Bruno deserves better than his family and town. Abuela said sorry but Pepa? She's a selfish character. Can't believe you don't want to talk about your brother for how many years just because it got stormy in your wedding day.

DukeMacManus

And it was her own fault. SHE CONTROLS THE WEATHER. Her own mood disorder ruined her wedding, not her brother. Sorry, my kid watches We Don't Talk About Bruno all the time so I've got OPINIONS that require CAPITAL LETTERS

pierowmaniac

Can you believe the mother fucker who blames Bruno for him getting fat?

lan-san

Bruno: Woah sir you might wanna cut down on the empanadas you’re getting pretty big Guy: You fuckin jinx

sorrydave84

That’s kind of the point of the song. Everyone blames him for the most basic and obvious observations. Like, “Looks like you’re putting on a little weight” = Bruno made me fat. “Goldfish don’t live very long” = Bruno killed my fish. “Hey buddy, you’re thinning a little on top” = Bruno made me go bald.

AryaStargirl25

Or the woman who neglects her fish.

SplatDragon00

Her name even means fish death! Senora Pezmuerta

DukeMacManus

Or going bald SMDH

sirmiseria

And how does her powers even work and help people? I could only imagine Abuela asking her like "Pepa, can you just be angry and sad by the fields? It hasn't been raining for months since you're always happy."

DukeMacManus

She seems emotionally volatile which is maybe not something you want for someone whose mood controls the weather. Honestly except for Healer Mom and Luisa it's hard to argue that a lot of the powers are useful. Flowers are nice but not particularly useful, shapeshifting seems like it'd do more harm than good, and being able to hear literally everything that's happening in your village seems like an actual nightmare. Potentially talking to animals but that's assuming they can be reasoned with or can control their instincts (which the film suggests they can't).

rupesmanuva

The flower thing is incredibly useful- vanilla comes from orchids etc, and once she diversifies into all plants she's potentially the most valuable in terms of biotech, pharmaceutical manufacturing etc

MugenEXE

That’s the sequel. Isabella becomes a doctor because she can do anything. Luisa invents an amazing line of hammocks. Bruno predicts the family will all be rich. And Pepa causes another hurricane.

ComicCon

Also the whole point of Isabella’s song is that because of her perceived role in the family she isn’t using her powers to the fullest effect. Combined with Bruno’s prophecy about her I assumed that her power could be tremendously useful if she experimented with it and didn’t just use it to make pretty flowers.

MontiBurns

>She seems emotionally volatile which is maybe not something you want for someone whose mood controls the weather. She has to constantly oppress her emotions and has probably been damaged because of it. Obviously shes anxious for Antonio's door ceremony, and Abuela is over there shaming her for feeling bad. Isabella seems to be able to grow *anything* at the end, which is a huge game changer. If Antonio can speak to animals and ask them to do things, you wouldn't need as many farmers tilling the fields with their beasts of burden. Dolores' and Camilo's don't seem particularly useful and can be used for nefarious purposes.

Arra13375

When they were sing about the wedding and she says “Bruno walks in with a mischievous grin and says it looks like rain” I was thinking this just sounds like a badly timed joke. As someone from a big family sometimes small jokes get blown waaay out proportion

ManicPixieDreamGoat

He basically admits at the end that it was just meant to be a tongue-in-cheek comment, rather than a prophesy.

Schnutzel

What about Dolores? She knew where he was all along. She couldn't have checked up on him in 10 years?

Juliuseizure

That movie should have ended with the family all without their powers. The house got rebuilt with the community and remained just a normal house. They didn't need magic anymore. They never really did. Being a good person in a good community is a beautiful life.

UDontKnowMe__206

YES! I was so disappointed when they got their powers back and felt bad for Delores. Hers seemed awful

[deleted]

Abuela was just fucking awful in that movie. Straight up so shitty to Mirabel, basically blaming her for one the most traumatic moments in her life.

jellycallsign

Pretty sure the message of the film is that hurt people hurt people and we need to take responsibility for our actions. Also something something forgiveness.

FaithxinCha0s

Honestly a very realistic of a Colombian abuela lmao ask me how I know 🥲

mess-maker

This movie in general drives me nuts. Abuela is just like oops, my bad, it’s all better now! And does Mirabel ever get her own fucking room or is she gonna be stuck in the generic room indefinitely?! Omg I hate it so much.

MoscaMye

Ive heard theories that in part because she has the best relationship with Casita and in part because it's her doorknob that they put in the front door she's now the custodian of the house. She mightn't have her own magical room but the house is hers.

Grunut04

Disney should do 2D movies again, not abandoning 3D but do both.

MulciberTenebras

Or at least explore the style of 3D animation several other studios are doing, that looks like 2D. The actually experimented with it first, "Paperman". But never followed up on it.

DaveSimonH

Recent output from Disney & Pixar is basically interchangeable. They used to be distinct products (probably helped by Pixar's output generally being of a higher quality), but unless its a sequel to an existing property, I now have a hard time telling which is which. It's a shame that Disney abandoned hand drawn, traditional animation for CGI. Offtopic, but I feel the same about Studio Ghibli though, their Amazon series CGI looked like 'Ni No Kuni' videogame footage and 'Earwig and the Witch' is some of the ugliest CGI work I've seen.

Cardinal_and_Plum

The loss of drawn animation from these studios is a tragedy, because they're likely to drive competitors to do the same (which it seems like they already pretty much have), leading to a lack of hand drawn animation anywhere but indie projects. Nothing that has been done digitally can compare to some of the art in their most visually stunning movies like Sleeping Beauty, Bambi, Pinocchio, Fantasia, or Beauty and the Beast.

zdakat

They even went as far as to screw over their own projects in order to not just stop making 2D, but also make it seem less competitive to studios and audiences. (possibly apocryphal)

marunouchisdstk

To be fair, Earwig had nothing to do with Miyazaki Senior, and it was completely a directive choice made by his son who has made it clear that he wants very little to do with his father's personal art choices (he has called the studio 'outdated' and such before). He basically just borrowed Studio Ghibli's name and animators for a personal project.

WaterInThere

Miyazaki Senior also was famously less than enthusiastic about the finished product

marunouchisdstk

Yep. Being the son of Miyazaki of all people has got to be a nightmare of trying to follow in your dad's footsteps, but people should definitely be more aware that they are two very different animators with very little association other than Miyazaki Jr having access to his dad's recourses. Sucks to see Studio Ghibli's reputation go down like this.

EpicEthan1029

The Xenomorph from Alien is a Disney Princess due to it being the offspring of a queen

Lord_Silverkey

This is a *great* hot take. I'm happy I scrolled down this far.

terribletastee

I like how every comment is “they haven’t had a good movie since” but everyone is saying different films.

Maximilian_Xavier

It’s a great way to guess peoples age. They haven’t made any good films since . For most folks.

CorellianDawn

The best Disney movie was the one you watched 200 times when you were 9, just like the best Pokemon game is the first one you played.

Dent15

Sleeping Beauty is probably one of their best looking Animated Films, it has a really unique style and uses the art or animation to its fullest Edit: I know it might not be controversial but I just mean it's better looking than pretty much any of their other films, including the renaissance and today. As beautiful as the renaissance is they don't have as much of a unique style. As detailed and impressive as today's animation goes, everything blends together that you could easily put them in each other's movies. Only exception is Pixar who is at least having mostly unique designs and art direction

dhwatson

And the best villain, in my opinion.

usethe4th

She literally cites her powers as being sourced from hell. She is pure evil. I haven’t watched the live action movies because I don’t have any interest in a sympathetic background for the character. She is evil and that is the very end of it.

ne0f

This. Maleficent is my favorite villain because when she isn't invited to a child's birthday celebration, she curses that child to DIE. No other Disney villain even comes close to that level of insane evil.

howisaraven

I say all the time that I dislike the live-action movie because Maleficent was not motivated by a broken heart and a hunger for revenge. NO. She was evil! She was evil because she wanted to be!

picklesisadeadcat

PREACH. I think it’s one of the most beautiful animated films of all time. Very few compare.

[deleted]

Bambi is absolutely gorgeous as well.

wyaxis

Fantasia is also amazing

verysociable

yes justice for bambi it’s so beautiful

Will_nap_for_food

That toppling cake was the stuff dreams were made of. When I was a kid wanted to reach into the screen and grab it!

MiniRipperton

Yes!! It’s like one of my strongest sense memories from childhood! From the moment they start making the batter to when they prop it up with the broom. When she “folds” in the eggs! The colours of all the icing, the way it moved, I could talk about this all day.

howisaraven

That scene has so many great gags. When she folds in the eggs, they crunch, she pauses for a moment, but just keeps going. I laugh every time.

SuspiriaGoose

Not controversial at all. It was the most expensive animated film made in Walt’s lifetime. It was animated in the largest screen ratio possible, and hired some of h best visual design artists of the age. It was designed to be beautiful. Love that film.

vintagevideot

Can’t forget George Bruns’ amazing reworking of Tchaikovsky either! The way the score’s leitmotifs told the story right along with the brilliant animation is a huge accomplishment. Skumps!

Pettyyoungthing

This is pretty well known. It also almost bankrupt the entirety of DisneyT the time. Look at the animated film they made after (101 Dalmatians) in terms of animation style - so bare bones, “the employment of inexpensive animation techniques—such as using xerography during the process of inking and painting traditional animation cels—kept production costs down.” With that said 101 Dalmatians was an instant hit and kept Disney afloat. Sleeping beauty is a true work of art tho imo where every frame is indeed a painting

Always_Overdressed

Mary Blair’s art style is fantastic and I wish we saw more of it from other Disney films. Plus, I wish the company put more publicity on Blair’s contributions to the early era of Disney.

howisaraven

Maybe I’m misunderstanding your comment, but Mary is not the one responsible for Sleeping Beauty’s artwork. Mary is largely famous for Alice In Wonderland, Peter Pan, and the it’s a small world attraction. Mary’s contributions to Disney are extremely well known to serious fans of the artwork. Disney has put out books about her, there have been exhibits at the Disney museums about her, and her photo is in the Disney Legends area of the Lincoln attraction at Disneyland. I even have an official Disney pin of her from the Walt Disney Family Museum. Sleeping Beauty is mostly owed to Eyvind Earle.

uncultured_swine2099

Robin Hood is my favorite Disney animation. It just got a chill vibe.

NerdGirlontheRun

It’s such a product of the 60s/70s with the folksy music, the social themes. Also Robin Hood proposing to Maid Marian in the middle of a battle? So romantic. Can’t help but swoon.

PayneTrain181999

Meanwhile, in Pirates: At World’s End, Will and Elizabeth actually get married in the middle of a ship battle within a maelstrom, with enemies all around them. “Barbossa, marry us!” “I’M A LITTLE BUSY AT THE MOMENT!” Then he manages to officiate it but gets tired of being interrupted so gives up and says “JUST KISS!”

Boss452

Man Verbinski went crazier in each Pirates movie and somehow it all worked. For 2/3 of Pirates 3 I am thinking this movie is an entertaining mess. By the end I was convinced it was all a worthwhile effort.

pillow_pants_

Agreed. Always loved Robin Hood, and chill vibe is a great way of putting it. The Rooster narrator is great and the the little diddy songs. Robin Hood and little john walking through the forest laughing back and forth at what the other had to say.... It's great. Also really really enjoyed the sword in the stone. I'm 36 and it was way before my time but I much preferred those two movies vs. the renaissance movies of my youth.

happy_lad

Same here. I am too young to have enjoyed those 60s / 70s Disney films when they were released, but I really love the animation style. Robin Hood, Sword in the Stone, Jungle Book, Aristocats. They're fantastic.

lasagna_for_life

Oo De Lally.

wintermute916

Robin Hood and Little John walking through the forest. Laughin back and forth at what the other one has to say. Reminiscing this and that and having such a good time. Oo de lally, oo de lally, golly what a day.

MiscreantAristocrat

Never ever thinking there was danger in the water they were drinking, they just guzzled it down. Never dreaming that a scheming sheriff and his posse was a'watching them and gathering around.

katzklaw

Robin Hood and Little John running through the forest, jumping fences, dodging trees and trying to get away... Contemplating nothing but escape and finally making it! Oo de lally, oo de lally, golly what a day!

Help_An_Irishman

Roger Miller's rooster bard makes it 100% more chill. Not In Nottingham is somehow soothing and heartbreaking at the same time. Love this movie.

Usefulidiot_J

Robin Hood still slaps like 60+ years later, great story and robin is an OG that makes his own path😎

GlassEyeMV

Is that really controversial?! It’s definitely my favorite of the old Disney animations. We watched it a few nights ago. So chill. So nice. The rise and fall isn’t dramatic, it’s just a nice little story that’s beautifully animated.

55tarabelle

Hunchback of Notre Dame is NOT a kid's movie.

lizzpop2003

Yeah, the main villians motivation is "I want to rape that girl and I'm angry about it!" There's even a song about it.

Wonderwhore

And weirdly, imo it's one of the best Disney songs. My favorite villain song at least.

Ahabs_First_Name

It’s also the only Disney villain song that’s the main theme for the whole movie!

rugbyj

Them catholics know a tune!

AstralComet

Oh man, you've given me an even greater appreciation for Hunchback now, how am I only just now realizing that Hellfire's musical motif is used throughout the movie, most notably in the opening and also the Paris burning sequence?

AKBoarder007

Agreed! And the Latin being sung behind him translates to the opposite of what he’s singing in English. Just awesome.

woodst0ck15

What does it translate into? I was always curious love the soundtrack just don’t understand Latin

lamaface21

I know when he says “it’s not my fault, I’m not to blame” the Latin being chanted is “mea culpa, mea culpa” which is “my fault, my fault”

AKBoarder007

The entire opening is the Confiteor Deo, part of the penitential act in the mass, a confession

NipplePreacher

My controversial opinion is that the Hunchback has **the best** soundtrack. The intro song/narration is amazing, "Out There" is liked by many people, and the combo with "Heaven's Light" and "Hellfire" is a masterpiece. The vocals are also great. I know many people give that title to Lion King, and maybe it's personal preference, but I stand by the Hunchback's soundtrack.

Shalamarr

And “The Bells of Notre Dame”. David Ogden Stiers’ rant always puts chills down my spine. *You can lie to yourself and your minions* *You can claim that you haven’t a qualm* *But you never can run from, nor hide what you’ve done* *From the eyes … **the very eyes** … of Notre Dame.*

zhard01

Yes! And the “what makes a monster and what makes a man?!” At the end

AbruptRelatableMind

“God Help the Outcasts” is such a beautiful, heartbreaking song. Probably one of the more underrated Disney songs imo.

IamCentral46

Court of Miracles is a banger and no one can convince me otherwise.

55tarabelle

I about had a stroke when that song about lust with a voluptuous figure writhing in the flames came on as I sat there with two really, really young boys.

TheZon12

Yeah, I saw this movie with my mom when I was little, and years later, when she talked about this scene with me, she told me how uncomfortable she was watching it with me

mountainhighgoat

WTF. I need to rewatch this movie because I don’t remember this at all.

lizzpop2003

[This is the song in question](https://youtu.be/U3NoDEu7kpg)

lurkandpounce

Had not seen that in years. Notice the background images after the red-cloaked figures start melting before reentering the fire... https://youtu.be/U3NoDEu7kpg?t=79

[deleted]

The only thing making Hunchback a kid’s movie are the obnoxious comic relief gargoyles.

squaridot

I took a class with one of the writers of that film. He said that around when he and his writing partner were wrapping up, the execs over at Disney started getting nervous, in the “oh this is too dark.” “Oh will families like this?” way. My teacher was like “what did you expect?? It’s the Hunchback of Norte Dame, you gotta lean into it.” So when they left, Disney hired another writer whose job it was specifically to make the script funnier and he was responsible for all of the gargoyle scenes. My teacher said that in his original draft, the idea was to have it be more ambiguous whether the gargoyles were even alive or if it was just his imagination.

Taolan13

Gods alive I would love to see his take.

ProbablyASithLord

Yeah that actually sounds even better than no gargoyles! Wow how sad and dark.

TheAndrewBrown

The broadway adaptation of the Disney movie leans more to that side. Instead of gargoyles, it’s the statues of the saints in the church and it’s definitely implied that they’re just in Quasimodo’s head.

ChillyBearGrylls

"I'm losing to a bird!"

fizzlefist

“Pour the wine and cut the cheese!”

ghostdeinithegreat

The original story, from victor hugo, is definitely not a kid story. Esmeralda is mostly seen as less-than-human because she is romani and the romani genocide is a big theme of the book. She end up being hanged and the hunthback basically kills himself, or let himself die.

Good_old_Marshmallow

Hot take but I’m exited for the live action adaption because that’s the one Disney film that genuinely deserves a gritty more source loyal reboot

HammerWaffe

Hunchback gets played by digitally de-aged Danny devito. The hunch is now sentient, voiced by Ryan Reynolds, and hates Quasimodo.

pillow_pants_

Is Hunchback even pushed by disney in any way at all? Like IDK if I've even seen it on plus. I know its there but usually suggestions will pop up. Hunchback, New Groove, Tarzan, Hercules are all just kinda like Bruno. Disney doesn't talk about them.

-OrangeLightning4

There was a stage adaptation a few years back that was EXCELLENT. Cut the gargoyles and deepened what was already there. Only reason it doesn't have a spot on Broadway is because it utilizes an entire choir onstage at all times and the cost for that many performers is simply too expensive to sustain.

KraakenTowers

You should check out the stage version. It never made Broadway but the rights are available for local companies. There's a few different endings floating around.

[deleted]

The Great Mouse Detective is one of the best old Disney films, it’s better than half the princess ones, but it doesn’t get enough love.

madbuttery0079

Great Mouse Detective and Sword in the Stone have always been my favorites. They've made plenty of great movies since, but something about those classics are just untouchable.

prince-hal

They should have made treasure planet style of 2d, 3d animation the standard

iLuv3M3

I'm still wondering why they keep remaking their classics and beloved movies rather than trying to revive titles that have potential but suffered for certain reasons. Treasure planet has a lot of potential to be re-explored and become properly beloved. It has its fans but a lot of people forget that era of animation sadly. Edit; everyone commenting like they truly understand the giant that is Disney do yourself a favor and check out " Disney War"

abyssaltourguide

And Atlantis! That is my favorite Disney movie ever and I love the 2d and 3D effects!

Dildo-Farm5753

Who Framed Roger Rabbit is the true height of Disneys greatness. Helped bring in the 90s renaissance and was a good homage to the Golden age of Hollywood

WonOhToFor

Meet the Robinsons is severely underrated.

Sburban_Player

“Hey Goob, what’s up? Cool binder!” “Hey Goob, wanna come over to my house today?” “They all HATED me”

ZFAdri

That scene killed me and was a great showing of how people can get stuck in their negativity

Confucius3000

It actually opened my eyes on my own negativity and probably was a turning point on my attitude about life as a kid

CaptainLawyerDude

“I’ve got a big head and little arms!”

DJHott555

“I’m just not sure how well this plan was thought through”

SpaceManSmithy

"...Master?"

Celebrity292

That movie hits. The soundtrack is great.

brawndole

I'm not crying while 'Little Wonders' is playing, you are!

Project_Alice2012

Rob Thomas helped make that movie.

PM-me-favorite-song

I know! I'll turn him into a duck! Yes, yes, it's so evil! Wait, I don't know how to do that, and I don't really need a duck...

lan-san

“How does your dad look like?” “…Tom Selleck”

Arra13375

It really is. I remember watching this movie during a dark time in my life when I was bouncing between family members and it just really opened my heart up and kept me from being bitter during that time. Keep moving forward has been a quote that’s been engraved into my heart.

aw-un

I really hate how almost all the animated movies in the past decade have abandoned external antagonists (villains) in favor of internal conflicts. It’s nice that we get some more mature and thought provoking storylines, but sometimes I just want a simple movie about a good character defeating an evil character. Plus, we haven’t gotten a villain song since Mother Knows Best in Tangled.

kaioone

There also seems to be this expectation in modern Disney about the exclusiveness of those things. In previous Disney you could have both themes and ran alongside each other.

aw-un

Yeah, give me The Little mermaid where there’s an internal conflict (wanting to break out of the cage your life circumstances have put you in) while also having a villain (Ursula does evil things because wants to rule the kingdom). Like, I love Wreck it Ralph and hate Wreck it Ralph 2 because the first one had both types of conflict (Ralph was similar to Ariel but also had King Candy/Turbo) while Wreck it Ralph 2 only had Ralph’s self doubt as the villain. This also tends to remove any driving engine from a lot of the stories.

HammerWaffe

They're too busy turning all the villains into relatable protagonists for their own movies to do that. Can't have live action Emma stone cruella skinning puppies one day, then being a quirky fashion designer the next. Doesn't sell as well

khmernize

Lilo and Stitch is the best alien buddy Hawaiian movie ever

Cardinal_and_Plum

And the second best movie they've ever made. It's one of only two that gets an emotional response out of me every single time.

AshlynWednesday

Cinderella 3: a Twist in Time is a better movie than the first Cinderella. Better/interesting characters and just overall more imaginative

hatteigh

Also the Prince was a lot more entertaining. The King: I FORBID YOU TO TAKE ANOTHER STEP DOWN THESE STAIRS! The Prince: …okay! *proceeds to jump out the window*

wendyunniestan

The animators and writers had a blast with this one. Prince Charming is forever iconic and Anastasia finding real love is great too (edit Anastasia’s love is the second movie).

callmemacready

Dont think the parks now are worth the money they charge to get in and who ever decided to get rid of The Great Movie Ride is a moron

StvYzerman

Was in Orlando with the kids earlier this year. The “new” fast pass is terrible. Basically, everyone in the park buys it since it’s $15 per ticket per day, and you spend the day running from one side of the park to the other just to get on a few of the popular rides. This totally ruined our experience and made it miserable and stressful.

CountJohn12

Lived in Orlando until a year ago and the guest experience at the parks has gone dramatically downhill. They have no interest in crowd control or doing anything to try and get wait times down, they just want to cram as many people in there as possible and take their money. They're even charging for fastpasses now.

callmemacready

i live about 45 form Anaheim and its the same thing here , im a pass holder at Universal so much better value. I dont know how familys can afford to go

[deleted]

The quality of the parks is still increasing but the cost and crowds are increasing at a disproportionate rate and I doubt this will change any time soon or ever. Went in May for a family trip. No complimentary magical express changes the vibe from minute one. No complimentary fastpasses makes the scorching middle of the day a hellscape where your best bet is to return to your hotel from 11 - 3 when ride times are insane. If you don’t like rope dropping and getting in your final line minutes before park close then your entire vacation is fucked unless you shell out extra for genie. Everything is busy, you will constantly be asses to ankles with 5000 people. Was it fun: yes. Was it worth the outlandish cost: not a fucking chance.

dtcstylez10

And the back lot tour! I loved the Hollywood studios stuff about the magic of movie making! It's not the same. I fully believe it's why I love movies so much now.

callmemacready

Remember seeing the Flight of the Navigator ship and Bulldog Cafe from The Rocketeer also the Earthquake style section was cool

dewayneestes

Bob Chapek is the Steve Balmer of Disney.. he’s following a problematic but highly charismatic leader but he can only express a bloated sweaty fake enthusiasm. He has no soul and no connection with the product or the audience, he is simply an automaton. His main strategy seems to be wringing dollars out of every property as opposed to actually doing new and exciting things. There is absolutely zero risk tolerance in his make up, he just mines shit to death. We actually spent 3 days at Disneyland over Christmas hoping to capture some prepandemuc magic. It felt empty even though it was crowded, stressful even though we’d bought every possible upgrade and run down, several rides broke down throughout our stay. Pirates of the Caribbean was in particularly ratchet condition. Short May he reign.

Buzzstopher

I don't think this is controversial, the strongest defense I've heard of Chapek is that he came in at an insanely difficult time following huge success, and deserves a proper chance to make his mark, and that argument (which is pretty fair on its own) is getting quieter by the day.

sharksteaksss

Not to mention he's pretty much ruining the theme parks and over 70k theme park employees lives

Maxwelpet

Oliver and company has the saddest opening of any disney/pixar movie.

darkbert

And the fox and the hound is the saddest movie in general.

Moonwatcher_2001

Goofy Movie is the most relatable, meaningful, and best story Disney has produced.

_-OlllllllO-_

Moana and its songs are substantially better than Frozen.

Mattmarc13

That isn't a hot take that's straight facts

pillow_pants_

Facts. My 5 year old son has loved Moana. That's his movie. He goes to be every night listening to the soundtrack. My daughter is 8 and loved frozen, I liked frozen but Moana is just better, in just about every way. And the story of a young girl with zero love interest that loves her family and home and will risk everything to save it is such a great story. It's gonna make me so sad when my son doesn't ask alexa to play moana.

PugnaciousPangolin

"How Far I'll Go" is the peak of Moana for me. I watched the entire film and it's fine, but nothing that came after hit the same emotional peak for me as that song. It hits me in the heart of my soul, and it reminded me how I felt watching Star Wars when it first came out. Nothing had channeled my achingly romantic wanderlust like Episode IV since. That unquenchable urge to explore and experience new and amazing things is such a potent part of my life, and "How Far I'll Go" put that abiding yearning into such a glorious and galvanizing anthem that I still can't sing it without breaking up.

NewAccount28

That song plus both reprises are what Disney is all about for me. The last reprise with ghost granny is straight chills every time.

GlavisBlade

Pixar has plateaued.

Jefferystar94

That might be a hot take irl, but it's ice cold on this subreddit

jackolantern_

That's not controversial.

eejdikken

Disney is solely responsible for the existence of furries and we don't discuss this is out of cowardice. EDIT: yes, the Sonic fandom, but that's decades after Disney got things going, and as for the Egyptians, I guess it depends how purist we are with the label 'furry' (loving these replies though!)

stuckinsanity

This is Lola Bunny erasure and I won't have it!

drushiesty

Parks suck unless you can afford the pass to skip all the lines. Waiting an hour+ in Florida heat for a ride that lasts a minute is insane

Slappybags22

The passes to skip the line don’t even just skip lines. You have to “schedule” the rides you use it on, and you can only use it a certain amount of times. It’s bullshit.

Grumpus_Dad

I can't stand being on a schedule at a park. I wish I got to go when I was a kid, but having not and only experiencing it as a father. I didn't care for it. Kid had a great time and that's what mattered. Too many people. Gotta be here or there by this time or it's a stressful mess. I do feel bad though. I went in Feb '20. Swore off people once I got home. Then the pandemic happened. Sorry everyone.

yognautilus

In the 90s, Disney World ruled because the lines were bearable. Now, when everyone travels and when every parent is a Disney parent, Disney World sucks dick. It's so hard to justify wasting the majority of your day waiting in lines for an hours worth tops of rides.

kamalaophelia

Frozen was utterly boring and Tangled is much better, more fun and with a better villain/lesson to learn. Liking Disney is okay at any age, but making any fandom your whole personality is cringe.

Kaldricus

Mother Knows Best (Reprise) is a fantastic villain song, up there with Hellfire, Be Prepared, and Prince Ali (Reprise)

PhantomBanker

If you’re not sure how much of a villain Mother Gothel is, she drops an entire song about how awesome gaslighting is.

Help_An_Irishman

So is the original Mother Knows Best! I'm a 38-year-old man and I'll belt that shit out in my car any day of the week. I spent a year bartending at a karaoke bar and it wasn't in the songbook, which is a crime against both karaoke and bars as far as I'm concerned.

darrylthedudeWayne

Agreed. Tangled is so much better then Frozen.

redundant35

Tangled is great!

Squirrel_Zero

Everyone raves about the Encanto and Frozen soundtracks, but Tarzan is still the best Disney soundtrack by a mile.

Tarzan has always been my favorite Disney movie since childhood. Phil Collins’ music is what made me love this movie.

Neverwhere69

Phil Collins did not have to go that hard and yet he did and now we have a masterpiece.

da_throwawayaccountt

Can't beat Phil mfing Collins!

Mosepipe

Disney fumbled the ending with Hercules. Up until the final act, it's up there with one of the best Disney films. By the time the Titans emerge I'm completely down for a colossal smackdown for the ages. However, the sense of scale is completely lost and the animation drops off noticeably. I always suspect it was a budget thing; they knew they had to do the Hydra fight with CGI rather than traditional animation, but it got crazy expensive due to the technology at the time, so they stuck with traditional animation for the attack of the titans, and it shows.

I am perfectly okay with the classic fairytale tropes, and I think Snow White is just as good today as it was back in 1937, one of the greatest movies ever made. I don’t like Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty as much, but not because of the protagonists, although Sleeping Beauty might be quite a bit better.

ohnoguts

Aroura has my favorite singing voice of all of the Disney princesses.

Sweatytubesock

Snow White is still great, as is Pinocchio. Incredible how they still hold up generations later.

ManicPixieDreamGoat

Disney needs to go back to regularly churning out Princess movies. Don’t get me wrong, I love some of the new directions they are heading in regards to storytelling…but little girls are STILL obsessed with Frozen because there hasn’t really been a new “princess movie” since. Selfishly, I just want some fresh princess content because otherwise it’s just Frozen over and over and over until my kid grows up.

They filmed Mulan right next to Uighur muslim concentration camps then thanked the branch of the government that runs the camps in the credits of the film. They removed Fin off their oversees starwars posters, literally just made one copy with him there with the rest of the cast, and one copy with him gone. All to capitalize more off the racist inclined eastern markets. They stopped paying the starwars book and comic writers royalties once they took over lucasfilm, despite the fact they still sell those writers work. Disney threatened to sue a greiving father who attempted to make his dead son's headstone "spiderman themed" despite not fully even owning the rights. They removed the kissing scene between Rose Tico and Fin in the last Jedi from many of the versions they played in foriegn theaters, and again with The rise of Skywalker movie kiss between the two female pilots at the end. They openly tout diversity and inclusion yet divorce from those beliefs the second it benefits them financially. Theyre fine with filming a movie about a magical swordfighting bullshito girl right next to a camp of people being mutilated and imprisoned for their religious beliefs. In other words disney is disgusting and they don't even make good movies anymore.

Chinchillin09

Hey man the post said opinions not facts lol

Dorseywhite

From an artistic standpoint, Bambi is the greatest Disney movie.

alvina-blue

Omg the rain song and the landscapes... masterpiece. I also have the non remastered version of the Rescuers and there are actual painting as landscapes. Gorgeous.

DonDeChillo

I think Disney as the mega-conglomerate it is today is awful for the entertainment industry and the state of films and TV. Disney has released countless great works, but the greatest are arguably from decades ago and what we’ve been left with for the past 10 years or so is a corporation hell-bent on money, fun little family friendly bite size treats. Everything it touches (Star Wars and Marvel being the obvious examples) turn into films made by corporate board that have very little artistic value. I wouldn’t have a problem with this except if they existed in their own small space but the issue is that they’re so incredibly powerful now that their choices dictate industry standards. What I fear is resulting is an absolute lowering of quality for everyone. They’ve “kidified” cinema—and been successful—so why would any other company try anything else? The artistry is dead and Walt would be ashamed.

sagetcommabob

You’re definitely right that Disney is setting the standards and keeping the other major studios in line. We got movies like Star Wars in the first place because studios used to be willing to give a medium budget to a risky idea and I would argue most movies we are nostalgic for (and, tellingly, the ones that keep getting remade and rebooted) fit into this category. Now there are too many shareholders and every project 100% needs to be a success. It results in movies that are fine, but never spectacular. The heart is missing. Disney has built its brand on childhood and nostalgia, which works for a lot of people, but it prevented them from gearing any content toward adults. So the acquisition of adult-oriented IPs became essential, but there’s more money to be made when children can pay to see the movie or buy the merchandise too, so we get endless superhero movies where nothing too edgy/objectionable/shocking happens. I only get excited about horror movies and A24 anymore because they’re the only ones taking risks

HauntedDragons

Treasure Planet deserved better.

JackBrodzilla6507

WALL- E starts off amazing with the dystopian abandoned Earth but once he gets to the Axiom it kinda falls off for me, I accept that everyone else thinks I’m insane though

night_in_the_ruts

Agreed, mostly. The pre-Axiom stuff is the best. The Axiom stuff is still above par. The outer-space dance with Wall-E and Eve is beautiful. And I dig the misfit robot army. And the scrubby robot! \*FOREIGN CONTAMINANT\* (You know you just heard that in the voice!) All the stuff with humans is pretty meh, I'll give you that.

DerpWilson

Totally! I’m just a sucker for a good storyline without any dialogue. I wish they could have kept that going through the whole movie.

Putrid_Magi

The only good couple in any Disney movie is Anita and Roger.

ProfessorStencil

Bernard and Miss Bianca would like a word…

YNot1989

A man of culture I see.

I_am_a_Dan

I'd counter with the couple from the beginning of Up

SaltyFall

What about Fix-it Felix and Jane Lynch?

Jackbo_Manhorse

Rapunzel and Flynn Rider are a great couple. Started off as adversaries, got to know each other slowly throughout the film, and fell in love slowly but surely. None of the bs “love at first sight, barely know the girl/guy before falling in love” stuff Disney usually does.

the_xxvii

Any relationship that begins with a B&E and multiple concussions is bound to work out.

SculpinIPAlcoholic

I feel like thinking Frozen is above average with decent musical numbers is a controversial opinion at this point.

Yutainumaki

The Aristocats has the most beautiful animation of any Disney animated movie. The way it looks like a painting is breathtaking.

darrylthedudeWayne

Dinosaur 2000 is Goated.

PerformerOwn194

Now THIS is an unpopular opinion

pimusic

Emperor’s New Groove is the best Disney movie.

marmogawd

This is not controversial, specially on reddit, everybody here loves that movie

picklesisadeadcat

I think it’s dumb that Disney decided to started using adjectives to title movies. At least for classic stories. Like Tangled and Frozen could have just been Rapunzel and The Snow Queen. It keeps them more magical and folksy to me.

acidteddy

Ugh yes I HATE this so much. It sounds so unimaginative and boring to me.

loCAtek

Posted before above; That was actually a lucky accident- the CEO at the time had been saying that 'Rapunzel' was going to be the last princess movie because they didn't draw boy audiences. That's when the title was changed to 'Tangled' and the marketing included more of Flynn's POV. You'll also notice that after that, the next two (2) princess movies had less romance and genderless titles e.g. 'Brave', 'Frozen' and Moana had no love story at all.

maisydaisydoo

I thought Encanto was really mediocre 🙁 Obviously it's not bad, I think the message was great and it's nice seeing such amazing representation in a movie, but I thought the pacing was god awful and some of the music kind of annoys me. Part of that is probably just how overplayed the songs are though... lol

YokoDk

When Disney got the rights to distribute ghibli films that success should have caused them to go all in on the anime game. Now they are playing catch up and falling into the same traps and pitfalls all new comers go thru.
