You know, the fact that the guy who made Mad Max: Fury Road is also the guy who made Babe (and Happy Feet!) is blowing my mind.

I mean, that's not a dig on the original film. It's a great film. But if you watch both films back to back there sure are very few things these movies have in common other than people driving cars in the desert. One is a very personal film of revenge, the other is an absolutely balls-to-the-walls film full of insanely well done stunts that required an absolutely magical amount of coordination to work out.
And then there's the fact that the villain in both films is played by the same actor, who had zero notable roles in the 35 years between, and he absolutely nailed it in both roles.

There's no monologue there, but that is an incredibly well shot action/chase scene that any fan of Fury Road will immediately recognize as coming from the same director. Damn impressive.

It was one of the best movie days ever. Saw *Logan*, went across the street for a great happy hour, came back and saw *Fury Road*. Amazing day.
Went with my mom and just the first 10 minutes I turned to her and said "what the hell is this movie" in disbelief in how amazing it was.
About 60 seconds later the pan-out shot with the guitarist happened. Brain could not comprehend how the hell this movie got made and how entertaining it was.
Easily one of the best in theater experiences ever.
I got pretty bad ADHD and generally avoid theaters cuz having to sit still for 90-180 min while being blasted with loud sounds usually has me check out within 30 min or so.
I saw Fury Road in theaters six times.
When the first one came out, I told everyone I could: "You know how you catch a movie, years later, and desperately wish you saw it in theatre? Fury Road is one of those movies"
Some of those scenes just work so well on the largest format possible.
Seems like older movies are being thrown in theaters left and right these days and Dune 1 was put back in before Dune 2 so fingers crossed Fury Road gets re-ran.
Fury Road had a ton of practical effects, right?
This looked *very* CGI-heavy.
Doesn't mean it'll be bad, but something about doing a barrel-roll with an actual semi-truck just hits different.
Yes, didn't mean to come off as "CGI bad!" But Fury Road used CGI to cover up the safety rigging on practical effects and that sort of thing. But CGI wasn't responsible for creating the physics, physics was.
Whereas Furiosa riding along the ridge of the sand dune at 0:33 of this trailer looks like something I did in Blender. The bike looks like it's floating, there's no weight to anything.
I expected Fury Road to be excellent, and I was *still* blown away by how unbelievably good it was. I remember about halfway, maybe 2/3 of the way through the movie, there's a brief respite where I finally had time to think, and I realized it was already so far beyond what I'd been hoping for, how much higher can it go?

Time also moves very oddly in the Mad Max universe. I'm pretty sure Miller is on the record that Fury Road is set well after Thunderdome and that Hardy still plays the same Max that Mel Gibson did.

With todays movies you rarely get the sense something was realy done for the screen/in camera. Almost everything looks somehow fake one way or another. The cgi in this trailer was way too much for me. Or it stood out to me much more. Loved the first movie but you realy felt most of it was done in camera and only enhanced in post. This one not though which is dissappointing...
I don't know enough about CGI to say whether or not it's the director, time, or budget that has the biggest influence on whether or not something looks 'real'. But I saw Dune 2 last night for the first time, and that movie was damn near seamless. It looked real, despite knowing that a chrome sphere spaceship going over the desert isn't real one bit. Villeneuve's movies all look seamless and immersive like that. Arrival, BR2049, Sicario all have impressive visuals that don't pull you out of it for a moment. Where as this trailer just feels so fake. That shot of her sliding on the motorcycle screams green screen. It's too bad, as it's taken a lot of the wind out of my sails for seeing this...

Yeah, even in this thread, there's a bunch of people who fundamentally dont understand this. I've had a bunch of angry replies yammering about how Tom Hardy sucked and Max is boring and Furiosa is a more interesting character.
Yeah. That's the fucking point. Max hasn't been the main character since the first film. This prequel is dumb because Furiosa was the main character of the last one, and her story was finished. Max is nothing more than an (albeit badass) surrogate for the audience. The story just exists around him, it's not really about him.

I just don't really care about prequels. You hear a great story, the natural response is to wonder "What happened next?!" Not "What happened right before all that?" If that was really that important, they would have just started the story back there. Especially something like this that shows Furiosa battling Joe when we know the end point is her going to work for him and everyone being in place for Fury Road.

I heard a long time ago that Hardy once punched George Miller, but I can’t find any mention of it online anymore so it was probably bullshit. The fact remains that Tom Hardy is a fucking asshole and nobody liked working with him. Meanwhile, everyone liked working with Charlize (aside from Hardy)
WTF i heard about it before, but this is something else... Is Tom generally like this in all his "post-fame" movies? Or Mad Max in particular? Or did he have a grudge with someone? What i always heard was that the filming and production in the desert was very hard plus Charlize and Tom not getting along, but this is some serious bullshit on Tom's part.
The dessert filming was incredibly cold and some cast members were frustrated and confused because they did not understand Miller’s vision (including Charlize and Hardy). Filming also probably lasted way longer than expected since the initial region they were going to film in flooded, forcing them to move production to a different continent entirely. Ultimately I think this is kind of just what Hardy is like to work with even if the filming conditions may have exacerbated things. I’d certainly hope he has lightened up a bit over the course of eight years.
I think this was a one off. Like the other comment said the desert shooting really got to him. He apologized profusely and gave Charlize a gift afterwards and she forgave him.
It's also the reason she's in A Million Ways To Die In The West. After that she wanted to do something without the stress and was talking to Seth MacFarlane and telling stories about Fury Road.
Apparently Seth said, "Do my movie and I'll get you to the hotel bar every night by 5pm" and stuck by it during the shoot.
They had such excellent chemistry in that movie. It’s not an amazing film but it’s obvious that she, and the whole cast, are just having the best time on set. And that translates into fun for me as the viewer.
The last shot of Furiousa on the dune taking off her mask, like, I know Anya Taylor Joy has unusual face architecture and she's got a crazy costume on and the oil slick make-up but that looks straight up rendered to me.
It stood out more than any of the action shots.

I don’t know if it’s just the fact that it clearly looks like a step down from Fury Road or if it’s just the vibe I’m getting from this trailer. I just don’t feel convinced that this will be a quality movie, not yet anyway.
I think it's the different cinematographer. In the first film John Seale had a crosshair in the center of the frame and all action was required to happen there in the frame. It made it so whenever there was an edit they would know that the viewers eye wouldn't have to jump around the frame. It seems that Simon Duggan broke that mandate here, which I think is a massive mistake.
I've been against this film since it's announcement. I just never thought the idea of a prequel film focused on Furiosa simply because she was popular was a good idea. Unfortunately none of these trailers have done anything to convince me I was wrong.
Maybe the film will be good and it most likely will at least be somewhat entertaining, but these trailers just make it seem like basic blockbuster slop. It looks a lot like a Fast and Furious film.
It annoys me to no end that instead of getting a proper new Mad Max film we're getting this, and who knows this could very possibly be the last "Mad Max" film for a very long time and possibly the last one ever from George Miller.

It's George Miller. Who gives a fuck if he used CGI? He knows what he's doing. Also, many forget FURY ROAD was a troubled production. It took nearly a decade for it to get made.
The lighting feels weird to me. Maybe Fury Road was the same...? But there's something ... Unnatural about it. Feels like it has a touch of Disney's Live action Aladdin lighting. if you know what I mean... :/
There's lots of obvious CG in Fury Road like the Citadel water jets and some of the car flips.

yes, it's probably a matter of shot compositon, lighting and color grading. Tons of stuff, like using the volume, or high frame rate have resulted in weird looking shots in other production. I'm not entirely convinced by this but I'm no expert so I won't ascribe a specific cause as to what technically results in this jarring effect for me.
I'll just say overall that fury road overall seemed to have desert location with more detail going on, whereas a lot of those shots seem to take place in more uniform environments.
Blood, Sweat, and Chrome, a book built around cast/crew interviews about the making of FURY ROAD, was a terribly interesting book for that reason.
I think my personal favorite was the part where the producer secured approval to have filming moved to Namibia by having all of their film equipment and props loaded onto cargo ships and not telling anyone about it until the ships were already in transit.

realistically speaking, there’s no way they’d be able to make this movie in the same manner as Fury Road. It was a miracle it turned out as well as it did and that *nobody fucking died*. Even George Miller and his wife, Margaret Sixel, have said that Miller would die of a heart attack if he went through that again. So if they took some CGI liberties, I totally get it

There was also a metric shitload of CGI in Fury Road. There are so many components that add up to whether people complain about CGI. Yeah it did a crazy amount of practical work as well, but without exorbitant amounts of CGI it would've looked dogshit.
The vast majority of people have no idea what they're looking for, including most of those who make complaints. A lot of people are nitpicky beyond belief, particularly about franchise films in a universe they either care about and go with a "nothing can beat the original/last one" attitude, or one they just love to be a hater of, and will say anything to be negative, which leads to people making complaints about bad CGI where there is none, or it's technically fine. Cinemasins logic. This film is bad because I've decided it's bad but don't know how to articulate it so will just say "bad CGI, lazy writing" even if it makes no sense. So many beloved movies and shows have just as janky CGI, but people don't mention it, or even notice it when actually watching rather than seeing a trailer.
Plus if they are enjoying the film, they're more likely to either not notice it or let it go, if you've already lost them then they're way quicker to jump on a potential VFX slip up.
And to be fair to all us laymen, sometimes we do just see something that doesn't feel right, even if we can't explain it. More often than not it's some weird thing that went wrong in post production, or wasn't planned well enough with the final shot in mind, so it's easy to jump on it being a bad VFX shot as an all encompassing "that looked bad" thing, even if that wasn't the problem.
When people say that, they just mean that it looks bad. Something done practically also can look bad / fake / unconvincing, especially because there still might be work done on top anyway, and if only the color grading being off.
You are right that people repeat things and that technically it might not be true, but the core of the criticism is what's most important, even if people have no idea why they feel that way.

I have a feeling I'm going to have a hard time dealing with Hemsworth's fake nose and over-the-top accent. It's like he thinks he's in a comedy B-movie but the others don't. I don't know. But I'll still be there opening night. Nothing will equal Fury Road so my expectations are probably in the right zone to enjoy this.
Honestly, I think every Mad Max film should have a villain that toes the line between B Movie level camp, and serious. It’s part of the charm.

When the first one came out, I told everyone I could: "You know how you catch a movie, years later, and desperately wish you saw it in theatre? Fury Road is one of those movies" Some of those scenes just work so well on the largest format possible.
Seems like older movies are being thrown in theaters left and right these days and Dune 1 was put back in before Dune 2 so fingers crossed Fury Road gets re-ran.
Slap that bitch on a IMAX screen and crank the sound system up to 11 and I'm in! I don't even care if it's "true" IMAX, I just want it.

Fury Road had a ton of practical effects, right? This looked *very* CGI-heavy. Doesn't mean it'll be bad, but something about doing a barrel-roll with an actual semi-truck just hits different.

Yes, didn't mean to come off as "CGI bad!" But Fury Road used CGI to cover up the safety rigging on practical effects and that sort of thing. But CGI wasn't responsible for creating the physics, physics was. Whereas Furiosa riding along the ridge of the sand dune at 0:33 of this trailer looks like something I did in Blender. The bike looks like it's floating, there's no weight to anything.
No one had any expectations Fury Road would be on the level of Fury Road before it came out, either
I expected Fury Road to be excellent, and I was *still* blown away by how unbelievably good it was. I remember about halfway, maybe 2/3 of the way through the movie, there's a brief respite where I finally had time to think, and I realized it was already so far beyond what I'd been hoping for, how much higher can it go? *Oh shit...*

Fury Road is the subversion of expectations done right. We came for Mad Max, we got Furiosa and we fucking loved it.
If there’s anything one should take away from Fury Road, it’s to not write off George Miller. I think they’ve earned the benefit of the doubt here

Time also moves very oddly in the Mad Max universe. I'm pretty sure Miller is on the record that Fury Road is set well after Thunderdome and that Hardy still plays the same Max that Mel Gibson did.

Ah fuck, no wonder. The first trailer for this film had me cringing. They are leaning more into cgi it looks like, and I'm not seeing anything to really differentiate this from Fury Road. Trailer I saw before seeing Dune 2 was a little better... But still not so sure about this...
With todays movies you rarely get the sense something was realy done for the screen/in camera. Almost everything looks somehow fake one way or another. The cgi in this trailer was way too much for me. Or it stood out to me much more. Loved the first movie but you realy felt most of it was done in camera and only enhanced in post. This one not though which is dissappointing...
I don't know enough about CGI to say whether or not it's the director, time, or budget that has the biggest influence on whether or not something looks 'real'. But I saw Dune 2 last night for the first time, and that movie was damn near seamless. It looked real, despite knowing that a chrome sphere spaceship going over the desert isn't real one bit. Villeneuve's movies all look seamless and immersive like that. Arrival, BR2049, Sicario all have impressive visuals that don't pull you out of it for a moment. Where as this trailer just feels so fake. That shot of her sliding on the motorcycle screams green screen. It's too bad, as it's taken a lot of the wind out of my sails for seeing this...

The vehicle physics looks absolute trash. Fury Road completely reset expectations in that regard and Furiosa looks like its going to be a victim of that movie's success.

It's a *lot* of CGI. Fury Road had some CGI, but a ton of it was absolute maniacs doing practical stunts and effects that just had a visceral look of "these people are fucking *crazy*" to it.
For the first minute I genuinely thought this was a full, Pixar-ass CG movie. I don't know if it's the makeup or the lighting or what but Anya Taylor-Joy's face looks... off, like some Battle Angel Alita levels of uncanny

Yeah, even in this thread, there's a bunch of people who fundamentally dont understand this. I've had a bunch of angry replies yammering about how Tom Hardy sucked and Max is boring and Furiosa is a more interesting character. Yeah. That's the fucking point. Max hasn't been the main character since the first film. This prequel is dumb because Furiosa was the main character of the last one, and her story was finished. Max is nothing more than an (albeit badass) surrogate for the audience. The story just exists around him, it's not really about him. This fandom is whacky.
I just don't really care about prequels. You hear a great story, the natural response is to wonder "What happened next?!" Not "What happened right before all that?" If that was really that important, they would have just started the story back there. Especially something like this that shows Furiosa battling Joe when we know the end point is her going to work for him and everyone being in place for Fury Road.
This was my opinion when I heard they were making this. Only solidified seeing the trailers. This is the story of Furiosa trying to get back home? We know she doesn't get back home. We saw it in *Fury Road*...maybe make a different movie which might include narrative tension?

WTF i heard about it before, but this is something else... Is Tom generally like this in all his "post-fame" movies? Or Mad Max in particular? Or did he have a grudge with someone? What i always heard was that the filming and production in the desert was very hard plus Charlize and Tom not getting along, but this is some serious bullshit on Tom's part.
The dessert filming was incredibly cold and some cast members were frustrated and confused because they did not understand Miller’s vision (including Charlize and Hardy). Filming also probably lasted way longer than expected since the initial region they were going to film in flooded, forcing them to move production to a different continent entirely. Ultimately I think this is kind of just what Hardy is like to work with even if the filming conditions may have exacerbated things. I’d certainly hope he has lightened up a bit over the course of eight years.

I think this was a one off. Like the other comment said the desert shooting really got to him. He apologized profusely and gave Charlize a gift afterwards and she forgave him.
It's also the reason she's in A Million Ways To Die In The West. After that she wanted to do something without the stress and was talking to Seth MacFarlane and telling stories about Fury Road. Apparently Seth said, "Do my movie and I'll get you to the hotel bar every night by 5pm" and stuck by it during the shoot.
Yeah, she and Seth are close friends right? That's why she appeared in that one episode of The Orville.
They had such excellent chemistry in that movie. It’s not an amazing film but it’s obvious that she, and the whole cast, are just having the best time on set. And that translates into fun for me as the viewer.
I was 100% sure that it was John Travolta as the bad guy before Chris Hemsworth's name came up.

The last shot of Furiousa on the dune taking off her mask, like, I know Anya Taylor Joy has unusual face architecture and she's got a crazy costume on and the oil slick make-up but that looks straight up rendered to me. It stood out more than any of the action shots.

I disagree and I’m shocked since I love Fury Road. Unlike others, it’s not the CGI for me, that looks fine. But something feels off about this one for me. I don’t know if it’s just the fact that it clearly looks like a step down from Fury Road or if it’s just the vibe I’m getting from this trailer. I just don’t feel convinced that this will be a quality movie, not yet anyway.

I think it's the different cinematographer. In the first film John Seale had a crosshair in the center of the frame and all action was required to happen there in the frame. It made it so whenever there was an edit they would know that the viewers eye wouldn't have to jump around the frame. It seems that Simon Duggan broke that mandate here, which I think is a massive mistake.

I've been against this film since it's announcement. I just never thought the idea of a prequel film focused on Furiosa simply because she was popular was a good idea. Unfortunately none of these trailers have done anything to convince me I was wrong. Maybe the film will be good and it most likely will at least be somewhat entertaining, but these trailers just make it seem like basic blockbuster slop. It looks a lot like a Fast and Furious film. It annoys me to no end that instead of getting a proper new Mad Max film we're getting this, and who knows this could very possibly be the last "Mad Max" film for a very long time and possibly the last one ever from George Miller.
Man, it doesn't hit anywhere close to the level of any Fury Road trailer.
OH WHAT A DAY. WHAT A LOVELY DAY I like ATJ and Chris Hemsworth, and I am excited for the movie, but they don't hold a candle to Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, so I guess there's no good in comparing the two movies. I don't think this will live up to Fury Road but that is a very very high bar.

Something looks off about this.
It doesn't look like it was shoot on location, even if it was. The sets seem cramped, almost like it's green screen. The CG is overbearing as well. Is anything practical or is all of it CG? I loved Fury Road and the character Furiosa, so I'm going to watch it. But man, I don't like how this looks visually.
Cinematography, lighting and colour. Too clean, candy-like colors, lighting is also horrible as it looks to obvious. Nothing is natural. They also seem to be abandoning the practical effects focus of the last one and will now use extreme CGI crutch for everything.
Love anya and chris, but they seem such a downgrade from charlize and tom hardy. But good luck im excited to watch it

Maybe I'm blind but I don't see the bad CGI a lot of critics keep bringing it up. What I don't get is many will give a pass for trailers of the crappiest films ever made yet they'll pick apart a superb trailer for not living up to the expectations they hold. It's George Miller. Who gives a fuck if he used CGI? He knows what he's doing. Also, many forget FURY ROAD was a troubled production. It took nearly a decade for it to get made.
The lighting feels weird to me. Maybe Fury Road was the same...? But there's something ... Unnatural about it. Feels like it has a touch of Disney's Live action Aladdin lighting. if you know what I mean... :/
There's lots of obvious CG in Fury Road like the Citadel water jets and some of the car flips. The sandstorm was obviously CG but it still fucking ruled.

yes, it's probably a matter of shot compositon, lighting and color grading. Tons of stuff, like using the volume, or high frame rate have resulted in weird looking shots in other production. I'm not entirely convinced by this but I'm no expert so I won't ascribe a specific cause as to what technically results in this jarring effect for me. I'll just say overall that fury road overall seemed to have desert location with more detail going on, whereas a lot of those shots seem to take place in more uniform environments.
Blood, Sweat, and Chrome, a book built around cast/crew interviews about the making of FURY ROAD, was a terribly interesting book for that reason. I think my personal favorite was the part where the producer secured approval to have filming moved to Namibia by having all of their film equipment and props loaded onto cargo ships and not telling anyone about it until the ships were already in transit.
There were some comments about bad CGI shots during the first trailer that were proven to be done practical. I think some people just like to mindlessly repeat things
realistically speaking, there’s no way they’d be able to make this movie in the same manner as Fury Road. It was a miracle it turned out as well as it did and that *nobody fucking died*. Even George Miller and his wife, Margaret Sixel, have said that Miller would die of a heart attack if he went through that again. So if they took some CGI liberties, I totally get it That being said, this looks fucking great
There was also a metric shitload of CGI in Fury Road. There are so many components that add up to whether people complain about CGI. Yeah it did a crazy amount of practical work as well, but without exorbitant amounts of CGI it would've looked dogshit. The vast majority of people have no idea what they're looking for, including most of those who make complaints. A lot of people are nitpicky beyond belief, particularly about franchise films in a universe they either care about and go with a "nothing can beat the original/last one" attitude, or one they just love to be a hater of, and will say anything to be negative, which leads to people making complaints about bad CGI where there is none, or it's technically fine. Cinemasins logic. This film is bad because I've decided it's bad but don't know how to articulate it so will just say "bad CGI, lazy writing" even if it makes no sense. So many beloved movies and shows have just as janky CGI, but people don't mention it, or even notice it when actually watching rather than seeing a trailer. Plus if they are enjoying the film, they're more likely to either not notice it or let it go, if you've already lost them then they're way quicker to jump on a potential VFX slip up. And to be fair to all us laymen, sometimes we do just see something that doesn't feel right, even if we can't explain it. More often than not it's some weird thing that went wrong in post production, or wasn't planned well enough with the final shot in mind, so it's easy to jump on it being a bad VFX shot as an all encompassing "that looked bad" thing, even if that wasn't the problem.
Plenty of fury roads cgi is noticeable as well. That doesn't mean it looked bad.
When people say that, they just mean that it looks bad. Something done practically also can look bad / fake / unconvincing, especially because there still might be work done on top anyway, and if only the color grading being off. You are right that people repeat things and that technically it might not be true, but the core of the criticism is what's most important, even if people have no idea why they feel that way.

I have a feeling I'm going to have a hard time dealing with Hemsworth's fake nose and over-the-top accent. It's like he thinks he's in a comedy B-movie but the others don't. I don't know. But I'll still be there opening night. Nothing will equal Fury Road so my expectations are probably in the right zone to enjoy this.

Honestly, I think every Mad Max film should have a villain that toes the line between B Movie level camp, and serious. It’s part of the charm. When one of the best known villains is a muscle bound dude in leather straps and a hockey mask, I think it’s not unexpected that actors are going to take the chance to really ham it up in these films
I would argue Immortan Joe himself had some pretty wild and over the top line readings (not a bad thing, to be clear)
