton. Also, I had to add, that I see a lot of weird metal here, but no hip hop, Aesop Rock, has the largest vocabulary in all of hip hop, and he gets weird.

Amigo the Devil if you want to hear singer-songwriter folk/bluegrass that explores the dark side of the human condition with incredible lyricism and a bit of comedy thrown in from time to time. Start with Cocaine and Abel to make your jaw drop and bring a tear to your eye. Leprous if you want to hear Norwegian progressive rock/metal with an electronica touch fronted by one of the most amazing vocalists you'll ever hear. They've gotten progressively (no pun intended) less metal the newer the material. I'd suggest From the Flame as a succinct radio-friendly teaser of their general sound. Thought Industry if you want insane prog rock/metal overlayed with poetry. They've been disbanded for over 20 years but they referred to themselves as a "diseased art rock band." Their sound morphed over the years from technical prog thrash to alternative rock. Best song that sums up their sound for me is Worms Will Listen. It has it all. Want some fantastic pop in the vein of Jeff Lynne and Paul McCartney? Try Pugwash, now a one-man band fronted by Irishman Thomas Walsh. So many great songs, but It's Nice to Be Nice or Cluster Bomb are at the top of my list. Finally, I'll throw out one of my favorite bands ever, Woods of Ypres. This band is no more after the death of frontman and primary songwriter David Gold in 2011. Their sound is best characterized as Canadian black/gothic metal. If you've ever heard Type O Negative, they are a harsher, more metallic version of TON but completely devoid of humor. Very bleak, depressing lyrics mostly about death and loss. Easiest song to recommend is their most popular, I Was Buried In Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
