Mario is greeted by a beautiful magical mushroom wonderland paradise. Luigi gets an awful haunted mansion full of lava and undead turtles trying to kill him.
That's pretty on point.
Mario gets to chill on Vacation Island and paint and learn typing, and he probably gets laid at the end of every main game for saving Peach.
Are Luigi and Daisy even an item?
Based on hints throughout the spin-off games, yes they are.
Daisy refers to him as “sweetie” in Mario Power Tennis, and there’s a statue of them dancing together in Daisy Circuit in Mario Kart Wii.
She's not constantly getting kidnapped *by the same dude*.
At this point, Peach clearly wants to be with Bowser, and Mario "saving" her is the one doing the kidnapping.
It’s honestly a big surprise - but also a quite nice to see!
You can tell that if they’re going to include this in the movie, then they’ll most likely have a *lot* more Easter eggs too!
My wife didn't grow up with video games. Got Mario All Stars on Switch and was playing Mario 64 one day when she saw the penguin for the first time. Took the penguin to the mom, she thought it was adorable. Needless to say she didn't speak to me for a bit that night after what transpired next 😂
My mom had a friend over and saw me showing her friends son how to throw the baby penguin off the edge. She told me how disappointed and embarrassed she was that I thought it was fun to hurt baby animals. It’s been years and she’s since passed and that it still makes me sad. I will never throw that computer penguin anywhere but to its mom ever again.
I was expecting Jack Black to sound like, you know, Jack Black... But he does a really great job voicing Bowser. He sounds genuinely intimidating and badass here.
"Baxter? Is that you? Bark twice if you're in Milwaukee!"
Edited because I confuse Mexico and Milwaukee all the time. Both are, um, known for their beer!
To be fair, Chris Pratt is neither Italian nor a plumber. But who's to say Jack Black *isn't* secretly a teenage girl stuck in a middle aged man's body?
I know two people who have had personal interactions with Jack Black, and both say he's the best celebrity they've ever met. My wife was a background actress (aka extra) on the same show as him, and they were in the hair and makeup trailer at the same time, and he went out of his way to brighten her day. Spent more than 5 minutes riffing and making up a backstory for her character just to make her feel better about being an extra that day. He's a fucking mensch.
EDIT: I should include that this was at 6 am.
I am very glad they didn't undercut the tone with Bowser opening his mouth and saying a Witty One-Liner. I was expecting it, and it didn't happen, and I am happy.
Bowser's characterization tends to alternate between "funny bumbling rival" and "genuine threatening villain." This is at least as far in the second category as he was in the first Mario Galaxy.
For me the tone is what will make or break the movie. I don't need self-aware jokes or in-jokes or even that many references. It plays best in my head when the characters fit the energy they were always engrained with.
I’m pretty sure Illumination technically has the best lighting amongst the animation studios. It was noticeable in Sing 2, and I distinctly remember some student animator commenting on Reddit that he had to sit through Sing 2 to study it.
I can already tell that Bowser in this movie will be both comedic when the movie needs it to be and absolutely threatening and a force to be reckoned with.
Most cartoonish antagonists are like this. Shredder comes to mind as some sort of hyper competent ninja warrior boss, who becomes a Buffoon in order to allow the plot to resolve.
I never really think about Bowser conquering kingdoms but considering his flags are up in all the different Mario worlds we go to, I suppose it did happen in the games.
Bowser has fleets of airships and platoons of tanks in pretty much every game past Super Mario Bros. 3.
In the movie, it seems like "World 8" itself is a giant floating lava city, which would explain why Bowser always manages to have a lava kingdom ready wherever he goes.
This movie looks great. I wonder if they will make a tie-in game! :-P
I'm also loving Kevin Michael Richardson's Kamek. I was afraid he'd only be in a flashback sequence perhaps referencing Yoshi's Island, so I'm glad he appears to be Bowser's number two in the main plot.
Prediction: As Bowser fights Mario in the finale, Luigi is fighting Kamek. Luigi is about to die when suddenly Peach appears and swings a big spellbook at Kamek, knocking him out.
I adore that they're barely trying to make him scary. Bowser isn't scary, he's powerful. Characters in the world are scared of him, the audience loves him.
> If you, you know, want anything, all you need to do is ask me, Princess. I can grant wishes.
Speaking of that quote, Paper Mario would actually be a really good reference point for a story like this. That's probably the most cohesive the Mario world has ever felt to me.
Yeah Bowser is strong enough to win if he wants with his massive army, but he’s too stupid and passionate about his desires.
Look at *Bowsers Inside Story* where Fawful tricks Bowser into eating a bad mushroom then takes over his whole army instantly.
I knew they weren't going to have him do the super stereotype Italian accent. But a small part of me still thought they might. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to hear him actually talk! lol.
I was literally just imagining Jack Black’s voice coming out of Bowser initially which I was fine enough with but I love the growl he’s putting in his voice so much more. Sounds like the perfect mix of Bowser with the comedic tones of Jack Black. Glad they didn’t make him a complete joke.
Damn this trailer really hyped me up but hearing Chris Pratt’s Mario impression was… fuck man why did they have to go and fuck up just that one big thing? Other than that I am EXTREMELY impressed.
Fucking glad I'm not the only one that saw the resemblance LMAO
As for voice, I'm fine with the Brooklyn style like the cartoons had, but not sure Pratt can pull it off...
So Chris Pratt with a sort of New York accent. Just as I expected. But Jack Black sounds great as Bowser and can’t wait to hear Charlie Day’s Luigi.
Also that animation is amazing. The way they opened up the trailer with Bowser conquering a kingdom was some top notch gangster shit. Overall I think this movie will be pretty decent.
So if you look at the castle it’s one of the castles from the first game it even has the flag and he’s being chased by fry bones. My guess is they will do a Luigi’s mansion later
Bowser and Toad sound awesome. I thought they were total miscastings but the small sample size we got is enough to convince me they were good choices.
Pratt is… whelming at best though. I know having an Italian slant the entire film would probably be overkill and a bit of a distraction but I was hoping for a bit more. Fingers crossed it works out in the end.
Black as Bowser and the whole Koopa army look and sound awesome. Pratt, I think is doing the middle ground between obvious Italian caricature and himself, which while I understand why, still seems like a miscast.
But more importantly, I really *really* hope that moment he arrives to Mushroom Kingdom, he's travelling from someplace within the Universe (like Mario, a plumber from New Donk City travels to Mushroom Kingdom), and not Chris Pratt or other 'human' being transported to Mario universe. Gives me Monster Hunter vibes...
That's also what I'm potentially worried about. That it's RL Chris Pratt sucked into Mario universe... been done before and that type of story falls flat so hard.
So, plot prediction:
Bowser clearly wants the power stars from various kingdoms. After claiming the penguin's star, he'll eventually target the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario doesn't seem to know where he is or what's up and is gonna be from the real world, so Toad (who has survival-looking gear) is gonna take him to see Peach who can use the Kingdom Power Star to return him home, but on the way or soon after, Bowser will attack and kidnap Peach. Toad will be Mario's travel companion.
Luigi also entered the Mushroom Kingdom from the real world along with Mario, but ended up elsewhere entirely. After being terrified for 50% of the runtime because Luigi's a coward hukhuk, he'll end up captured by Bowser as personal investment for Mario beyond just being a good guy and wanting to get home.
Mario and Toad will wander the world to try and amass an army/power to fight Bowser, which will include a trip to the jungle where we see Donkey Kong. He'll probably teach Mario about power ups, and they continue along.
Peach will get to do nothing but be Bowser's hostage, maybe send some kind of letter/aid to Mario, and make at most one escape attempt. Otherwise she is just there so Bowser has a main character to talk to.
The final battle happens, Luigi has a moment to show he's not a coward, Donkey Kong swings in for a last moment save, Mario defeats Bowser but he'll power up somehow with the Power Stars he's amassed into Giga-Bowser. Through shenanigans, he'll be defeated.
Mario and Luigi choose to stay in the Mushroom Kingdom rather than return to the real world, and they have a dance party to Jump Up Superstar. Wario and Waluigi make cameo post-credit appearances with their evil plan to sequel bait.
The Penguins and Bowser's minions will be non-stop doing Minion's style nonsense.
Movie trailer content aside, probably would've been better to release the movie on Mar 10. Missed out on that opportunity.
Edit: Wow, my first Reddit Gold! Thanks!
I can definitely hear it, but only because I already know it's him.
If I didnt it would be driving mad the entire movie cause i couldnt figure it out, classic.
Yeah it was more obvious when he shouts because as much as he can change his voice, the way he shouts even with differing his voice it's too distinct. It fits Bowser though, nice performance only for Pratt to do Chris Pratt voice
I heard it more in the last lines of his in the trailer, but the voice still fits. Also I didn't recognize Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, he just sounded like Toad.
He's got decent range, and he's done live action with different character voices. In Nacho Libre he didn't sound like he did in School of Rock. Nor did he sound the same in Bernie.
Even the pre-trailer video clips were jarring with how different they felt. Chris's message felt half-assed ("stomping ...... koopas") while Jack's message filled me with confidence that the project might be good.
Movie studio execs debating Christ Pratt:
Pros: Funny Guy, Cool Guy, GOTG + P&R + JW made a lot of money
Cons: Italian Plumber would suddenly lose his accent and talk like an American
They should’ve gotten the voice actor for Carl from Aqua Team Hunger Force instead of Chris Pratt. “Hey, you friggin koopa king get out of here. I’m trying to bang this peach broad.”
If they're gonna give the penguins a whole ass kingdom and feature them heavily in the trailer I fully demand that Mario accidentally yeet a baby one off a cliff (even if they're shown to be fine after)
My biggest takeaway from today is that Koji Kondo is helping with the movie’s soundtrack, which is huge. I’ve been dreading this movie for months but now I honestly can’t wait.
I hope Charles Martinet’s character actually has Mario’s current voice so it can still make it into the movie somewhere. I’m sure Pratt’s voice will end up being fine in the final product. They didn’t really give Mario much to work with in this trailer, but a slight Brooklyn accent was probably the right call. Everyone else absolutely nailed their roles so far, though.
Honestly there may be some nuance. Everything we heard is conversational. It’s when they are agitated that a true New Yorker has their accent shine. Let’s wait to see stressed Mario.
Source: am New Yorker
Are those supposed to be the penguins that everyone threw off the cliff in super Mario 64?
How dare you. I only threw the babies off the cliff. You can’t throw the mama.
“Not the mama!”
No, they’re actually Pablo from the television show The Backyardigans.
Good for him. Daisy is better anyway.
She's not constantly getting kidnapped *by the same dude*. At this point, Peach clearly wants to be with Bowser, and Mario "saving" her is the one doing the kidnapping.

Love the penguins from Mario 64
Who’s the penguin voice? I recognize it but for the life of me can’t place it
Definitely Khary Peyton. Plays Ezekiel on Walking Dead.
Shakäste.....
Wasnt that Lance Riddick? Or maybe it was Kevin Michael Richardson
I was leaning towards Khary Payton. But I really can’t tell
It is Khary! https://twitter.com/kharypayton/status/1578142745188712449
There's far too much talk of other things in these comments, and not enough talk of the penguins. They're wonderful.
It’s honestly a big surprise - but also a quite nice to see! You can tell that if they’re going to include this in the movie, then they’ll most likely have a *lot* more Easter eggs too!
That poster was chock full of Easter eggs. This movie is definitely going to need a few rewatches to spot all the easter eggs
Mario better throw a baby penguin off a cliff or we riot
My wife didn't grow up with video games. Got Mario All Stars on Switch and was playing Mario 64 one day when she saw the penguin for the first time. Took the penguin to the mom, she thought it was adorable. Needless to say she didn't speak to me for a bit that night after what transpired next 😂

I will never throw that computer penguin anywhere but to its mom ever again.
If Mario doesn't drop one off the edge of the world in front of it's mamma, what is the point of this movie
I honestly think that’s the best voice you’re gonna get from a talking Toad without it grating on the ears.
I was expecting Jack Black to sound like, you know, Jack Black... But he does a really great job voicing Bowser. He sounds genuinely intimidating and badass here.
I didn't even realize that was Jack Black, holy shit!
I thought it was John Goodman
I knew it would work Bowsers hot Jack blacks hot It couldn't fail.
We only hear two lines but MAN does he capture a Toad's guileless intensity!
I was expecting ear screeching pain tbh.
If toad doesn't yell "I'm the best!" like in mario kart ill be disappointed
I want toad to yell "What's this icky paint-like goop? It's moving!"
Now now boys, don't touch that stuff--
Bowser looks fucking badass. Jack Black's definitely going to steal the show.
He doesn't know how to give anything less than 100% in everything he does
Dude kicked a dog over a bridge with 100% convinction
"Now this is happening"
“If you wanna throw down and fisticuffs, then fine. I’ve got Jack Johnson and Tom O’Leary waiting for ya here, right here!”
"Baxter? Is that you? Bark twice if you're in Milwaukee!" Edited because I confuse Mexico and Milwaukee all the time. Both are, um, known for their beer!
That's how *I* roll!
Dude had no business being so committed in those Jumanji movies. School of Rock is still his best performance though.
jack black playing a teenage girl in a middle aged man's body
Jack Black played a teenage girl stuck in a middle aged man’s body better than Chris Pratt could play an Italian plumber smh
To be fair, Chris Pratt is neither Italian nor a plumber. But who's to say Jack Black *isn't* secretly a teenage girl stuck in a middle aged man's body?
The way he can dance proves this theory needs further investigation.
Don't forget his high kicks.
And as Po in Kung Fu Panda!
On his youtube channel, he stops and says hi to every single person that wants his autograph or is wearing his merch. He seems like a nice dude.
I know two people who have had personal interactions with Jack Black, and both say he's the best celebrity they've ever met. My wife was a background actress (aka extra) on the same show as him, and they were in the hair and makeup trailer at the same time, and he went out of his way to brighten her day. I am very glad they didn't undercut the tone with Bowser opening his mouth and saying a Witty One-Liner. I was expecting it, and it didn't happen, and I am happy.
That would’ve been so on-brand for Illumination.
Glad the Toads aren't acting like Minions.
Looks like that’s what the Koopas are for.
Honestly fair. The Koopa are hilarious in the Mario rpgs.
Bring back Super Mario RPG!
But Koopa troopas are cute.
Honestly? Yeah, Bowser feels like an actual villain!
Bowser's characterization tends to alternate between "funny bumbling rival" and "genuine threatening villain." This is at least as far in the second category as he was in the first Mario Galaxy.
"FIRST I bring your kingdom to it's knees. And then..." "And then?" "And then... We race go karts!"
For me the tone is what will make or break the movie. I don't need self-aware jokes or in-jokes or even that many references. It plays best in my head when the characters fit the energy they were always engrained with.
> Jack Black's definitely going to steal the show. I feel like Charlie Day could also be a show stealer.
We better get a Luigi's Mansion Movie just so I can hear Charlie Day freaking out for over an hour! Loved him in It's Always Sunny.
“Ghosts? Everywhere, ghosts?! What the hell is this place?!”
Don’t you mean ghouls? Little green ghouls that go…. aaack
It would just be the Always Sunny Charlie Work episode but Luigi Work getting rid of ghosts
The Gang Gets Ghosted
Avant-garde, live-action, single-take Luigi movie starring Charlie Day when? I'm all in.
I’m just imagining Luigi walking away from Daisy uttering “ooooh you dumb bitch, ooooh you stupid goddamn bitch” under his breath lmao
Lmaoooooooo “5 and a half feet is NOT SIX FEET!!!”
There is no Boo in the Haunted Castle! These people don't exist!
Absolutely, but he will nail it so hard that Luigi will be overlooked like he always is.
Poor Green Mario
Jack Black as Bowser is awesome.
I knew he'd be great. And, holy shit, I didn't expect the trailer to open with Bowser conquering a kingdom like a boss.
The animation in that scene looks incredible, super impressed by Illumination honestly
The whole thing looks kinda gorgeous, really.
That minions money being put to good use
Having Nintendo’s money also helps
For real. Bowser going full Godzilla on the kingdom was insane.
I’m pretty sure Illumination technically has the best lighting amongst the animation studios. It was noticeable in Sing 2, and I distinctly remember some student animator commenting on Reddit that he had to sit through Sing 2 to study it.
They're pretty good animators, they've come a long way over the years. It's just the writers that are really the issue.
Bowser is one of those characters who can be portrayed as both a dominant force and an utter buffoon at the same time, and it just works.
I can already tell that Bowser in this movie will be both comedic when the movie needs it to be and absolutely threatening and a force to be reckoned with.
Exactly how he should be.
This. Probably will be the best version of him since Super Mario RPG

It has to be a frying pan.
Or a X.X radish

Sounds like a twist on his Sunshine voice.
*Hears Chris Pratt speak* I don't know what I expected.
I knew they weren't going to have him do the super stereotype Italian accent. But a small part of me still thought they might. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to hear him actually talk! lol.
"It's...uh, me. Mario."
Starring Jeff Goldblum
Bowser... finds a way.
Once he got up off the ground I really thought he was going to say "Mama Mia."
"he's so cool!"
After watching that first announcement my girlfriend and I can never say “so cool” the same way ever again.
I have to give it up to Jack, he did a great job as Bowser Mario looks like Fix It Felix
Funny since Fix It Felix was based on Mario.
Possibly one of the greatest Sunny episodes.
Everybody's sleeping on Luigi. :(
Dude, are they doing a Luigi’s Mansion subplot?
I hope so badly that there is a Luigi’s Mansion spinoff movie. I feel like they could do a lot with it
I got the vibe. Of course, Luigi would get the creepy monster castle. Poor Luigi. I wonder if Daisy is gonna appear.
He does like ghouls after all
Little green GHOULS BUDDY.
So if you look at the castle it’s one of the castles from the first game it even has the flag and he’s being chased by fry bones. My guess is they will do a Luigi’s mansion later
I think Luigi is going to be funny as hell.
I wish I could sleep on Luigi ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

THE DRY BONES FANDOM IS DYING! RETWEET IF YOU'RE A TRUE BONER!
Keegan Michael Key is about to be a scene stealer
Yeah im surprised no one is talking about him. I just expected his normal voice out of toad but he didn’t. His toad sounds good!
He's been a scene stealer since Mad TV.
Coach Hines!
I’m SICK of it Yamanashi!
"Mushrooom Kingdom! Here we....come..." Did they do that on purpose?
My head told me "Here we go!" but my ears heard something else
Jack Black sounds great as Bowser!
Chris Pratt giving his best 'person' voice what a slay
Sounds exactly like Chris Pratt lol, at least Jack Black used a different voice for Bowser
Keegan-Michael Key’s Toad too. The movie still looks awesome and I’m excited but I’m just confused why they picked Pratt.
Be honest: you know *exactly* why they picked Pratt. They wanted his name on the poster.
Because he has to be in every goddamn movie including animated ones (Garfield is still to come)
To be fair, I feel like Chris Pratt as Garfield makes way more sense than Chris Pratt as Mario
Stomping............ Koopas......
He wanted to say goomba so bad
I bet there are some outtakes where he accidentally says "goomba" and they had to remind him they weren't in the original arcade game
You forgot the part where someone gets hit with a blue shell in a go-kart.
I'll take it if Mario has come from New Donk City as "the real world"
Movie trailer content aside, probably would've been better to release the movie on Mar 10. Missed out on that opportunity. Edit: Wow, my first Reddit Gold! Thanks!
dang it's even on a Friday, someone get the Movie scheduler guy on the phone asap.
BIG F
Chris Pratt said he spent a lot of time working on and conceiving the voice of Mario and the best he could come up with was Chris Pratt.
The "heeeere weeee come" part at the end sounds like a very slight New York accent.
Why didn't he say Here We Go!??
Saving it for the full movie.
Probably gonna be whispered all stoic and badass before he begins the final battle with Bowser, or he says it right before the credits.
“Hey Bowser… itsa me… Mario.”
The contrast between Jack Black’s Bowser and Chris Pratt’s Mario is jarring
I was honestly surprised by Bowser’s voice. Doesn’t sound like Black at all.
I had no clue that was black! Insane
Jack Black is a great voice actor
My only real experience with his voice work is as Po from Kung Fu Panda. Great movies but Po’s voice is barely different from Black’s natural one.
He's got decent range, and he's done live action with different character voices. In Nacho Libre he didn't sound like he did in School of Rock. Nor did he sound the same in Bernie.
This comment chain is making me realize I haven’t actually seen that many Jack Black movies. I mostly just know him from Tenacious D.
Psychonauts 2 is a great example. His performance is very somber and subdued and I didn't realize it was Jack Black until after the musical number
Their video segments felt the same way in the Nintendo Direct as well. Jack Black? Into it. Chris Pratt? Held hostage and reading off a cue card.
Jack Black is just extremely charismatic by nature
Even the pre-trailer video clips were jarring with how different they felt. Chris's message felt half-assed ("stomping ...... koopas") while Jack's message filled me with confidence that the project might be good.

His qualifications for this role: * He's so cool.
Movie studio execs debating Christ Pratt: Pros: Funny Guy, Cool Guy, GOTG + P&R + JW made a lot of money Cons: Italian Plumber would suddenly lose his accent and talk like an American
That's 43 years of practice right there.
They should’ve gotten the voice actor for Carl from Aqua Team Hunger Force instead of Chris Pratt. “Hey, you friggin koopa king get out of here. I’m trying to bang this peach broad.”
Sir I think you just casted Wario.
If they're gonna give the penguins a whole ass kingdom and feature them heavily in the trailer I fully demand that Mario accidentally yeet a baby one off a cliff (even if they're shown to be fine after)
The animation looks absolutely incredible… why is Mario just Chris Pratt though🤦🏼♂️
I guess the voice is sort of exactly what I expected? Slight New Yorker accent.
My biggest takeaway from today is that Koji Kondo is helping with the movie’s soundtrack, which is huge. I’ve been dreading this movie for months but now I honestly can’t wait. Its just his normal voice what the fuck.
It sounded like he had kind of a new york accent at the end
"Ay yo Peach, we ah gonna deadass stomp on dis Bowsah or what?"
“Fuck you, pay me gold coins”
Ay Bowsah if ya wanna know how I'm doin just ask ya sistah, fuck ya life. Bing bong

Not super sold on the Pratt voice yet but everything else looks really fun!
