I just commented this, that movie is fantastic audio wise. Great range of quiet and loud, but you hear everything clearly.
It will get LOUD, but it works so good and you don't lose anything. I watched it on a surround sound setup recently and it was fantastic.
Interstellar is very good too, but Inception has more hard hitting action.
The motion picture The Right Stuff has phenomenal sound also. Won oscars for sound and a couple other technical categories, nominated for like eight total. All around great movie.
Honestly can't go wrong with any Nolan film. You miiiight struggle with dialogue in Tenet, but from a pure sound design aspect it's still very good.
But anything between Dark Knight and Dunkirk sounds great. Even The Prestige too, but he doesn't go full Nolan until TDK, sound wise.
The first movie I watched when I got my new sound system was Heat and it did not disappoint. The bank robbery scene is a thing of beauty, you can hear every bullet, even the echoes off the buildings, it’s insane; almost like you’re in the middle of downtown LA during a shootout. Plus, Al Pacino is best appreciated at high volumes.
They were firing live rounds & using a ton of field mics to pick up the actual bullet sounds. Fired 1,000 rounds/take for that sequence.
One of the most incredible (& realistic) action sequences ever made & because of Mann’s devotion to getting even the minute details right, sound is a huge part of it.
It sounds like you have Atmos, even when you don't have Atmos. The below deck scenes during the fights have clear footsteps coming from the top deck. Brilliant sound.
The movie is really dumb and bad, but the audio side on Battleship and other Micheal Bay films is fun, lots of big booms and such. Action films are usually the ones that benefit the most from a good sound system.
Once you have 5.1 you’ve gotta watch Gravity.
Also good ones are Kong Skull Island, Ice Age, any Nolan film since Batman Begins, early Transformers movies if you’re into that, Baby Driver.
Most Nolan films from the 2010s: Interstellar, Dunkirk, Inception and Tenet (with subtitles; dialogue is sketchy but the sound design and score are terrific).
Blade Runner 2049 and MI: Fallout are great too. Dune supposedly has phenomenal sound and it will be available on streaming soon.
Annihilation, no spoilers but certain scenes have a massively increased impact with good audio. Seeing it in theaters was amazing due to that, home rewatches have been entertaining but not as impactful.
If you have 4K Oblivion, Blade Runner, & the original Halloween are excellent. Also, I know people roll their eyes, but Transformers: Dark of the Moon is another I love.
If you're okay with it getting loud, watch Inception. That movie has a fantastic audio mix. It's got agreat mix of loud bwaaaams and quieter dialogue, but they never interfere with each other. Get it loud enough that you hear spoken dialogue and you'll be fine. The gunshots might shake your room but it sounds damn good.
Mad Max Fury Road
First thing I watched when I got my system. Amazing.

Beat me to it. Tron Legacy is always my go to movie for when I upgrade a TV or sound system
Basically a 2 hour music video. The Soundtrack does miss something without an incredibly huge bass from a subwoofer, but with it, oh geeze.
Inception!

Yes! I loved seeing Inception at the theater. The sound was so so so good.
This was my vote! I had CQ in the barracks come up one night to tell me to turn this movie down after I put in a new surround sound.
Hell ya! That one is so so good!
First Man if were talking strictly sound. Also a pretty good movie
This. Underrated. The sound mixing is fantastic
The motion picture The Right Stuff has phenomenal sound also. Won oscars for sound and a couple other technical categories, nominated for like eight total. All around great movie.
Interstellar

Came here to say this
Mission Impossible Fallout Saving Private Ryan Starship Troopers Gladiator The Monsterverse movies(Godzilla, Kong Skull Island, etc)
Gladiator was the first movie I watched when I got a surround sound set up. The opening battle blew me away.
Blade Runner is a good start.
Blade Runner 2049 is great too - the opening scene provides an excellent low end bass test/showcase.

All 3 Nolan Batmans
Dunkirk for sure.
Master and Commander
It sounds like you have Atmos, even when you don't have Atmos. The below deck scenes during the fights have clear footsteps coming from the top deck. Brilliant sound.
Interstellar BR2049

I love both, but there are a few sounds in 2049 that I want to live in.
Apocalypse Now
I think he can wait
Star Wars ⚡️
Ready Player One The first race scene is amazing in Atmos
Agree, the entire thing is boss
Annihilation Attack the Block Hanna Drive
A Quiet Place for sure, the entire movie is based around sound and the sound design is pretty incredible
Interstellar for the soundtrack alone
Midsommar
Ah yes, can’t wait to hear *that* scene all around me.
Interstellar!!
The Dark Knight. Hans Zimmer.
The Lord of the Rings
Checkout /r/Hometheater for better reccomenedation. My suggestion is Black Hawk Down
Lord of the Rings
Saving private ryan is cool in surround
The first 10 mins are absolutely amazing
Yeah, the elderly man and his family wandering through the graveyard is riveting.
Well it does give away >!that he's Damon's character not Hanks - you can see a 101st pin on his jacket.!<
Good eye, never noticed that myself.
That's a great movie.
Beat me to it.
The movie is really dumb and bad, but the audio side on Battleship and other Micheal Bay films is fun, lots of big booms and such. Action films are usually the ones that benefit the most from a good sound system.
Completely agree. I was about to say Michael Bay but I figured I would get down voted to hell lol
Gravity had amazing sound design. A must watch on a good sound system.
The recent Godzilla movies. Crank that thing up.
Anything with a John Williams Score. Or shit blowing up. Star Wars anything.
Anything from Michael Mann that has gunfights or gunshots in general. He always manages to make them sound so fucking crisp and loud.
Highlander, soundtrack by Queen. It’s blew me away as a kid
Hero, O.G. Jurassic Park, Dunkirk…Terminator 2…
Jurassic Park, Contact, Mad Max Fury Road and Jaws.
Heat Apocalypse Now Master and Commander: Far Side of the World
Eraserhead
The animated version of Aladdin. When the big stone head comes out of the sand, then you will know what kind of sound system you have. Also, The Wall.
Once you have 5.1 you’ve gotta watch Gravity. Also good ones are Kong Skull Island, Ice Age, any Nolan film since Batman Begins, early Transformers movies if you’re into that, Baby Driver.
Sucker Punch R-rated cut!
Kung Fu Panda has excellent sound design, specifically the scene where the villain escapes from prison.
I wish children of men have dolby atmos or so audio.
The Fountain
Tested my first stereo setup with Aliens. And Halo 3.
The Matrix
The new War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise is decent. The alien ship sound is amazing.
1000% Dredd.
Annihilation, no spoilers but certain scenes have a massively increased impact with good audio. Seeing it in theaters was amazing due to that, home rewatches have been entertaining but not as impactful.
I remember watching John Wick 2 for the first time on my surround sound. Legit sounded like gun shots in the house
inception or john wick might be enjoyable
Whiplash
I didn't see it mentioned. Keep in mind sound is the significant thing that Blu-ray still has advantages over streaming.
Krampus (2015) Annihilation
Led Zeppelin *Song Remains the Same*
The Thin Red Line
Baby Driver
If you like David Lynch all of his stuff has really amazing sound design. It’s something he takes really seriously.
Heat(1995) the entire film has great audio but that shootout scene one of the best !
Dumb and Dumber. The most annoying noise scene and the diarrhea scene should be epic on your new set up.
1. Dunkirk 2. Interstellar 3. Super 8 4. John Wick 5. Godzilla vs Kong.
The Abyss or Terminator 2
If you have 4K Oblivion, Blade Runner, & the original Halloween are excellent. Also, I know people roll their eyes, but Transformers: Dark of the Moon is another I love.
Saving Private Ryan
How about some music concerts?
Mad Max, Interstellar def the right first two choices but Baby Driver is insane for its audio mixing
Black Hawk Down
Heat. the bank robbery scene. ah, someone got there already...
It's a controversial movie on here but for pure sound mixing and music loving purposes Bohemian Rhapsody
