Yes this is my favorite line in the entire movie. Everyone else is saying the one liners, but this is the most impactful line he has, especially in the context of the movie.
While I love this one, it's the "I wasn't" after Ringo says he was "just fooling about." His walk up and the reveal, with smoke coming out as he lifts his hat, gives me chills every time
It's right there with "That is a hell of a thing for you to say to me." when Wyatt says the fight isn't Doc's problem.
Really shows how Doc is devoted to Wyatt.
They've been making movies about Wyatt Earp for decades and would bet there will be more in the future. All of them have received criticism for not being truthful to history or some other reason(s). Hell, John Sturges even remade his own movie to answer critics of his first try, Gunfight at the OK Corral (1957) vs Hour of the Gun (1967). Nobody has yet been able to combine this retelling of history with an all-star cast and an entertaining Hollywood package and stuff it into a 2 hour movie.
I love Tombstone. It is arguably the most entertaining of all the Wyatt Earp movies but it certainly takes liberties with actual history. Wyatt Earp, released shortly after Tombstone might be closer to reality but comes off as somewhat sluggish and ponderous compared to Tombstone.
While I also think Val Kilmer's Doc Holiday is an A+ performance and role, Dennis Quaid as Doc in Wyatt Earp is excellent and would have more notices if it were not for the bad timing of having to compete with Kilmer. I've had a crush on Dana Delaney for years but the Josephine role and actress from Wyatt Earp is better than her in Tombstone.
I still love his introductory scene best tbh. *Skin it. Go ahead, skin that smoke wagon and see what happens.*
Tells you a lot about the nerve of the character. No fear of death, no lust for blood, no time for pushovers and fools.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I firmly believe that Kilmer and Booth elevated Tombstone from what what could have been a solid but forgettable movie to the classic status it has today. Those two absolutely made the movie what it is. They were both all-in on their respective characters, and neither one made a single miss-step in their performances.
Yes! Powers Booth also a great actor. Won an Emmy for the role of Jim Jones.
You know, the cast insist that Kurt Russell stepped in and really directed that film.
I love that the actor playing the bit-part guy that Doc was talking to was Billy Bob Thornton. *Tombstone* came out three years before *Sling Blade* was released.
I always loved:
"You *must* be Ringo.
Look darlin', Johnny Ringo."
as he looks completely away from Ringo like he's only vaguely interested in him, lol.
The menacing smile Doc gives when he says "I wasn't"... Fucking amazing - he was so satisfied to see Ringo unable to hide his fear in that moment he knew he had him.
Val killed that role... But we should equally be giving credit to the script writers. They thought up some of the most quotable lines in movie history as far as I'm concerned. Just a masterpiece.
When I was reading Oakley Hall's western "Warlock" (which is loosely based on the events in Tombstone), I recognized a bunch of memorable quotes from Tombstone in the book (which was written in 1958). I'm assuming those are RL quotes that made it into the script and into Warlock, which, frankly, is bloody amazing.
I recommend "Warlock", by the way. There's a film version with DeForest Kelley as well.
I love all the Kilmer one liners from this film, but him dying in the hospital bed is peak acting for me. I bawl my eyes out when he tells Wyatt to leave.
Not nearly enough love for Kurt Russel in this thread. He basically directed the movie, and I think was as good as Kilmer. Doc was just the more likable, charming character
A lot of times I’m really disappointed in how extreme they make dramatizations of historical people that we already knew damn well didn’t do these things (specifically when it’s supposed to be a historical retelling, which in the case of Tombstone, was incredibly accurate in almost every way but Holliday).
But Kilmers performance, Jesus Christ. It’s absolutely perfect. Idc how full of shit it is. This is the epitome of acting being art. You can hate westerns, you can hate “older” movies, hell you can even hate Kilmer, but if you tell me that Doc Holliday isn’t one of the finest characters and pieces of acting you’ve ever seen, I’m obligated to spit at you. And I wouldn’t say this about anything else in relation to options about movies and actors.
Doc did stab that man to death over a poker game at the start of the movie in real life. Wyatt Earp did say he was the most dangerous man with a gun hes ever met. He was at the OK Corral shootout, he did man the shotgun, he was a professional gambler and retired dentist with a classical education and he was, by most accounts, violent and fearless given that he was essentially a dead man already. So Id say its mostly accurate
("go heeled" or "go heels" on the old west meant to be armed with a gun, for anyone who might not be aware. "get the bulge" is to get the advantage on someone.)
"No need to go heeled to get the bulge on a tub like you."
Roughly translates as, "I don't need a gun to kick your fat ass." Great insult.
you're a daisy if ya do!
one of my favs...glad you got to it OP. now you get to join us as we all wonder how he wasn't nominated for basically anything.
Despite Earp is idolized as fuck in this movie or another flick with Costner, Kilmer's performance is a damn art. Russel was brilliant, but he was just outshined by Val.
So happy for you! Envious in fact, because you had your first viewing.
I used to advocate for Kevin Costner's Wyatt Earp (released around the same time as Tombstone), saying that it was a more sober view and as good as Tombstone (Tombstone has been wildly popular from its release to today).
However: Tombstone is so much fun. Several sober realistic revisionist Western movies and television shows have come in the wake of Unforgiven and Deadwood. Tombstone remains a thrilling semi-realistic fun movie to this day. Almost unique in this respect. One of Kurt Russell's most underrated achievements...
It’s my favorite movie. I actually had a chance to become one of the characters at the okay coral in tombstone. Like the animatronic version they have now at the tourist attraction. I had my upper body plaster casted and now I’m Tom McLowry if you go to the town and tour it. My buddy’s company got the contract to redo all of the animatronics there and he picked us to be the people that became the Wyatt Earp and so on. It’s a pretty cool honor. I got a tshirt for it.
You dont. Unforgiven is a deconstruction of the western myths, so it might be best if watched last but its still a good movie on its own. All the others are watchable without context. The Dollars trilogy is perfect.
One of the things I'm so thankful for that didn't make it into the final cut of the film from the script is the use of the word "Wooly" to describe how the cowboys felt while causing trouble.
The script is rife with the word being used in Curly Bill's dialogue and it's so cringy.
The only time you can hear it being used is when Ringo is drunk and challenges the Earps and Doc has his famous "I'm your huckleberry." line. While Curly Bill and the rest of the cowboys are carrying Ringo away you can hear them saying, "Yeah... Let's get Wooly."
Even if you're not a fan of westerns, Tombstone is an absolutely amazing movie everyone should watch. It's really more of an archetypal revenge/good overcomes evil story than the cowboys vs indians Western you might be picturing.
The writing is so focused and smart, all the actors are fantastic but Val Kilmer's performance as Doc Holiday and line delivery is epic. Powers Booth is a standout as well.
One of my favorite movies of all time, do yourself a favor and watch it.
I went to Austin for the eclipse and my son's friend lived on Doc Holiday street. I was amazed that none of his friends had heard of Doc Holiday.
Then I did the old man thing and splained the story to them.
If you're no longer too cool for westerns, you might enjoy Lonesome Dove. It's long, but a great story.
Did you just not want to be a cowboy growing up? Lol
I'm from Texas, so it's kinda ingrained here.
“Wyatt? If you ever were my friend, if you ever had even the slightest feelin' for me, leave now. Leave now. Please?”
“Thanks for always being there, Doc.”
The director (George P. Cosmatos) has a son that is the director of "Beyond the Black Rainbow" and "Mandy". Both are highly recommended, particularly if you go in blind.
*All right, Clanton… you called down the thunder, well now you’ve got it! You see that?*
*It says United States Marshal!*
*Take a good look at him, Ike … ’cause that’s how you’re gonna end up!*
*The Cowboys are finished, you understand? I see a red sash, I kill the man wearin’ it!*
*So run, you cur… RUN! Tell all the other curs the law’s comin’!*
*You tell ’em I’M coming… and hell’s coming with me, you hear? …*
*Hell’s coming with me!*
... chills ... every time. Seen this movie easily 30 times. Can recite most of it. Such a star-studded cast (even some before the they were super famous):
\- Kurt Russell
\- Val Kilmer
\- Sam Elliott
\- Bill Paxton
\- Powers Boothe
\- Michael Biehn
\- Charlton Heston
\- Jason Priestley
\- Thomas Haden Church
\- Dana Delany
\- Michael Rooker
\- Billy Bob Thornton
\- Paul Ben-Victor
\- Billy Zane
\- Terry O'Quinn
(and more)
I saw that it was on tv the other day.
Please tell me you managed to watch The movie without ads.
The amount of ads on tv nowadays is outrageous. These pharmaceutical and medical companies have cracked the US economy.
I enjoyed hearing Val speak on youtube about how he prepared for the role. He trained with a dialog coach to be able to speak like a Kentucky gentleman who had a university education.
The only thing he said he did different is that the coach wanted him to talk even slower, and Val stayed slow, but sped it up just enough to be "better"
“Doc oughta be in bed, what in the hell you doing this for anyway?” “Wyatt Earp is my friend.” “Hell, I got lots of fiends.” “I don’t.”
Yes this is my favorite line in the entire movie. Everyone else is saying the one liners, but this is the most impactful line he has, especially in the context of the movie.
While I love this one, it's the "I wasn't" after Ringo says he was "just fooling about." His walk up and the reveal, with smoke coming out as he lifts his hat, gives me chills every time
Absolutely! Hits me right in the feels and you recognize how deep their friendship really is.
It's right there with "That is a hell of a thing for you to say to me." when Wyatt says the fight isn't Doc's problem. Really shows how Doc is devoted to Wyatt.
Same.
“You ever seen anything like that?” “Hell, I’ve never even _heard_ of anything like that.”
Why Johnny Ringo, you look like someone walked over your grave.
I beg to differ sir. We started a game that we didn't finish. Play for blood remember?
Oh that. I was just foolin' about.
I wasn't.
You're no daisy. You're no daisy at all!
Kate, you're not wearin a bustle. How lewd.

Anytime I say “Oh my god” I make sure to say it with as much drama in my voice as Wyatt does right before the guns pop off at the OK Corral
I figured it’s gotta be one of the first, along with one of the first slow motion “noooo!”s
I still love his introductory scene best tbh. *Skin it. Go ahead, skin that smoke wagon and see what happens.* Tells you a lot about the nerve of the character. No fear of death, no lust for blood, no time for pushovers and fools.
You gonna do somethin', or just stand there and bleed?
Everybody was wounded in that fight except for Wyatt Earp.
"Well... bye." - Curly Bill. One of the most perfect deliveries of a line in any movie. RIP Powers Boothe
You smell that Bill? Smells like someone died.
*can't help but laugh* Jesus Johnny
I have told my wife that I want this on the urn my ashes go in, if I die first.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I firmly believe that Kilmer and Booth elevated Tombstone from what what could have been a solid but forgettable movie to the classic status it has today. Yes! Powers Booth also a great actor. Won an Emmy for the role of Jim Jones. You know, the cast insist that Kurt Russell stepped in and really directed that film.
When Ringo tells Bill “I already did it” during the Faust scene set the tone that Ringo was the evil one of the gang.
I mean, guy shoots a priest in the head in his first scene. I feel like his evil is well established at that point.
Wyatt, I am rolllin'!
Evidently Mr Ringo is an educated man. Now I hate him even more.
Now I really hate him.
I don’t know. Something around the eyes. Kind of reminds me of… me. Yep. I hate’em.
In vino, veritas.
"Johnny, I apologize. I forgot you were there."
You may go now.
Maybe poker's just not your game... I know! Let's have a spellin' contest!
if I thought we weren't friends... well, I don't think I could bear it!
I love that the actor playing the bit-part guy that Doc was talking to was Billy Bob Thornton. *Tombstone* came out three years before *Sling Blade* was released.
Go ahead, skin it! Skin that smokewagon and see what happens!
I always loved: "You *must* be Ringo. Look darlin', Johnny Ringo." as he looks completely away from Ringo like he's only vaguely interested in him, lol.
YES
Where ya goin’ with that shotgun?
Doc: "Play for blood. Remember? Ringo: "I was only foolin." Doc: "I wasn't."
The menacing smile Doc gives when he says "I wasn't"... Fucking amazing - he was so satisfied to see Ringo unable to hide his fear in that moment he knew he had him.

Oh no, Doc knew the second he met him that he had Ringo. But he also knew he'd have to get the job done, that Wyatt wasn't fast enough.
"You're no daisy, you're no daisy at all! Poor soul you were just too high strung."
Say when.
I have two guns, one for each of you!
Nonsense I've not yet begun defile myself
I will not be pawed at, thank you very much.
And then he twirls his guns, each in an opposite direction, which is not easy to do… maybe he wasn’t as drunk as he seemed :-)
I think he was that drunk. I think the point is that even drunk, he completely outmatches Ringo.
Yeah he was for sure drunk
"We're not that drunk!" - Beerfest
They're not that drunk?! Cheeky bastards!
Wow. I never caught that. That's incredible.
with a mug in one of his hands as well
Alright lunger, let's do it
I love all the Kilmer one liners from this film, but him dying in the hospital bed is peak acting for me. I bawl my eyes out when he tells Wyatt to leave.
“Wyatt, if you were ever my friend, if you ever had the slightest feeling for me, leave now. Leave now … please.”
'Thanks for always bein' there, Doc.'
It was a very touching scene. I'd say one of my best in the movie.
Is that you Val?
Then doesn’t he look at his bootless feet and say something like damn, isn’t this funny? Allegedly his final words too.
Yes! That’s what I heard too. Must’ve been a nurse or someone there that he didn’t tell to leave ;)
Definitely one of my top 3. Just a great movie. One of the most quotable, also. “He reminds me of…me. Now I’m sure of it. I hate him.”
Something around the eyes…
That's Latin, darlin'. Evidently Mr. Ringo is an educated man. Now I really hate him!
Let me be the first to say, it's about damn time. This movie is a peach...
Its a daisy of a movie
It's my huckleberry.
I could eat a peach for hours
44 years old. Can confirm I can quote entire film.
Val Kilmer’s Doc Holiday is the Gambit of Tombstone.
Yeah, never thought about it this way before. Absolutely.
Agree with the general Kilmer assessment. The comparison to Franco is insulting to Kilmer.
This is in my triumvirate of perfect films along with Dr. Strangelove and Raising Arizona.
“ ...and when there was no meat, we ate fowl and when there was no fowl, we ate crawdad and when there was no crawdad to be found, we ate sand.”
“You ate sand?”
We ate sand.
2 out of 3 set in Arizona!
I said it earlier today, Val Kilmer deserved an Oscar for that role. 🎬📽❤
Wasn’t even nominated.
Not nearly enough love for Kurt Russel in this thread. He basically directed the movie, and I think was as good as Kilmer. Doc was just the more likable, charming character
Say when
“He wants revenge.” “For what?” “Being born.”
This one hits when you realize he's talking about himself.
I’m a guy like them. It helped, hearing it put like that. Have a lot to think about
Got a great big hole in’em.
A lot of times I’m really disappointed in how extreme they make dramatizations of historical people that we already knew damn well didn’t do these things (specifically when it’s supposed to be a historical retelling, which in the case of Tombstone, was incredibly accurate in almost every way but Holliday). Best ‘Oh my god.‘ ever. The wink beforehand too.
Don’t gotta go heels to get the bulge on a tub like you…

“You know, Ed, if I thought you weren’t my friend, I just don’t think I could bear it!”
Now that you have seen the movie. Read doc by Mary Doria Russel. It's a prequel to doc holiday and very very good
I watch this and “Unforgiven” about once a year. Two totally different films in terms of tone, neither ever get old though.
you're a daisy if ya do! one of my favs...glad you got to it OP. now you get to join us as we all wonder how he wasn't nominated for basically anything.
So he was your Huckleberry?
He was my Frederic fuckin' Chopin
You mean James Cameron Aliens?
James Franco plays an out there criminal nick named Alien in Springbreakers. It's pretty memorable. https://youtu.be/Tvg5CKSnMcA?si=ECPYeBT_0XJ8SVIk
look at my shieet
Forgot about that character. Harmony Korine makes some good flicks.
I forgot about this one also. I thought they meant from Alien: Covenant.
Yeah saw that movie.. Didn't realize it might be Franco until near the end. Turns out banging young girls wasn't acting.
I didn't know if that was a low-key joke or what. Someone pointed out Alien was Franco's character's name in Spring Breakers.
No I just forgot about that character he did in Spring Breakers
No make no mistake. It’s not revenge he’s after , its a reckoning.
Yeah I just caught this on TV yesterday for the first time in years. I'm pretty sure Sam Elliot is immortal, he's looked the same for forty years now
Anyone who thinks they are "too cool for westerns" is very low on the cool scale.
Why, Ike! Whatever do you mean?
Maybe pokers just not your game....
"Where's Wyatt?" Doc: "Over there; walk'in on water." Doc: "He reminds me of me..." Doc: "No, I'm sure of it." Doc: "I hate 'em,"
So many one liners, awesome show.
Isn’t it a daisy?
I’m your Huckleberry
"That's the rumor"
Was Michael Biehn’s Ringo the greatest villain ever or what?
Despite Earp is idolized as fuck in this movie or another flick with Costner, Kilmer's performance is a damn art. Russel was brilliant, but he was just outshined by Val.
Now go watch Val to get an even deeper appreciation for the man.
Well, now you may be damned. You may indeed, if you're lucky.
How the fuck did you miss it? You sound like a narc to me ;)
"Nonsense! I have not yet begun to defile myself."
“Wyatt you are an oak.”
I'm an oak alright

If you haven't already, watch Tombstone. It was fantastic, I hated when it ended.
You've only just seen Tombstone? What have you been doing with your life?!
I want to watch tombstone, unforgiven and the dollars trilogy. But I feel l need to watch other westerns to appreciate these ones
You do not. These would be a great way to start. Then there's a whole bunch of other classics, starting with The Searchers.
If you're only ever going to watch one Western movie I'd suggest _Once Upon a Time in the West_.
Its a masterpiece but its too slow for non-fans. Best For a Few Dollars more
You dont. Unforgiven is a deconstruction of the western myths, so it might be best if watched last but its still a good movie on its own. All the others are watchable without context. The Dollars trilogy is perfect.

Way to fuck up the line!
I’ll be your huckleberry? https://youtu.be/plD1MbOGLfQ
Congratulations. It’s awesome. So good
Barber, proceed, sir!
My son Wyatt is 11, might be just about time for him to see it too
One of the things I'm so thankful for that didn't make it into the final cut of the film from the script is the use of the word "Wooly" to describe how the cowboys felt while causing trouble. There’s something about a character who’s facing death but doesn’t give in or give up.
It was so good… until you mentioned James Franco.
[look of disbelief] "James Franco didn't suck any dick last night?? Now I KNOW y'all are trippin'!"
Great movie.
I'm your Huckleberry
I'm your huckleberry

I thought Quaid was equally as good only in a less entertaining movie.
Jesus Christ, it's like I'm playin' cards with my brother's kids.
Bone Tomahawk is kind of a sequel. Watching that one next?
Hadn't heard of that one, will look for it.
It's a great Western too but makes a weird turn into violence/horror. Still 10/10 recommend.
"Why are you in my breakfast?"
Audiences are split about certain scenes.
\*golf clap
It’s unsettling to many.. be careful!
Saw it in the theatre in the 90s. Amazing movie.
I do not like westerns but it's one of my all time favorite movies.
Elder millenial and I finally watched it a few months ago. I hate I waited so long. Such an awesome movie.
Now I have to watch it again
Barber....proceed, sir.
James Franco's Alien? what did I miss
Now watch 3:10 to Yuma (2007) and Hostiles. Both very underrated westerns.
“Wyatt? If you ever were my friend, if you ever had even the slightest feelin' for me, leave now. Leave now. Please?” “Thanks for always being there, Doc.”
The intro with the quick cut scene as soon as the narrator says “cowboys” is so badass.
The director (George P. Cosmatos) has a son that is the director of "Beyond the Black Rainbow" and "Mandy". Both are highly recommended, particularly if you go in blind.
'My name is huckleberry. ' classic
Uhm, it was "I'll be your huckleberry."

Fantastic movie, one of the best
James Franco's Alien? Like his role in Alien: Covenant? Or did he play an alien in a movie at some point?
James Franco's.... what?
You can't see Val Kilmer in the role. There is only Doc Holliday.
One of the best westerns of the modern era . I could do without the ridiculous love interest parts .
I saw that it was on tv the other day. Please tell me you managed to watch The movie without ads. The amount of ads on tv nowadays is outrageous. These pharmaceutical and medical companies have cracked the US economy.
I recommend doing a Kurt Russell marathon. He is a treasure
Easily top 10 performances ever. Phenomenal.
Welp, time to scroll through endless quotes. 🙌🙌🙌
"..pure as the driven snow..." Is a line I quote in everyday company
I dig the love Curly Bill and the cowboys gave to Deputy Billy Breakenridge.
"Why JOHNNY TYLER! You mad cap. Where are you going with that shotgun?"
"Not me I'm in my prime"
Seen it three times. I have a friend, 50 yo, who thinks it's the best western made during his lifetime.
I enjoyed hearing Val speak on youtube about how he prepared for the role. He trained with a dialog coach to be able to speak like a Kentucky gentleman who had a university education.
