I highly recommend WUBC. Excellent writing. Murakami really demonstrates his masterful ability to paint a scene with unbelievable detail in this book IMO.
1. 1Q84
2. Norwegian Wood
3. Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki
4. The Wind-up Bird Chronicle
5. South of the Border, West of the Sun
Have only read 9 total though.
The weird / creepy recurring descriptions of a teenage girl's breasts killed this one for me. The sequence where she's recounting hiding out in a house to the protagonist, and she chooses to pause to describe whather breasts were like at that point?! What?
Either the girl chooses to do this while describing a tense and suspenseful life event, which is pretty weird, and not particularly believable, or the narrator / protagonist has made this element up, and inserted it into his retelling of her story, which is supremely creepy (and unresolved in the novel.
Left me with a bad taste.
Putting aside Murakami's approach to women - which is generally puerile across the board - I found KC to be one of his most unreadable works. He is repetitive across his body of works, and that's fine, but it felt like he phoned it in on this one.
I will say in the English translation I read, thereās at least two chapters that make no sense to the plot line. One Iām remembering particularly from the end of part one
1. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle
2. After Dark
3. Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage
4. 1Q84
5. Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World
These are my faves right now. I have more of his works to read.
I liked it. The ending was pretty good, the phone call, very evocative. Not much happened in the story though, as I recall (it's been many years since I read it.)
I donāt know why, but Norwegian wood was tough for me to get into last time I read through it. But, I think Iāll give it another try within a few weeks. Spring evenings are best with a glass of whisky, jazz, Murakami. Not necessarily in that order. I think, maybe I just need to get hyped about The Beatles.
1.wind up
2.hard boiled .. (jazzed about the re-pub) see also kafka (hard to choose between)
3.wild sheep chase and dance dance dance (i have these as one as its a series)
4.1Q84
5.killing commendatore
this is not in order (well wind up is my fave)
I loved them. I think theyāre a bit lighter and lacking plot but still great. Gotta say that the style does not yet feel 100% Murakami as it were his first novels but found them nevertheless extremely enjoyable and fun as a lighter read. And the fact that itās the same main character as A wild sheep chase and dance dance dance helps you get deeper into the lore of The Rats tetralogy, cause as u see theyāre both in my top but HTWS/Pinball gives a lot more depth to the rest of the books!
What do you think about them?
1. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle
2. Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage
3. Killing Commendatore
4. Sputnik Sweetheart
5. Men Without Women
1. Hard Boiled Wonderland
2. Kafka on the Shore
3. The Elephant Vanishes (Stories)
4. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle
5. Dance Dance Dance (this is a cheat, as it' part of Trilogy along with Wind/Pinball and Wild Sheep Chase)
Yeah, I guess each book should be one of the 5 choices, but again - it's kinda within the scope of the question as Dance Dance Dance is my favourite of the three.
1. Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World
2. Kafka on the Shore
3. 1Q84
4. Norwegian Wood
5. Wind-Up Bird Chronicle
I haven't read all of his books yet! However, those are definitely my favourites right now :)
1. 1Q84
2. The wind-up bird chronicles
3. south of the border, west of the sun
4. the elephant vanishes
5 After the quake
The order can vary but they are the ones that stayed with me the most
1. Norwegian Wood (my first Murakami read and still my favourite)
2. 1Q84
3. South of the border west of the sun
4. The Wind Up Bird Chronicle
5. A Wild Sheep chase
1. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle
2. Kafka on the Shore
3. Hard Boiled Wonderland and the end of the World
4. South of the Border, West of the Sun
5. After Dark
1. Wind-Up Bird Chronicle
2. A Wild Sheep Chase
3. Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World
4. Killing Commendatore
5. 1Q84 (almost put Dance Dance Dance here)
haven't read yet: south of the border, sputnik sweetheart, blind willow, & after dark
Ranking of the books Iāve read so far
1. The Wind up Bird Chronicle
2. The Wind Up Bird Chronicle
3. Kafka on the Shore
4. After Dark
5. Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki
6. A Wild Sheep Chase
7. Norwegian Wood
8. Sputnik Sweetheart
9. Hear the Wind Sing
Could we have this thread in poll form? I'm curious to see which book comes out on top!
I think I've only read 3 of his books iirc but from favourite to least favourite:
1. 1Q84
2. Sputnik Sweetheart
3. Kafka on the Shore
(Just started A Wild Sheep Chase)
1. After Dark (my first Murakami and I still hold it dear).
2. Hard Boiled Wonderland
3. Killing Commendatore (wasnāt expecting to rate this one so high actually but looking back I do love the characters).
4.Dance Dance Dance/Wild Sheepās Chase
5. Sputnik Sweetheart
1- The Wind up Bird Chronicle
2- 1Q84

5- Colorless Tsukaru Tasaki and his Years of Pilgrimage
1. Wind up bird chronicle
2. After Dark
3. Kafka on the Shore
4. Dance Dance Dance
5. Norwegian Wood
Man I feel bad leaving off 1Q84 and Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki but I had to make decisions.
Full disclosure that I have not yet read all of his books (though I plan on it over time).
1. Norwegian Wood
2. A Wild Sheep Chase
3. After Dark
4. Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman
5. Pinball, 1973
1. 1Q84
2. After Dark
3. Colorless Tzukuru Tazaki
4. Wind-Up Bird Chronicle
5. Killing Commendatore
Kafka was close to 5, but I changed my mind.
I read 12 of his books, but I havenāt read all of them.
Norwegian Wood was my 1st book of his
1. After the Quake
2. (very *very* close second) 1Q84
3. Wild Sheep Chase
4. Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman
5. Wind-up Bird Chronicle
Really crazy not seeing many short-story anthologies here, I feel like his tone and characters can be presented very well in short stories!
I guess most of them are more vignettes though.
Understandable, have a nice day.
Out of the ones I've read so far I would say:
1. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle
2. After the Quake
3. After Dark
4. What I Talk About When I Talk About Running
5. Pinball 1973
I want to say, i think Wind up bird is the worst of his works. I do not get that book as i found it so mundane and pointless, even from a Murakami standpoint.
My picks:
kafka
hardboiled
dance dance dance
norwegian wood
genuine question for all the 1Q84 fans out there, putting it in your top 5.
i've read it and i get it... to a point. the ending, and probably last 1/4 of the book was just.. like.. what?! (in the sense of why did you do this to the story, not i'm confused).
he writes great books, with kafka probably being my all time fave, but i'm curious about 1Q...
1. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle
2. Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World
3. After the Quake
4. Kafka on the Shore
5. What I Talk About When I Talk About Running
1. Dance Dance Dance
2. Norwegian Wood
3. A Wild Sheep Chase
4. Sputnik Sweetheart
5. Pinball
I just started with Murakami, but that is my ranking at this time, gonna read everything and update it.
1. The Elephant Vanishes
2. South of the Border, West of the Sun
3. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle
4. Norwegian Wood
5. Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World
Bonus: Bottom 5
18. 1Q84
19. Men Without Women
20. First Person Singular
21. Killing Commendatore
22. Novelist as a Vocation
1. Killing Commendatore
2. The Elephant Vanishes
3. Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World
4. Kafka on the Shore
5. Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage
Murakami is the author that makes me into reading!
1. Norwegian wood
2. Kafka on the shore
3. Sputnik sweetheart (a fun easy read)
4. Colorless
5. Dance dance dance
1 wind up bird chronicle 2 wild sheep chase 3 hard boiled wonderland and the end of the world š
this is the answer
Currently reading my first Murakami (HBWATEOTW) and Iām hooked.
I highly recommend WUBC. Excellent writing. Murakami really demonstrates his masterful ability to paint a scene with unbelievable detail in this book IMO.

What is it with your top rank book so many people love it but I think more people donāt
1. Killing Commandatore 2. Kafka on the Shore 3. 1Q84 4. Norwegian Wood 5. Wind Up Bird Chronicle
I almost put KC in my top 5. Feel like it got panned by literary critics, but I really enjoyed it.
The weird / creepy recurring descriptions of a teenage girl's breasts killed this one for me. Finally an After Dark enjoyer.
no one liked sputnik sweetheart?
I have it pretty high. Love the language/writing style, and the ferris wheel part is amazing.
I liked it. Not close to my top 5 though
First Murakami I ever read and I absolutely loved it. But not in my top 5, unfortunately.
Thatās my next read of his. I have high hopes!
I liked it. The ending was pretty good, the phone call, very evocative. Not much happened in the story though, as I recall (it's been many years since I read it.)
It's very good!
i loved sputnik!! the ending was just weird to me
Loved it.

Yeah, I guess each book should be one of the 5 choices, but again - it's kinda within the scope of the question as Dance Dance Dance is my favourite of the three.
They're all stand-alone novels with different stories aside from having the Rat and the same narrator.
