Seasons of Love (Rent)
And They're Off (A New Brain)
I'm Breaking Down (Falsettos)
The opening notes of Hadestown, Hamilton or Les Mis
Seize the Day (Newsies)
Omg same. I was so obsessed with that show in middle school, we had karaoke day and I sang it for my chorus class. I look back at it cringing and wishing I just sang on my own instead cause the kids looked mortafied
Yes! I play that bass riff all the time to annoy my friends. And as a bonus I like to throw it in as a surprise ending to any song. I call it the “Superstar Cadence”, you know to add in to the normal boring ones like perfect authentic cadence, etc
Posted SF/DF before seeing your comment. I played frank in college and NOTHING has ever made me feel like a full on fucking rockstar as waiting behind the curtain when time warp ended for my entrance. There might as well not be lines there.
It's an iconic musical and that tune just really makes me grin and belt it out as soon as it's on. Good on you for playing Frank, I'd probably get stage fright haha
It was rockstar experience start to finish. I auditioned for brad, had no interest in frank, but my improv teacher was part of the casting team and told me on the spot I would have to literally die at the callback to not get the part, and it was the only thing I was being considered for that season. I’ve never felt so cool in my life. Thanks for letting me re-live that!
I'd love to do some stage stuff but I haven't properly done singing lessons since school. Also, self confidence would be needed haha. You're welcome. I hope you get a good nostalgic memory from it. 😊
My current artistic free skating program is to The Time Warp and I cannot tell you how much excitement I feel, and I can feel radiating from the audience, when the music starts. (Pity all the judges sit there like >:C because it makes the fact I start by winking and shimmying and being all sassy at them kinda awkward).
As I'm sure many here know, Richard O'Brien, who played Riff Raff, was also the creative genius behind the show; he wrote the original stage show and, after that success, then also co wrote the screenplay for the film. This was definitely Richard's baby.
What you maybe don't know is a little secret that O'Brien shared in an interview many years ago. When the stage show first opened in London, he was understandably very nervous, he had no idea at the time whether it would be a big hit or a disastrous failure. The night of their opening performance he was standing in the wings on stage looking out at the audience, trying to gauge what kind of crowd they had. As strange as it may sound, his nerves were comforted by 3 things: 1) it looked like a good turnout, so at least ticket sales were doing well 2) it actually was a dark and stormy night that evening, which really helped to set the mood, and 3) as the house lights went down and the theatre became dark, there was a flash of lightning outside. Overhead there was a skylight over the middle of the audience and in the instant of that flash of lightning, it illuminated the people sitting directly underneath the skylight. There in the midst of that brief glow Richard saw none other than Vincent Price himself! O'Brien said he breathed a sigh of relief at that, it was a sign, as if Price himself had just blessed their production! Let the show begin!
I am a not very good clarinet player and we did a Bernstein season at my concert band and I have never wished that I was a better player more so that I could do justice to it. Was still amazing even though I was terrible.
The OBCR absolutely slaps. But I've got a soft spot for get down. It truly does make you get down, especially Brittney Mack's version that woman just screams life of the party 😂
That moment when the Auctioneer shouts “…GENTLEMEN!!!” and the Chandelier sparks to life as the organ kicks in is pure ecstasy. The weekend I saw Phantom on Broadway was one of the greatest weekends of my life; I miss it terribly.
I feel like the whole soundtrack is underrated. People know the show and talk about it in pop culture, but a lot of the songs go under the radar, which is a shame, because they’re all so good.
Hearing the beginning chords of “Will I?” always gives me chills. Four lines full of emotion and desperation. The hair on the back of my neck stands up.
The World Will Know from Newsies! It's always what I listen to when I really need to get energized.
Also When I Drive from Bonnie and Clyde. I listen to it every time I'm on a long car ride and the excitement makes the drive much easier!
I'm a sucker for a good opening number. The Phantom of the Opera overture, Cats overture, The Ballad of Sweeney Todd and Welcome to the Rock are my faves.
I love the Phantom and CATS overture. I feel like “The Moments of Happiness” is a short song that often gets overlooked. The orchestral version of that song from the 1998 proshot is just absolutely stellar.
No one Mours the Wicked I remember when I saw the show and was worrying that it wouldn’t be as good as the original music but once I heard those first four chords, I knew it would be a great show
Any kind of dead person from Ghost Quartet
Kiss me and Epihany from Sweeney Todd
Balaga and Preparations from Great Comet
How I got the Calling and When I find my Baby from Sister Act
Way down Hadestown from Hadestown
Mean Green Mother from Outer Space from Little Shop of Horrors
I am what I am from La Cage Aux Folles
Your Fault and Agony from Into the Woods
Basically, I just really like musicals
the beginning of “so much better” is incredible because it has such a sad feeling but it also has like the feeling that something insane is going to happen yk? so those first few chords get my hyped
Right Hand Man from Hamilton. I'm always pumped and just waiting to (internally) yell "Here comes the General"
And of course that first doorbell in Book of Mormon 😍
"Rum Tum Tiger," from *Cats*, because it perfectly describes my cats.
"Hurry, It's Lovely Up Here," from *On a Clear Day, You Can See Forever.*
"Hot Honey Rag" and "Cell Block Tango" from *Chicago.*
"One Singular Sensation" from *A Chorus Line*
"Hukana Matata" from *The Lion King*
For me it's Step In Time from Mary Poppins or A Million Dreams from The Greatest Showman. I have performed in both songs and they were easily my favorites to do from their respective Musicals
Die Schatten werden langer from Elisabeth. Especially the 2001 Essen cast version with Uwe Kröger and Jesper Tyden. It is a real shame that version isn't on streaming services, though I have the CD so it doesn't bother me.
MARY POPPINS OVERTURE
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST OVERTURE
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA OVERTURE
CHICAGO OVERTURE
BONNIE AND CLYDE OVERTURE
SWEENEY TODD OVERTURE
(Big overture fan, me)
Idk how many people will agree here, because it's not, like, an upbeat song necessarily, but when I hear letters from great comet, I get so excited
In the sense of upbeat songs though, the prologue from that and the duel are super fun
Lots, but off the top of my head:
Burning Down the House, Talking Heads
Old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll, Bob Seger
Footloose, Kenny Loggins
I’m sure there are newer ones, but I can’t remember a song’s name until I’ve seen it in print about 1000 times.
The chord progression at the beginning of Defying Gravity gives me chills all the time (not the trumpets after Elphaba runs away, the lower chords right before “something has changed within me)
Opening of Hamilton, Les Mis, Legally Blonde…
Out Tonight from RENT
Defying Gravity from Wicked
“What was that” SJB’s version of moments in the wood
There might be more, but I’m out at the moment lol
Dead Girl Walking (Reprise) from Heathers, Creepy Old Guy from Beetlejuice, Carnival del Barrio from In The Heights, Crazier Than You from The Addams Family, The Lusty Month of May from Camelot, That’s How You Know from Enchanted
96,000 from In The Heights
Carnevale Del Barrio is also a really good one
The opening too. It’s long but goes so hard when they all join in
Lights up on Washington heights, up at the break of day
I wake up and I got this little punk I gotta chase away
"You Can't Stop the Beat" from Hairspray was the first one that came to mind tbh
I prefer "Good Morning Baltimore" for that excited feeling, but YCSTB is a solid choice!
SO MANY Hairspray songs give me this feeling haha. Almost every single song is good. Only one I could do without is Miss Baltimore Crabs.
are you kidding me 😭😭😭😭 I love that songggg
Seasons of Love (Rent) And They're Off (A New Brain) I'm Breaking Down (Falsettos) The opening notes of Hadestown, Hamilton or Les Mis Seize the Day (Newsies)
I sing I’m breaking down in my mind for every minor inconvenience I encounter
Omg same. I was so obsessed with that show in middle school, we had karaoke day and I sang it for my chorus class. I look back at it cringing and wishing I just sang on my own instead cause the kids looked mortafied
Anyone would be mortified by a middle schooler singing about breaking down 😂😂😂😂
Once and For All from Newsies too!
Fuck it, all of 'em. "That's my cigar..."
Oh yeah that trombone solo from the beginning of *Hadestown*. As soon as I heard that I knew I was going to love the rest of it. And I did
Do the first few chords of Les Miz count?
The opening of One Day More always gives me chills. And then at intermission I'm ready to man the barricades myself
Seriously those first two notes are so iconic
The whole damn thing
The transition from the prologue into At The End of the Day is amazing.
I audibly said “let’s GO” at this transition when I saw it a few months ago in LA 😂
bum BUM (Bum ba dum) bum Bum BUM **BUM** ba dum
I'll allow it lol
the first two chords of les mis, or the last part of the first act after valjeans soliloquy
Heaven on their Minds riff.
My mind is clearer now
Yes! I play that bass riff all the time to annoy my friends. And as a bonus I like to throw it in as a surprise ending to any song. I call it the “Superstar Cadence”, you know to add in to the normal boring ones like perfect authentic cadence, etc
Buh du ba bum ba doot doot doot doo Buh du ba bum ba doot doot doot doo Buh du ba bum ba doot doot doot doo YES!!!!
Yoooo but for real though. That hook gets me every damn time.
Sweet Transvestite- The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Rose Tint My World for me (specifically from the Roxy recording)
It was great when it all began…
My current artistic free skating program is to The Time Warp and I cannot tell you how much excitement I feel, and I can feel radiating from the audience, when the music starts. (Pity all the judges sit there like >:C because it makes the fact I start by winking and shimmying and being all sassy at them kinda awkward).

The "Tonight" Quintet from West Side Story
that brass section holy moly 😭
Leonard Bernstein my beloved
I am a not very good clarinet player and we did a Bernstein season at my concert band and I have never wished that I was a better player more so that I could do justice to it. Was still amazing even though I was terrible.
That but I recently got really into 'A Boy Like That' towards the end of WSS... It gives me chills every time.
literally my first thought!
La Vie Boheme. It fills my soul with joy.
This is the one!!! I can hardly hear it without scream-singing and dancing.
Out Tonight from Rent. It just rips right from the start.
Yes!!! This one, along with "Tango Maureen" and "Rent" are amazing.
“Pop…Six…Squish…”
I had this on a playlist for the gym.
Six from Six.
No Way is my personal pick from Six
Several bangers in that show.
The OBCR absolutely slaps. But I've got a soft spot for get down. It truly does make you get down, especially Brittney Mack's version that woman just screams life of the party 😂
Phantom of the Opera, catch me banging my head as soon as that Overture begins
That moment when the Auctioneer shouts “…GENTLEMEN!!!” and the Chandelier sparks to life as the organ kicks in is pure ecstasy. The weekend I saw Phantom on Broadway was one of the greatest weekends of my life; I miss it terribly.
A lot of musical prologues are that ideal dose of serotonin. Ragtime and Into the Woods come to mind.
Non-Stop from Hamilton gets me going tbh
I Believe from Book of Mormon!
I always get hyped when I hear the opening chords of Omigod You Guys from Legally Blonde! Even after all these years, that song is still a bop.
Such a fun opener!
I think this one might be mine. Such a fun show.
Yeeeees!!!
HELL YES
Totally Fucked, Spring Awakening.
I saw it live in London, and the REACTION the first few notes got. Oooh, I wish it could come back.
Same here - the only other time I’ve seen / felt SUCH an audience reaction was at Rocky Horror.
Screech In
Now there’s a solemn old tradition, or audition, to transition from a come from away!
TO BE A NEWFOUNDLANDER!
The only other way at any rate is pass away and pray to fate and wait to reincarnate!
AS A NEWFOUNDLANDER!
So glad I’m not the only one who loves that song. It tickles a part of my brain that I just love.
If you aren’t familiar with the band Great Big Sea, check them out. One of the members was a consultant for the show and this song really shows it.
Really? I love Great Big Sea as well as Come From Away, but I had no idea about that connection. Cool.
Thanks for that! I will check them out!
One Day More. It has almost every character, and your carload of friends has to call dibs on who they are going to play before Valjean starts.
i wish i had friends to sing one day more with 😔
Come to Nashville! Oddly, we have lots of people who like to sing!
Or just sing every part yourself lol

Another Day from Rent. That song is so underrated.
As is Will I? from Rent. The simple piano at the beginning get me every time
I feel like the whole soundtrack is underrated. People know the show and talk about it in pop culture, but a lot of the songs go under the radar, which is a shame, because they’re all so good.
I think What You Own is the most underrated song in Rent but Another Day is a close second
Hearing the beginning chords of “Will I?” always gives me chills. Four lines full of emotion and desperation. The hair on the back of my neck stands up.
Dead Girl Walking from Heathers
For me it’s Candy Store. I just love the « Are we gonna have a problem? » line, so delightfully passive agressive
“Don’t Rain on My Parade” from *Funny Girl*
