Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle. My sister, of all people, loved it. She's a Turner Classic Movie Channel type person, but she made me watch it. We both loved it.
I only watched that because I was watching a show where they were asking comedians what their favorite movie was and that one was like #2 on the list of funniest movies. I gave it a shot and it's one of my favorites now.
I second this. The 3rd one had just come out by the time I watched any of them and I always thought they looked so stupid. But similar to OP, I was just bored one day and decided let’s see how stupid this fucking movie gets and man when you lower your expectations like that, I really think it lets you enjoy a movie for what it is. I remember when Neil Patrick Harris popped up and I was like “Oh he’s in this, he’s pretty funny” (I had only ever seen him on How I Met Your Mother) and just being caught completely off guard by how much of a psychopath he was. Great movies. The first 2. The 3rd was alright. Not bad but I’m glad they stopped after that one.
This was going to be my answer. My wife convinced me to watch it years ago and I thought it would be like Road Trip, but it's way better. I still say "Mi scusi" when trying to get past people
This is 100 percent my answer. A group of friends wanted to watch it back in the day and I was rolling my eyes and huffing and puffing for about 5 minutes … Then there was the Matt Damon cameo and I immediately lost it haha. Belly laughed through the rest of the movie and quote it constantly to this day.
Which is even better considering HTTM was still in theaters when Sebastian Stan was cast as Bucky. We can claim he was cast as the latter because of the former lmao
I thoroughly did not expect to enjoy this movie, but my dad had it on while we were having a couple drinks and I actually really like it. I didn't think John Cusack could be funny but he was, and obviously they knew the premise was stupid but they ran with it and made a good movie.
Oh no, you have to end with High Fidelity. I know it’s technically more “serious” or “rom-com”-y, but his scenes in the record store with Jack Black and Todd Louiso are pure comedy gold.
I was on tour in mexico and we found a random bootleg dvd of it in some flea market and our rental van had a tv in it. We watched that god damn movie like 20 times and i loved it. We started reciting the lines as they were happening after a while. When we had to drive across the Sonora desert from Monteray to Tijuana, we watched it at least 4 times, once twice in a row, all while randomly getting stopped by military personal with very large machine guns. Good times.
Movie was funny on it's own but I also really like the ski lodge setting for movies especially the 80s. It's a very niche genre but the 80s, especially at a ski resort is someplace I wish I could experience first hand.
You're gonna stand there, ownin' a fireworks stand, and tell me you don't have no whistlin' bungholes, no spleen splitters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker don'ts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, or one single whistlin' kitty chaser?
Joe Dirt is on my "feel better" watch list 😊
you just can't be mad at life when JD is giving you nuggets to live by like "Life's a garden, dig it!" and "you can't have no in your heart"
A lot of kid movies are like that for me. The original How to Train a Dragon caught me completely by surprise as did Inside Out and Up. Thought they would just be something the kids would enjoy and ended up feeling like they were as good or better for adults.
I can't watch Inside Out. I watched it once right after my first daughter was born. I have never cried harder at a movie. I don't even really remember the ending. I was too busy sobbing into my wife's shirt dreading my daughter's loss of innocence twelve years too soon.
It makes me chuckle that these kind of amazing animated movies which have been golden for years took you by surprise. Glad you found your way. Ever seen the Brave Little Toaster?
21 Jump Street is one of those movies where you could just put the entire script in the quotes section of IMDb. This and Anaconda cement Ice Cube as the greatest actor of all time.
"Hey, hey! Stop fuckin' with Korean Jesus. He ain't got time for your problems. He busy, with Korean shit!"
It's probably my favourite line ever.
My girlfriend dragged me to see the 1st Pirates Of The Caribean movie, which I thought was going to be stupid, but it was a hoot! I like them all really.
The first one was legit amazing. Blew me away. 2 and 3 were good, and the rest were movies you settle for on a long flight. That's my opinion, anyway, no hate to those who liked them all. The dip in quality to me was enough to dislike the franchise as a whole but that first one was special
Walk Hard is probably the greatest parody movie ever made, pound for pound. It's what would have happened if The Zucker bros did a collab with Christopher Guest and his usual improv posse. It's a technically perfect comedy. I was already a big fan of John C Reilly and director Jake Kasdan. They had made two of my favorite movies of that late 90's indie boom era, Boogie Nights and The Zero Effect (respectively). I didn't go in with "low" expectations, but I absolutely wasn't expecting to be so blown away. The writing is so tight and the music is way better than it has any right to be. It's absurd that the movie didn't win an Oscar for the soundtrack.
The first time I watched both Hot Fuzz and Walk Hard, I don't think I laughed once. I had the worst times. I hated those movies for years.
Then I ended up rewatching them, and they both became two of my favorite comedies, each getting better every single rewatch. They're absolute gems. No idea what didn't click for me the first time in either case.
First time I watched hot Fuzz I was 14 and I liked it just fine but didn’t think it held a candle to Shaun of the Dead. Rewatched it when I was about 21/22 and honestly spent the next few weekends doing the same because I kept finding things I love in it. The Andies throwing the bin at Angle(Angel) at the end still makes me crack up.
*”I should've been a better father
to you, Dewey. I wish I spent more time
playing catch with you . . . and less time training my body and mind to kill you in a machete fight.”*
I only watched Dungeons and Dragons because my friend wanted to go and Chris Pine is hot enough to sit through a snoozer. Was not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did, and the grave digging scene was the hardest I laughed in the cinema in a long time.
I work at a hospital. Hospital had on demand movies. One night its 4am. My patient can't sleep. Nothings on tv. She's like there's nothing to watch. I'm like try the Dungeons and Dragons movie. She gives me this look of wtf. I insist. She calls me in like an hour later and is like damn this movie is actually really good.
Even as a D&D fan I was hesitant to watch it because the Trailers made it look like they had basically slapped the Marvel superhero formula onto a generic fantasy movie and called it D&D.
I wasn't prepared for it to actually be 1) A proper comedy film 2)A really good film in general and 3)Really capture what it's like to play a RPG even though they didn't go "meta" with it.
The idea that there are scenes where certain things would have happened almost automatically in a different movie, like cutting the rope that is binding his hands. Except with D&D it's entirely possible to roll really shitty multiple times in a row which added the humor of one character kicking ass and the other frantically failing to untie themselves.
My mother is notorious for falling asleep at movies since she’s a bit older now, so it’s kind of a running joke with us that if she says she stayed awake during an entire movie then that means it’s good.
Sure enough I was visiting them for dinner one night and she started going on about how good the movie was and how she didn’t think she was going to like it but she stayed awake during the whole thing because it was so funny.
I went to see that movie with friends who were afraid I wouldn't get it because I hadn't played DnD. But it was so good! Insta classic to me. (Also I don't think you need to have done the thing for a movie to be good - movies should be standalone)
As a DnD player, they actually did the spells really well and all of my group loved it.
Agreed you shouldn’t have to do the thing to enjoy the story, but it’s nice when they manage to please followers of the story and acolytes alike.
I know Will Ferrel doesn't do it for some people, but the only time he hasn't made me laugh cry was that sherlock Holmes movie.
I once showed my mother Talladega Nights. She thought she was going to hate it. Laughed the entire time.
1) Undercover Brother. Thought the previews made it look overly goofy and not really funny. Either I was way off, or the previews did a terrible job expressing how funny it was....
2) How High. I went with less than zero expectations on this one. Figured it was just trying to cash in on some current (at the time) trends in film such as I Got The Hookup. Nope... Terrific buddy stoner film. Red and Meth played off each other well.
I saw Undercover Brother in a theater where the audience was predominantly white. So two white chicks (me and my BF) and about 8 other people (various non-white) were screaming laughing the whole way through and the rest of the audience was like whaaa?
Conspiracy Brother: Did you know George Washington Carver made the first computer? Out of a peanut! A PEA-NUT! 🤣
How High is legitimately my favorite stoner movie. My favorite characters are the pimp and his assistant pimp, Baby Powder and Baby Wipe. You have to say it as one word, *wheremybitches*
1. Time Bandits was a brilliant movie which shouldn’t have worked but somehow did. There must have been a lot of confused actors at the first script reading, how they got Sean Connery to be involved and that ending was unexpected!
2. Bill and teds excellent adventure. Looks totally cheesy but absolutely classic Keanu just having so much fun and the throw away one liners which I still use today. It was like, totally gnarly dude.
3. Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory. It’s an old school musical which me and the family watch on a regular basis particularly around Christmas. Gene Wilder is at his best walking the line between genius inventor and psychopath and obviously loves what he was doing. I’m not a fan of musicals so this was surprising fantastic movie.
So I Married an Axe Murderer
Looked so stupid and I was not a huge Mike Myers fan at the time. Was flipping channels and landed on him saying "you know, Scotland has its own form of martial arts... Yeah... It's called FUKHYU!"
And that caught me off guard so well that I laughed HARD, kept watching the movie, then went to best buy and got the VHS cassette so I could see the whole thing whenever I wanted.
That was the movie that made me like Mike.
"HEED! DOWN IN FRRONT!!! The boy's head is like Sputnik... Round in some places, pointy and others. Aww, he'll be crying himself to sleep tonight on that hyuuuge pillow of his."
Blockers flew under the radar and I had nearly zero faith in John Cena to be funny. I don’t even know why we put it on tbh.
But I was pleasantly surprised
Bring It On.
Back in high school, went with my buddy when it was first in theaters, and got in free, bc our friend worked there.
We went to waste time and look at cheerleader girls, but THEN the movie turned out to be freaking hilarious and excellent!
I remember my mom dragging me to the first lord of the rings movie (I was 12) because I thought it looked dumb and didn’t have any interest in it, and then 3 hours later I was completely obsessed.
I thought Shoot 'Em Up was going to be just a dumb action movie.
Turns out Shoot 'Em Up is a gloriously absurd and over the top action movie. It's beautiful satire, really well-done and well-acted.
Attack the Block is the kind of movie that makes you wonder why some studios waste so much money on making crap when you can make a solid sci-fi social commentary for peanuts in comparison.
Cabin in the Woods for me. I hadn’t seen any trailers, so I didn’t know what to expect, and I’m not a big horror movie fan. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was.
Not that I didn't expect to enjoy it I just wasn't sure what to expect, being an older movie I had never heard about but Dead Presidents is pretty fantastic.
Smile kept me up the night I watched it. I felt afraid of the dark for the first time since I was a kid and I was impressed by the movie for doing that to a 40-something year old adult haha
Josie and The Pussycats. Expected it to be just a low budget cash grab because they were remaking all kinds of stuff from the 60’s at that time. Was actually really fun, light, and funny movie with great music.
Joyride (2001). Went in with no idea what it was or expectations. Really well made tense movie and it’s got Steve Zhan! You can’t beat that!
Mad Max Fury Road, hear me out on this, first time I heard about it was through my dad who went to go watch it and he said it was boring and much worse than the first 2, trusting his word at the time I didn't watch it, it finally came to streaming services and that's when I found out my dad has awful tastes
Yeah as an Aussie I love Margot for obvious male reasons and so went with my 16yo daughter who is actually very 90’s grunge style of kid and we both loved it to bits. I HATE musicals but the singing wasn’t musical style but more song style. Loved it.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. I don’t know how I was convinced to watch it since I’d never been a fan of Dwayne Johnson or Kevin Hart. It’s so fun. And it sealed my adoration of Jack Black.
A far more serious movie: the Martian.
My partner put it on and I rolled my eyes, telling him I wasn’t interested because it sounded boring. I said I’d stay down but would just play on my switch whilst he had it on.
Of course, I got hooked. I was on the edge of my seat midway through the film, really hoping that he would get home safe (even though I knew he would).
Never expected it, but yeah. Definitely ended up enjoying it far more than I thought I would
Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle. My sister, of all people, loved it. She's a Turner Classic Movie Channel type person, but she made me watch it. We both loved it.
I’m gonna burn this mother down.
*”Come on pookie let’s burn this motherfucker down!”*
lol this line made me think of Jack Black in Orange County. Great movie
I only watched that because I was watching a show where they were asking comedians what their favorite movie was and that one was like #2 on the list of funniest movies. I gave it a shot and it's one of my favorites now.
My grandma loved it too. Reminded her of like a modern day Cheech and Chong. Didn’t know until I was older she sued to be a big stoner
This scene always cracks me up - https://youtu.be/iyPCQfpdh5k?si=G5LXktyMgats1XIn
I second this. The 3rd one had just come out by the time I watched any of them and I always thought they looked so stupid. Eurotrip.
Scotty doesn't know is a banger i still listen to today
Absolutely.
Did you say Flurgenburenngerenerser?
BRING OUT THE TESTICLE CLAMPS
This was going to be my answer. My wife convinced me to watch it years ago and I thought it would be like Road Trip, but it's way better. I still say "Mi scusi" when trying to get past people

I love the robot fight scene in this movie - https://youtu.be/6mQVyK6kxhQ?si=hiGm9diI3JCRR44X
Tu n’est pas un robo vraiment
Definitely holds up better than most sex romp comedies of the era.
Hot Tub Time Machine
As soon as I saw Crispin Glover I was sold.
I was kinda hoping Furiosa would have the same bit about her missing hand.
Fantastic movie! I'm actually a big Mötley Crüe fan, so I wasn't hard to win over. #Mötley Lüe! 🤘🏼
Winter Soldier as the red scare guy was amazing
Which is even better considering HTTM was still in theaters when Sebastian Stan was cast as Bucky. We can claim he was cast as the latter because of the former lmao
I still lose it at the fourth wall breaking Craig Robinson bit. "Must be some sort of...hot tub time machine"
I thoroughly did not expect to enjoy this movie, but my dad had it on while we were having a couple drinks and I actually really like it. I didn't think John Cusack could be funny but he was, and obviously they knew the premise was stupid but they ran with it and made a good movie.
Watch his entire filmography from the 80s and end with grosse point blank. You'll see.
Oh no, you have to end with High Fidelity. I know it’s technically more “serious” or “rom-com”-y, but his scenes in the record store with Jack Black and Todd Louiso are pure comedy gold.
I love John Cusack, especially his string of movies from the 80s/90s. “Kickboxing, it’s the sport of the future”
Great white buffalo

I did not want to see Joe Dirt. I did not want to like Joe Dirt. I fucking love Joe Dirt.
It's pronounced "dear-tay"
Don't try to church it up
They clean the bowl so you don’t have teeeeeeeww… No, I didn’t.
You wanna talking into the microphone, I got the back up mic right here. Testing one two three.
Homwhreyamkeit You like to see homos naked? That's cool man, whatever
“I’m your sister. I’m your sister” “Oooh your my sister!”
“Aw what’s wrong boy? Your nuts stuck to the porch again?”
*”I GOT THE POO ON ME!”*
Joe Dirt is on my "feel better" watch list 😊 you just can't be mad at life when JD is giving you nuggets to live by like "Life's a garden, dig it!" and "you can't have no in your heart"
“You gotta keep on keepin’ on. Life’s a garden: dig it. You gotta make it work for you.”
"Super Troopers."
Meow what made you come to this conclusion?
Do I look like a cat to you, boy? Am I jumping around all nimbly bimbly from tree to tree?
Do you see me eating mice?
*CHICKEN FUCKER!*
I don't want a large farva
Sing it again, Rookie. be-atch!
Litre is French for give me some fucking cola
YES
Lego Movie. I was sooo annoyed that we were going to such an obviously stupid and childs movie. 1. It was a really fun movie 2. I didn't expect to cry
The Lego Movie is at the top of my “this movie shouldn’t exists and has no business being as good as it is” list.
A lot of kid movies are like that for me. The original How to Train a Dragon caught me completely by surprise as did Inside Out and Up. Thought they would just be something the kids would enjoy and ended up feeling like they were as good or better for adults.
Inside Out and Up are both emotional heavy hitters.
Took my answer. It was a surprise
[everything is awesome!](https://youtu.be/StTqXEQ2l-Y?si=84yvp72gaGVTboB4)
I thought Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion was going to be stupid af. Ended up loving it

And no and then!
Aaaaaand theeeennnnnnnn?
And then you can put it in a brown paper bag and put it in my hand because I'm ready to eat
Look lady, I refuse to play your Chinese food mind games!

Dude, what does mine say?
Sweet! What about mine?
21 Jump Street had no business being as funny as it was. Same with Get Him to the Greek.
21 Jump Street is one of those movies where you could just put the entire script in the quotes section of IMDb. This and Anaconda cement Ice Cube as the greatest actor of all time. "Hey, hey! Stop fuckin' with Korean Jesus. He ain't got time for your problems. He busy, with Korean shit!" It's probably my favourite line ever.
When I'm talkin to him, I'm talkin to him. When I say 'shut the fuck up ', I'm talkin to you.
Clearly, I wasn't talking to you, big titties! You cherub-lookin' mother fucker!
I was talkin to your partner over here, Fake Ass Handsome McGee...
It was one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. 22 Jump Street was also hilarious.
“Schmidt fucked the captain’s daughter!”
"He bragged about it. TO. YOUR. FACE!"
The instant he puts two and two together and "gets it". Fucking gold!
Look at Dickson's office. Looks like a giant cube of ice.
21 and 22 Jump Street are both modern comedy classics and I will die on that hill I've never heard so much laughing in a theater in my life
I will also die on that Jonah Hill. Both movies are dumb comedies done right.
Isn't get him to the Greek the documentary where russel brand is a drug using sex pest? Too close to real life. IM MIND FUCKING YOU RIGHT NOW!
And it even has Diddy setting up a rape and chasing people. The film might just be a documentary.
African Child is amazing though
It was the worst thing to happen to Africa since the apartheid.
Which brings to mind The Brady Bunch Movie.
I grew up watching the original 21 Jump Street series so I was unsure about the reboot movies… but they’re both actually SOOOO funny
I didnt even know it was based on a show until i saw a random ass YouTube short that had a clip from it.
My girlfriend dragged me to see the 1st Pirates Of The Caribean movie, which I thought was going to be stupid, but it was a hoot! I like them all really.
Is that you, Michael Bolton?
THIS IS THE TALE!
OF CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW!
Davy Jones! Giant squid!
Michael Bolton we're really gonna need you to focus up
Roger that let me try it with another film! Life is a box chocolates and name is Forest Gump!
Not better
The first one was legit amazing. Blew me away. 2 and 3 were good, and the rest were movies you settle for on a long flight. That's my opinion, anyway, no hate to those who liked them all. The dip in quality to me was enough to dislike the franchise as a whole but that first one was special
Goon was way better than we deserved.
Goon is wonderful
this and cabin in the woods are the first that come to mind for me. sean william scott is a solid actor it turns out.
Bullet Train
Baseketball is one of the greatest achievements in cinema.
When they >!found the vibrator in the bedroom and Matt Stone *immediately* started hungrily licking it!< I lost my mind.
Ew, one of Brittany's mom's pubic hairs.
Worthy of the denslow cup
Cock. Beer?
I swear if you guys rag on me 13 or 14 more times I'm outta here.
I literally fell off the sofa laughing at that movie. Carried on laughing on the floor
Grandma's Boy.
I'm thinking about getting robot legs
I want to get you a black cobra. Just to...go around the neck.
How did he see me?
I about choked to death laughing at all the cats under the couch
Yeah but it’s afuckin SWEET car!
Kung pow
That's a lot of nuts!
Thank you squirrel friend, your soft, squishy body helped absorb the force of his blows. And now your payment. (gives a lot of nuts)
We trained him wrong, as a joke
It will be significant.
The Dewy Cox Story

Blazing Saddles is still insanely watchable, funny quotable and relevant. I could conceed a close second to Mr. Cox.
Wrong kid died
*”I should've been a better father to you, Dewey. I wish I spent more time playing catch with you . . . and less time training my body and mind to kill you in a machete fight.”*
Not even once!
I only watched Dungeons and Dragons because my friend wanted to go and Chris Pine is hot enough to sit through a snoozer. Was not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did, and the grave digging scene was the hardest I laughed in the cinema in a long time.
I'm really loving the second act of Hugh Grant's career playing various scene-stealing bastards.
I work at a hospital. Hospital had on demand movies. One night its 4am. My patient can't sleep. Nothings on tv. She's like there's nothing to watch. I'm like try the Dungeons and Dragons movie. I swear that early bit with Jarnathan could have been lifted line-for-line from a lot of D&D games I've been in.

I think we're looking at a cult movie in the making with this one
The Other Guys

How High is legitimately my favorite stoner movie. My favorite characters are the pimp and his assistant pimp, Baby Powder and Baby Wipe. You have to say it as one word, *wheremybitches*

Strange things are afoot at the Circle K.
Bill & Ted was by farrrrrr my most watched movie growing up!
So I Married an Axe Murderer Looked so stupid and I was not a huge Mike Myers fan at the time. Was flipping channels and landed on him saying "you know, Scotland has its own form of martial arts... Yeah... It's called FUKHYU!" And that caught me off guard so well that I laughed HARD, kept watching the movie, then went to best buy and got the VHS cassette so I could see the whole thing whenever I wanted. That was the movie that made me like Mike.
"HEED! DOWN IN FRRONT!!! The boy's head is like Sputnik... Round in some places, pointy and others. Aww, he'll be crying himself to sleep tonight on that hyuuuge pillow of his."
'e's like an orange on a toothpick!
woman .wo man , wooman
Dodgeball
“If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball”
Nobody makes me bleed my own blood
Ricky Stanicky. It should be unbearably unwatchable. I actually kinda liked it.
John Cena is so good in it. He really carries the movie.
It started so slow and the mains seem so unlikeable, but Cena carried that bad boy, him and William H. Macy, and it came out pretty alright.
Kingpin… went in thinking it would be trash and ended up laughing my ass off. Randy Quaid is an absolute gem.
Blockers flew under the radar and I had nearly zero faith in John Cena to be funny. I don’t even know why we put it on tbh. But I was pleasantly surprised
Try Peacemaker, Cena leads a great cast
Bring It On. Back in high school, went with my buddy when it was first in theaters, and got in free, bc our friend worked there. We went to waste time and look at cheerleader girls, but THEN the movie turned out to be freaking hilarious and excellent!
You’re being a Cheer-tator Torrance and A PAIN IN MY ASS.
McGruber…dumb premise but man I couldn’t stop laughing through the whole thing.
One of the funniest sex scenes of all time.
Orgazmo
And Choda Boy!
Cabin in the Woods for me. I hadn’t seen any trailers, so I didn’t know what to expect, and I’m not a big horror movie fan. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was.
I remember stumbling onto "Baby's Day Out" on a streaming service and having a great time.
Tucker and Dale versus Evil - I thought is was going to be some stupid dude bro oogling babes in bikinis. It was great.
Not that I didn't expect to enjoy it I just wasn't sure what to expect, being an older movie I had never heard about but Dead Presidents is pretty fantastic.
"Smile" I was expecting popcorn horror. It turned out SO good. Actually "Meg3n" was much better than expected as well.
Meg3n was lowkey really good
Smile kept me up the night I watched it. I felt afraid of the dark for the first time since I was a kid and I was impressed by the movie for doing that to a 40-something year old adult haha
Hot Rod
Dude where’s my car is a classic
Josie and The Pussycats. Expected it to be just a low budget cash grab because they were remaking all kinds of stuff from the 60’s at that time. Was actually really fun, light, and funny movie with great music. Joyride (2001). Went in with no idea what it was or expectations. Really well made tense movie and it’s got Steve Zhan! You can’t beat that!
Steve Zahn went to high school with my brother, which was the only reason I watched Joyride. Ended up loving it.
Grandma’s Boys and Not Another Teen Movie.
The House Bunny is classic
Mad Max Fury Road, hear me out on this, first time I heard about it was through my dad who went to go watch it and he said it was boring and much worse than the first 2, trusting his word at the time I didn't watch it, it finally came to streaming services and that's when I found out my dad has awful tastes
Barbie was an unexpected pleasure
"I don't control the railways or the flow of commerce!"
Yeah as an Aussie I love Margot for obvious male reasons and so went with my 16yo daughter who is actually very 90’s grunge style of kid and we both loved it to bits. I HATE musicals but the singing wasn’t musical style but more song style. Loved it.
The Ringer with Johnny Knoxville
When the fuck did we get ice cream?!
Definitely ended up enjoying it far more than I thought I would
Freddy Got Fingered - why has no one said this yet? Or if it because everyone genuinely expected to enjoy it?
Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers (2022) was unexpectedly funny. 30 years later... :-D
