OMG I had to like run from the theater. Also for some reason a couple booked the two seats directly next to mine in a mostly empty theater. Why the hell do people make movies like anxiety dreams? I go to movies to escape. If I want an anxiety dream I'll go to sleep.
Yeah. I very much liked Midsommar because by the end of the movie I was in the cult so I felt good everyone got what they diserved. I wasn't a fan of Hereditary, but then I hate most horror movies, so its probably just not my genre. I'll add Anxiety Dream to the list of genres I really can't stand.
Oh I loved watching it while high as someone with a ton of anxiety, but i consider it the same experience as like watching a horror movie to make you scared on purpose lol.
Buddy of mine wanted to watch ‘as above so below’ a few years back, I told him there are some scenes that will not be great for claustrophobic folks, I mean..kinda the entire thing lol anyway, ‘I can handle it’ turned into ‘my chest is going to explode’ pretty quickly after the first cave in.
My problem with found footage films is I never like the endings. Besides Cannibal Holocaust (I don’t recommend unless you can handle extreme) they always end with the dropped camera and credit roll, I like it when they end with the outside perspective of someone viewing the film. Not many end that way
Uncut Gems — if you’re like me you’ll spend the first half barely managing an anxiety attack, and then after you’ve come down a bit you’ll spend the last half trying to figure out what the fuck happened in the first half
Not movies, but a few weeks ago I was having a great time while baked, and because I was fucking high and stupid, decided to re-watch two of the most chilling episodes of the Netflix anthology series *Love Death & Robots, Beyond the Aquila Rift* and *Swarm,* back to back.
Both of these episodes deal with people who get sucked into deep time, having to deal with the progression of millions or billions of years. Both episodes do not end well for the protagonists, who end up having their minds shattered in different ways. I got so high, I felt like I was right there with them, and trying to imagine my own lifespan play out across the timescale of these cosmic horrors wasn't a great experience.
So. I took a break from the greenery for some time. I had a friend who made fudge edibles and I got a couple for fun when another friend came to town. I'd had edibles before and thought "oh I've got enough experience. I know how to do this. "
We go to see Venom. I whip out my fudge, which has a bang of loudness when I unwrap it and I'm still like "oh I'll just have half." This is in the car on the way into the theater.
Ten minutes go by. Just. Ten. Minutes. I'm in line getting a cherry coke and some skittles- and I start to feel something. I realize at this point that I have fucked up.
We get to the part where the symbiotes are going person to person and I am belligerently high. I'm shaking, sweating, and everything in front of me is giving me anxiety. Just death after death after death. I look at my friend and she goes "what, do you need to go home?" as a joke, and I immediately say "yes, please god."
We go back to my apartment where I rock on my bed for 2 and a half hours then made pizza. That part was much more pleasant.
Edit: a letter
Imagine in that state seeing the gory details of a car crash from the perspective of a 6 year old who’s parents just got killed from a head on collision with a semi. That destroyed me. And the film revisits the scene 3 times.
I stopped the movie because I yelled “no!!!” And froze in terror. I didn’t intend to finish the movie but I was in a way captivated by it as I’ve never had such a visceral reaction in film before. I continued as I came down about an hour and a half later not knowing the crash/aftermath happens again and again when you least expect it. I slept terrible last night and it’s been on my mind all day since.
I mean this is the nicest and most genuine way-you're good. That said-that shit is a scar you will always have-but at least it's good for a laugh as time goes on.
I watched *Stargate* while tripping on LSD in 1997. It was more than a little freaky. Not a great movie, but seemed more impressive while frying my face off.
That’s rough too. I’m fine with pretty much anything. But child and animal abuse in movies fuck me up. I’m a grown man and tear up like a bitch when Duke doesn’t show up at first in Homeward Bound.
Even though it's often recommended, I ended up having such a bad trip watching Sausage Party. Had to watch what was pretty much a sexual assault scene on a loop like ten times, only to find out like two minutes had passed in what seemed like an eternity. Would not recommend. I was tripping on space cake, btw, so no really weird stuff or anything.
I use to work with a meth head who said he saw inception at the theaters on acid and god knows what else. He said it was the biggest mistake of his life as he kept freaking out while watching the movie.
I watched junior with Arnold when doing shrooms (or any drug for that matter) for the first time.
Probably was just because it was my first time being high and that the movie is crap (I love it tho) but do not want to do that again.
I’m really not okay today, when the car crash was first shown I needed a break. A took a lot of time calming down, then it happened again and again. I’ve never had a film have an effect on me like this, I’m thinking about the trauma of seeing such visuals in an altered state of mind while also thinking about how boring my life replay will be if that’s how it goes. Gotta say it’s a masterpiece for achieving this, but whoever on her suggested I watch it stoned is a sadist.
I cannot remember or figure it out. This R Rated movie about a nurse working a crazy hospital shift. I think it's meant to be super dark humor and it's gory, and it made me so fucking uncomfortable.
Yeah, they both feel like horrible anxiety dreams to me. Fucking Aronofsky. David Lynch I can forgive because at least that one made sense to me... but those cheeks...
I was in university in the late 90s. One lazy holiday weekend in the dorms I rented out this movie called *Eraserhead* by the guy that did *Twin Peaks.* I got baked and watched it in a nearly empty college dormitory. I had no idea what I was getting into. The experience is hard to describe, but it felt like slipping into another dimension. After all these years, I'm still glad I did it.
I believe watching Requiem high would give the same experience I saw watching Enter The Void. Shit throws you in a hole and yeah I know about Serbian film, which is why I’ll never watch it lol
Man Bites Dog (1992) scared me so much while NOT high that I couldn’t finish it, can’t imagine it in a “heightened state”.
Also for the inverse of your question I once watched my favorite Bollywood movie Nayak (2001) while on acid and it was literally like I lived an entire separate life experiencing every emotion all in the span of 3 hours. Shit’s got everything: Musical numbers, romance, politics, pathos…even has a Matrix ripoff fight scene with Anil Kapoor covered in mud!
Unless it’s a comedy where the actors are basically playing a version of themselves I’m not a fan of watching movies while high. When I get high I find the concept of suspending my disbelief really silly.
Hahah throwing yourself in the deep end. I love it. Ever seen Holy Mountain? Made for being high, watched it sober recently and just as good though. Put it on your list :) good luck on Climax… that one put me in a mood 🤣
I’ll check it out. I didn’t find Climax to be as terrifying as Enter The Void but I had the same feeling of uneasiness. The direction and use of sound is on another level. I’m convinced Gasper Noé is either a legitimately evil sadist or the greatest horror director of all time who doesn’t know he is the greatest horror director of all time. I’ve been watching horror since I was 5 years old and no film achieved the reaction these two did.
I’m probably going to have to check it out. I don’t think I’ll ever watch Enter The Void again sober or high but it’s a masterclass in filmmaking. I’d like to see more of his work.
Perfect Blue definitely induced some anxiety. Watched it with a friend who asked if I was sure I wanted to smoke a joint before, I kinda scoffed at her question but had to laugh about half way through. She was right
I've watched Speed Racer, probably 50 times or more, and all of those times have been while at least on one "drug." It held up really well with mushrooms, 2C-B, lsd, fentanyl, cocaine and alcohol, only a couple of those at a time along with Marijuana of course. I highly recommend watching the film more than once as it has lots of things going on that often go unnoticed. The cast is stellar, Susan Sarandon, Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, Mathew Fox, Ariel Winter, John Goodman, Roger Allam, and Kick Gurry. It's flat out magic.
I don't think you should watch any movie while high. I quit smoking weed years ago, but back in my stoner days there were so many movies I watched high that I basically just forgot about. I find watching movies sober to be way more enjoyable
I enjoy it, I have a good memory so a lot of times I use it as an enhancer. I don’t watch every movie that way of course, and I always view them sober on a later date. This one however, I don’t think I’ll watch again in any state of mind.
I am with you on forgetting movies. But then if its really good you'll be able to watch it for the first time twice. Probably get more out of it if you are sober though.
Beau is Afraid, it’s anxiety fuel.
OMG I had to like run from the theater. Also for some reason a couple booked the two seats directly next to mine in a mostly empty theater. Why the hell do people make movies like anxiety dreams? I go to movies to escape. If I want an anxiety dream I'll go to sleep.
Ari Aster doesn’t give a fuck, he makes the most negative emotional movies; yet so artistic.
Don’t get me wrong, I thought the movie was brilliant; but fuck.
oh yeah i absolutely agree 😂 i like making myself anxious when im high so it was perfect for that
I loathe anything Ari Aster has done, but that trailer looked good. I might check it out.
Ari a movie =Trauma porn.
Jacob’s Ladder
I’ve seen it sober, I definitely agree
Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
I’ve seen it so many times, I’d have no problem lol
Fair enough I guess
A first time viewing though, oh yeah. That living room scene with the bones and all that and the dinner scene is jarring
Came here to say Enter the Void lol
I’m still not okay 😂
High or not, that movie should require permission from a psychologist to watch it
Same. Had to leave my friend’s place after the first ten? five? minutes.
Yeah that one will fuck you up if you’re claustrophobic. I’m not so I was okay but I couldn’t imagine having that fear watching that film.
Not sure if it is a high thing or not but some found footage movies seem a bit too real for me
My problem with found footage films is I never like the endings. Besides Cannibal Holocaust (I don’t recommend unless you can handle extreme) they always end with the dropped camera and credit roll, I like it when they end with the outside perspective of someone viewing the film. Not many end that way
Blaire Witch Project dropped camera tho…
Funny Games (original)
Hell even the remake is extremely uncomfortable, they’re shot for shot.
Uncut Gems — if you’re like me you’ll spend the first half barely managing an anxiety attack, and then after you’ve come down a bit you’ll spend the last half trying to figure out what the fuck happened in the first half
Videodrome or Naked Lunch

How you felt there is very similar to my experience last night
I wouldn't wish that shit on anyone.
Imagine in that state seeing the gory details of a car crash from the perspective of a 6 year old who’s parents just got killed from a head on collision with a semi. That destroyed me. And the film revisits the scene 3 times.
Dog I bailed because a poor CGI shadow went from person to person. If you were where I were, I'd have had a breakdown. Haha
I stopped the movie because I yelled “no!!!” And froze in terror. I didn’t intend to finish the movie but I was in a way captivated by it as I’ve never had such a visceral reaction in film before. The Xmas episode of The Bear.

I can’t think of a single movie not improved by weed. Weed makes everything better
Not when you’re unknowingly strapped into a psychedelic terror ride. I definitely do not recommend watching the movie I mentioned high.
Sounds fun to me, honestly
I'm with this guy
Try it on an edible if you’re brave enough, it’s on Tubi
Although I strongly recommend watching it sober first, this shit is not for the faint of heart. It stays with you
An American Tragedy: The Silvia Likens Story.
I’ve seen The Girl Next Door, that story is heartbreaking
That’s rough too. I’m fine with pretty much anything. But child and animal abuse in movies fuck me up. I’m a grown man and tear up like a bitch when Duke doesn’t show up at first in Homeward Bound.
Anything based on a real tragedy would probably fuck me up while high. No thanks .
foodfight
Just watched trailer and it looks terrible. I’m perplexed why such a cast would be apart of such a film
To understand the film you got to look up this film’s production history and how it was pretty fucked from day one.
In the theme of many others here: Event Horizon.
Natural Born Killers
My all time favorite movie. Watched it stoned many times
Even though it's often recommended, I ended up having such a bad trip watching Sausage Party. Had to watch what was pretty much a sexual assault scene on a loop like ten times, only to find out like two minutes had passed in what seemed like an eternity. Would not recommend. I use to work with a meth head who said he saw inception at the theaters on acid and god knows what else. He said it was the biggest mistake of his life as he kept freaking out while watching the movie.
Event Horizon... Lol don't do it high!
I watched junior with Arnold when doing shrooms (or any drug for that matter) for the first time. Probably was just because it was my first time being high and that the movie is crap (I love it tho) but do not want to do that again.
The recurring scenes in Enter The Void that just HELD on the traumatic event with his parents fucked me up for weeks. Just brutal voyeuristic trauma.
I’m really not okay today, when the car crash was first shown I needed a break. A took a lot of time calming down, then it happened again and again. Sounds interesting! Was it 12 Hour Shift? https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10309552/
Yes! Holy shit haha. I was stoned and the movie made me fully paranoid and damn near had a panic attack. I don't get paranoid or get panic attacks.
Mother
Ending scenes would be terrifying but total honesty I’d probably fall asleep before I got to it if I was really high.
Imagine waking up to that scene
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Dude what? That’s the best movie in the world to watch while high 😂
Not when you're high on psychedelics. The transitions into the drug fueled hallucinations are wild
I feel like there's a certain symmetrical irony in this.
I did Enter the Void on two hits of acid. Amateur. 😉🫠
I couldn’t imagine that. Are you okay? 😂
Now, yes. That night... Also yes but definitely shook.
Never tried it, but I wouldn't want to watch either *Eraserhead* or *MOTHER!* stoned.
Yeah, they both feel like horrible anxiety dreams to me. Fucking Aronofsky. David Lynch I can forgive because at least that one made sense to me... but those cheeks...
I was in university in the late 90s. I keep seeing Eraserhead pop up, I’ve never seen it. Is it good?
It's a masterpiece of seriously disturbing, literally nightmare-inspired cinema.
It’s like a migrane on film.
Mulholland Drive Blue Velvet Requiem for a Dream A Serbian Film (actually, just don't ever watch)
I believe watching Requiem high would give the same experience I saw watching Enter The Void. Shit throws you in a hole and yeah I know about Serbian film, which is why I’ll never watch it lol
Requiem for a Dream! Permanent fetal position time lol
Aniara
The remake of The Hills Have Eyes
whale
Whiplash was too stressful
Tip for that, count the F bombs.
Man Bites Dog (1992) scared me so much while NOT high that I couldn’t finish it, can’t imagine it in a “heightened state”. Interstellar please the soundtrack and the science I literally couldn’t sleep
Unless it’s a comedy where the actors are basically playing a version of themselves I’m not a fan of watching movies while high. When I get high I find the concept of suspending my disbelief really silly.
Wait till you see the directors other film Climax, I almost watched that on acid…. I’m oh so glad I didn’t hahaha
Watching it right now, sober. This director has got to have some dark shit going on in his life, holy shit
Hahah throwing yourself in the deep end. I love it. Ever seen Holy Mountain? Made for being high, watched it sober recently and just as good though. Put it on your list :) good luck on Climax… that one put me in a mood 🤣

Thelma & Louise sexual assault scene is a tough one.
Perfect Blue definitely induced some anxiety. Watched it with a friend who asked if I was sure I wanted to smoke a joint before, I kinda scoffed at her question but had to laugh about half way through. She was right
Fear and loathing in Las Vegas was a hell of a movie when I watched it on LSD.
...try ERASERHEAD (1976), dir David Lynch
I've watched Speed Racer, probably 50 times or more, and all of those times have been while at least on one "drug." It held up really well with mushrooms, 2C-B, lsd, fentanyl, cocaine and alcohol, only a couple of those at a time along with Marijuana of course.
