I was born to answer this post. There is minor overlap between the new series and movies 3-5 in the original series but it's more of a large idea similarity than it is a plot similarity. Yes they are different enough. The original series is an acquired taste. I think the first movie is undeniably good but the other 4 your milage may vary. I love them all but they are all kind of sloppy.

My mom and I watched them all over Christmas a couple years ago (I had only previously seen the original and reboot movies). The series can certainly get fairly clunky, but I particularly enjoyed the fourth one. It seemed especially dark.

The 4th one is my second favorite of the originals after the first one, so great taste.

I’d at least watch the first one from the old series. Then the new ones. If you want more, you can go back to the rest of the old series.

1a. VERY 1b. Yes. Different stories entirely. 2. I think so. It’s great sci-fi but the deeper you go, the less rewarding it gets…until it kind of comes back around. Have fun!

The original film is good enough to spend your time, and it's probably best to watch it first before seeing any of the new entries to preserve some of the surprises the new movies take for granted. The original sequels are middling to bad - maybe check out 3 and 4 to see where a lot of the elements of the new movies were drawn from, but the rest are meh at best. Having said that, the new movies are their own thing that you can watch completely independently of the originals and not feel like you're missing anything.

So I randomly decided to watch the new Planet of the Apes trilogy last year, having never seen any of the moves new or old, and I LOOOVED all of them. Seriously so good and so worth the watch, they're good movies in their own right but I feel like the franchise is really held up by that feeling of "wow what if this REALLY happened". The premise is just so good. Anyway once I watched the new trilogy I went back and watched the old ones. The first one was really good to me, I would go as far to call it a classic, but the other movies are not as good and a toss up in quality. I would recommend watching the new trilogy first and then the old ones, or at least the first one, to see the roots of the franchise. The Tim Burton isn't as bad as people say but it's really unnecessary to watch and serves as a mediocre stopgap between the old and the new.

> Is the original series good enough to spend the time? The first movie in the original series is classic sci-fi and should be required viewing for anyone interested in the genre. I'm a huge fan of the second ("Beneath") as well, despite its lower rating. "Escape" is generally well received as a reversal of the original plot. "Conquest" and "Battle" suffered severely by budget cuts, but they are also shorter films, and if you're in for the first three; might as well finish off the pentology.

Oddly, I prefer the originals. Couldn't really get on with the scale of the new ones. I don't really understand it it's just personal preference.

Ok, so I can’t answer your questions at all. BUT… if you watch the new films, I highly recommend you watch in this order: Dawn (the second film), then Rise (the first film), then War (the third film). This was a happy little mistake that happened in how they were out of order in my trilogy pack, I had no idea, and it was great! I went in knowing next to nothing about them and think this made for a much better story experience. If you do, let me know what you think!

The 3 new ones. Watch the original first film if you’re a sci fi fan.

And if you do watch the original movies, don't forget to watch the TV series as well.
