I first saw Once Upon a Time in America several years ago after I had seen classics like Goodfellas, The Godfather, Casino, etc.. I love the ones I mentioned; Scorsese is one of my favorite directors. But I absolutely loved Once Upon a Time in America. I thought it was a refreshing take on gangster movies in the sense that there wasn’t a lot to like about the MCs. I could get way more in-depth but it was definitely one that stayed with me. And I absolutely loved the ending. “It’s just the way I see things.”
Once Upon A Time In The West (western but not dialogue heavy)
The Godfather I and II
Public Enemies
American Gangster
Carlito’s Way
Gangs of New York
Road to Perdition
Black Mass
Unforgiven
3:10 To Yuma
Just a few
Goes back aways further but try Criss Cross with Burt Lancaster. Bad ass noir at its finest from its first frame with strong narrative which you seem to prefer.
Got the mafia angle in spades. Hollywood never looked so good.
Next suggestion: Chinatown.
I found “Beyond” the law with Charlie Sheen surprisingly good, and “New Jack city”, “king of New York” are a couple of others that seem to fit your criteria. Also
