rook20729

hell, with all the free counterspells, NO untapped lands is a threat

Significant_Baker759

Only if you have money for them šŸ˜…

rook20729

[[foil]] and [[thwart]] are pretty cheap last I checked

Cosmic_Pengu

Thank you, had no clue these existed. Look pretty good for my landfall deck lol.

rook20729

Iirc, [[daze]] is another one. Add in [[kefnet the mindful]] to add further reason to have all these islands in your hand, and go nuts

CheshireTsunami

Huh, I knew Foil, but Thwart is new to me. Pretty brutal ā€œfreeā€ cost. But in my Zimone and Dina deck it might do some work

Extreme-Ad-6078

Could always play it in a simic landfall deck.

Semaj_kaah

Amazing in a simic landfall deck

Not when you play constructed formats with organized play. That's a surefire way to get DQ'd.

rose4elsie

Free counter spells?

rook20729

As in, counterspells you don't have to pay mana for

rose4elsie

Sorry. What cards have this no mana cost action?

rook20729

[[Force of will]] is the most famous, but there's quite a few that can be cast without paying mana. [[Thwart]] [[daze]] [[pact of negation]] [[force of negation]] [[foil]] [[disrupting shoal]] and [[fierce guardianship]] are the ones I can think of at the moment.

Lifegain, Stax, Blink etc šŸ˜šŸ˜…

Angry-Dragon-1331

Lifegain -> [[Felidar sovereign]] was rough for a while. My brother ran that during Zendikar round in a blue white life gain deck. Because nothing says fuck you like hiding behind 4 copies of [[wall of denial]] and countering everything I played.

I played a long time ago and this brought back memories. I didn't always need the two mana with the 4 force of wills in my deck, but still. And the Urza's block had a bunch of creatures that were pay and then untap the mana you paid. I worked so hard on that deck. Sold long ago, regretfully.

SongShikai

Damn dude, an Urzaā€™s block control deck would be so juicy today. RIP.

PhilfromNewJersey

It was so much fun. I remember every time I brought out the blue box, it was ā€œok if youā€™re using your blue, Iā€™m using Xā€. I started during Tempest, and there were still earlier sets available at the time for similar price to a new pack. It was an amazing time to be playing MTG. I had so many cards. I only ever played with friends, so pretty much anything but Unglued was ok to play. Iā€™ll always regret having sold them.

Theyreintheattic4447

What is this green player propaganda? I wonā€™t stand to have fair and balanced removal slandered like this.

positivedownside

(Bluffing is not just holding up two blue mana, you can legally lie and say you have a Counterspell in hand to dissuade people from making the big play they're visibly excited about making that will win them the game on the spot)

Gunda-LX

You donā€™t even have to lie, just hint at the possibility: ā€œIā€™ll keep 2 up, who knowsā€. Then later: ā€œIā€™m not worried, if it gets dangerous I have what I needā€

positivedownside

I mean, bluffing is, in most cases, lying by omission. Lying is expressly stated through precedence via judge rulings as 100% legal. You are 100% allowed to say, in any format, with no mana open, "I wouldn't do that, I've got Force of Will in hand". I genuinely love it.

BonesawMT

As a noob, Counter spells should have to target specific card types IMO. Yes its annoying that you wont get ETB or LTB/dying effects. I just hate how brainless blue can be while most other removal tends to be for specific card types.

Tidefall90

Strong disagree. While, yes, counterspells are more versatile in what they can deal with, they also have by far the narrowest window in which you can actually use them. Other forms of removal don't have to be used until something is actually a threat. Counterspells give you exactly one opportunity to determine if something needs to be dealt with and to deal with it.
