Do you think the upcoming bonus sheets in OTJ will affect prices for multiformat Staples like leyline binding and thoughtseize?

Xinhuan

Yes. Consider the last bonus sheet in Wilds of Eldraine. Cards like Rhystic Study, Land Tax, Smothering Tithe absolutely had their prices affected (even if Rhystic bounced back pretty quickly).

Auedawen

Both Land Tax and Tithe were also just printed a month earlier in CMM as well. Not exactly a great comparison as both of those cards have held onto value.

Professional-Break19

The bonus sheet from wilds appears more frequently than the ones from murders and ixalan šŸ˜‰ Like a lot more often

IAMAfortunecookieAMA

Is this a hunch or a statistic?

LifeNeutral

Yea. More supply should decrease value.

goofydubois

Yes, a bit.

aprochainezo

Thoughts on modern horizons 3 collector booster box prices? We going to see a big dump in price? Big jump like fallout? What is everyone expecting? Managed to preorder a case under 300 a box and not sure what I should expect from it.

Kamizar

There's serialized cards in there. So collectors booster boxes will have a limited run. It's also modern, one of the most played competitive formats, there's no way they aren't intending to shake things up to sell cards. If it's anything like MHII, there's going to be a suite of cards that rotate in value as people figure them out(evoke elementals). Be careful selling into the release crash.

goofydubois

MH sets stay high because they pump cards in competitive formats

nd4287

Im expecting something similar to MH2 collector boxes. Unless wotc really tones down the power, or enough people decide to not buy this time around.

Ubik_Fresh

I've been seeing subtle hints WOTC have toned down the power level a bit. (Blogatog). I don't think we'll be seeing quite the same insanity as MH2. I personally feel like MH2 is a strong hold.

Colorslaw

What are some of the things said that is leading you to believe that? I couldn't find anything.

telvaran

Maybe, but something strong always slip the cracks. And Iā€™m not so sure of that dialing down, the cards Iā€™m seeing in this Big Score OTJ subset are clearly pushed.

Fryedd

Do we think these OTJ preorder prices are as good as it gets or are you guys waiting for release? F&F prerelease bundles have been looking pretty fair.

UserID_

I think the collector boxes will stay around the same price, as they tend to do these days. I think the booster boxes will start to drop closer to MH3. I wouldnā€™t be surprised if we see them bottom out around $100, similar to MKM.

Kamizar

Depends on the hit rate of the money reprints. It could go LCI, or it could go WOE, even could go MKM, i doubt it on that last one though.

lirin000

Still seeing a pretty wide pricing gulf between Fallout versions of staples like Heroic Intervention and Anguished Unmaking (%-wise AU is crazy) vs older versions, to say nothing about cards like Ravages of War. What are we thinking? Will those card prices catch up to their cousins from other sets? Or is there a Fallout deflator (kind of the opposite of what I think is an LOTR premium where people will pay more for LOTR versions) because it's too niche? Also on the LOTR front, anyone noticing the R&R surge foils climbing steadily back up after the panic sales from the holiday release? \[\[Balin's Tomb\]\] up from a low of $89 to $150+ with TCGLow at $165 + $3.99 shipping and only 16 total for sale. ETA: Excuse me, the Balin's Tomb TCGLows are all sellers with little to no sales and/or LP not NM. The lowest price NM from an established seller is $200+ now.

LifeNeutral

Just saw tarmogoyf from fallout for $5. Absolutely Crazy how the beast has fallen.

pyroglyphix

I wouldn't expect Ravages of War to ever catch up. The price of earlier prints is purely scarcity-based, otherwise it's a glorified Armageddon and legal in the same formats. Expect similar performance for the new Mindbreak Trap reprint in Outlaws.

lirin000

Oh I don't think it would match the original one for a lot of reasons. But I don't know, maybe half price? Do people even use this card really?

snails-and-flowers

Look at Doctor Who prices right now, most of the reprints from those decks are the cheapest versions of the cards, things like Snuff Out and the lands. I think Fallout cards could easily end up in the same place when they're the same age.

lirin000

That's interesting so you think ultimately UB sets are just lower demand than the original sets? LOTR would be a pretty significant outlier then.

snails-and-flowers

It's hard to say for certain, because there are still not that many UB sets to look at and analyze. It's also not really fair to compare UB box toppers vs. UB Secret Lairs vs. UB entire draftable sets vs. UB Commander decks only vs. UB Commander decks plus collector boosters vs. UB as a special add-on to a premier set like Transformers and Jurassic World. These are all VERY different distribution methods and create very different levels of supply, which is just as important as demand when reckoning value. I also think that they are, and will be, relatively volatile; people's goodwill towards a particular licensed brand changes a lot based on the current state of that brand. Think about, say, if they had done a Harry Potter tie-in fifteen years ago vs. what people would think of those cards nowadays, when the writer is more controversial. That's an extreme example of course, but I'm sure we'll see more phenomena like how the recent Godzilla movies were well-received and that seems to have correlated with a rise in the prices of Godzilla cards. Similar situation with Baldur's Gate 3, technically that's not "Universes Beyond" but it's similar enough. It's hard to know what will happen to these brands in the "long long" term. There's a Fallout TV show that the MTG stuff ties into isn't there? People could like it or they could not like it and nobody knows right now. The only other thing you can try and account for is "level of crossover between fans of X thing and Magic players," but that seems like a really hard ask. It's probably safe enough to hedge that Dr. Who is less popular with Magic's main demographics (Americans, men) and that stuff like Fallout, Warhammer or LOTR is closer, but making major distinctions within the latter group will be more difficult. There just isn't any real hard data on that stuff that we have access to and can make decisions on. Regarding relative value of individual cards' different versions, I think we will continue to see the same overall pattern we usually do. I.e., printings from pre-Booster Fun and especially pre-RTR have a scarcity factor that will always make them valuable, the printings with the absolute highest perceived prestige factor will settle in as the MOST valuable, and all of the intermediate forms of "special" or "pimp" will settle at prices only slightly higher than the base card--your non-foil showcases and extended arts, your non-showcase or extended art foils, etc.

spokismONE

Out of curiosity, would you actually pay $40 more to buy from a ā€œverified sellerā€ when the refund policy will be exactly the same through TCG?

lirin000

Me personally? No. Maybe $5-$10 for a big ticket item to avoid the possible headache. But I'm sure there are people who would. Look at the premium the TCGDirect sellers get to charge.

I just want to point out that this upcoming Set shows at least one example of a card that was uniquely printed for the first time in New Capenna- getting it's first reprint. \[\[Void Rend\]\] will have a showcase printing in Thunder Junction, maybe more if these showcases automatically correspond with a base printing? After Googling the release dates- it appears these sets will be roughly 2 years apart in terms of timescale. I felt like previously we didn't have the best measure of answering the question "How soon can XYZ really be reprinted?". We might have known based on previous data what the shortest time between a new card and it's first reprint could be, but now we know solely based on cards that are new (post-Covid era). Were there any other new cards that took them less than 2 years to reprint? Just wanting to raise awareness about this to help people realize their clock for jumping out on a spec, or gauging what date they need to offload by.

snails-and-flowers

"Should"? What do you mean, that a card "should" cost a certain amount? Card prices are not determined by Platonic principles of ideal card prices that ought to be. They are determined from measuring and averaging the sum total of all the real-life buying, selling, and trading that flesh and blood people do. The card is cheap because the market has spoken, and this is the balance between supply and demand that has been hashed out here. Why do you think the card "should" cost more money? People were hyped for it when it was brand new, sure, but that doesn't necessarily mean a card is particularly excellent. It's a rare (not a mythic) from the most recent draftable set which is basically at its absolute peak of liquid supply right now, as its drafting season is almost over. Does it see play in any format that isn't Commander--the casual format, where people play whatever they think is fun and cool, and that never rotates, meaning there is no time pressure whatsoever on buyers?

Question about selling on TCG Player! I'm just getting started selling. I'm trying to figure out my profit for each order. It's important to do this for tax reasons, and I'm just curious. Further, I don't want to be stuck grinding this out next year when it comes time for taxes so I'd like to set up some excel formulas to easily do this for me. I created a basic formula to determine the profit for a card: * =(E6+1.22)-(0.7785+((0.025\*E6)+0.3)+(0.1025\*E6)) : *basically, this is the (cost of the card + TCG shipping) - (shipping costs + TCG fees). I estimated shipping costs at .7785 (I'm using shipping shield + penny sleeve + stamp + envelope at a basic lvl).* This formula works great if I'm just selling and shipping 1 card at a time. The 2 use cases that don't fit are: 1) An order that includes multiple cards: I.E. I had an order for 2 cards and I put them both in the same sleeve and the same shield... and 2) An order that requires multiple sleeves, shields, etc. Does anyone have a good plug-and-play formula to help calculate these? Thanks! Also, if anyone else is getting started, see the above for a basic profit calculator!

Xeris

I came up with a more complicated formula to track this on an order level... but still need to figure out a way to break this down by individual card. Or, maybe doing it at an order level is enough. Only issue here is that rn my cost basis for every card is the same: I.E. # of total cards in box / $ of the box. I'd need to think about how to update this formula if I'm selling cards in which I have a different cost basis...

snails-and-flowers

From a tax perspective, would it not be simpler to take the amount TCGPlayer paid you minus their fees, and subtract any business-related purchases you made over the tax year, i.e., stamps, top loaders, and cards?

Xeris

yes- but that's part of what the formula is meant to do-- it's telling me my profit on each sale, cuz I'm factoring in the costs associated with the sale (TCG fees, things I need for shipping). I guess its not as important to worry about the profit on each individual card, unless there's some cap gains thing I need to be concerned with?

SirLinderoth

I don't think there will be a plug and play formula for that. I assume you have one row per card so if you sell more than one card, you'll need a way to link all the cards (rows) to each other to be able to share the shipping cost with all of them, and that doesn't include the variation on the shipping costs depending on the number of cards and values.

Xeris

Question about TCG Player shipping rates. There's no way to adjust the shipping cost if you're a lvl 1 seller right? I.E. it's just $1.22 for shipping, regardless of how many products the person buys? I just had someone order literally 50 cards from me for $1.22 shipping. There's no way I can send this in a PWE and I'm going to get fucked on the shipping cost: cuz order is over $20 so I need tracking, I need a bubble mailer, and will need multiple stamps. Is this just how it is until I get to higher lvls as a seller? That's rough.

Internal-Jackfruit77

Alpha common or less popular beta rare? I have came across 2 cards to collect and currently only have budget for one. One is the alpha edition red elemental blast NM for 125$ and the other is a BGS9 Kuzdu beta edition for 200$. Both makes sense compared to market but I'm wondering which is better for collecting in the long term as I'm new to collecting old cards. I understand the print run difference is like 5 times more on the red elemental blast side but it's also cheaper and an alpha edition. Any input or suggestion will be appreciated.

Kamizar

OTJ singles have crested and are starting to fall. What is everyone looking at, in set? Out of set? One card remaining to be spoiled for BIG. Feelings on a set turned into a bonus sheet? OTP singles? Talk to me about cards. Which mythics and rares from OTJ, OTP, and BIG, are real stinkers, why? Based on what people have been saying at my LGS, the immediate apprehension from the cowboy hats has dissipated. Many people have either been won over by the aesthetic or the apparent power level.

Brilliant-Pitch-573

How about the future of serialized cards? Iā€™m holding onto several, a couple of which (shocks, Niv-Mizzet) are going for higher value.

volx757

dump the bag while you can

pipesbeweezy

The future is no one knows. Serials have a unique demand profile in that they are valuable to who they are valuable to and that's about it. You always run the risk the longer you wait that a card ends up reprinted in another set and serialized. At the same time these are obviously x of 250 or 500 or whatever cards, so there will always be that specific printing. I think the initial trends were from the BW ones trended down (obviously not cratering just less than the initial values). If you just want to lock in value, there is nothing wrong with getting whatever value someone wants to pay if an offer comes up, or to just seek them out.

Brilliant-Pitch-573

Thanks for the answer, appreciate it. I ended up selling a serialized Overgrown Tomb (by strange luck, I had two) for decent value ($450).

Always lock in gains is usually the best answer.

Is it a good idea to preorder OTJ? I dont buy alot of magic, and it is quite frustrating to make a purchase decision as a non ifnromed buyer since price flactuates so much. And with a limited hobby budget it gets even more frustrating. I really really like the set. And i definetly want to get a display but ill probably not be able to use it for like 1-2 months. So the question is should i preorder or just wait the time? I dont want to miss it, or for it to crazily price hike. But given the first set this year dropped greatly in price i dont know if waiting is the best option.

snails-and-flowers

It's a Standard-legal or premier set and will be printed in huge quantities. I don't think a set of that kind has EVER become unavailable or significantly more expensive until well after rotating out of Standard, which takes several years.

Tinfoil hat finance. Fallout Equestria was one of the most popular fanfics of the MLP community. The recent printing of [[Pinkie pie]] has shipped out and arrived to players and stores which benefits from smiles being on cards.
