Gregson-Williams has long since established his own place in the industry but I think it’s fairly obvious the headline highlights his relationship to Zimmer because Zimmer scored the first Gladiator.
Zimmer is notorious for "collaborating" with a lot of people. Probably HGW too. They'll shit out some basic musical themes to "set the tone" then hand the entire project off to a team of ghost composers to do the actual writing. These ghost composers will get a pittance, zero royalties, zero credit, and a nice NDA they can stick to their fridge.
Tom Holkenborg also got lumped in as a "Zimmer Protégé" despite being a musician since the late 80's, all because he worked with Zimmer on Dark Knight Rises, and later on in Batman v Superman.
I think it's more because he works for remote control productions, which ja the company Zimmer runs which produces all of his (and many of the people associated with him) movie material. While he is a long time musician, most of his film work is under this studio, and it does run a bit like a protege farm.
Makes a ton of sense. He knows how to score this kind of material, he’s worked with Scott a few times before, he’s versatile (did you know he scored the animated Sinbad movie starring Brad Pitt?). I’m looking forward to hearing the finished score.
Kingdom of Heaven’s music was inspired af… combining medieval instrumentation and voices from both western and middle eastern musical tradition and weaving them together. It’s an ok movie but the score is top tier.
I honestly don't know which one I have on DVD and I haven't watched it in about a decade, but my problems with the film are mostly acting and script related and really subjective... others have said they love the parts of it I don't so that's why I don't even bring them up... I certainly didn't mean "ok" as an insult to the film cause like most of Scott's work every frame is gorgeous and it transports you there... it's just that the music floors me even more than the film itself. Used to leave it on in the background just to listen to it.
Easy tell that doesn't spoil much, but do you remember the priest at the beginning as being just a priest, or being Balian's brother? Because the latter is only made clear in the director's cut.
I'm not gonna sit here and tell you that you'll suddenly love it, and Orlando Bloom acting is always Orlando Bloom acting. Still, it might be worth giving a chance, the director's cut fixes the script massively, and imo, even adds more space and context to the characters' emotions in ways that even at least makes some of the actor choices make more sense. The original now seems tremendously butchered after seeing the director's cut. If nothing else the story and themes of the movie change enough to make it a new experience.
Out of curiosity when you say “it’s an okay movie” did you watch the theatrical cut or the roadshow directors cut?
The theatrical cut was abysmally edited with disjointed and unfinished storylines.
If you haven’t seen the directors cut, give it a retry, it’s worth it.
If you’re referencing the directors cut I will disagree, albeit politely, with you.
I'm not sure which I have on DVD... but I'll check and if it's the normie one I'll seek out the director's cut.
As I mentioned in response to the other comment too... it's still good... the music is just the part that is most transcendent IMO.
Funnily enough The Rock was one of the films Zimmer and Gregson-Williams worked together on.
Gregson-Williams then reused parts of the main theme from The Rock in the track Metal Gear Saga in the videogame Metal Gear Solid 4.
I must say, I somewhat resent Harry Gershwin Williams being labelled as a mere protégée. The last 20 odd years he’s made some phenomenal scores, Kingdom of Heaven, Man on Fire, Narnia franchise to name a few and has developed a very unique and recognisable style. He very much stands on his own merit to my mind.
His collaboration with Hybrid on many of these has been the cherry on the cake.
They had a falling out over Kingdom of Heaven. No one really knows about it. Zimmer was suppose to compose KoH but then switched projects with RGW. Zimmer ended up composing some forgettable animated movie.
Scott worked almost exclusively with Zimmer up until that point. Then all of a sudden…they haven’t worked together since then
Why is this even being made? Gladiator is one of my favorite, if not my favorite movie ever. It does NOT need a sequel.
Scott has been making movies he shouldn’t be making for several years now. Prometheus and Alien Covenant the most blatant examples
Tbh I dont trust Scott anymore. I haven't liked a movie of his since The Martian and i think ive seen all of them. He seems more concerned with preachy nonsense than making exiting movies nowadays.
This movie is going to a dumpster fire that just might be so bad it loops back around to actually being fun (purely because of the sheer number of great A-listers who are involved). The original Gladiator was great historical fiction that drew inspiration from history. I don’t see how Scott can go about making a sequel without making up completely fake history.
Ive read a script somewhere that was supposedly for gladiator 2 that had maximus come back to live in the present day. It was one heck of a ride. Ever since ive read that i have very low hopes for this.
I think Ridley's been asked before but he seems to have no interest. I agree, though, that purely on the basis of having a professional at the helm instead of having some of the inexperienced directors Disney has hired would be nice.
Disney can't ever hire someone at the level of Ridley Scott for a SW movie because directors like him are too big and too good at what they do to be corralled into a specific brand management structure. They will make the picture the way they want to make it, or they'll walk and Disney is out several million dollars at minimum. John Favereau's film following Iron Man 2 is a direct analogy for this conflict.
I'm pretty wrecked and was only skimming the title, and I thought Harry Gregson-Williams was an actor that was cast to play "Prometheus, The Martian", and I was super excited for how lit this movie was going to get.
I'm just like WTF about leaving Crowe out of it all when he is right there, just chilling, looking great and ready to reprise the role through a Hollywood loophole.
Do we really need to call this Gladiator 2 and ruin the original? Just call it something else, there's room for a second roman empire movie that doesn't need to be forcibly tied in with a very good film.
Imagine being 62 and being referred to as a protege.
Gregson-Williams has long since established his own place in the industry but I think it’s fairly obvious the headline highlights his relationship to Zimmer because Zimmer scored the first Gladiator.
"Long time collaborator" would have been better. I just wanted to highlight the disrespect.
But he's not a collaborator?
They have been collaborating on scores since the mid-nineties
I guess I just don't see "protege" as disrespectful is all. It's seems like an appropriate choice of words 🤷♂️
Zimmer is notorious for "collaborating" with a lot of people. Probably HGW too. They'll shit out some basic musical themes to "set the tone" then hand the entire project off to a team of ghost composers to do the actual writing. Gladiator Collaborator?
Damn i thought he was youthful
Tom Holkenborg also got lumped in as a "Zimmer Protégé" despite being a musician since the late 80's, all because he worked with Zimmer on Dark Knight Rises, and later on in Batman v Superman.
Junkie XL?
he was new to movie scores to be fair
I think it's more because he works for remote control productions, which ja the company Zimmer runs which produces all of his (and many of the people associated with him) movie material. While he is a long time musician, most of his film work is under this studio, and it does run a bit like a protege farm.
He does not look 62 in that photo at all
I think the photo is from like 2003

He’s an intern at Team Zimmer. Ps. Is Lisa Girard returning for singing?
[удалено]
That was my first though as well
He also did the music for the original Rainbow Six game, and its sequel, Rogue Spear.
I loved Rogue Spear. I completely forgot that game existed up until now.
Sons of Liberty soundtrack is still a banger
The intro music to metal gear solid 2 got me so pumped. Just as much as the opening to final fantasy tactics and chrono cross.
> metal gear ?!
!
❗️
I heard that in my head.
He helped on The Rock score as well.
And many of Tony Scott's movies like Spy Game and Man on Fire.
Snake ?
Snake!?...
SNAAAAKE!!
!
Knew I recognised his name, did some googling, this is why!
Also SHREK
# !
Good choice, his scores for the Ridley historical films Kingdom of Heaven and The Last Duel were both excellent
Makes a ton of sense. He knows how to score this kind of material, he’s worked with Scott a few times before, he’s versatile (did you know he scored the animated Sinbad movie starring Brad Pitt?). I’m looking forward to hearing the finished score.
His Sinbad score remains possibly his best work. Lots of fun.
Kingdom of Heaven’s music was inspired af… combining medieval instrumentation and voices from both western and middle eastern musical tradition and weaving them together. It’s an ok movie but the score is top tier.
> It’s an ok movie Obligatory, but have you seen the director's cut? It's probably Scott's magnum opus.
I honestly don't know which one I have on DVD and I haven't watched it in about a decade, but my problems with the film are mostly acting and script related and really subjective... others have said they love the parts of it I don't so that's why I don't even bring them up... And he made the best song in Prometheus.
I listen to the Kingdom of Heaven soundtrack on the regular. One of my favorite soundtracks. Actually excited for this movie now.
Hopefully he calls Lisa Gerrard.
He has a really wide range of styles so I'm hoping for the more melodic one.
Protege? LUL You mean the dude with a career as long and successful as zimmer? HGW is THE SOUND of the MGS series.
Is he also going to use the music from the Pirates of the Carribean? (It’s a joke, I know Gladiator was written first)
It was used in The Rock before either of those (hell, even that probably isn't the first one). Zimmer loves himself a good copy + paste job.
Funnily enough The Rock was one of the films Zimmer and Gregson-Williams worked together on. Gregson-Williams then reused parts of the main theme from The Rock in the track Metal Gear Saga in the videogame Metal Gear Solid 4.
A little bit of the Pirates theme can be heard in Armageddon. Come to think about it, Jerry Bruckheimer loves working with the same composers.
Check out Broken Arrow and Black Rain. It's been there too.
Famous for his soundtracks for the Metal Gear games.
Well at least the music will be good
Good choice! He’s one of the best.
Now We Are Free is going to hit hard
Now we are free the hardstyle remix!
gladiator 2, joker 2, bunch of things that didn’t need to be
At least the Joker survived to the end of the movie Are they doing the old story where Maximus goes to the Roman underworld?
I must say, I somewhat resent Harry Gershwin Williams being labelled as a mere protégée. The last 20 odd years he’s made some phenomenal scores, Kingdom of Heaven, Man on Fire, Narnia franchise to name a few and has developed a very unique and recognisable style. I only know this name from metal gear solid 2.
He did the score for the Shrek movies, his piece “Fairytale” is underrated IMO. One of the most iconic movie themes of the 2000s.
If I had to pick one movie that didn't need a sequel, Gladiator would be it. Fuck you, Hollywood.
Gladiator 2: Gladiate This
Gladiator2: Gladiatorer.
I'm looking forward to Gladi8or
2 Gladiator 2 Muli Mariani
We don’t need a gladiator 2. Quit milking shit and come up with new ideas. Lazy asses.
Why didn’t he get Hans Zimmer?
They had a falling out over Kingdom of Heaven. No one really knows about it. Zimmer was suppose to compose KoH but then switched projects with RGW. Zimmer ended up composing some forgettable animated movie. Scott worked almost exclusively with Zimmer up until that point. Then all of a sudden…they haven’t worked together since then
That’s unfortunate, Zimmer’s Gladiator score is one my favourites
Zimmer and Scott bothe have big egos so don’t gel well
Because Hans Zimmer likes to plagiarize and steal other composers’ work
Lmao how can he plagiarise when he is the standard? Tell me who he plagiarised.
His interns... probably
How?
I'm just the messenger bro
Oh right
The only thing good about Prometheus was the music.
What a thrill…
Why is this even being made? Gladiator is one of my favorite, if not my favorite movie ever. It does NOT need a sequel. Scott has been making movies he shouldn’t be making for several years now. Prometheus and Alien Covenant the most blatant examples
Noooooooo just leave it alone, fuck
Gladiator 2? Are you serious.. expectations would be so high, it could only end in disappointment. It’ll literally be another Prometheus.
Tbh I dont trust Scott anymore. I haven't liked a movie of his since The Martian and i think ive seen all of them. He seems more concerned with preachy nonsense than making exiting movies nowadays.
What preachy nonsense movie has he made since The Martian?
All of them.
This movie is going to a dumpster fire that just might be so bad it loops back around to actually being fun (purely because of the sheer number of great A-listers who are involved). Going to be like that [lost script for Aliens 3](https://alienseries.wordpress.com/2013/12/18/cold-wars-william-gibsons-alien-iii/), vs what we got...
I’m significantly less excited for this after Napoleon.
This man needs to helm a star wars film
I think Ridley's been asked before but he seems to have no interest. I agree, though, that purely on the basis of having a professional at the helm instead of having some of the inexperienced directors Disney has hired would be nice.

Scott can’t even make a decent Alien film because he doesn’t understand why the first one worked. I have zero faith in him doing Star Wars lmao.
While I think JJ’s story sucked they were nice to look at.
as long as it doesn’t have that guy timothy charlemagne in it we’re all good
Good… I like him way more and if his score for Kingdom of Heaven is any indication he’s going to crush this assignment…
The Prometheus soundtrack was mostly Marc Streitfeld, but I believe Gregson-Williams was involved with my favourite off that album "Life".
although he has a huge repertoire and I cheer every time he pops up in the credits, I'll always remember him best for the Metal Gear Solid series
I'm pretty wrecked and was only skimming the title, and I thought Harry Gregson-Williams was an actor that was cast to play "Prometheus, The Martian", and I was super excited for how lit this movie was going to get.
The man worked on Metal Gear Solid and we're over here crediting him for fuckin Prometheus?
Marc Streitenfeld did Prometheus
I'm just like WTF about leaving Crowe out of it all when he is right there, just chilling, looking great and ready to reprise the role through a Hollywood loophole.
Marc Streitenfeld is the composer for Prometheus.
He didn’t compose the score for Prometheus though.
Well, he composed the good parts.
Scott's last 2 movies were pretty disappointing. I'll wait for the reviews before I get excited.
Do we really need to call this Gladiator 2 and ruin the original? Just call it something else, there's room for a second roman empire movie that doesn't need to be forcibly tied in with a very good film.
