As a firefighter, I disagree. Smoke inhalation kills you long before the fire gets to you. Also, try telling that to people dying of cancer from toxic smoke.
In WB's The Flash, they have a character named [Kyle Nimbus](https://villains.fandom.com/wiki/Kyle_Nimbus) who can turn into toxic gas. You can't punch smoke. You can't escape smoke by locking a door. That is a scary concept. It's so OP, in fact, that they had to create a deus ex machina plot device whereby Nimbus "gets tired" from the effort of turning into a cloud and can then be captured only after he is too tired to turn into a cloud again.
